Want to Know How Long a Fidget Spinner Spins? Get a Laser and Some Physics

Fidget spinners are the new Rubik’s Cube. Or maybe the new Tamagotchi. Or…I don’t know. Choose your fad. You see these toys, ostensibly designed to help children focus fidgets, everywhere now. Serious. Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere. A fidget spinner is basically a small bearing mounted in a piece of plastic or other material. You hold it and turn it. I think it’s kind of amusing.

Now to my question: how much longer will it spin? This of course depends on the initial angular velocity. Now to find angular velocity… oh wait. Perhaps I should discuss basic rotational kinematics first. Suppose I have some rotating object. Like a bicycle wheel for example. I can determine the angular position at any point. I will call this θ.

How fast does a fidget spinner spin? – Damien Kee

In this tutorial I will show you how to use the data logging features of LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 to measure how fast a fidget spinner is spinning.

I use a color sensor in reflected light mode positioned over one of the spinner’s lobes. Pointing the sensor directly at the table will give a strong reflected light reading. However, when one of the spinner’s lobes passes under the color sensor, the reflected light readings change. By measuring the time between each lobe passing the sensor (and considering that there are three lobes), the spinner RPM can be calculated.

I set the experiment to run for 10 seconds and take 1000 samples per second. The spinner is moving pretty fast, so we want to collect as much data as possible.

After running the experiment, we upload the data and get the following:

If we zoom in on the data, we can clearly see the spinner’s lobes as they pass under the color sensor.

The first part is before we get the spinner spinning. By zooming in on some data, we can clearly see how the spinner reflects different amounts of light depending on what’s directly under the color sensor. I was surprised how clearly you can see the different parts of the spinner. You can clearly see the silver parts of the bearing sandwiched between the black molded plastic.

By measuring the time between any two common positions on the chart, you can calculate how fast a lobe of the spinner will pass. Considering that my spinner has 3 lobes, you can calculate the RPM of the spinner at different times.

Using the analysis tool, we can measure how long it takes the spinner to spin. You’ll notice that I took the first “high” part of the chart where the spinner sees the white table, and then again the fourth “high” part. This is because there are 3 lobes of the spinner.

You can see that the beginning of my segment crosses the x-axis at 2.16 seconds and ends at 2.30 seconds. This gives a time of 0.14 seconds per revolution.

To convert to revolutions per minute (rpm), divide 60 by the time it takes for 1 revolution. 60/ 0.14 = 428 rpm.

I calculated the speed at the start and again about 8 seconds after it started spinning. My spinner went from 428 rpm to 215 rpm during this time.

This would be a great experiment in class as it would be possible to see the relative slowdown between different types of spinners.
