Using a streaming device is the easiest way to connect to Wi-Fi because of its obvious benefits.

It’s user friendly. Aside from providing Internet access for your TV, it also has so many built-in applications like YouTube and Twitter. However, the content offered varies from one streaming device to another.

There are various streaming devices on the market. The exact method of connecting the device to your TV may vary depending on the type.

However, the general process remains the same:

Locate the HDMI port on your TV and connect the device to that port. Connect the USB cable to your device and connect the USB port to your TV. Turn on the TV and pair it to your device’s input. Download any app that is required. Accept all terms and conditions to start streaming.

Some of the most popular applications used on Smart TVs today include Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and YouTube. There are many other third-party applications available for download that will also allow you to customize your Smart TV to your liking.

Don’t worry, there are quite a few options on the market to turn your “dumb” TV into a smart TV. To turn your old TV into a Smart TV, you need an external streaming media player. Sometimes this is called Smart TV Converter Box. It’s more of a layman’s term, but essentially this is a streaming media player.

Connection The first thing you need to check is whether your television has an HDMI connection. Most likely it will, but if it doesn’t, you can purchase an HDMI to RCA adapter (found here on Amazon). Amazon Fire TV Stick Fire TV is Amazon’s streaming platform based on a heavily modified Android operating system. I’d say it has to be the most widely used on the market, with a heavy focus on Amazon’s own Prime media services. However, there are literally thousands of apps available, so you won’t be short of many options when it comes to streaming services.

Slightly larger than a flash drive, the Fire TV Stick connects to your HDMI port with a power cord protruding from the side for wall mounting. The included remote has built-in Alexa button functionality, so you can use voice commands to search for shows, pause, play, etc.

Finally, if you want to spend a few more bucks, you can upgrade to 4K resolution with the Fire Stick 4K.

Amazon Fire TV Cube The Fire TV Cube offers the same Fire TV services as the Fire Stick, with a few additions.

I would first like to point out that it’s larger and is more of a separate standalone unit that connects to your TV via an HDMI cable. While it’s only 3.4-inch square, it might not be the ideal choice for a wall-mounted TV, as you’ll have to get creative with where to place it and then hide the cables.

The Cube comes with an Ethernet port out of the box if you’d rather hardwire your internet connection than use your home WiFi. This can of course make for more efficient streaming, but by today’s standards it’s more relevant for 4K streaming.

If your TV doesn’t support 4K, that’s no problem, but if you want 4K resolution, you’ll need the Fire TV Cube or one of the 4K Fire Stick models. If your Wi-Fi can’t keep up with 4K streaming, you’ll need to use the Fire TV Cube’s built-in Ethernet connection. If you decide to buy a Fire Stick 4K, you might want to consider getting an Ethernet adapter for it.

The Fire TV Cube also has an Alexa smart speaker built into its base, so if you don’t already own an Amazon Echo, you’re basically getting 2 purchases in one.

Google Chromecast Ultra The Chromecast uses the “dongle” approach like the Fire Stick, rather than being a standalone unit like the Fire TV Box. It’s a slightly larger design than the Fire Stick and they’ve used it to include an Ethernet port.

The Ethernet port comes in handy when you’ve grown out of 1080P resolution, as Chromecast supports all 4K and HDR video formats with Google TV. It is also compatible with Google Home for voice commands.

Unlike previous versions, the Chromecast with Google TV has its own remote control. This is a step up from having to control everything from your phone or tablet using the Google Home app and integrations with supported third-party apps.

Apple TV 4K Let me start this section by saying that I’m biased towards the Apple TV sets from the start. They are unnecessarily expensive and will likely be phased out soon.

The features you pay for that come with the Apple TV devices are gradually becoming available with all other popular streaming devices via Apple’s downloadable apps. Among these features is being able to stream many media from your iOS devices including from your iTunes library. Many smart TVs now come with Apple AirPlay 2 support, and the Fire TV and Roku were recently announced to have Apple TV apps.

You can do almost everything (down to streaming from the most popular media services) that the other popular devices do. It also has Siri built in, just like Fire TV has Alexa and Google Chromecast has Google Home.

That being said, and simply put, this is an option that I’ll have to explain to you, but it’s not recommended.

Roku Premiere This is another easy-to-use, simple solution like the Fire Stick. However, the Roku design is somewhat flawed.

The device itself is a small, lightweight box that uses dangling cables – one that goes to the TV’s HDMI port and one that acts as a power cord. The HDMI cable does not usually allow itself to be laid flat on your TV stand as it is so light that it dangles from the cable itself. There’s an included adhesive strip that sticks it in place, but when you move it there’s another problem.

However, the Roku Premiere has a great user interface. Some may like the interaction better than other streaming media devices. You have about as many apps available as Fire TV, but Fire TV wipes them out in the gaming apps department.

The remote control isn’t quite as good as the Fire TV remote either. It uses IR technology, so you need direct line of sight to control the Roku. In this case you cannot hide the box behind your TV. There’s the option (for quite a bit of a price hike) to get the Roku Premiere Plus, which solves this problem.

How do I know if my TV is HD? Today your TV is most likely HD, especially if you have a flat screen. An HDTV is simply any TV that displays a screen resolution of 720p or higher. As of 2018, they account for 85% of all televisions in use. One way to tell if your TV is an HD TV is to look up your model number online. A simple Google search for the model number will usually take you to the manufacturer’s specs page for your TV. You should be able to find the model number on the back of the TV itself. If the resolution is at least 720p (1280 x 720), you have an HD TV.

How do I know if my TV has WiFi? If your TV has WiFi, you should see a WiFi Alliance logo on the box and often at the bottom of the screen on the bottom of the TV. In your settings menu you will also find a section for network connections or WiFi setup. Again, a simple Google search for your TV’s model number should easily answer this question.
