Kraft paper or kraft[1] is paper or paperboard (cardboard) made from kraft pulp.

Sack kraft paper (or just sack paper) is a porous, high resilience, high tear strength kraft paper designed for packaging products with high strength and durability requirements.[2]

Pulp made by the Kraft process is stronger than that made by other pulping processes; Acid sulfite processes degrade cellulose more, resulting in weaker fibers, and mechanical pulping processes leave most of the lignin in the fibers, while force pulping removes most of the lignin originally present in the wood. Low lignin content is important for the resulting strength of the paper because the hydrophobic nature of lignin interferes with the formation of cellulosic (and hemicellulose) hydrogen bonds in the fibers.[3]

Kraft pulp is darker than other wood pulps but can be bleached to produce very white pulp. Fully bleached kraft pulp is used to produce high quality paper where strength, whiteness and resistance to yellowing are important.

Sack paper pulp is made from softwood using the kraft process. The long fibers give the paper its strength, and wet strength chemicals are added to improve strength even further. Both white and brown qualities are produced. Sack paper is then made from the wood pulp on a paper machine. The paper is micro-creped to give porosity and elasticity. Microcreping is done by drying with loose draws, which allows it to shrink. This allows the paper to elongate 4% in the machine direction and 10% in the cross direction without breaking.[2] The machine direction stretch can be further enhanced by pressing between very elastic cylinders, resulting in more microcrepes.[2] The paper can be coated with polyethylene (PE) to provide an effective barrier against moisture, grease and bacteria, although recyclability will be hampered. Zein coatings are also water resistant but allow for better recyclability.[4]

Depending on the desired strength, a paper sack can consist of several layers of sack paper.

Kraft paper is manufactured on paper machines with moderate machine speeds. The raw material is usually softwood pulp from the kraft process.

Maintaining a high effective sulfur ratio or high sulfidity is important for the highest possible strength using the kraft process.

The Kraft process can use a wider range of fiber sources than most other pulping processes. All wood species, including highly resinous species such as southern pine,[5] and non-wood species such as bamboo and kenaf, can be used in the kraft process.

Normal kraft paper is strong and relatively coarse. It has high tensile strength. The basis weight is usually 40-135 g/m 2 .

The body of the cartridge is wrapped from a kraft paper of 80-120 g/m 2 , which is further covered by an outer sheet of 60-80 g/m 2 with paint and print.

This process converts wood into pulp by treating wood chips with a special compound to break down bonds originally present in the wood. The plates are then cut to specific dimensions specified by the factory and printed using a specific process (most likely offset lithography). Finally, the parts are glued together and the selected handle is attached… but more on that in a moment ;).

The term was named after the German word Kraft, meaning “strength,” which should give a good indication of the paper bag’s durability and sturdiness. The pulp made by this process is much stronger than the pulp made by other pulping processes, which is why it is the most commonly used method of papermaking today.

Confirm bag options and design and develop a sample product with our team (about 2 weeks). You will work with our specialists and our in-house designer to confirm details of your order such as quantity, size, color and print options. When you design your bag you can see a 2D or 3D mockup of your product before production and if you are interested we can provide you with a physical sample. Start mass production (3 weeks) once you give our team the green light. We communicate the design and other specifications with the factory to ensure your product is exactly what you need. On Site Quality Control Throughout the production process, our team will be on site to ensure each unit is manufactured to the highest quality possible. We take extreme measures to ensure your paper bag exceeds your expectations. Delivery of packaging product for distribution (5-7 weeks) We’ll arrange for your packaging to be shipped to your door, so you don’t have to worry about a thing! Once your product is ready to ship, we will notify you and keep you updated until the products are safely in your possession.

Prepare paper pulp

In most cases, paper bags are made from recycled paper that is collected and processed at a recycled paper mill. In rare cases, the paper is made from fresh paper pulp, which is essentially thin wood chips from trees. This pulp is subjected to various mechanical and chemical processes to achieve a specific color and paper weight. The paper needs to be debarked, deinked and cleaned many times to achieve a high quality and professional look.

Pressing the pulp into paper

The processed pulp is fed into the paper machine. This machine is somewhat similar to a traditional printer, but instead of printing ink, it rolls out blank sheets of paper made by compressing the pulp into thin and long discs. Different drum sizes and different amounts of chemicals and pulp produce different types of paper sheets. The panels are rolled up and cut into manageable sizes before being prepared for final assembly or trimming.

The sack machine automatically pulls paper rolls and cuts them to the right size. The cut sheets of paper are folded and glued together by the machine. At the end, a stack of grocery bags is tied together with either string or a plastic seal. The batches are then shipped to their final destination at your local grocery store.

Paper bags are commonly used as shopping carrier bags and for packaging some consumer goods. They carry a wide range of products from groceries, glass bottles, clothing, books, toiletries, electronics and various other goods and can also act as a means of transportation in everyday life.

In 1852, schoolteacher Francis Wolle invented the first machine for mass-producing paper bags.[1] Wolle and his brother patented the machine and founded the Union Paper Bag Company.

In 1853, James Baldwin, a papermaker from Birmingham and Kings Norton in England, received a patent for an apparatus for making square-bottomed paper bags. He then used the image of a flat-bottomed bag as his company logo.[2]

In 1871, inventor Margaret E. Knight designed a machine that could make flat-bottomed paper bags that could carry more than the previous envelope-style design.

In 1883, Charles Stilwell patented a machine that made paper bags with a square bottom and pleated sides, making them easier to fold and store.[3][4] This type of bag was called the S.O.S. or “Self-Opening Sack”.[5]

In 1912, Walter Deubener, a grocer in Saint Paul, Minnesota, used cords to reinforce paper bags and add handles. These “Deubener shopping bags” could carry up to 75 pounds at a time and became very popular, selling over a million bags a year by 1915. Paper bags with handles later became the standard for department stores, and were often printed with the stores’ logo or brand colors.

Plastic bags were introduced in the 1970s and eventually replaced paper bags as the bag of choice for grocery stores, thanks to their lower cost.[6] However, with the trend to phase out lightweight plastic bags, some grocers and shoppers have switched back to paper bags.[7]

Kroger decided to switch to plastic in 1986 because they could save 3 cents per bag. There was a meeting with employees at Store 100, Toledo, Ohio, asking for ideas for the store, and management dropped a box on the table. After looking at the product, one of the baggers burst out laughing and said: “So you’re going to switch to plastic to save 3 cents a bag, but now you need 2 baggers at each checkout, one to open the bag.” to hold and one to put the groceries in, or you’ll have a queue all the way to the back of the store. He panicked and asked him how to fix it.. and he asked for a wire hanger and a paper punch paper bag dispenser. His name was Joseph Poirier. So he essentially invented both the plastic bag with holes in the arm and the plastic bag dispenser on the spot, and he was still in high school.

In 2015, the world’s largest paper shopping bag was made in the UK and registered by Guinness World Records.[8] Also in 2015, the European Union passed Directive (EU) 2015/720, which mandates a reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic bags per person to 90 by 2019 and 40 by 2025.[9]

In 2018, the “European Paper Bag Day” was launched by the platform The Paper Bag, an association of the leading European kraft paper manufacturers and paper bag producers. The annual day of action takes place on October 18th and aims to raise consumer awareness of paper carrier bags as a sustainable packaging solution. It was created to encourage more people to act responsibly and use, reuse and recycle paper bags. With various activities at the local level, the association wants to open up dialogue with consumers and give them informative insights into the topic of paper packaging.[10]

In April 2019, the European Union adopted Directive (EU) 2019/904 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.[11]

Standard brown paper bags are made from kraft paper. Paper carrier bags, often used in department stores or as gift bags, can be made from any type of paper and in any color. There are two different types of paper carrier bag handles: flat handles and cord handles. Paper carrier bags made from fresh kraft paper are specially developed for sophisticated packaging. Paper bags can be made from recycled paper, although some local laws require bags to contain a minimum percentage of recycled content.[12]

Paper bags can be made to withstand more pressure or weight than plastic bags.

Paper grocery bags, brown paper bags, grocery bags, paper bread bags, and other lightweight carrier bags have a single layer of paper. Various constructions and designs are available. Many are printed with store and brand names. Paper bags are not waterproof. Types of paper bags are: laminated, twisted, flat tenon. While not fully waterproof, the laminated case has a laminate that protects the outside to some extent.[13]

Multi-wall (or multi-wall) paper sacks, also called industrial paper sacks, industrial sacks or shipping bags, are widely used for packaging and transporting dry powdered and granular materials such as fertilizers, animal feed, sand, dry chemicals, flour and cement. Many have multiple plies of sack paper, printed outer plies, and inner plies.[14] Some paper sacks have a layer of plastic or polyethylene-coated paper in between to provide a water-repellent, insect-resistant, or rodent barrier.

There are two basic types of sacks: open mouth sacks and valve sacks. A mouthbag is a tube of paper layers with the bottom sealed. The pouch is filled through the open mouth and then closed by sewing, gluing or tape. Valve bags are closed at both ends and are filled via a valve. A typical example of a valve bag is the cement bag.

Quality standard and certification[ edit ]

The durability of paper bags can be measured according to the European test standard EN13590:2003. This standard is based on scientifically conducted studies and helps retailers avoid inferior tote bags. The quality certification system for paper bags is based on this standard. The test method involves subjecting the tote bag to heavy weights as it is repeatedly lifted. The size of the paper bag is taken into account because the larger their volume, the heavier the load they must be able to carry. As a result of the certification, the paper bag is labeled with the weight and volume it is allowed to carry. It is advisable to choose a tested and certified paper bag.

Sustainability[ edit ]

The raw material for paper production – cellulose fibers obtained from wood – is a renewable and natural raw material. However, environmental concerns have been raised about types of timber harvesting such as B. Clearcut, voiced. Due to their biodegradable properties, paper bags degrade in a short time (two to five months).[15] Using natural water-based colors and starch-based adhesives, paper bags do not harm the environment.

Most paper bags made in Europe are made from cellulose fibers sourced from sustainably managed European forests. They are obtained from tree thinning and process waste from the lumber industry. Sustainable forest management maintains biodiversity and ecosystems and provides habitat for wildlife, recreation areas and jobs. This sustainable forest management is evidenced by the FSC® or PEFC™ certification of paper products. Consumers can look for the FSC and PEFC seals on their paper bags to ensure they are made from sustainably sourced fibre.

As a product of wood, paper stores carbon throughout its lifespan. This carbon sequestration time is extended when the paper is recycled because the carbon remains in the cellulose fibers.

Paper bags can be used multiple times. Paper bag manufacturers recommend reusing paper carrier bags as often as possible to further reduce the environmental impact.

recycling[ edit ]

Paper bags are highly biodegradable and recyclable, so they don’t leave the same environmental footprint as plastic bags. The fibers are reused an average of 3.6 times in Europe, while the world average is 2.4 times.[16]

Plastics or waterproof coatings or layers make recycling difficult.[17] Paper bag recycling is done by repulping the paper recycle and pressing it into the required shapes.

Security [edit]

Compared to plastic bags, paper bags pose less risk of choking to small children or animals.

Branding and marketing[edit]

Paper grocery bags can be used as a vehicle to project retailers’ brand image. Paper is very tactile due to its texture and shape. Its print quality and color reproduction enable creativity in advertising and brand image development. In addition, they achieve maximum visibility and great appreciation among customers. Using paper bags is a sign of commitment to the environment, and by using packaging from renewable, recyclable and biodegradable sources, retailers and brand owners are helping to reduce the use of non-biodegradable shopping bags. Paper carrier bags can be a visible part of corporate social responsibility and are in line with a sustainable consumer lifestyle.[18]

Brown bag[ edit ]

While brown is the color of the most common type of paper bag (brown is the natural color of wood fiber), this pair of words means more than just color.

The verb form brown bag, depending on the content, can be an act of civil disobedience (and illegal)[19] or an action by “60 million American brown baggers,” described in a New York Times market research study as “uplifted.”[20]

The former refers to the lack of an alcohol license, while the latter “is particularly true for those following a vegetarian, low-salt, low-cholesterol or kosher diet.”

The noun form of the term, which was included in the 1950 Merriam-Webster dictionary, refers to the use of a paper bag instead of a lunch box. William Safire traces this back to an article in Time Magazine.

If the contents are solid foods, they can be preserved or upgraded before consumption, as “a sizeable minority of brown baggers have access to microwave ovens or refrigerators.”[20]

Anti-Brown Bag Law in New York, USA [ edit ]

The words “Brown-bagging is the genteel disguise…from a patron to supply his own liquor when he dines at the local restaurant” were published in 1967.

In 1985, to prevent individuals (or groups) from bringing alcoholic beverages into food establishments that did not have a liquor license, the New York State Liquor Authority pushed for a law that New York City Mayor Ed Koch passed months after his “arrest.” denounced for it. 21] The New York Times noted that some are calling the bill “the Anti-Brown Bag Act.”[19]

Brown bag report[ edit ]

The advertising agent who developed ads for the product as a filtered “female brand”[18][22]: S.LB-6 prior to the Marlboro Man[20] developed “The Brown-Bag Report” with financial support in 1981. by Swift, Carnation, General Mills and American Can.

Symbolism [edit]

While in the United States the lunch box or lunch pail was used as a symbol of the working class, Safire wrote: “In the metaphor of the modern worker, the brown bag has replace the lunch pail.”[19]

About a third of Brown Bagger are school children.[20]

The “Brown Paper Bag Test” was part of a discriminatory practice by colorists throughout African American history, comparing a person’s skin tone to the color of a brown paper bag.[23]

Associations[edit]

The Paper Bag platform consists of leading European paper manufacturers and paper bag manufacturers. It was founded in 2017 to represent the interests of the European paper bag industry and to promote the benefits of paper packaging. The paper bag is controlled by the organizations CEPI Eurokraft and EUROSAC.

Other uses[edit]

Paper bags are commonly used to carry items. However, they were used for other purposes. In 1911, English chef Nicolas Soyer wrote a cookbook, Paper-Bag Cookery, on how to use clean, odorless paper bags for cooking, as an extension of the en papillote technique and as an alternative to pots and pans]

20th Century Racial Discrimination Practices Among African Americans

“The Brown Paper Bag Test” is a term in African American oral history used to describe a discriminatory practice by colorists within the 20th-century African American community of comparing a person’s skin tone to the color of a brown paper bag becomes . This test can be traced back to the days of slavery, when slave owners kept the fair-skinned slaves inside. The test was supposedly used to determine what privileges a person might have; Only those with a skin color matching a brown paper bag or lighter were granted access or membership privileges. Many believed the test was used by many African American social institutions such as sororities, fraternities, and churches in the 20th century.[1]

The term is also used in reference to larger issues of class and social stratification and colorism within African American populations. Because of their dark complexion, people were denied access to several public spaces and resources.[2] The test was used at the entrance to social events where a brown paper bag was taped to the door and anyone darker than the bag was denied entry.

Color distinction[ edit ]

Privilege has long been associated with race in the African American community, dating back to the days of slavery. Mixed-race children of white fathers sometimes received privileges ranging from more desirable jobs, apprenticeships, or formal education to assignment of property or even freedom from enslavement. African Americans “contributed to colorism because they have benefited from the privilege of having a skin color closer to that of whites and have embraced the notion that privilege goes with fair skin in America”.[3] Light-skinned people were granted certain social and economic advantages over black people, even if they were discriminated against. According to Gordon, “light-skinned blacks formed exclusive clubs” after slavery was abolished in the United States.[4] Some clubs were called “Blue Vein Societies”, suggesting that if a person’s skin was fair enough to show the blue tinge of the veins, they had more European ancestry (and therefore higher social status). Such discrimination was resented by darker-skinned African Americans. According to Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his book The Future of the Race (1996), the practice of the brown paper bag test may have originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, where there was a sizeable Third Class of free people of color dating from the French colonial era. [5] The test referred to ideals of beauty, with some people believing that lighter skin and more European facial features were generally more attractive.

From 1900 to about 1950, “paper bag parties” are said to have taken place in neighborhoods of major American cities with high concentrations of African Americans. Many churches, fraternities and nightclubs used the “brown paper bag” principle as an admissions test. People in these organizations would take a brown paper bag and hold it against a person’s skin. If a person was lighter than the bag, they were let in.[6]

There is also an odd color dynamic that persists in our culture. In fact, New Orleans invented the brown paper bag party—usually at an indoor gathering—where anyone darker than the bag taped to the door was denied entry. The brown bag criterion survives as a metaphor for how the black cultural elite literally establishes caste along the color lines within black life. In my many trips to New Orleans, whether to lecture at one of its universities or colleges, to preach from one of its pulpits, or to speak at an empowerment seminar during the annual Essence Music Festival, I have observed how color politics among Blacks at work is people. Some historically black colleges and universities used color tests to critique candidates for admission.[8] A person’s skin tone could affect their admission to a top school. For example, Audrey Elisa Kerr points to colleges that require applicants to send personal photos.[9] Kerr noted how this practice took place at a popular HBCU, Howard University.[9] dr Arnold told Kerr a story about young women in Howard. dr Arnold had heard that colorism was a factor in getting admission to Howard.[9] Discrimination was also practiced by fraternities and sororities, whose members self-selected others like themselves, generally those reflecting part European ancestry.[10] Multiracial people who had been free before the American Civil War sought to distinguish themselves from the mass of freedmen after the war, who appeared to be largely of African descent and had been forced into slavery.

Colorism through the centuries[edit]

The offspring of African males and White females were often born into freedom because their mothers had their mothers’ legal status as slaves or freelancers, regardless of their skin color.[11][12] A law introduced in Virginia and other colonies in the 17th century dictated that the legal status of these children would be determined by that of their mothers and not their fathers, contrary to established common law precedent ] These free offspring were well established , and descendants moved to the frontier regions of Virginia, North Carolina, and West as the territories opened up. Some prominent Americans were descendants of these early free families, such as Ralph Bunche, who served as ambassador to the United Nations.[13]

As early as the 18th century, travelers noted the variety of colors and features seen in Virginia slaves, as European ancestry was evident. Light-skinned slaves, some of whom were descendants of masters and their sons, were sometimes better treated on plantations, with domestic chores in the master’s home, including as companions or maids to his legitimate children.[14] Some of them were educated or at least allowed to learn to read. On occasion, the master may have arranged an apprenticeship for a mixed-race son and freed him upon completion, particularly during the first two decades after the American Revolution, when numerous slaves were being freed in the Upper South. In this region, the percentage of people of color who were free rose from 1 to over 10 percent from the Revolution to 1810. By 1810, 75 percent of Delaware’s blacks were free.[15]

Newly imported Africans and Afro-Americans with less visible European ancestry were used for hard field work, and abuse in the fields was more common. As tensions surrounding slave rebellions increased in the 19th century, the slave states imposed further restrictions, including bans on slave education and slave movements. These slaves could be punished for trying to learn to read and write.

In Louisiana in particular, Creoles of color long formed a third class during the years of slavery. They had attained high levels of literacy and sophistication under French and Spanish rule, were educated, took the names of white fathers or lovers, and often received property from the white men associated with their families. Many became artisans, owners, and sometimes slave owners themselves. Unlike the Upper South, where free African Americans varied widely in their appearance, free people of color in New Orleans and the Deep South tended to be lighter-skinned due to generations of intermarriage with people of European descent. After the United States negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, more Americans settled in New Orleans, bringing with them their binary approach to society, in which each person was classified only as black or white. They began restricting the privileges of Creoles of color.[16]
