These operational guidelines are provided for law enforcement and government officials who wish to request Snapchat account records (i.e., Snapchat user data) from Snap Inc.

US Legal Process

As a US company, Snap requires US law enforcement and government agencies to follow US law in order for Snap to disclose all Snapchat account records.

Our ability to disclose Snapchat account information is generally governed by the Stored Communications Act, 18 U.S.C. Sections 2701 et seq. The SCA requires that we disclose certain Snapchat account records only in response to certain types of legal process, including subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants.

International legal process

Outside the United States, law enforcement and government agencies generally must rely on the mechanisms of the Legal Assistance Agreement or Letter of Legal Assistance to request Snapchat account records from Snap. As a courtesy to law enforcement outside the United States, we will review and respond to duly filed hold requests while the MLAT or mutual legal assistance process is in progress.

Emergency Disclosure Requests

In compliance with 18 U.S.C. Sections 2702(b)(8) and 2702(c)(4), we are able to voluntarily disclose Snapchat account information if we have a good faith belief that an emergency involving a risk of imminent death or constitutes serious bodily harm requiring immediate disclosure of such records.

Data Retention Periods

Generally, once a snap has been opened by all recipients, the content is permanently deleted and no longer available. If a Snap is left unopened by one or more recipients, it may remain on our servers for up to 30 days. A snap posted to a user’s story can be viewed for up to 24 hours. Typically, the posted Snap will be permanently deleted 24 hours after it was posted to its story and will no longer be available. Chat content is usually only available if the sender or recipient has opted to save the chat. Storage contents may be available until deleted by a user.

retention requests

We comply with formal law enforcement requests for information retention under 18 U.S.C. § 2703(f). Upon receipt of a signed and dated retention request on law enforcement letterhead, we will attempt to retain available Snapchat account records associated with properly identified Snapchat users in an offline file for up to 90 days and will increase the retention by one additional 90-day period with a formal renewal request. Child safety concerns

Where we are made aware of potential child exploitation content on our platform, our Trust & Safety team investigates the allegations and, where appropriate, reports such situations to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. NCMEC will then review these reports and coordinate with national and international law enforcement agencies.

User Consent

Snap does not share user data based on user consent.

User Notice Policy

Snap’s policy is to notify our users if we receive legal action to disclose their recordings. We recognize two exceptions to this policy. First, we will not notify users of legal action if the notification is warranted by a court order under 18 U.S.C. forbidden is. Section 2705(b) or any other statutory authority. Second, we reserve the right to refrain from notifying the user if we believe, in our sole discretion, that there is an extraordinary circumstance – such as cases of child exploitation or a risk of imminent death or serious bodily harm.

Is IP grabbing illegal – yes or no?

First, what is IP grabbing?

Well, it’s when someone uses a third-party service to “grab” your IP address. For example, they could use Grabify. This allows them to create a link that they can send to you. When you access them, they can see your IP address (among other information) on their page, as follows:

So is IP grabbing illegal?

nope There is no specific law preventing someone from attacking you with an IP grabbing tool. Your IP address is pretty public information at this point — just like your address or phone number.

However, what someone does with your IP address can become illegal.

Here’s when IP grabbing is against the law

When the person grabbing it decides to DDoS you (basically force you to go offline with cyber attacks). They can attack your network with a DDoS attack because they know your IP address. In most places this is illegal. However, DoS attacks may not always be illegal as they are weaker than DDoS attacks. However, if someone keeps attacking you, you can contact the police.

When the person who stole your IP address tries to use it to hack your computer remotely. Usually an IP address is not enough for this, but some skilled hackers might misuse Shared Resources to perform such cyber attack. They could also use it to scan for open ports which they then try to exploit to take over your device.

When someone uses IP grabbing to target you with phishing attacks. For example, they use it to find out who your ISP is and then target them with phishing and vishing attacks.

Is IP tracking illegal?

Sounds like it should be, but usually it isn’t. This is how websites track their users and display ads across the web. Businesses also use it for all sorts of B2B purposes (marketing, service delivery, analytics, etc.).

As long as they comply with legal data processing requirements (like GDPR), there is no conflict with the law.

Is it illegal for a person to track your IP address?

Again not really. You can freely use services like IP Logger or IP Tracker to keep track of your IP address. There is no specific law against this.

But if they track your IP address for illegal purposes (harassment, stalking, DDoS-ing, cyber-attacks, etc.), it’s obviously against the law.

Should You Hide Your IP Address?

That’s up to you.

If you want to enjoy more privacy and not have websites and random people track it, then by all means, you should. The same goes if you don’t want hackers to abuse it or use it for DDoS.

The ability to prevent someone from finding out what country and city you are from, who your ISP is, and what your zip code is.

No risk of a cybercriminal logging them and selling them on the dark web.

IP bans do not prevent you from playing online or posting on forums.

How can you hide your IP address?

These are the most convenient ways to do this:

1. Use a VPN

This is an online service that masks your IP address and encrypts your traffic. Here’s how the process works:

2. Use a proxy

A proxy server works in a similar way to a VPN – it intercepts your connection requests to the Internet and forwards them on your behalf. Therefore, every website you visit only sees the IP address of the proxy server.

However, unlike a VPN, proxies do not offer powerful encryption. Sometimes they don’t offer any at all.

So you get some privacy by hiding your IP address, but your traffic may not be secure. Furthermore, if you use a free proxy operated by a malicious actor, they could be logging your data.

3. Use mobile data or switch Wi-Fi networks

If you’re on your phone and want to change your IP address quickly, try switching from WiFi data to mobile data.

You’re using your carrier’s network instead of your WiFi network’s ISP, so you get a different IP address.

What if you have a limited mobile data plan and usually use WiFi?

In this case, you can switch Wi-Fi networks to change your IP address.

4. Ask your ISP to change it

They gave you your current IP address, so you can ask them to change it. Maybe see if they can also offer a dynamic IP address (one that changes at regular intervals).

If you already have a dynamic IP address, you can usually change it by restarting your router.

Can you hide your IP address with Tor?

yes you can do that Just like with a VPN, your connections go to the internet through a server. So everyone can see the IP address of the Tor server you are using.

But we must warn you – Tor has had and continues to have problems with IP leaks:

Is IP grabbing illegal? The final result

Unless the person hijacking your IP address wants to use it for something illegal — like DDoSing you or hacking into your computer.

Go to the options menu in the email. Find the email you want to track and open the drop-down menu. This is usually three dots at the top or bottom of the email. Open Email Raw Data Choose the option that says something like “Open Email Raw Data” or “View Original”. Find the IP address There are multiple IP addresses in the raw email data. Hiding your IP should play your secondary role. First, for a client device like a smartphone, an IP address is not generally a fixed IP.
