Phosphorescence versus Fluorescence –

what is the difference?

While these may appear the same, they are actually very different technologies. Phosphorescence occurs when a material absorbs energy and then releases it over time. Applications of phosphorescent inks on CPG packaging are typically referred to as glow-in-the-dark.

The intensity and duration of the glow depend on the amount of ink coverage and the intensity and duration of exposure to sunlight or UVA light at 365 nanometer wavelengths such as black light. More intense light charges the pigment faster; With less intense light, it takes longer to achieve a strong glow-in-the-dark effect. For reference, full daylight can be around 10,000 to 50,000 lux depending on clear or cloudy skies. Normal offices are around 500 lux, while grocery and retail stores can be around 750 lux. In sunlight, the maximum charge would be reached in five minutes. Under indoor fluorescent light at 500 lux, it would max out in 10 minutes.

MagnaColours® launch new glow-in-the-dark ink ‘Glow FX’

MagnaPrint® Glow FX is a ready-to-use, water-based printing paste developed by Magna for intense, glow-in-the-dark printing effects. The product has no base color and therefore remains invisible under natural light, but in the dark the charged inks glow brightly in green, light blue or aqua. This effect can even last up to 15 minutes without exposure to additional natural or ultraviolet light.

The launch of Glow FX follows a slew of new product launches including UV-reactive MagnaPrint® Invisible Ink, two-tone pearlescent MagnaPrint® MultiChrome and MultiShine inks, and the industry’s first EDGE range that stays wet on screen but dries instantly when it does applied to fabric.

Helen Parry, Managing Director of MagnaColours®, said: “At Magna we are proud of the large number of special effect inks in our product range. We are constantly innovating to meet the needs of the fashion and screen printing industries. The addition of Glow FX to Magna’s product portfolio demonstrates how we continue to innovate and expand our range of water-based inks, offering even more options to printers and brands.”
