Basic concept of FTP file transfer

There are always at least two machines involved in an FTP file transfer. This pair of machines can be either:

1) an FTP client and an FTP server or

2) two FTP servers. A file transfer that involves two servers is called a server-to-server file transfer.

This post will focus on Scenario 1 presented below.

The client is the file transfer software used to upload (send) or download (retrieve) files to or from the server. It can also be used to navigate and search specific directories on that server. This is what you see on a typical FTP client (see screenshot below).

Notice how an FTP client can view the directory contents (i.e. files and folders) of both the client and the server. Client-side content is typically referred to as “local,” while server-side content is typically referred to as “remote.”

As a server, an FTP server can easily support multiple clients at the same time.

Once files are uploaded to a server, other computers, including clients and other servers, can access those files.

3. Enter the IP address of the FTP server (e.g. 192.168.0.150), the URL of the FTP site (e.g. ftp://touchscreentoday.com) or the hostname (e.g. touchscreentoday .com) a. In our example, this information is entered in the Host field.

4. If your FTP client supports multiple file transfer protocols, select FTP as the desired protocol.

Upload and download a file to/from an FTP server

To upload a file, your current directory on the client side (Local System) should be the directory containing the file to be uploaded. For example, we want to upload the file named “AnyClient User Manual.odt”. So we navigate to the folder that contains this file.

Next, go to the server side (Remote System) and navigate to the destination folder. This is the folder on the server where you want your file to be saved. Again, simply double-click on the desired folder to navigate. In our example, we want to save our uploaded file in the “Uploads” folder as shown below.

Instead of using FTP to send files, it’s smarter to use a secure FTP solution like FTPS or SFTP to transfer data. Just as an outdated computer can no longer keep up with your business needs today, neither can FTP.

Here are some reasons why you should avoid using FTP sites to share files:

FTP is not encrypted. When files are shared via FTP, files are sent in clear text. This means that all information related to the file transfer is visible to everyone, including sensitive details like username and password. Without any encryption or protection, your data is easily accessible to anyone, even with the absolute hacking skills.

There really is no solution when it comes to FTP’s lack of security. FTP alone cannot protect your data. Even if you invest in separate encryption software for the files to be sent, your access data will be transmitted over the Internet in plain text. Additionally, once you have invested in encryption software, it is your company’s responsibility to manage your encryption keys and encrypted data. This is no small undertaking.

FTP is not convenient. FTP requires a third-party application (FTP client) to be installed on the user’s computer. Although some like Filezilla are free to download and install, some companies frown on the installation of third-party apps by their employees, either altogether or at least without contacting the IT department. FTPS and SFTP are the same in this regard.

Although “FTP clients” that include FTPS or SFTP capabilities are generally not as convenient as, say, a web browser, they still have the benefit of being able to automate file transfers and remote-to-local file synchronization.

FTP has been around for as long as I can remember; and according to Rapid7, it’s still widely used today, with over 21 million FTP servers existing on the Internet today.

Unfortunately, this cornerstone of file transfer is woefully unprepared for today’s world of data breaches and targeted hacking campaigns, as it offers no protection for files in transit or while saved to disk. This means files are transmitted in clear text, making them easy targets for interception and theft.

As if that wasn’t enough to worry about, regulatory compliance laws have been and continue to be tightened, meaning legacy FTP servers that could be critical to business operations are becoming too risky to continue to be operated.

The good news, however, is that there are alternatives — and in this blog post, we’re going to cover five of them.

SFTP (SSH file transfer protocol)

This extension of the popular remote command execution protocol SSH allows files to be transferred over a secure connection.

The main benefit of SFTP is that it creates and encrypts a data stream between the client and the server, which means the data sent between them is encrypted.

Additionally, SFTP supports two-factor authentication via a key exchange between client and server to identify themselves as the correct parties in addition to a username and possibly in combination or as a substitute for a static password.

SFTP has become the de facto replacement for FTP and is often mistakenly referred to as secure FTP.

FTPS (File Transfer Protocol over SSL/TLS)

Although SFTP is considered a secure upgrade to FTP, FTPS should really hold that crown.

Similar to SFTP, FTPS creates a secure connection between client and server for transferring files. Except that FTP uses SSL instead of SSH to make this connection.

FTPS runs in two modes – explicit and implicit.

Explicit FTPS is the standard today, largely overtaking implicit. Using FTP port 21, explicit FTPS is customizable and can be configured to use SSL when authenticating, transferring data, both, or neither.

While implicit FTPS, the stricter of the two, uses port 990 and creates an SSL/TLS tunnel once the client connects to the server. By using implicit FTPS, you can operate FTP and FTPS on different ports and thus have both options available.

AS2 (Applicability Statement 2)

AS2 is a popular protocol that uses EDI to securely and reliably transmit sensitive data over the Internet.

As an upgrade from the previous AS1 protocol, AS2 supports encrypting messages, which are then exchanged with a third party over HTTPS.

AS2 uses a secure TLS layer, so files can be transmitted encrypted from source to destination over the internet, and with digital certificates used for authentication.

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure)

Probably best known as a secure protocol used to serve web pages in a web browser, HTTPS can also be used to transfer files.

It encrypts incoming traffic to a website using an SSL/TLS session, thus encrypting traffic between source and destination – keeping all files nice and secure. This is also why all website payment pages use HTTPS (hopefully!) as it prevents card payment details from being intercepted.

HTTPS has become an incredibly popular protocol used for all types of secure communications over the past few years due to its ease of implementation and widespread knowledge of how to configure it among IT teams.

MFT (Managed File Transfer)

The real evolution of file transfer is found in the MFT market, where solutions can include all of the transfer protocols listed above; and can be turned on/off or assigned to specific users and connections as needed.

Typically, MFT solutions include features such as granular auditability, on-disk encryption, and interoperability with authentication sources such as LDAP or Microsoft Azure.

Who cares you think? Well, users of FTP or the File Transfer Protocol.

During the pandemic, Google delayed its plan to end FTP, and now that things have calmed down somewhat, Google recently announced that it will be returning to the kill with Chrome version 86, which is once again declining support, and will do so for kill well in Chrome 88.

(Mozilla announced similar plans for Firefox, citing security concerns and the age of the underlying code.)

It’s one of the oldest protocols supporting the mainstream internet – it’s turning 50 next year – but these mainstream applications are about to outpace it.

Let’s reflect on the history of FTP, the network protocol that’s lasted longer than pretty much any other.

1971

The year that Abhay Bhushan, an Indian-born MIT master’s student, first developed the File Transfer Protocol. Two years after Telnet, FTP was one of the first examples of a working suite of applications developed for what was then known as ARPANET, predating email, Usenet, and even the TCP/IP stack. Like telnet, FTP still has some uses but has declined in importance on the modern Internet mainly due to security concerns, with encrypted alternatives taking its place – in the case of FTP, SFTP, a file transfer protocol that works over the Secure Shell Protocol (SSH) , the protocol that has largely replaced telnet.

FTP is so old that it predates email – and actually played the role of an email client in the beginning

Of the many application-level programs developed for the early ARPANET, it is perhaps not surprising that FTP was the one that stood above all to find a way into the modern age.

The reason for this lies in its basic functionality. It is essentially a utility that facilitates data transfer between hosts, but the secret of its success is that it has leveled the ground between these hosts to some extent. As Bhushan describes in his requests for comments, the biggest challenge with using telnet at the time was that every host was a little different.

“Differences in terminal properties are handled by host system programs according to standard protocols,” he explained, citing both telnet and the remote job-entry protocol of the era. “However, you have to know the different conventions of remote systems in order to be able to use them.”

The FTP protocol he developed attempted to circumvent the challenges of connecting directly to the server by using an approach he called “indirect use,” which allowed programs to be transferred or run remotely. Bhushan’s “first cut” on a protocol still in use in a descendant form decades later used the directory structure to identify the differences between individual systems.

In a passage from the RFC, Bhushan wrote:

I tried to present a user-level protocol that would allow users and programs to use remote host computers indirectly. The protocol facilitates not only file system operations but also program execution on remote hosts. This is achieved by defining requirements that are handled by cooperating processes. Aligning with the transaction sequence provides greater security and would make error checking easier. The notion of data types is introduced to facilitate the interpretation, reconfiguration, and storage of simple and limited forms of data at individual host sites. The protocol is easily extendable.

In an interview with the Mapping the Journey podcast, Bhushan noted that he came to develop the protocol because he saw a need for applications for the nascent ARPANET system, including the need for email and FTP. These early applications became the fundamental building blocks of the modern Internet and have been greatly improved in the decades since.

Due to the limited computing capabilities of the time, Bhushan noted that email-style functionality was a part of FTP early on, allowing messages and files to be distributed over the protocol in a lighter format — and for four years, FTP was technical seen some kind of email.

“So we said, ‘Why don’t you put two commands in FTP called mail and mailfile?’ So mail is like regular text messages, mailfile are email attachments, which is what you have today,” he said in the Interview.

Of course, Bhushan wasn’t the only person who left his mark on this fundamental early protocol and eventually ventured outside of academia with a role at Xerox. The protocol he created continued to grow without him, receiving a number of updates in RFCs in the 1970s and 1980s, including an implementation that allowed it to support the TCP/IP specification circa 1980.

While there have been some modest updates since then to keep up with the times and add support for newer technologies, the version of the protocol we use today originated in 1985 when Jon Postel and Joyce K. Reynolds developed RFC 959, an update of its predecessor Protocols that form the basis of current FTP software. (Postel and Reynolds, among others, were also working on the domain name system at the time.) Although described in the document as “intended to correct some minor documentation errors, improve the explanation of some protocol features, and add some new optional commands”, is it’s still the version that stuck.

Given its age, FTP has many inherent weaknesses, many of which are still manifest today. For example, transferring a folder of files with many small files using FTP is extremely inefficient, which works much better for large files as it limits the number of individual connections required.

In many ways, because FTP was so early in the history of the Internet, it defined the shape of the many protocols that came after it. A good way to think about it is to compare it to something that often improves by leaps and bounds over the decades – say, basketball sneakers. Sure, Converse All-Stars are good shoes and still work well in the right environment today, but for high-performance basketball players, something from Nike, possibly with the Air Jordan brand, is far more likely to succeed.

The File Transfer Protocol is the Converse All-Star of the Internet. It was file transfer before file transfer was cool, and it still carries some of that vibe.

“No one made money off the internet. If anything, it was a huge sink. We fought the good fight. We knew there was potential. But anyone who tells you they knew what was going to happen is lying. Because I was there.”

– Alan Emtage, the creator of Archie, considered the Internet’s first search engine and debated with the Internet Hall of Fame why his invention, which allowed users to search anonymous FTP servers for files, didn’t make him rich in the end. Long story short, the internet was non-commercial at the time, and Emtage, a graduate student and technical support officer at Montreal’s McGill University, used the school’s network to run Archie — without her permission. “But it was a great way to do that,” he told the website. “As the old adage goes, it’s far easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.” (Note: Like Bhushan, Emtage is an immigrant; he was born and raised in Barbados and came to Canada as a distinguished student.)

Why FTP may be the last connection to a certain kind of past that’s still online

As I wrote a few years ago, if you snag an old book on the internet and try to pull up some of the old links, your best chance of actually getting your hands on the featured software is via a major FTP site company. as these types of websites don’t usually go offline very often.

Large technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Mozilla, Intel, and Logitech used these websites for decades to distribute documentation and drivers to end users. And for the most part, these sites are still online and have content that has been there for years.

In many cases these sites are most useful when you need access to something really old like a driver or documentation. (Once I tried to get my Connectix QuickCam working, I knew it would come in handy.)

In a way, this setting can be less nerve wracking than trying to navigate a website because the user interface is consistent and working properly. (It can be pretty nightmarish digging through lots of web interfaces when all you need is one driver.) But it goes both ways – the simplicity also means that FTP often doesn’t handle modern standards as well and can be far trickier than modern file transfer methods.

As I wrote for Motherboard last year, these FTP sites (despite being archived in different locations) are becoming increasingly difficult to access as companies move away from this model or make the decision to take the old sites offline.

As I explained in the article, which includes an interview with the Internet Archive’s Jason Scott, the archive is taking steps to protect these old public FTP sites, which could go down at any time at this point.

Scott noted at the time that the long-term existence of these FTP sites was the exception rather than the rule.

“It was just this weird experience that FTP sites in particular could have 15 to 20 years of inertia now while they could be running untouched all the time,” he said.

With one of the main use cases of FTP sites making history once and for all, it may only be a matter of time before they disappear for good. I recommend before that happens to dive into one at some point and just see the weird things that are there. We no longer live in a world where you can just look through entire public company files and it’s a fascinating experience even at this late stage.

“FTP is a technology that has been ahead of its usage curve and is now attracting a critical mass of business users who find transmission via email extremely inefficient or impractical when dealing with large documents.”

– A passage from a 1997 story in Network World that argues that despite its awkwardness, FTP was still a good choice for many teleworkers and corporate internet users. Although written by a maverick—Roger Greene was the president of Ipswitch, a major developer of FTP programs of the time—his writing was still timely. It was a great way to transfer large files over networks and store them somewhere on a server. The problem is that although FTP has improved over time, it has eventually been surpassed by far more sophisticated replacement protocols (BitTorrent, SFTP, rsync, git, even modern variants of HTTP) and cloud computing solutions like Dropbox or Amazon Web Services becomes .

I used to run an FTP server. It was mostly about sharing music during my college days when people going to college were obsessed with sharing music. We had extremely fast connections, so it was the perfect speed to run an FTP server.

It was a great way to share a certain taste in music with the world, but the university system eventually got smart about file sharing and started limiting bandwidth, so that was it…or so I thought. (Do I regret running that server now? Sure. But at the time, I felt like I’d kind of pin it on the man. Which, let’s be honest, I wasn’t.)

Just as file sharing has largely moved away from those exciting times of more than 15 years ago, so have we evolved from the FTP servers of yesteryear. In the years since, we’ve largely learned more effective and safer techniques for remote file management. In 2004, it was widely considered best practice to use FTP to manage a web server. Today, with tools like Git that allow for efficient version control, this is seen as risky and inefficient.

Even with major browsers dropping FTP support in the coming months, it’s not like we’re completely running out of options. Of course, specialized software remains available. But more importantly, we replaced the old FTP protocol for all the right reasons.

Unlike cases like IRC (where the protocol lost popularity to commercial tools) and Gopher (where a sudden switch to a commercial model halted its growth), FTP is being retired from web browsers because its age underscores its lack of security infrastructure.

Some of its more prominent use cases, like public-facing anonymous FTP servers, have essentially gone out of fashion. But its primary use case was eventually superseded by more secure, modern versions of the same thing as SFTP.

And I’m sure someone somewhere in a reasonably technical job will argue that FTP will never die because there will always be a specific use case for it somewhere. Sure whatever. But for the vast majority of people, if Chrome FTP disconnects from the browser, they probably won’t find a reason to reconnect.

What does FTP stand for?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Let’s break this down. Essentially, a “protocol” or internet protocol is a set of procedures or rules that enable electronic devices to communicate with each other. FTP is a set of rules that devices on a TCP/IP network (the Internet) use to transfer files. When you use the Internet, you actually use a number of different protocols. Use HTTP for browsing. Use XMPP to send and receive instant messages. FTP is simply the protocol used to move files.

What is an FTP server?

FTP servers are software applications that allow files to be transferred from one device (such as a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer) to another. It may sound complicated, but FTP servers are simply computers that have an FTP address and are dedicated to receiving FTP connections. They perform two simple tasks: “Get” and “Put”. You can either “get” files from the FTP server or “put” files on the FTP server. When you upload files, they are transferred from your personal device to the server. Alternatively, when you download files, they are transferred from the server to your personal device. Therefore, at the most basic level, FTP servers are the middle point between the receiver and the sender.

How does FTP work?

FTP is a client-server protocol. In other words, the client requests the files and the server provides them. Therefore, an FTP protocol requires two basic channels to establish a connection:

Command channel: initiates the command, carries basic information, i. H. which files to access

Data Channel: Transfers the file data between the two devices

To establish a connection, users must provide credentials to the FTP server, which typically uses port number 21 as the default communication mode. In very simple terms, “ports” are numbers used to identify information transactions over a network. It’s also important to note that there are two different FTP connection modes: active and passive.

In active FTP mode, the server takes an active role by approving a data request. However, active mode can sometimes cause problems with firewalls blocking unauthorized third-party sessions. That’s when passive mode comes into play. In passive mode, the server does not actively maintain the connection, which means that the user establishes both the data channel and the command channel. Essentially, the server “listens” but does not actively participate, allowing the other device to do most of the work.

FTP is often used to manage a large number of files, so it can often come in handy in web development. When making changes to a website, you can manage file transfers with an FTP session, which provides an easy way to upload specific files, add image files, move web templates, and so on. Similarly, IT professionals can also use File Transfer Protocol to transfer large batches of server files within a closed system.

What are the benefits of FTP?

FTP has a few advantages worth mentioning. Most importantly, it can transfer multiple files at once, resume a transfer when the connection is lost, and schedule transfers.
