But the different mood doesn’t mean that photos are less important. In fact, taking end-of-year photos at home is a surefire way to celebrate your kids’ milestones — whether they’re graduating high school or graduating from preschool — at a time when nothing feels normal.

How do you capture your grad’s best photos or replace those spring school pics that never came out? As a professional photographer who regularly photographs high school seniors and my own kids, I want to share a few tips to help non-photographers take better photos — even with a smartphone — of those end-of-school moments. These portrait photography tips work for shots in that cap and robe or prom dress, sports uniform, or concert costume that’s been relegated to the closet, but they also work with any type of portrait you want to take at home. regardless of the event.

When tipping photographers is not necessary:

There is often a photo booth at events such as birthday parties or weddings. There is usually an attendant who explains to people how the machine works. They also hand out props and the final photos once they are printed. Since the photo booth doesn’t do too much work when it comes to actually taking photos, tipping isn’t necessary. However, if you are the person renting the booth for an event, you should tip. Every once in a while, a photo booth can get a few bucks from a group of drunk people who want to take some pictures. It’s not required, but it never hurts to tip.

Professional headshots

If your professional headshots are taken by a photography company and not by freelance photographers, you don’t have to tip the company. Consider tipping only the photographer who took your picture. The rooms are really quite easy to photograph and not too many actual photos should be taken depending on the size of the house and grounds. For all these reasons and more, tipping for real estate photos is definitely not required.

The photographer often doesn’t have to spend time getting to know the person, and senior photos are usually pretty quick. Starting a portrait photography business is difficult! So I’ll share with you my method of how I started charging real money when I started working as a photographer.

The hurdle you have to overcome when loading money

The biggest hurdle to asking money as a new photographer is that you always want to get better first. You feel like you have to be perfect before you can ever charge for your photography services. It’s a tough hurdle to jump, but I always go back to the fact that YOU have talent and YOU have a gift. You are a gifted, gifted person who was born with a knack for photography – and so do the people you photograph. NOT. TO HAVE. You cannot take these pictures for yourself. You don’t have the equipment to take photos. You don’t have the knowledge. They don’t have the editing software, nor do they know anything about using it. They do NOT have all of these talents that THEY have. You literally can’t do what YOU can do.

Just by YOU photographing them, even if it’s not perfect, even if it’s not exactly what you want your photographic style and technical skills to be, you are still giving these people a great gift. Without YOU, they would have no photos to remember this time of their lives. I want you to remember this if you’re thinking about charging people for your photography services. They must remember, “This is something they cannot do for themselves, and they are asking ME to do it for them”.

When do I have to ask for money as a new photographer?

I know it can be hard for a new photographer to ask for money. Most new portrait photographers start by browsing the websites of other photographers in their area and comparing their own work to the work of those other photographers. You look up prices on other photographers’ websites to get an idea of ​​what to charge (trust me, I’ve done this a lot myself). But I want you to develop your own loading plan that you are comfortable with now.

I’m going to talk about how I started asking for money when I started my photography business because I think it’s good to see a real life example from a person who was right in yours a few years ago shoes.

When I started my photography business, I didn’t have a portfolio or pictures to prove what I could offer potential clients. I started by reaching out to my family and friends who I knew were at a stage in my life where I would like to photograph and asked if I could offer them a session. Each of these sessions that I personally reached out to people for, I offered for free because I just wanted to build my portfolio and gain experience and confidence in running a photo session.

My rule of thumb for myself and when to start charging as a new photographer was to have at least 1-2 free sessions per photography category (i.e. family, couples, newborn, etc.) services. For example, I wanted to make sure I had at least 1-2 couple sessions or 1-2 family sessions before deciding to start charging.

I remember when I hosted my first fall mini sessions I literally had TWO families photographed before booking two full day mini sessions with families I had never met and this was going to be my first time seeing them to photograph.

When I asked for money for my first newborn session, I had only done ONE free newborn session for a friend’s family member. But this one free session allowed me to have portfolio pictures to show my work and gave me enough experience and confidence to know I can do it.

How much do you charge when you first start?

This is a touchy subject with many experienced photographers. I know that experienced photographers who have been in the business for years can feel threatened when new photographers charge lower prices for a photo session. Or they might think you need a year of portfolio construction experience before you ever think about asking for money.

Friend, let me tell you straight! Keep your head in your own lane. Your clients that you get for your first paid sessions are NOT the ideal clients for this more experienced photographer. They are YOUR perfect clients because they asked YOU to be their photographer.

You won’t charge as much as an experienced photographer for a family shoot because you’re still gaining and growing a lot of experience and knowledge. But remember, you ARE MONEY because you’re giving that customer something they can’t do themselves.

For my very first session that I was paid for, I was charged $100. I chose this amount because I felt comfortable with $100 at the time.

You don’t have to select $100. You can choose any amount you want to start with. But I want to remind you that YOU. ARE. VALUE. IT! Even if you want to get better, you are still worth some money here and now. So don’t hold back and ask for something.

My method of increasing my prices for photo sessions

My rule of thumb for increasing prices was that for every 3-5 sessions booked at my current price, I would increase my price by $50. For example, I charged my first 3-5 families $100 each for their photo session. Then, when I received a request for another family session, I increased my price to $150. After booking 3-5 sessions at $150 I would increase my price to $200 for the next 3-5 sessions. I followed this pricing method until I reached a price point that made the most sense to me.

You can apply this method to any field of portrait photography: family photography, newborn photography, senior photography, couple photography, and wedding photography.

I know there are many opinions from other “experienced” photographers about how much to charge to start with. And I know that as a new photographer, we constantly worry about whether we are worthy and not enough: that you have to be perfect before you ask for money. And I want to tell you right now that YOU. ARE. WORTHY. They are! At the moment!

Now I’m not telling you to go out there and charge $350 for your first family session because I think you have a lot to learn and grow that never ends. I’m just asking you to realize that you have a gift and that you don’t have to be perfect and exactly where you think you need to be before you start charging clients for photo sessions. You can start charging people now. They are worth 100% of the money you get!
