So you just bought a piece of coconut mat. Maybe you’re replacing an old, tired looking mat that’s been there since you moved in, or maybe it’s a brand new floor area looking for an attractive floor mat to complete it. In any case, there’s a good chance you’ll need to trim your mat to fit. Luckily, cutting coir mats is easy.

To cut your coir mat, follow these simple steps;

Measure the area where you will attach the mat. Turn your new piece of coir mat upside down. Mark the measurements on the back of the mat

Step 1

Before doing anything else, it’s important to get accurate measurements of where you plan to place your coir mat. Make sure you take multiple measurements as porches and mat wells are often not as square as they look, so take a few measurements along the length of the area just to be sure.

Once you have an accurate set of measurements, turn the mat over so the PVC backing is facing you. Mark your measurements on the mat with a pen or other pen that leaves a visible mark.

Tip: Remember that if you are cutting an unusual shape, you will need to “flip” the measurements if you turn the mat right side out.

To cut the mat, you can either cut along with a metal ruler or mark a cutting line with the ruler. If you don’t have a metal ruler, use something that’s heavy and has a straight edge (we used a shelf in this picture!)

Now, with the line marked, carefully cut along the back of the mat. Although the mat will be at least 17mm thick you only need to cut through the PVC backing so it won’t be too difficult. Once you’ve cut the backing the full length of the mat, gently pull the two pieces apart (you may need to cut the knife a few more times to sever the tangled coir).

Tip: Even if you’re just cutting through the backing, be careful not to work on a surface that can easily be damaged if the knife cuts all the way through.

Place your mat in its new home. Hopefully it will fit perfectly, but if not you can trim the edges as needed.

And that’s it! Your new coconut mat is assembled and ready to use. You can use a few dots of glue on the back if you want, but in most cases this is not necessary.

Tip: As a natural material, coir tends to shed some fibers when new. After attaching the mat, vacuum the surface to remove most of the loose fibers.

We’ve put together a few ideas on how to help keep your coir mat from falling off to give it the longest possible life and to offset some of the downsides of using coir as an entrance mat.

It is important to note that some shedding is always normal with any coir mat, especially during the first 2 weeks of purchase and use.

Luxury/commercial grade coir

Coconut mats have different “qualities”. The higher the quality of coir, the more densely packed the bristles mean the amount of shedding is reduced. You should therefore look out for “commercial grade” or “heavy duty” coir mats when purchasing low shedding coir mats.

Budget quality coir is much more prone to shedding and is generally chosen when cost is the primary concern.

Install coco in a pit/well

When coir is laid in an alcove it is much less likely to fall heavily onto the surrounding floors than when the mat is laid loose. This is because the edges of the mat are trapped in the recess, so bristles only fall off the mat’s tread instead of the edges too!

The mat height should be flush with the height of the shaft/niche in order to avoid spilling as much as possible and also to avoid trip hazards.

Regular vacuuming

Coir mats need to be vacuumed regularly, especially for the first few weeks, to prevent loose bristles from being carried from the mat’s surface to the surrounding floors and carpets.

Highly Effective What we don’t like Coir coir is widely recognized as one of the best and most durable doormat materials. As a result, it is widely recommended for cold, wet seasons like winter. Our tester liked this option and got a perfect 5 in durability and effectiveness – two things that are essential for an all-season option. But it also deserves full marks in terms of design. If there’s a downside, it tends to lose a little (but that’s pretty normal with coco mats as a whole). If you can get over that, you should appreciate that this doormat isn’t too thick or too thin – it’s just the right size for standard doors. It also has the perfect texture for removing dirt and debris and removing excess wetness or mud from shoes before anyone enters your home.

Very Expensive In person, this hand tufted rug is even more beautiful than it looks. It’s like a true work of art – one that is reluctant to ruin with dirty shoes! Still, a doormat is a doormat, and this indoor/outdoor option gets the job done. While beautiful, it has a non-slip polyester latex backing that will keep it securely in place no matter how hard you rub your shoes on it. The polyester-acrylic blend doormat is expensive. And although it cleans shoes well, dirt and debris are really visible. Because of that combination, it’s probably best suited to a low-traffic area that’s largely covered – like a side porch or behind the back door – as a second landing spot (after the sturdier outdoor option). Non-absorbent The Letterfolk Tile Mat is a real standout, not only because of the attractive black and white colorway (it comes in over two dozen other colors too!), but also because it’s customizable. The doormat comes with additional “tiles” that you can swap out to create your own personal color pattern or even write a word. However, this mat is a little lacking in effectiveness – our tester found that while it did remove dirt from shoes, the glossy texture made it difficult to adequately dry the mud and wet. In fact, the mat even got a bit slippery when wet. That means it’s super easy to wipe clean, so you can dry it in no time.

Vastu-compliant main doors are built in the east, north, northeast, or west direction. A green or earth-toned doormat works well for an east-facing main door. Darker shades of blue floor mats should be placed near northbound doors. For a west-facing home, use light shades like white or tan for floor mats.

Tips to keep your entrance mats shiny

1 – washing machine

When it comes to washable mats, there are two options. The first is machine washing in a domestic or commercial washing machine and the second is hosing down and drying, the latter being the most practical, easiest and not to mention the cheapest option.

To find out if your entrance mat is washable, we always recommend checking with your mat supplier or consulting the cleaning instructions, a – whether the item is washable and b – the weight of the product.

2 – wet and dry vacuum cleaners

Based on tip 1, always ask your supplier whether the product is washable. This option may be more geared towards commercial and industrial locations as this type of cleaner is not often readily available, but by all means if you have one at home, use it! Most have a powerful motor that picks up and collects most of the hidden dirt and trapped debris. They then wet and dry the carpet pile to leave it clean.

3 – Carpet Cleaner

Again, this can be a product that most local businesses and even some households have. The carpet cleaner provides a deep cleaning and suction of dirt. Similar to the wet and dry vacuum in Tip 2, the carpet cleaner offers excellent wet pickup and then dries your mats, ideal for indoor entrance mats.

Daily vacuuming is ideal for maintaining your mats and may be long term for areas with low to medium foot traffic. However, for areas with heavy foot traffic, you will eventually need to do a more thorough cleaning, which is discussed in Tips 1, 2, and 3.

5 – Wash or wipe damp cloth

This tip works best for rubber mats, especially those placed in kitchens and bars. For daily cleaning, simply wipe or damp wipe the mats at the same time. Again, check with your supplier as to what chemicals can be used and that they will not damage or degrade the rubber. Alternatively, as Tip 1 shows, you can simply take the items outside and hose down and hang to dry, which is similar to the damp cloth/mop.

6 – Shake out the mat

This tip is geared toward general day-to-day maintenance and works well in areas with light foot traffic. It pairs well with Tip 4 so after shaking a quick vacuum will give carpet mats a refresh and make the pile fuller and fuller. When shaking out your mat, take it well away from your entryway and give it a good shake on grass or other areas that won’t leave trapped dirt on the ground outside of your building.

Cleaning entrance mats for houses

Household entrance mats could be tucked into your washing machine, but if the weight is not properly checked and the mat is too heavy, it could damage your washing machine, especially if it’s a runner mat with exceptionally long dimensions!

A popular home mat that you can easily wash is doormats. Dirt Trapper mats are made from a cotton rich pile with a rubber backing.

How do I wash a dirt control mat?

Entrance mats can be either hand or machine washed at up to 30°C using a colour-safe, non-organic detergent without bleach/optical brighteners as this will help preserve the color of the mat. Please do not add fabric softener or use washing liquids/capsules/powders with added fabric softener as this will reduce the absorbency of the cotton pile of the mat. We recommend that you wash your entrance mats regularly to improve your mat’s absorbency. When washing, check your machine’s filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions and also check the load limit of your machine, as large floor mats can be heavy when wet. Dirt trapper mats are super absorbent and in some cases you may need to double spin your mat. If you have a large drum machine, you may need to reposition your mat to rotate effectively.

Why do you recommend washing my entrance mats before use?

All mats have already been washed once before reaching you but would benefit from a second wash to lift the pile. As with many cotton pile products (e.g. towels), absorbency is enhanced when the product is completely free of any yarn “dressing”.

How thick is a dirt control mat?

A doormat is 7mm (1/4 inch) thick – if you can fit your pinky in the gap between the door and the floor, your doormat should fit easily.

Can I cut my entrance mat?

You can trim your mat, however we cannot accept responsibility for any incidents that occur as a result of trimming or trimming the mat and consequently you will void your warranty.

Are entrance mats recommended for use on specialty floors?

The rubber backing of our basic entrance mats can be used on both hard floors and carpets, while the latex backing of our design entrance mats can only be used on hard floors. However, for special floor coverings such as laminate flooring, Karndean flooring, etc., please consult the manufacturer before using latex or rubber backed mats. We cannot accept liability for damage to the floor covering.
