Best eyeshadows for dark skin: 5 picks from creamy mattes to flawless shimmers

We know – finding the perfect match for your pout can be an uphill battle, especially when you’re also keeping your skin tone in mind. Here’s the thing about lippies: there are plenty of them, but not all produce beautiful results on a wide range of skin tones. It’ll take a whole lot of bathroom talking with your girlfriends and maybe trial and error before you can only hope that your ultimate choice is a keeper. Dark beauties, we’re here to make it easy for you though.

We mean it when we say this: the world is your oyster when it comes to puckering your pout. All you have to do is this: go for shades that beautifully bring out the warm, golden tones of your luscious complexion. To save you the guesswork, we’ve done our homework to guide you on fail-safe lipstick colors for dark skin.

Choosing Lipstick Colors for Dark Skin First, get to know your skin tone. It’s the subtle natural tone beneath your skin that determines whether you’re warm, neutral, or cool in color. What makes you think that? If the color of the veins on your wrist is blue, it means cool and if it’s green, it means warm. If you are confused between the two, or have both, then you are probably neutral. While warm undertones mean a lighter skin tone, cool undertones mean a dusky skin tone. If you have cool undertones, opt for pinks, deeper berry tones, and mauves. You can also make a safe choice with taupe and magenta tones.

Whoever said bold and bright colors aren’t for deep complexions didn’t realize that these colors are much easier to blend and look more natural on darker skin tones; Think bright reds or oranges for a bolder pout.

Earth toned colors like deep browns look most flattering on dusky skin tones.

Which color eyeliner is best for dark skin?

Burgundy or red can look so gorgeous on dark skin because they turn kind of coppery. So you can play with pencil liner in a burgundy tone or metallic plumy tone, something that’s more red but not too bright. It translates really beautiful with your melanin.

If you think it doesn’t matter which eyeliner you use if you want to impress with your peepers, think again, sis. Famed makeup artist Nick Barose, the man behind Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning looks for awards season 2020, has plenty of tools in his glam arsenal.

And he’s worked with the Lancôme ambassador long enough to understand which ones are taking her beauty look to the next level. He shared his eyeliner expertise with ESSENCE and specifically how to make eyeliner pop on dark skin tones.

What do you mean when you say not all black liners are created equal?

When it comes to black eyeliner, they won’t define all of your eyes. It depends on your skin tone. Some black may turn a little blue, or some black may turn a little gray, which is okay. Sometimes when it’s so black it can be tiring and it can age. But if you use black that isn’t rich enough, it will turn a little gray. On darker skin, especially deep dark skin, black turning a little gray won’t define your eye from a distance.

Article continues after the video.

Is there a difference between liquid and pencil? Is one better than the other?

I think it depends on the formula. Liquid liner is such a makeup staple because sometimes you don’t even need eyeshadow if you do your eyeliner a certain way. Spreading it out lifts your eye, making it thicker gives dramatic rock star cat eyes, or using very close to the lash line makes your lashes look thicker. I don’t like pencils that are too soft because they always break. But I also don’t like them too hard because you have to press them really hard against your eyes. And I don’t like using one that I have to sharpen because I feel like you’ll end up wasting it. I like the automatic pencil like the Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner.

Is there anything women with darker skin tones should be aware of if they want a liner to really accentuate their eyes?

Look for black eyeliner that is creamy and doesn’t discolour with green undertones when applied. Some of them can turn a bit green or gray, not black. [That means] it’s not rich enough.

Is there a quick test that women can do when trying on liners to see what their undertones are if they are unsure?

Sometimes people have dark skin and then want to use a brown liner, so it should be brown that contains black. Just put it on your hand and see if it really pops. If it blends in too much, it won’t define your eyes. When it comes to [light] shades, really anything goes. The great thing about dark skin is that any color will pop against it. If you want to make a statement and choose fun colors, then just go for it.

And I’m sure you’ve used so many brands. How can you tell if you have a quality product?

Sometimes when I get a new eyeliner I would check it on my hand and just leave it there. Then I would go around and I would wash it and if I could still see it that means it won’t smudge. You can’t really fix an eyeliner that keeps smearing. For liquid you should look for one that will hold but not lift, as when smeared it tends to lift and become runny and crumbly. You can take recommendations from people, but you also have to try it on yourself because everyone’s chemistry is different.

Any unique looks you think sisters can try this Valentine’s Day alongside a winged line or a smokey eye?

I think play with different colors too. Burgundy or red can look so great on dark skin because they turn coppery. So you can play with a pencil liner in a shade of burgundy or a metallic plum, something that’s more red but not too bright. It translates really nicely with your melanin.

Makeup for a burgundy dress

A burgundy dress is a statement piece. It has elegance, class and you can wear it in any occasion.

But with gorgeous color comes the challenge of finding the perfect makeup look.

Sometimes the wrong makeup look can spoil the whole look!

Luckily, there are some colors and looks that work together to elevate your burgundy look and nail your makeup.

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite makeup looks for a burgundy dress and the best makeup products to match and elevate your gorgeous burgundy outfit!

This post may contain affiliate links. This means if you click and buy, I may earn a small commission (at no cost to you). See my full disclosure policy for details.

What kind of makeup goes with a burgundy dress?

Before I dive into the specifics of my favorite makeup looks for your burgundy dress, I wanted to highlight a few essential makeup tips and what type of makeup will work best with your burgundy look.

Lighter is better for blush

When it comes to blush, you don’t want to go dark for your burgundy look. If you choose something too dark, it might clash with your dress. Opt for a soft pink blush to draw attention away from your cheeks to the other parts of your face you want to highlight.

Use highlighters

If you’re wearing your dress to a fun occasion, I recommend adding a touch of shimmery highlighter to your face to give your face a sparkling touch.

One of my favorite recent highlighters is this one from e.l.f

Your crease is important

For your eyes, one of the best tips for your burgundy dress is to add a nude base and a light brown crease! This creates a solid foundation to build on and play around with if you like!

Avoid brown

Brown is a very common makeup shade, but I don’t recommend it if you’re wearing a burgundy outfit. Because these two colors are so similar, they’re known to clash with each other and create a muddy mess instead of a showy look.

I’ll go into more detail on how to achieve an amazingly neutral (no brown) look below.

Mascara is crucial

Mascara is another important element of your burgundy look.

I highly recommend using a volume shadow to really draw attention to your eyes. Since burgundy is a darker color, drawing attention to your light eyes is a must!

The best mascara ever is this one from zu faces.

There are so many different ways you can apply your makeup to complement your burgundy dress.

Check out some of my favorite eyeshadow and lipstick tips for a burgundy dress below, as well as my favorite makeup looks.

Eyeshadow tips for a burgundy dress

There are a few different ways you can apply your eye makeup to complement your burgundy dress depending on what look you prefer. Here are a few of my favorites:

golden shadow

A light golden shadow is an amazing way to create a softer makeup look. It blends easily and looks a little more natural, so it’s especially perfect if you also sport a bold lip.

Smokey eyes

If you want something more eye-catching, a smokey eye is a must. I suggest using a shimmery black or gray eyeshadow and avoiding brown tones (as mentioned earlier). Be sure to blend your smokey eye well!

Lipstick with a burgundy dress

When it comes to lipstick, there are a few different directions you can go.

One of the most popular ways to pair a burgundy dress is to do a burgundy lip too.

If you decide to go this route, make sure your lip color matches the color of your dress.

If you choose a shade too late or too dark, it could clash with your dress.

A gorgeous burgundy lipstick to try is this one from L’roeal.

You can also rock nude lips if you want one of the bolder looks I mentioned earlier.

If you’re going in that direction, I recommend a matte nude lipstick instead of a glossy one. And this nude lipstick from MAC is simply the best!

Best makeup looks for burgundy dress

In closing, I want to highlight some of my favorite burgundy dress makeup looks and the easiest way to achieve them.

Whether you prefer a classic look or you are looking for something a little more eye-catching and playful, I have a look for you!

The classic charming look

If you want a classic makeup look to match your burgundy dress, look no further. For this look, you want a neutral eye and a bold burgundy lip.

Apply a small amount of light eyeshadow and a touch of eyeliner to your eye. Then apply your burgundy lips and add a bit of lip liner for an extra sharp look.

The dramatic look

If you want a really bold and dramatic look, this is for you.

I don’t usually recommend going for a bold lip and eye, but if you have a burgundy dress, you can go a little bolder.

For this look, mix burgundy and gray eyeshadow on your lid to create a gorgeous smokey eye.

Then create a winged liner look and a burgundy lip to finish it off!

Get what you need for the look with this gorgeous eyeshadow palette:

The natural look

If you prefer a natural look, I recommend starting with your foundation and applying minimal eye makeup.

A touch of mascara and a touch of highlighter in the inner corner of the eye is the way to go.

If you want to add a little extra, you can also use a soft pink lipstick!

Get what you need for the look with this gorgeous eyeshadow palette:

The eye-catcher look: classic smokey eye

I love a good smokey eye and it goes perfectly with a burgundy outfit.

You can choose either a black or a burgundy smokey eye. Don’t forget to add mascara and some liner to complete your eyes. I also recommend going with a matte nude lip to finish off this look and draw attention to your eyes.

Get the look:

The soft look

If you want a softer look, playing with pink is a fun way to do it. Add a soft pink eye shadow, some mascara and a nude lip to create a softer and more romantic look to match your bold dress.

The sparkling look

If you want to add a little sparkle to your burgundy look, the best place to do it is the eye.

Add a touch of shimmer to your lid and create a winged look with your liner to draw even more attention to your eyes. For your lips, I suggest a soft pink, either matte or glossy, depending on your preference!

How to find the perfect foundation for dark skin

Finding the best foundation for dark skin is no longer like finding a unicorn. Today there is a wider range of foundations and makeup for women of color than ever before – something for every shade of beauty! Where is the best place to start to find your own flawless foundation? Read on for our pro tips on choosing the perfect foundation for brown and black skin.

What’s your undertone?

Before you start looking for makeup for dark skin, you need to know your skin type’s undertone. This isn’t how light or dark your skin is, it’s the underlying tone of your complexion. Undertones can be warm, cool, or neutral.

To see your undertone, look at your skin in natural light. Focus on the tone of your skin and ignore redness, rosacea, acne or any other discoloration. Here’s how to identify your undertone:

Warm Undertone: Your skin has a golden, yellowed, peachy, or honey tone. Check the insides of your wrists. If your veins appear greenish then you have a warm undertone. Still not sure? Do the jewelry test. Gold looks better than silver on women with warm undertones. Cool Undertone: Your skin has hues of pink, red, or blue and could be described as coffee or chocolate in color. Your veins will most likely appear bluish or purplish. Sure, everyone looks great in gold, but silver sets you apart. Neutral Undertone: Your skin obviously doesn’t have warm, pink, or blue undertones. Women with this balanced skin tone can wear more shades of foundation within a given color palette. Your veins look both green and blue. Gold or silver jewelry, it doesn’t matter, you look stunning in both.

Skin of Mented

Foundation Shade Finder for victory

Now that you’ve figured out your undertone, it’s time to start finding the root tone that makes your skin sing.

Finding the perfect shade is now easier than ever with different shade guides that exist for different products available today. Mented offers an online foundation shade finder that is easy to use and will help you find the best makeup product for your skin type. Each of Mented’s 16 foundation shades can be compared side-by-side in the Finder. Information on the color sector of each shade – either light, brown, medium or deep – and the specific undertone of the shade is noted. In addition to the color description, each shade includes a swatch and a woman wearing the foundation so you can look at skin tones that are similar to yours to find the best match.

Full coverage table

To top off your skin coverage needs, you probably need a supplemental concealer for dark skin. Concealer is your best friend when it comes to covering blemishes, hyperpigmentation, scarring—you name it. It is also used to highlight areas like the bridge of the nose and around the eyes. Pairing a concealer with a darker shade of contouring can help define your facial features.

We make finding your concealer and contouring shades a breeze with our full coverage chart. This chart lists each base foundation shade and the corresponding concealer and contour shades for each skin tone so you can achieve completely natural-looking coverage. If you’re new to these additional products, learn how to incorporate them into your everyday look with a step-by-step dark skin makeup tutorial.

Test it before you apply

When choosing a foundation shade, test it out before applying it all over your face. The ideal test point is on your jawline. This is where your skin’s natural tone shines and is a good indicator of whether the foundation is the right one.

A foundation that looks chalky means it’s too light. Conversely, a muddy-looking foundation means it’s too dark. As for undertones, your skin will shed color that doesn’t complement it. For example, a woman with warm undertones will look pink when wearing cool foundation. Likewise, cool skin looks yellowish with a warm foundation. Essentially, you want a foundation color that blends into your skin from your face to your neck.

If it’s difficult to focus on one color, try testing three shades. A lighter, medium, and darker color play off each other, making it clearer which one is right for you. To help you with this, Mented offers a sample pack for just $5 that includes samples of 16 different primer colors so you can experiment and find your perfect match.

change of seasons

One thing to keep in mind when testing and applying foundation is that your skin color can change from season to season. Depending on how your skin reacts to the sun, you may be a shade or two darker in summer than in winter.

Some women adjust to seasonal changes in skin tone with a different powder or bronzer. Other women may need a lighter foundation in the fall and winter and a slightly darker foundation for the sunnier months. As you switch foundations across seasonal changes, stick to the same undertone color profile when choosing your shade. Your undertones stay the same whether your skin is sun-kissed or not.

foundation done right

High quality, natural looking makeup specifically for dark skin is what Mented is all about. We know how difficult it was to find the perfect foundation for dark skin tones, so we wanted to change that. Our glide-on foundation sticks are hydrating, lightweight and buildable to give you the coverage your skin deserves. From foundation to eyeshadow to lipstick for dark skin, we’re here to help you look your best!

Should foundation be darker than skin?

As per beauty experts, your foundation must be one or two shades lighter than your skin tone. This is because when you use bronzer or contour then the foundation will blend it all together and give the perfect look to your face.

Foundation shade selection

Choosing the right foundation shade is extremely difficult. It may confuse you which shade of foundation to choose. Some people advise lighter shades, while others suggest matching or darker than your skin tone. Let’s find out if the foundation should be lighter or darker than your skin?

Should the foundation be lighter or darker than your skin?

According to beauty experts, your foundation needs to be a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Because if you’re using bronzer or contouring, the foundation will tie it all together and give your face the perfect look. Even many girls have said that during the day if they use foundation along with day serums the foundation will oxidize and in this case if you have a lighter shade foundation then it will only be great.

How to choose the right foundation shade

Let’s take a look at how to choose the right foundation shade for you –

1. Let the saleswoman guide you – When you visit professional makeup salons, the saleswoman at these places will definitely guide you. They give you a perfect idea of which shade of foundation to go for. Therefore, it is best to trust them.

2. Jaws and Chin – Yes, that’s right. The foundation color should match your jawline and chin area exactly. If possible, try to get the bottle close to your jaw and chin area so the exact shade can be seen. If the store allows you to test the foundation, apply it to your jawline and chin and see if it dissolves completely or not. When the foundation has completely dissolved, it’s the perfect shade.

3. Daylight – A foundation performs best when tested in natural daylight. Therefore, test a foundation near a window for the most accurate match possible.

4. Two shades of foundation – It is always advisable to buy two shades of foundation. Our skin color changes, so if you have two shades of foundation, it’s easy to mix them together and find a match.

5. Foundation and blemishes – the important point here is that foundation is not there to cover up blemishes on your skin. You need to use concealer and other color correctors for your flaws.

6. Undertones matter – dark skinned women need to use products with red undertones and then only foundation will look right on your skin.

These are some of the golden rules when buying a foundation. So, if you follow the above tips and tricks, you are sure to get a perfect complement to your foundation.

Makeup Tips for Deep Skin Tones From a Makeup Artist

There was a time when foundation ranges stopped at what could best be described as dark beige – and you could forget different undertones, finishes and price points. It was the same with nude lip products – shades that looked ghostly on dark skin were considered the norm. Fortunately, there are now many more makeup options for black and dark-skinned people from a variety of brands and at different prices. Read on for the makeup artist’s pro tips for applying makeup to deep skin.

Find your undertone.

“When you’re matching complexion products for deeper skin, pay close attention to the undertones that appear in the center of the face as well as the center of the chest,” says NYC-based makeup artist Jonet Williamson. “These are the areas that show whether a person has a more olive, golden, cool, or warm undertone.” There are many tricks to determining your undertone, but the best way is to see what colors look best on you look best. If cool colors like blue, silver, and white brighten your complexion, you’re probably on the cooler side. If you prefer warmer hues like red, yellow, and gold, you have warm undertones. Olive undertones have a slight yellow or green tint to them, and many foundations appear too pink or too yellow on them. “This varies from person to person, but I’ll say if you’re having trouble finding your perfect match, you may need to look for tones on the olive side,” says Williamson.

If you’ve found a foundation that suits your skin tone but is either too cool or too warm, consider blending the shade with the NYX Professional Makeup Total Control Pro Drop Foundation Hue Shifter. It comes in four shades including cool red, warm yellow, and black and white to add depth or brighten.

Sleek’s i-Divine Eyeshadow Palette in the ‘Original’ shade is the ultimate palette for those who love a shimmery look, whether it’s browns and golds or bright blues and greens. It’s one of the few palettes where all shades complement a mix of darker skin tones, and the formula is great too. All the shades are super pigmented and long lasting – I always use a lighter shade of concealer as a base before applying eyeshadow and with this I haven’t noticed any wrinkles or ashy texture throughout the day. It stayed for hours. However, what I liked most about the eyeshadows (particularly the gold shades) was the glowing effect, thanks to the mica particles used in the formula. This is great for creating a glamorous effect and the vibrant colors are perfect for creating celebrity endorsed eyeshadow looks.

Huda Kattan of Huda Beauty is known for her flawless, filter-like makeup range that’s among the best in the world, from glowing highlighters to flash-sculpting mascaras. However, one of the beauty mogul’s most impressive offerings is her carefully curated color swatches in the brand’s eyeshadow palettes. Late last year, the brand launched an updated version of the famous New Nude palette, this time dubbed the Naughty Nude Eyeshadow Palette. Composed of warm pinks and golds, similar to Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Instant Eye Palette, it’s made up of a range of textures: five high-shine metallic shades, three multi-reflective marbled shimmering creams, and eight velvety matte shades—all so easy to glide on Apply to the skin. I found the shade ‘ungamed’ – a pigmented matte aubergine shade – to be incredibly flattering on dark skin, especially paired with ‘spicy’. It can be difficult to find eyeshadows that are shimmery but not gooey, but this palette ticks all the boxes.

The formula was also great as I had no wrinkles throughout the day.

3. Founded in 2019 by Nigerian-born beauty chef Sharon Chuter, UOMA Beauty is a brand dedicated to providing a makeup range that suits all skin tones. The UOMA Beauty Black Magic color palette is a perfect example of the brand getting this right, with the Poise palette in particular offering a gorgeous range of deep tones to suit darker skin. I found all of the shades in it incredibly pigmented and particularly loved the OMO and EJA shades, two creamy matte textures in warm brown/peach tones that blend easily together and compliment my complexion. As someone who gravitates toward shimmery eyeshadows, I’m very picky about the matte shades I choose and found this one to be exactly what I was looking for. It would be an excellent palette to pair with the Pixi Beauty Balm, which is also ultra-pigmented.

If you love warm tones then this palette is for you as Urban Decay is also launching a brand new collection for all longtime fans soon. Comprising neutrals of copper, burnt orange, brown, gold and burgundy tones, Urban Decay’s Naked Heat eyeshadow palette is a huge favorite among beauty influencers, including one of my longtime favorites, Jackie Aina. All 12 shades are a mix of shimmer and matte textures, with Lumbre and Sauced being my two favorite shades. While Lumbre is more of a nighttime look thanks to its shimmering mix of gold and burgundy, Sauced is great when paired with the shade Chaser to create a natural look for the day. All shades are deeply pigmented which means a small amount goes a long way and you don’t have to worry about creasing or refilling throughout the day as they stay in place.

NARS Cosmetics is another brand that has always embraced black and brown skin tones with everything from extensive foundation and concealer lines to their eyeshadow lineup. The brand’s Afterglow eyeshadow palette is one of my personal favorites due to its beautiful color combination. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it’s also one of the very few palettes that I’ve used every single shade on. While I’d definitely say it’s more on the glamorous side, with bright colors and shimmering textures dominating, there are a few buildable shades that can create a more understated look if you’re not quite ready for something as bold as one white eyeliner look are still. The gold tones were particularly tasty on my skin, while the shimmery purple looks great on darker skin tones as well. In addition, the super slim design of the packaging is another highlight of this palette.

How to choose the best eyeshadows for dark skin

There are a few things to consider when shopping for eyeshadows for deeper skin tones, as well as keeping an eye on your palette’s expiration date. “For people with darker skin tones, it can be frustrating to use eyeshadow when it gets chalky or ashy. Thankfully, the makeup industry has upped its game when it comes to eyeshadow formulas,” says an expert at Sleek Makeup, a brand that has always catered to darker skin tones. “Our new and improved i-Divine eyeshadow formula delivers our strongest color payoff yet, plus they’re so easy to blend.” Here are some other tips to help you find your perfect shade:
