Realistic drama about urban crime is not for kids.

Bloody, explicit, gratuitous violence. They’re saying the F-word every second and I mean EVERY SECOND, so it’s starting to sound really stupid and over the top. The drama, the spectacle, the suspense and the thrill is there, the acting is good, the filming is good but it’s depressing and you know something really awful is going to happen at any moment in every episode. There are lengthy scenes of heads being beaten to death and people being stabbed multiple times. There’s a glamorization here in that it’s still dramatic, exciting and televised, even though it probably corresponds to what’s actually happening. I’m just not sure if it goes very deep into why or how everyone really thinks about how awful this all is. It’s like East Enders on crack cocaine. So if you thought EE was depressing and full of sensational drama and horrible people, x100 is it. My main concern is concern about the impact it is having on youth and how all this swear language spoken by youth and needless violence is having a negative impact on our children.

After last hitting our screens in 2019 when the thought of a global pandemic seemed impossible, Top Boy has finally returned to Netflix for its latest installment.

However, there has been some confusion surrounding the show’s return, particularly among new fans who have been greeted with two shows on Netflix, Top Boy and Top Boy: Summerhouse.

But which of the Top Boy shows came first, and how should fans watch to set the story straight?

The difference between Top Boy and Summerhouse

Top Boy began its career in 2011 on Channel 4 in the UK, telling the stories of Dushane Hill and Gerald “Sully” Sullivan, who detailed their criminal exploits on the fictional Summerhouse estate.

However, when Channel 4 canceled Top Boy in 2013 after just two seasons, their story seemed over.

That was until Netflix revived the Top Boy series in 2019, breathing new life into it with the help of rapper Drake, who now serves as a producer.

The Netflix revival picks up the story of Dushane and Sully a few years later, but still serves as a sequel to the original Top Boy series.

But when Netflix revived Top Boy, the two original series that aired on Channel 4 were renamed Top Boy: Summerhouse and are technically classified as separate shows on Netflix.

In addition to season 2 of Netflix’s Top Boy, a third and final season has been announced, which is set to begin filming in summer 2022.

Top Boy is back on our screens as the Summerhouse road workers prepare their food for another round of the hit Netflix show – and there’s a connection to Ireland that may have gone unnoticed.

Show creator – screenwriter and novelist Ronan Bennett explained how the show’s foundations lay in his own Belfast roots.

Living abroad does strange things to one’s identity – one can feel farther and closer to home than ever before. He explains how his relationship to nationality and place has changed over the decades he has spent outside the North.

READ MORE: The real age and style of Netflix top boy cast as road driver and wife looks vastly different

Bennett lives in Hackney with his two children but retains the softly spoken Belfast accent of his youth.

“I have spent more than two thirds of my life outside of Ireland. It stays central. I follow the news there, north and south. It’s crucial to identity.

“I don’t want to be one of those expatriates who’ve been away so long that they become foggy, nostalgic, and romantic. I have no use for that.

“But I think about it a lot, read about it a lot and talk to friends there.”

Relations with the island on both sides of the border remain strong between Bennett’s junior, Molly and Finn. Both have Irish passports, the former is studying at Trinity College.

He realizes that all writing projects – Top Boy as well as his other works – must be influenced by his time in Belfast and Ireland.

“What you absorbed in your formative years is absolutely critical to the way you think about the world and it is critical to the things that interest you.

“The creator of Bridgerton, for example, has his thing that they’re interested in. It’s not my thing – and I’m not criticizing it at all – but we all have our own stuff.

“That ‘thing’ certainly stems from the experiences of our formative years — the things that really stick in our minds and never go away.”

Bennett’s formative years provided a clear template for recognizing injustice and not standing idly by. That comes out in his work.

Less of a judgmental treatise, Top Boy is a multi-faceted portrayal of a world where characters’ problems are similar but unique. The viewer begs for intervention in young lives whose promises end on an ever darker path.

It was a very specific incident—observing a boy dealing drugs outside his local supermarket—that prompted Bennett to connect with community leaders like Gerry Jackson to learn more about life on the streets.

These conversations led to the “roadmen” interviews that formed the basis of the series.

This is the product of a writer whose gaze would remain spellbound when others would have preferred to look the other way or not at all.

‘When I saw this kid in front of the supermarket selling drugs – I didn’t just see a kid selling drugs, what I saw was a world, a context neighbors living?’

“But you have to have the curiosity to want to explore it further, otherwise you just walk by. Another writer picks something else he sees down the road.”

Many shows lean too heavily into the grit, which can turn off viewers who often seek escapism alongside their entertainment. It’s also a fun show with cut lines throughout – something that should be familiar to a Northern Irish audience.

“There’s a kind of black humor in the north that I’m happy to go back to and do a refresher course on.

“A few years ago I was sitting in a bar on Shipquay Street in Derry. It was a busy bar and there was a young couple in there. The guy kept turning to the girl and saying, ‘Have you been faithful? In the course of the hour he must have asked her three times.

“After about an hour, she puts her glass down and says, ‘You’ve been in jail!’ – and he said: “Yes, for three months!”

“It’s stuck in my mind as the quintessential Derry exchange.”

Since it first left his pen well over a decade ago, the series has had its ups and downs.

Originally rejected by the BBC, it was picked up by Channel 4 for the first two series (now known as Top Boy: Summerhouse) – cancellation there allowing for a Netflix revival.

It was fueled by an unlikely conversational partner — hip-hop superstar Drake — who wanted to come on board and reach out to Netflix.

“[It was nice to] get a call and say to my two kids, ‘I have to go and meet someone named Drake.

“He’s a very nice man. I only met him six or seven times in total, but he was always very humble and approachable. The young cast absolutely love him and he was very good with them – he made time for them.

“I wasn’t sure at all who I was going to meet for the first time. I’m sure he’s a bit amused that I’ve never heard of him!”

With neither man under any illusions or prejudice towards the other, things were set for the start of a professional relationship that has taken Top Boy to a new level in this Netflix iteration.

Avid viewers of the four series will not only notice a higher production finish on the newer series, but also a very significant improvement in the soundtrack.

While Bennett is happy to explain that the show’s success has “dozens” of dads – not least the actors – it seems Drake may deserve some credit in his field.

“He and his manager Future were no big animals. They just told us, ‘We want to add fuel to your fire.

The length of the project has meant that life’s ups and downs have crossed along the way, giving it a special meaning to Bennett.

Most notably, the loss of his wife and children’s mother, Georgina, in 2014 shook the family the way things do.

He did a pretty good job of turning the loss of a family into a poignant win for the viewer.

“The scene with the brothers in Netflix season 1 [Jamie’s family] is on a park bench – it was filmed in Victoria Park, just a stone’s throw from where I live.

“My wife had just given birth to our daughter, Molly, in 2001. We went to the park. It was a beautiful day and Molly was only a few hours old. Georgina was very strong and resilient, she was on her feet and beside herself in the hospital bed almost immediately.

“It was an amazing day. We went there with our son Finn and daughter and it was just great.

“When Georgina died 13 years later I remembered that event and I took the children there on her birthday and we celebrated her birthday. We sat on the same bench and talked about her.

“When I came up with the idea of Jamie being orphaned and taking care of his two brothers – you have to dramatize that.

“A screenwriter never likes it when characters just sit and talk. What you want to do is wear it out there. Create some drama. So I’ll take her to this park and say hello to her mother.”

The Irish influences can be expected to linger into the final season, he explains.

“The line ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ was very strong in my head as I thought about Top Boy and how I continue to think about it.

“I come from a community that has been demonized – the Irish nationalist community up north. She has been demonized. She was disfellowshipped. There was discrimination.

“When I came to London you look around and you see these people – the black and brown community – are treated equally as objects of suspicion. They were ‘different’, they were different.

“It took me two minutes to make this comparison.

“At the premiere we had for this season of ‘Top Boy,’ I was on stage introducing the films and I said exactly that.

“I also quoted Phil Lynott with his ‘More Blacks, More Irish, More Dogs’ t-shirt and everyone there got that.”

The ‘Top Boy’ Cast: Who’s Who?

1.Ashley Walters as Dushane Hill

As drug lord and in charge of the Summerhouse crew, Dushane had been on the show since the very first episode aired on Channel 4 and reprized his role when Netflix picked up the makeover. He is played by 39-year-old British actress Ashley Walters, who you may know from a range of British dramas including Doctor Who, Hustle, Silent Witness and the Sky series Bulletproof.

2. Kane Robinson (Kano) as Gerald “Sully” Sullivan

Sully is Dushane’s best friend and business partner. They’ve been there for each other since the beginning and have always worked together to run their drug empire. However, as fans have seen over the last season, their relationship is strained and there may be no turning back. Sully is played by Kane Robinson, better known as Kano, his stage name. Besides acting, he is best known as a rapper, songwriter and grime artist.

3.Michael Ward as Jamie Tovell

Jamie was introduced in the first season of Netflix’s Top Boy as the new kid running things on Dushane and Sully’s lawn. He had his own crew and rivaled his elders – although it wasn’t long before Dushane made sure he had him in his bag, which we’ll see more of in season two. Jamie is played by Micheal Ward, whose role on the show made him a breakout star. He appeared in Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed Small Axe: Lovers Rock and the 2019 film Blue Story.

4. Jasmine Jobson as Jaq

Jaq is a key member of Dushane’s Summerhouse crew and quickly becomes his right-hand man, especially when he drifts away from Sully. She is a drug dealer and incredibly loyal to those close to her. Season two will show her a more vulnerable side as she gains a love interest and ditches her tough exterior a little more than we’re used to. She is played by Jasmine Jobson, who was BAFTA nominated for her work on season one of Top Boy and also starred in the TV series Dark Heart and the 2020 thriller Surge.

5. Simbiatu “Little Simz” Ajikawo as Shelley

Shelley is Dushane’s love interest who was introduced to us in the first season of the Netflix drama when the two fall in love. Season two delves deeper into her past, giving us a better idea of who she is and where she’s from. Shelley is played by British rapper Little Simz, who made her acting debut on the E4 series Youngers.

6. Araloyin Oshunremi as Stefan Tovell

Stefan is Jamie’s youngest brother. In the first season, his best friend Ats got caught up while working with Jaq and Dushane and was eventually forced to set Jamie up, leading to his arrest. Naturally, this led to a rift between the two friends, which will be explored further in season two. Stefan is played by Araloyin Oshunremi. Top Boy is the young actor’s first role.

7. Hope Ikpoku Jr as Aaron Tovell

Aaron is Jamie’s middle brother and the second oldest in the family. Unlike his brother, he has avoided life on the streets and is concentrating on his education as a university student. He is played by Hope Ikpoku Jr., who appeared alongside Top Boy co-stars Michael Ward on Blue Story and Ashley Walters on the Sky series Bulletproof.

8. Lisa Dwan as Lizzie

In the first season, Lizzie was Jamie’s delivery man and the two also slept together. However, towards the end of the season, she switched allegiances and is now working with Dushane. She is played by Lisa Dwan, who recently appeared in the James Nesbitt series Bloodlands but is best known for her work on stage.

9. Adwoa Aboah as Becks

British model Adwoa Aboah is the newest member of the cast of Netflix season 2 of Top Boy. She will be playing a new character, Becks. Speaking to Dazed (opens in new tab) about her first TV role, Adwoa said of her on-screen alter ego, “I joined the cast as Becks, Jaq’s love interest … Becks isn’t from Jaq’s world at all but her.” is a Londoner. She’s street smart and a little bit bougie. She’s also confident and stands up for what she believes in and really connects with Jaq on an emotional level.”

Jasmine Jobson (born 9 May 1995) is an English actress, best known for her role as Jaq in Netflix’s 2019 British crime series Top Boy, for which she was BAFTA nominated, and for her role as Lily in the feature film Surge, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Early life[edit]

Jasmine Jobson was born on May 9, 1995[1][2] in Hayes, West London, England. Her mother is of Irish and Greek Cypriot descent, her father is Jamaican.[3] From an early age (around 6) Jobson showed talent for singing by imitating TV stars, so her mother enrolled her in ‘Paddington Arts’,[3] a youth arts organization dedicated to developing talent and creativity in London’s young people ,[4] where Jobson honed her talents.[3] As a child, Jobson had asked to be separated from her mother by social services and placed in foster care, and lived in West Drayton for five years.[3] The results caught on. In adulthood, however, Jobson taught herself how to channel that aggression and emotion into her acting.[5] When the casting director asked Top Boy to show some anger at her audition, Jobson threw a chair across the room and nearly crashed into a window, securing her the role in the production.[6]

Jobson joined the Big House Theatre[5] which offers theatre-based workshops and training on team building, challenge management and confidence building, and focuses on helping young people who have come through the UK care system.[7] Maggie Norris, CEO of Big House, described Jobson as an exceptional talent.[5]

Career [edit]

Jobson began her acting career in theater, appearing in plays such as Phoenix: A Girl on Fire and Wild Diamonds[8] at Hackney Down Studios in 2013.[9] Beginning in 2014, Jobson appeared in several short films Flea, A Generation of Vipers and The King before making his television debut in 2016 as Kia Hopkins in a single episode of Suspects (TV Series). [8] She has since had minor appearances in The Break (TV series), Five by Five and Dark Heart (TV series) as Sally Watkins,[8] before landing a starring role in the 2019 Netflix British crime drama series Top Boy . [10] In 2019, Jobson was nominated for and won Best Emerging Talent at the Movie and Video Awards (MVISA).[11][12]

In 2020, Jobson starred as Lily in the feature film Surge, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City in January 2020. [13] Jobson pretended to be comfortable in an airport setting, the setting for Surge, as she once worked as a bartender at the Wetherspoons at Heathrow’s Terminal 2.[6]

In 2020, Jobson was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.
