After analyzing thousands of homes across the UK, the team found that more properties are choosing gray to add curb appeal – and it’s paying off.

It may be one of the most popular interior colors, but it’s also making its way outside the home. Gray windows compared to their white windows increased house prices by an average £70,000 in the South, compared to an increase of just £37,000 in the North. In the meantime, new buildings are also using the gray window trend to win new customers.

So which shades of gray are proving popular? Anthracite grey, especially when chosen in flush casement windows, is one of the most popular shades. Meanwhile, agate grey, which has hints of green, has seen a real surge in popularity for sash windows thanks to the rising trend in historic building renovations, Genesis Collection reveals.

“We’ve seen a 16 percent increase in demand for gray windows over the past year, so we’re not surprised that this modern addition can add real value to a home,” said Marcus O’Boyle, director of sales and marketing at Genesis Collection .

“We expect the popularity of this shade to continue to grow, so expect even more window variations in a huge range of shades of gray to appear in homes across the country.”

For years, we’re talking at least a hundred years, the standard window color that everyone had was white. If you’re walking down your street I’d pay money for every window to be white as that’s the norm.

So why is there this sudden upsurge in charcoal gray windows?

The main reason now is so simple that people want to stand out. Anthracite gray is a neutral color that pairs well with a variety of brick colors, as does white. Coupled with the big boom in double-skinned PVC, this means windows can be gray on the outside and white on the inside. This means you don’t have to worry about what color to decorate your rooms with.

Those are very simple reasons, but is there another reason for the anthracite gray boom?

Well, there is a theory related to the increasing popularity of aluminum doors. More and more people are installing folding doors or sliding doors at the back of their house or aluminum front doors instead of their composite or PVC front doors. This is mainly due to the increased security and more modern look that aluminum doors offer us.

But aluminum windows still don’t take off to the same extent. This could be mainly due to a cost issue – a good quality aluminum window has traditionally cost a lot more than PVC and yet they can’t offer your home nearly the same level of thermal protection.

How do you avoid the problem of cost and thermal efficiency? Put in a PVC window that’s the same color as the aluminum and you’re on the winning side. Anthracite gray in particular, with its dark tones, helps to blend the materials together, so you often can’t tell that one is aluminum and one is PVC.

This means you get the thermal efficiency of PVC with the great modern look to match the aluminum doors. In addition, the costs are significantly lower.

Do colored plastic windows fade? Colored UPVC windows will fade, but how much depends on how they were made.

If you have colored UPVC windows and are concerned about this, you can have them spray painted to protect the surface underneath.

Older colored UPVC windows (those made more than ten years ago) were mostly made of white UPVC with a few millimeters of colored plastic on the surface. It’s these windows that fade quickly because the top plastic layer is stretchable when exposed to UV rays.

Newer colored plastic windows are usually solid, which means that the color penetrates through the plastic. This solid color makes the windows very resistant to fading. However, because they are colored, there will still be noticeable fading over a 15-30 year period regardless of their durability.
