Nobody likes to see a candle burn out, but it’s always hard to see the leftover wax unused and untouched at the bottom of the candle. There is still fragrance in the unburned part, your candle wick just doesn’t seem to reach down far enough to fully burn the candle. How are you? Do you throw out the candle and open a new one, or do you reuse and reuse the perfect candle wax?

Reusing candle wax is incredibly easy. Here’s what to do with leftover candle wax!

Make a new candle

This is the most intuitive application for old candle wax and actually quite simple. Just save your old candle jars and buy a roll of candle wick at your local hobby store. Candle wick rolls are inexpensive and durable. You can easily melt the wax by placing the old candle on the lowest heat setting possible. Let all the wax melt, then pour into a separate container. You can keep adding new colors or old leftovers into the same container. Once your container is full or has reached the desired level, place it on the stovetop and melt again. When the wax has melted, simply insert the candle wick, allow the wax to set and you have a brand new candle!

Simple tea lights

Another easy thing you can do with leftover candle wax is turn them into small tea lights. If you have tea lights that have burned out, simply store the containers in a drawer. Follow the steps above to melt the leftover wax, pour into your empty tealight holder and add a small piece of wick. There is usually enough wax left at the bottom of a larger candle to make an entire tealight. So if you have the tea light holders on hand, you can simply reuse the old wax.

This is one of my absolute favorite uses for leftover candle wax. If you have a wood burning fireplace or stove in your home, you can turn old wax into amazing fire starters. There are two different ways to make these fire starters:

Using store-bought cotton rounds

Buy a bag of plain cotton rounds. The cotton pads you use to clean your face are perfect.

Melt the wax on your stovetop over low heat, then gently dip the cotton pads into the wax. Leave a portion (about 1/4) of the pad free of wax. I just hold the end of the pad and dip, leaving the area I’m holding free of wax.

Let them dry and you now have a fire starter.

To use, simply light the unwaxed cotton end and release. The wax prevents the cotton from burning quickly so you have a flame that lasts and lasts.

Take an old egg carton (this needs to be cardboard, not plastic/foam) and fill every spot in the carton with dryer lint. Simply compact your dryer lint into small balls and squeeze them into the crate.

Melt your wax and pour a thin layer of wax over each ball of lint. Just enough wax to cover the top of the fluff.

To use these firelighters, cut out each cardboard cup to make an individual firelighter. So a dozen egg cartons make 12 appetizers. Light the egg carton portion of the appetizer and you’re done. If you don’t have a cardboard egg carton, you can use anything round to cover fluff with wax. Then just light the fluff and the wax will keep it burning.

You may have heard that many of the mainstream candles you’ve come to love aren’t that good for you. Depending on the wax base and the ingredients added, this may be the case. For example, many people are unaware of the chemicals in paraffin-based wax and the potentially toxic health effects that can occur if you inhale them.

Today we will provide clarity on what paraffin wax is, the burning question “Is paraffin poison toxic?” -Good-for-you scents.

Is paraffin wax toxic?

Paraffin wax is commonly used to make candles and wax melts because it’s generally cheaper to make than soy wax. Because paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil, it has been found to contain known carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) such as benzene. CNN reports that researchers at South Carolina State University have found that melting paraffin wax-based candles release toxic toluene and benzene, while soy candles and wax did not.

Toluene is a colorless, water-insoluble liquid that occurs naturally in crude oil. It is released from gasoline fumes, vehicle exhaust and cigarette smoke. Toluene is used as a solvent in the manufacture of paint products, nail polish, varnish, glue and adhesives. Benzene is also a colorless liquid derived from natural gas and crude oil that is used as a solvent.

Paraffin wax is the nasty by-product of gas and oil refineries with potentially serious consequences. Researchers from South Carolina State University found that two harmful chemicals, toluene and benzene, are released into the air when paraffin wax-based candles are melted.

The Centers for Disease Control conducted a study that found that chronic toluene exposure to less than 200 parts per million (ppm) was associated with headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Workers repeatedly exposed to 200 to 500 ppm reported loss of coordination, memory and appetite.
