The infinity mirror (sometimes referred to as an infinity mirror) is a configuration of two or more parallel or nearly parallel mirrors that produce a series of progressively smaller reflections that appear to recede to infinity.[1][2] The front mirror of an infinity mirror is often semi-mirrored (a so-called one-way mirror), but this is not absolutely necessary to achieve the effect. A similar appearance in artworks has been called the Droste effect. Infinity mirrors are sometimes used as room accents or in artwork.[3]

In a classic self-contained infinity mirror, an array of incandescent bulbs, LEDs, or other point-source lights are placed around the perimeter of a fully reflective mirror, and a second, partially reflective, “one-way” mirror is placed a short distance in front of it, aligned parallel. When an outside observer looks into the surface of the partially reflecting mirror, the lights appear to disappear to infinity, giving the appearance of a tunnel of great depth lined with lights.[2]

If the mirrors are not exactly parallel, but slightly inclined, the “visual tunnel” is perceived as curved to the side because it retreats into infinity.

Alternatively, this effect can also be observed when a viewer stands between two parallel fully reflecting mirrors, as in some dressing rooms, some elevators, or a house of mirrors.[1] A weaker version of this effect can be observed when standing between any two parallel reflective surfaces, such as B. the glass walls of a small entrance lobby in some buildings. The 3D illusion mirror effect is created whenever there are two parallel reflective surfaces that can bounce a beam of light back and forth an infinite (theoretically infinite) number of times. The reflections appear to be distant because the light actually traverses the distance it appears to travel.

For example, in an infinity mirror two centimeters thick with the light sources in the center, the light from the source initially travels one centimeter. The first reflection travels one centimeter to the rearview mirror and then two centimeters to and through the front mirror, for a total of three centimeters. The second reflection travels two centimeters from the front mirror to the rear mirror, and again two centimeters from the rear mirror to and through the front mirror, a total of four centimeters, plus the first reflection (three centimeters), which places the second reflection seven centimeters from the front mirror. Each subsequent reflection adds four more centimeters to the total (the third reflection appears 11 centimeters deep, the fourth 15 centimeters, and so on).[1][4]

Each additional reflection lengthens the path that light must travel before exiting the mirror and reaching the viewer. Any reflection of light reduces the brightness of the image, which also fades in the distance.

Visual artists, particularly contemporary sculptors, have made use of infinity mirrors. Yayoi Kusama, Josiah McElheny, Ivan Navarro, Taylor Davis, Anthony James[5] and Guillaume Lachapelle[6] have all produced works that use the infinity mirror to expand the sense of unlimited space in their artworks.

Contemporary classical composer Arvo Pärt wrote his 1978 composition Spiegel im Spiegel (“Mirror in the Mirror”) as a musical reflection on the infinity mirror effect.
