The term go-go derives from the expression “go-go-go” for an energetic person[4] and was influenced by the French expression à gogo meaning “abundantly, in abundance”[5] what in is in turn derived from the Old French word la gogue for “joy, happiness”.[6] The term go-go dancer comes from the French bar Whiskey a Gogo in Juan-les-Pins, a seaside town near Cannes, which was among the first places in the world to replace live music with disc jockey-chosen discs offer the spectacle of paid dancers known as go-go girls.
In the 1960s[edit]
On June 19, 1964, Carol Doda began go-go dancing topless at the Condor Club on Broadway and the Columbus in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. She became the most famous go-go dancer in the world and danced at the Condor for 22 years.
Go-go dancers were hired as a regular at the Whiskey a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood in the Los Angeles area in July 1965. Go-go dancers were used in the mid-1960s as background dancers accompanying performances (real or lip-synched) by rock ‘n’ roll bands on teen music programs. Hullabaloo was a variety music series that aired on NBC from January 12, 1965 to August 29, 1966. The Hullabaloo Dancers – a team of four men and six women – performed regularly. Another dancer, model/actress Lada Edmund Jr., was best known as the caged “go-go girl” dancer in the Hullabaloo A-Go-Go segment near the show’s closing sequence. Other dance TV shows during this period like ABC’s Shindig! (September 16, 1964 – January 8, 1966) also featured go-go dancers in cages. Sometimes these cages were made of clear plastic with strings of lights inside; Sometimes the lights were synced to go in and out with the music. Shivaree (syndicated, 1965-1966), another music show, typically placed go-go dancers on scaffolding and on a platform behind the band that was performing.
