How do I know if my Xbox 360 controller has Bluetooth?
To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad.

Find out which Xbox controller you own
First off, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, now widely popular as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is almost identical to the Xbox One’s controller. Both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods of connecting to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.
The original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that came with the Xbox One S and later consoles include wireless Xbox communications and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different; For non-Bluetooth gamepads, you need a wireless dongle. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked up yours in the last four years, there’s a good chance it already has Bluetooth.
To determine if you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic around the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the front of the controller, with no seams, you have a bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the face of the controller, then it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular record button between the menu and view buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro-USB, then it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.
Connect your Xbox controller to the PC using a wired connection
This is very simple, but you will need a physical cable connecting the controller to your PC. Here’s how you do it.
Connect one end of your USB to Micro USB or USB to USB-C cable (depending on your controller version) to the controller. Plug the other end into your PC
That’s it! It’s automatically configured on Windows 10 and works with virtually every game on your PC.
Connect your Xbox controller to the PC via Bluetooth
Pairing the Xbox controller to your PC via Bluetooth is almost the same as pairing it to your Xbox One or Xbox Series. You activate the controller by pressing and holding the Guide button and then pressing and holding the pairing button for three seconds until the Guide button flashes. This means it is in pairing mode. When connecting the controller to a console, press and hold the pairing button on the system itself. If you connect the controller to a Windows 10 PC, you have to go through a few menus. You will also need a Bluetooth USB dongle if your PC does not have Bluetooth. Here is the complete step-by-step process:
Press and hold the Guide button to turn on the controller. Press and hold the pairing button for three seconds until the guide button flashes. Right-click the Bluetooth icon on your taskbar. Click Add Bluetooth Device. Click Add Bluetooth or other device and select Bluetooth. Click Xbox Wireless Controller. Wait for the Guide button to turn solid white and the Bluetooth menu to show that the controller is connected.
You can now use the Xbox Wireless Gamepad with your PC and play the vast majority of modern games that support controllers. However, you can’t use the headset jack on the gamepad, as can Sony’s DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers. Although you can use a wired gaming headset with a controller and associated gaming system, no audio is sent through the jack when connected to a PC via Bluetooth.
Connect your Xbox controller to the PC with a USB adapter
If you have an older Xbox One controller, or just want to use your newer one with Microsoft’s proprietary wireless connection instead of Bluetooth (and get headset connectivity), you’ll need to get the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10. It’s a USB dongle to connect directly to your Xbox gamepad without Bluetooth setup or pairing. All you have to do is plug in the dongle and pair it with your controller as if you were pairing your Xbox by pressing the pairing button on each device.
This $25 adapter has a few advantages over Bluetooth. For starters, you can use up to eight gamepads with the adapter, while Microsoft recommends using only one at a time with Bluetooth. The headset jack is also enabled when using the adapter, with customizable settings in the Xbox app for Windows 10.

How do you connect a wired Xbox controller to Android?
Technically, you can connect any wired controller if your Android device’s USB port supports On-The-Go (OTG). Phones and tablets use USB Micro-B and USB-C ports for charging and sending data to and from a connected PC, but OTG adds support for USB-based devices like mice, keyboards, flash drives, and so on.

How to connect an Xbox One controller to Android
Do you want to play games on your Android phone or tablet but despise the on-screen touch controls? Since many games now include controller support, it’s good to know how to connect Xbox One controller to Android. You need Android 9 Pie or newer and both devices must be Bluetooth enabled.
Open the settings on your Android device. This can be represented by a gear icon on the home screen or in the app drawer. Ordinarily, you can also swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings bar, then tap the gear icon to open Settings. Locate the Bluetooth settings. This may or may not be hidden under a different category depending on the interface of the device. For example, Samsung’s One UI interface (below) places Bluetooth under Connections. Turn on Bluetooth if you haven’t already. On the Xbox controller, press the Xbox button until it lights up. This turns the device on. On the back of the controller you’ll see a small USB Micro-B connector and a sync button. Press the sync button until the Xbox button on top starts blinking. It is now in Bluetooth pairing mode. Go back to your Android device and tap Bluetooth. Your device searches for other Bluetooth devices. Tap the Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears in the list and the two devices will be automatically paired. For a simple check that the pairing was successful, move the Xbox One controller’s thumb sticks to navigate the Android device’s interface.
Controller support in Android is not new
Technically, you can connect any wired controller if your Android device’s USB port supports On-The-Go (OTG). Phones and tablets use USB Micro-B and USB-C ports to charge and send data to and from a connected PC, but OTG adds support for USB-based devices like mice, keyboards, flash drives, and more.
Not all devices have OTG connectivity, and there’s no good way to find out if your device supports OTG without browsing the product page – which usually lists general information – or installing a questionable app. You’ll also need an adapter that connects the wired controller’s USB-A male connector to the Android device’s micro-B or USB-C female connector.
That said, wireless is the way to go. Bluetooth is the norm for all controllers that connect to Android, including the Xbox One controller. Microsoft’s peripheral uses proprietary Wi-Fi technology when connected to the Xbox One and certain PCs, but switches to Bluetooth for all other devices.
Does Android have Xbox One controller support?
Google added support for Xbox One controllers to Android 9 Pie, but the Xbox One controller requires Bluetooth when used with Android. Not all models have this component, especially devices that came with the original Xbox One console. You can tell a difference by looking at the controller’s design.

What you need and a quick note on XInput
The following Xbox controllers are compatible with Android and should connect easily to your phone:
Xbox 360 controller
Xbox One Controller (including Xbox One S/X refresh theme)
Xbox Elite Controller
Xbox Series S/X Controller
The single Xbox controller NOT compatible with Android is the original Xbox controller. This isn’t an Android-specific issue, however, as this controller also doesn’t work with Windows or modern Xboxes the way the controllers listed above do.
The reason is simple: XInput. Flash back to December 2005 – the Xbox 360 had just arrived, Windows XP SP1 was right around the corner and Windows Vista was only two years away.
Microsoft wanted to extend their gaming dominance to Windows as much as they did to Xbox, so they introduced XInput as an API for the Xbox 360 controllers. Since then, every Xbox controller uses XInput, as well as many derivative gamepad designs from companies like Logitech. After XP, later versions of Windows came with built-in XInput support right down to plug-and-play compatibility. The rest is history.
While XInput leaves the original controller in the wind, it ensures every Xbox controller since the original 360 is compatible with your modern PC or Android device.
Note: The Xbox 360 controller, wired or wireless, requires an OTG cable, it uses a proprietary signal (not Bluetooth).
Connecting a wireless Xbox controller on Android
First, swipe down from the top of the screen to open your quick menu. Long press the Bluetooth icon to bring up your Bluetooth configuration menu, or navigate to your Bluetooth configuration menu from your phone settings.
Once you’re in your Bluetooth menu, it’s time to click on “Pair new device”. While doing this, turn on your Xbox controller by long-pressing the Xbox button and holding the sync button on top to put it in search mode. As soon as the light flashes quickly, let go.
Your controller should appear in your list of available devices. Tap their name to pair them.
If pairing was successful, the controller should appear in the Currently Connected section.
Connecting a Wired Xbox Controller on Android
If you’re using an Xbox Series S/X controller or an Elite Series 2 controller, you’re in luck! These controllers come with USB-C cables, which should make it easy to connect your controller directly to most modern Android devices, which can be useful if you want to use them with your phone temporarily without manually unpairing them and re-pair your main PC or console.
For wired Xbox controllers dating back to the Xbox 360, you’ll first need to confirm which USB version your phone or tablet’s charging port is using. For example, if you have a micro-USB port on your phone or tablet, you should get a USB OTG (On The Go) adapter to use a wired Xbox 360 controller with the device. (Learn all you can do with an OTG adapter.)
Your controller is ready!
Now you know how to connect your Xbox controller to your phone. What’s next? Well, play some games of course! You can even sync your game progress between Android devices.

RetroArch and PPSSPP both have built-in Xbox controller support, with no controller configuration required before you can begin your games. Steam Link is the same offering and allows you to stream your games from your own PC (ideally on the same home network) as long as you have Steam Remote Play configured correctly on your system. How to connect an Xbox 360 controller to your Android device
The Xbox 360 Controller is the primary game controller for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 home video game console, introduced at E3 2005.[3] The Xbox 360 controller comes in both wired and wireless versions.[4] The Xbox controller is not compatible with the Xbox 360. The wired and wireless versions are also compatible with Microsoft PC operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.
The wireless controllers are powered by either AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack. The wired controllers can be plugged into one of the console’s USB ports or into a connected USB hub.

The Xbox 360 controller has the same basic familiar button layout as the Controller S, except that some of the auxiliary buttons have been moved. The Back and Home buttons have been moved to a more central location on the front of the controller, and the White and Black buttons have been removed and replaced with two new bumpers positioned over the analog triggers on the back of the controller. The controller features a 2.5mm TRS connector on the front panel that allows users to connect a headset for voice communication.[5] It also features a proprietary serial port[6] (which splits in two on either side of the headset port) for use with additional accessories, such as a headset. B. the chatpad.
On August 31, 2010, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) unveiled a new design of the Xbox 360 controller intended to replace the wireless controller bundled with the Play & Charge Kit. Along with small changes like the shape of the analog stick tops and grey-colored front buttons, the new controller features an adjustable directional pad that can be changed between a disc D-pad and a plus-shaped D-pad. The Control Pad was released in North America exclusively with Play & Charge Kits on November 9, 2010 and in Europe on February 2011.[7]
The Xbox 360 controller offers a standard USB human interface device software interface, but is designed for the Microsoft XInput interface library.[8] Although many PC video games support the XInput library, some games may not work with this controller.
Arrangement [ edit ]
A standard Xbox 360 controller has eleven digital buttons, two analog triggers, two analog sticks, and a digital D-Pad. There are four digital action buttons on the right side of the controller: a green button, a red button, a blue button, and a yellow button. The bottom right is the right analog stick, the bottom left is a digital D-pad, and the left is the left analog stick. Both analog sticks can also be clicked in to activate a digital button underneath. In the center of the controller face are digital “Home”, “Back” and “Guide” buttons. The “Guide” button is labeled with the Xbox logo and is used to turn on the console/controller and access the Guide menu. It’s also surrounded by the “light ring” that shows the controller number, flashes when connected, and provides notifications. The left and right “shoulders” each feature a digital shoulder button or “bumper” and analog trigger.
Wireless controllers also have an additional “connect” button located between the “bumpers” for easier syncing with the console.

Guide button [ edit ]
The Xbox 360 controller has a guide button in the center of its front face that offers a new functionality. Surrounding this button is a ring of light divided into four quadrants that provides players with different types of information during gameplay. For example, during a split-screen multiplayer match, a specific quadrant will light up to indicate to a player which part of the screen they are currently playing on. In this case, when the user presses the button, they access the Xbox guide; a menu that provides access to features like messaging friends, downloading content, voice chat, and customizing soundtracks while staying in the game. The Guide button also allows users to turn off the controller or console by holding the button for a few seconds (instead of just pressing it).
Accessories [edit]
Rechargeable battery pack [ edit ]
Battery pack, Play & Charge cable and quick charger
The rechargeable battery is a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery that provides up to 24 hours of continuous play for the wireless controller. It is an alternative to disposable AA batteries, which differ slightly in voltage and have higher disposal costs (financial and environmental). It comes as part of the Play & Charge Kit and Quick Charge Kit and can be charged with them. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery with the Quick Charge Kit; the Play & Charge Kit takes longer (and depends on whether the controller is used). An updated 35-hour version is included in the upgraded Play & Charge Kits and “Transforming D-Pad” controllers, while a 40-hour version is included in the upgraded Quick Charge Kit.
Wireless gaming receiver [ edit ]
The Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows
The Wireless Gaming Receiver (sold as the “Crossfire Wireless Gaming Receiver” in the UK) allows Xbox 360 wireless accessories such as wireless gamepads, racing bikes and headsets to be used on a Windows-based PC.[33] The device behaves similarly to an Xbox 360, allowing up to 4 controllers and 4 headsets to be connected to the receiver at the same time. The device has a range of 10 meters and a USB cable of 2 meters.[34] It was specifically designed to work with games that carry the “Games for Windows” logo, but will work with most games that allow a standard PC gamepad. The official Xbox website states that the adapter will work with “all future wireless devices”.[35]
Messenger kit [ edit ]
Xbox 360 Chatpad from the Messenger Kit connected to a wireless controller
The messenger kit consists of a wired Xbox 360 headset and a small keyboard known as a “chatpad”. The chatpad plugs into the front of the controller and can be used for any standard text input on the console. It is currently not compatible with wireless gaming receiver.
Non-game uses[edit]
The United States Navy has announced plans to use Xbox 360 controllers to control periscopes on new Virginia-class submarines for reasons of cost and familiarity.
Reception [edit]
The Xbox 360 controller received positive reviews upon its release. Previously, the original Xbox controller was, as IGN noted, “huge, ugly, cheap and uncomfortable” and classified as an “abomination”. Many of these issues were addressed with Microsoft’s releases of the Xbox Controller S and then the Xbox 360 Controller. IGN credited the Xbox 360 controller with being one of the “most ergonomically comfortable console controllers out there”. It was also praised for its improved button placement, working logo as a button, and Microsoft’s choice of bottom-mount headset ports instead of top-mounting them to minimize snagging cable issues.

You can use two different Xbox controllers with your Android devices: Xbox Wireless Controller and Xbox 360 Controller. The former are controllers for the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X consoles.
Newer Xbox wireless controllers, especially the Bluetooth controllers, are the easiest to use with your Android device. For Bluetooth controllers, you need to pair your device with the controller and you’re good to go. Google added support for Xbox One controllers with Android 9 Pie, so Bluetooth controllers work best. In a pinch, non-Bluetooth controllers also work.
If you have an Xbox One controller without Bluetooth connectivity or an Xbox 360 controller, you can still use both with your Android devices; The process is a bit more complicated. Requirements: An Android device with Bluetooth connectivity and Android 5.1.1 or later
An Xbox One Controller with Bluetooth To connect your Xbox Wireless Controller to an Android device: Make sure Bluetooth is turned on and open Settings. You can do this in a number of ways. The easiest way is to swipe down to see the quick access menu items. You can press and hold the Bluetooth button to open your Bluetooth settings. Or you can also go to your phone settings and find the Bluetooth options that way. Press the Xbox button on your controller to make sure it’s powered on; Then press and hold the sync button on the controller (top left) until the Xbox button starts blinking. Once the light starts flashing, it means the controller is in Bluetooth pairing mode. At this point it can be connected to your Android device. Go back to the Bluetooth settings on your Android device and pair the Xbox One controller with your device. The Xbox One controller should appear in the list of nearby devices ready to pair. If it doesn’t appear in this list, press Scan to search for the controller. When the device is in pairing mode, the Xbox button will flash; it is paired once it stops blinking. Depending on your phone or tablet, you should be able to see the controller working right away. Test it out using the directional pad and buttons to navigate your device’s system. Try your favorite game! Many games don’t require any special configuration before they’re ready to be played with a controller. Some games may require you to switch from touchscreen input to controller input in the game’s settings. Also Read: All About Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: The Best Value In Gaming?
If you’re not sure if your Xbox One controller has Bluetooth capabilities, there’s an easy way to find out. Your controller is Bluetooth-enabled if the area around your Xbox button is made of the same plastic as the rest of your controller. If the Xbox button is part of a separate piece (and color) of plastic, it’s not Bluetooth-enabled. A Bluetooth-enabled Xbox Wireless Controller looks like the image above. How to use an Xbox 360 controller on an Android device
The process is a bit more complicated if you want to use an Xbox 360 controller or a non-Bluetooth Xbox One controller. Of course it is still possible. If you already have the controller, it may be cheaper to configure your current controller instead of buying a Bluetooth controller. Requirements: A wired or wireless Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Xbox Core controller.
An OTG or “on the go” cable.
An Android device that supports OTG cables.
An Xbox 360 wireless receiver (if using an Xbox 360 wireless controller). To connect wired Xbox controllers to Android devices: Connect your OTG cable to your Android device. Connect your controller to the open USB port of the OTG cable. You can also connect the Xbox 360 controller wireless receiver to the OTG cable. Use it with your favorite games! The selection of games that support wireless controllers seems to be narrower than those that typically support wired controllers. Also, most games don’t have a button mapping option when using Xbox 360 controllers; This means you are stuck with the default button layout for this game. The main problem with playing on your smartphone is that these are both handheld products and require both hands. You could stand your phone up and hold the controller, but the best way to experience mobile gaming with a physical controller is with a mount. Let’s talk about some of our favorites. 8Bitdo Mobile Gaming Clip: 8Bitdo is another popular controller brand, and we like their gaming mount for its build quality. The unit consists partly of metal parts and is also adjustable in different positions. Not to mention that it’s also an affordable option. How to connect an Xbox 360 controller to your Android device
While there are many games that take advantage of a smartphone’s touchscreen, there are certain genres of games that just feel better with a physical controller. This includes fighting games, racing games and also RPGs to name a few. If you have an Xbox 360 controller laying around somewhere, here’s how you can connect it to your Android device to use it as a physical controller.
How to connect an Xbox 360 controller to Android
Now Microsoft is selling the Xbox 360 controller in either a wired or wireless version. Depending on which model you have, the connection methods to your Android smartphone or tablet are different.
Wired Xbox 360 Controller
For those who own the wired version of Xbox 360 controller, you need to buy an OTG cable. This has a USB-A connector on one end and a micro-USB/USB-C connector on the other end. Depending on your phone, you’ll need a USB-C to USB-A cable if it uses a USB-C port. However, if your phone still uses Micro-USB, you will need to get a Micro-USB to USB-A cable.
Now that you’ve got yourself a cable:
Plug the Micro-USB/USB-C connector into your smartphone Plug the cable from your Xbox 360 into the USB port on the cable The lights on the controller should light up and you’re good to go.
Wireless Xbox 360 Controller
Unlike the newer Xbox One controllers that rely on Bluetooth, the wireless version of the Xbox 360 controller uses its own wireless connection. This means it’s not quite as easy or straightforward to pair it with your Android phone or tablet. You need to purchase an OTG cable like the ones listed above along with a wireless receiver.
Once you’ve got yourself a wireless receiver:
Connect the Micro-USB/USB-C connector to your smartphone. Connect the wireless receiver to the USB-A port of the cable. Turn on your Xbox 360 controller. Press and hold the Xbox button on the controller. Press the small button on the wireless receiver. Press and hold the sync button on the controller. The lights should start blinking and the lights around the Xbox controller should start spinning. Once it stops spinning and blinking again, your Xbox 360 controller should be connected

Compatibility with games
Unfortunately, your mileage may vary here. Some games may support the Xbox 360 controller out of the box without any issues, but there may be some games that may require you to switch from touchscreen input to controller input, which you can find in the settings.
Since most games don’t offer button mapping, you’re stuck with the default button layout, so you may need to take some time to adjust to the new controls, and this may vary from game to game, so you’ll need to explore this yourself.
