The findings appear in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

“Because evolution is entirely dependent on individual reproductive success, everything related to reproduction, such as mate choice, should be optimized through natural selection,” said study author William D. Lassek, a researcher at the University of California’s Department of Anthropology California in Santa Barbara.

“Understanding the reasons why men find certain women attractive should help us better understand human evolution. The two items that have been the subject of most research are waist-to-hip ratios (WHRs) and body mass indices (BMIs) of women.”

In a study published last year in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, Lassek and his colleagues found no evidence that low WHRs and low BMIs are associated with higher fertility in women.

For their new study, the researchers analyzed data from more than 12,000 women participants in two National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, a series of studies evaluating the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States.

WHRs tended to be smallest in age of both adult size and sexual maturity. In other words, women with low WHRs tended to have long reproductive lives ahead of them.

The researchers also found that younger women with lower waist-to-stature ratios tended to have higher levels of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in their stored fat, an important nutrient during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

“For the past 30 years, the commonly accepted explanation for male preferences has been that they look for signs of health and fertility, but we have shown that the very small waist sizes and low BMIs associated with attractiveness in well-nourished women Not doing so indicates better health or fertility,” Lassek told PsyPost.

“What they show is that a woman is likely to be young (15-19), has never been pregnant, and has maximum stores of brain-building fatty acids. In groups where women eat less and are heavier in their teens, men prefer the higher BMIs that indicate youth. Men’s preference for younger women probably won’t surprise most women.”

“Highly attractive women tend to be 2 to 4 inches taller than average. We’re working to understand why. We also believe that young women with attractive WHRs and BMIs are better able to survive a first pregnancy when modern obstetrics are not available,” added Lassek.

The study “Evidence support nubility and reproductive value as the key to human female Physical Attraction” was authored by William D. Lassek and Steven J.C. Gaulin.

The lesson: When you or someone else asks the question, “Do I look fat,” don’t answer with a “yes” or “no.” Instead, consider what they are really asking, reframe the question, and put it back in their hands.

1. Appearance. In the dressing room, she might actually ask, “Does this dress look good?” So try not to get caught up in the word “fat.” “Fat” is an extremely charged word that can affect people emotionally on so many levels. A better way to respond would be, “That outfit really suits you.” Or, “The other dress is more flattering.” Even better: “How do you feel in this outfit?” If she tries to push you back to the original question, stick with this strategy. Sometimes it’s unconscious. Men and women automatically say this phrase without really thinking.

2. Reassurance. Let’s look beyond the situation in the dressing room. Now imagine your spouse or child asking, “Do I look fat?” Sometimes the question comes out of the blue and doesn’t relate to clothing. Often they are looking for something completely different. It’s looking for validation. Essentially, your loved one is asking, “Do you think I’m okay?” Or fill in the blank with another word that fits, such as attractive, adorable, awesome, etc. Her response: “Are you asking what I mean to you.” feel? I think you’re awesome.” If you have solid self-esteem, you can usually overcome self-doubt on your own. If you don’t, you often need a little help. Consider whether this person could benefit from more verbal feedback and validation from you in general.

3. Healthy weight? Yet another version actually asks, “Is my weight unhealthy?” It’s understandable why he or she might seek a different opinion. There are so many confusing messages about what a healthy weight is. A fashion magazine may make you feel overweight, but you may be the thinnest person in your family. If you think that’s really behind the fat question, rephrase it: “Are you worried that you’re overweight?” Consult a doctor. “You may want to consult your doctor. The doctor can help determine a healthy weight for you.”

4. Self-Esteem. What if you keep asking, “Do I look fat?” Again, this is a warning sign that you may be asking for validation, not validation of your appearance. Remember, your significant other can tell you you look great until they’re blue in the face, but really, only you can make those words stick. If you don’t really believe it yourself, it doesn’t matter what other people say.

5. Feelings. Finally, imagine someone with body image issues or an eating disorder asking if they look fat. This is often a sign of fear. Getting into a debate about “fat” is completely off the mark. In this case, try “If you ask me, it tells me you’re worried about something. What’s going on?” There could be concerns about appearances. But often it’s about feeling something uncomfortable, like feeling too full, overwhelmed, or stressed. Focus on the feeling.

The Lesson: When you or someone else asks the question, “Do I look fat?” don’t answer “yes” or “no.” Instead, think about what they’re really asking, rephrase the question, and put it back in their hands. Most often, it signals a need for reassurance. Let’s stop using the word “bold” to express things that can be expressed more clearly and accurately in other ways.

It sounds like your boyfriend has been struggling with his body image and self-esteem for a while and that he was in a relationship with a previous girlfriend who told him to go on a diet, most likely reflecting his insecurity about it how he looks and feels has triggered or aggravated himself. People with low self-esteem often have a thwarted sense of reality. Your boyfriend seems so focused on his appearance that his constant self-criticism hurts him and probably the people who care about him even more.

You want to know how to react to your boyfriend when he becomes self-critical. Focus on telling him why you like him the way he is, including that you like his body. For example, if he says something like, “I’m so fat, I feel like a beached whale,” you can reply, “You’re not a beached whale, you’re my friend and I think you’re amazing just the way you are.” Or if he’s making comments about himself in terms of clothing or being out of shape, for example, you might be able to steer the conversation away from “fat” and toward fitness, strength, and/or energy. He might say, “I like it.” You can respond with something like, “Your clothes should fit you, not the other way around. Plus, I love how strong and sexy you look in jeans.”

However, be careful not to make it your responsibility to change your friend’s self-esteem. You can remind him of the reasons you’re with him and tell him that you find him attractive, but don’t try to control or change his attitudes and behaviors. That means he has to be comfortable with his body first before the bold comments can let up. Also, be aware of any comments or judgments you make in his presence about yourself or others’ behavior, as they may affect how seriously he takes your self-affirmations.

If these suggested answers are ineffective, you may need to respond with “tough love” and say something like, “I love you, and you know it upsets me to hear you keep talking about it. I don’t know what else to say. You have to deal with it and learn to accept yourself. You are worth so much more to me and others than your looks.”
