A day or two ago I noticed that a new shortcut had been added to the Google search bar on my home screen. Suddenly, a button for Google Lens appeared out of nowhere. I immediately took to Twitter because I thought I actually got something before everyone else. For the most part I had, but there were a few other people who got it either shortly before me or at the same time. A nice person said, “You’re late,” whatever that means, because we all know a wizard is never late.

Anyway, this new addition to the search bar lets users quickly jump to Google Lens so you can scan images already in your gallery or scan things with your camera app.

Right now I don’t see a toggle to disable that Lens button, just in case you don’t want it. If you search for the native search bar in the customization panel, nothing comes up. It may be hiding somewhere else. What I do know is that the Lens logo will change alongside any other changes you make in this menu, so that’s good.

Google strangely doesn’t make a big deal out of it, and you really have to try your best to even realize it exists. But once you uncover it, you’ll feel like you have a magic wand in your pocket.

At its core, Google Lens is best described as a real-world search engine. It uses artificial intelligence to identify text and objects both in images and in a live view from your phone’s camera, and then allows you to learn about and interact with these elements in all sorts of interesting ways. But while Lens’ ability to, say, identify a flower, look up a book, or give you information about a point of interest is certainly impressive, it’s the system’s more mundane productivity powers that are far more likely to find a place in your everyday life . today’s life.

So grab your next Android gadget, install the Google Lens app if you haven’t already, and get ready to teach your phone some spectacularly useful new tricks.

Google Lens Trick #1: Copy real-world text

Google Lens’s greatest power, and the one I rely on the most, is its ability to extract text from a physical document — a paper, a book, a whiteboard, a suspiciously wordy tattoo on your torso, or anything else which something is written – and then copy this text to your phone’s clipboard. From there, you can easily paste the text into a Google Doc, Note, email, Slack chat, or anywhere else.

To do this, simply open the Google Lens app and tap the “Search with your camera” section at the top of the screen. Point your camera at any text around you, then tap your finger anywhere in the viewfinder — and you can select exactly the section of text you want, as if it were regular old digital text on a website.

All that’s left is to hit the “Copy Text” command in the panel at the bottom of the screen, and every last word is on your system clipboard, ready to be pasted wherever your beating little heart desires.

Google Lens Trick #2: Send real-world text to your computer

Let’s face it: Most of us don’t just work with our Android phones. If you need to get text from the real world onto your computer, Lens can do that for you too.

Just go through the same steps we did a second ago, but this time look for the “Copy to Computer” option in the panel at the bottom of the screen. As long as you’re actively signed in to Chrome with the same Google account on a computer — on any computer, whether it’s Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chrome OS — you should see this option. And when you tap on it, you get a list of all available destinations.

All you have to do is select the system you want, and as if by magic, the text from the physical document is on that computer’s clipboard, ready and waiting to be pasted anywhere. Press Ctrl-V (or Cmd-V on a Mac) and shazam! It appears in any text field, app, or process where pasting is supported.

Google Lens Trick #3: Have real-world text read aloud

Maybe you just got a long memo, some sort of paper briefing, or a letter from your dear Aunt Sally. Whatever it is, give your eyes a rest and let Lens read it for you while you’re on the go and between meetings.

Just point your phone at the paper, just like before, and tap the “Text” option again. Select the text you want – and this time look for the little “Listen” option at the bottom of the screen.

Slap your pinky on that bad boy, and the Google Lens app will actually read the selected text out loud to you, in a reassuringly pleasant voice. Hey Google, how about a bedtime story while we’re at it?!

Google Lens Trick #4: Interact with text from an image

In addition to live content, Lens can pull and process text from images — including both actual photos you’ve taken and screenshots you’ve taken.

That last part opens up some pretty interesting possibilities. Let’s say you just received an email with a tracking number, but the tracking number is a weird type of text that annoyingly can’t be copied. (That seems to happen way too often to me.) Or maybe you’re looking at a web page or presentation where the text isn’t selectable for some reason.

Well, take a screenshot – by pressing your phone’s power and volume down buttons together – and then go to the Google Lens app. On the Lens home screen, find and tap the screenshot and tap Text at the bottom of the screen. And then you can just select the text you want.

From there, you can copy the text, send it to a computer, or do any of Lens’ other limitless tricks. Speaking of…

Google Lens Trick #5: Search for text in any physical document or image

After selecting any type of text in the Google Lens app, swipe your finger left on the row of options on that bottom of the screen – the one with “Copy Text”, “Copy to Computer”, etc. You would never realise, but more options hide to the right of those initial choices.

One of them is the simple but extremely useful “Search”. (And sometimes Lens will even populate related results right into that bottom screen pane without the need for an additional search.) Remember, this is a super easy way to get info about text from a physical document or a captured image without the having to type words in manually.

Google Lens Trick #6: Look for similar images

In addition to searching for the text of an image, Lens can also search the web for other images that match the actual object in your photo or screenshot. It’s a fantastic way to find visually similar images or even identify something like a specific phone model or product featured in a photo.

To pull off that bit of Google magic, look for the “Search” option in the main bar of options at the bottom of the Lens interface — which, confusingly, isn’t the same as the text-oriented “Search” command we just went by.

Google Lens Trick #7: Create a calendar event

Every time you see something with a date — a flyer, billboard, appointment card, or even a physical invitation to your dear Aunt Sally’s weekly Canasta game — save yourself the trouble of entering the information into your digital calendar and open it Just use the good old Google Lens app instead.

Point your Android phone’s camera at the paper, then tap the date. Lens should give you an option to “Create a calendar event” at the bottom of the choices at the bottom. When you tap it, the information is pushed straight to your favorite calendar app, so you can customize and save it as needed.

And a quick bonus tip: Don’t forget that all of these things work, even if you’re holding up your phone to snap a picture of something on your computer screen. It’s a spectacular way to save time and steps when working on different devices.

Google Lens Trick #8: Save someone’s contact information

If you find yourself holding a business card and thinking, “Well damn, I sure don’t want to type all that in my Contacts app,” first congratulate yourself on the excellent use of Blimey — and then sit down back towards the beautiful person shell and let Lens do the heavy lifting for you.

Open Lens, point your phone’s camera at the map, and tap the person’s name. The Google Lens app should recognize the type of information and prompt you to add a contact.

One more tip and the deed is done.

Google Lens Trick #9: Email, call, text, or navigate to a website

Do you have an address or number you need to get on your phone for a specific type of action? It could be on a business card, on a letter, or even on the front of a random business door. Either way, just open the Google Lens app, point your phone at it, and tap the text. (Or Option B: Take a photo of the information in question and refer to it later in the Lens app.)

Once Lens sees it, it offers to do what’s best for the type of information in question. Then, with a single tap, you have the address ready to pull into a new email draft, the number to call or send in your dialer or messaging app, or the website to be accessed and in can be viewed in your browser — no time-wasting typing required.

Google Lens Trick #10: Translate real-world text

If you ever stare at a sign in another language and wonder what on earth it says, remember that the Google Lens app has a built-in translation feature. To find it, open the app, point your phone at the text, and tap the word “Translate” at the bottom of the screen.

Before you know it, Lens is replacing the words on your screen with their English equivalents (or with a translation into your chosen language, if English isn’t your thing) — in virtually real time. It’s almost uncanny how fast and effective it is.

Google Lens Trick #11: Act as your on-demand calculator

Next time you have a numeric challenge in front of your weary peepers, give your musty old brain a break and let Lens do some good old-fashioned solutions for you.

Just open Lens and point your phone at the equation in question – whether it’s on a whiteboard, a physical piece of paper, or even a screen in front of you. Scroll along the line at the bottom of the Lens viewfinder screen until you see the word “homework” (and don’t worry: despite what that label might imply, you don’t have to be an annoyingly youthful and bushy student to use it).

With everything from simple equations to advanced math, chemistry, physics, and biology, Lens will eagerly do your calculations for you and spit out an answer in no time.

I won’t say it if you don’t.

Google Lens Trick #12: Scan codes galore

There was a time when Android code-reading apps were all the rage — and many people still have them today. As long as the Google Lens app is on your phone, guess what? You don’t need anything else.

Just open Lens, point your camera at any barcode or QR code, and whoops: Lens offers to show you anything that code contains faster than you’re saying, “What does QR even mean?”

But wait: there’s more! If you have one of Google’s own Pixel phones, the process is even simpler…

Google Lens Trick #13: Use Lens from your phone’s image search, photos and camera

All of these tricks we just talked about can work not only from the actual Google Lens app, but also from some other potentially useful spots on your phone:

Google Image Search: Every time you look at an image on images.google.com in your phone’s browser, look for the Lens icon in the top-right corner. Tapping it will activate Lens and give you all the pertinent information about what’s on view.

Finally, a little meta-tip: If you ever want to quickly open the Google Lens app, skip the usual swiping and tapping and instead say, “Hey, Google: Open Google Lens.” As long as you have the Lens app installed your friendly neighborhood assistant will be happy to help you.

In this blog post, we will show you how to disable “Search Google Lens for image” in Google Chrome and revert to the old “Search Google for image” option.

What is Google Lens?

Google Lens is a feature introduced in Google Photos and Google Assistant. You can use it to search for images on the web just by pointing your camera at them. Google Lens can also identify objects, landmarks, and text in photos.

The new Google Lens feature replaces the regular internet search for images in a recent Google Chrome update. It lets you focus on specific parts of a photo and search for them online, which can yield better results.

However, many have gotten used to the regular “Search Google for image” feature, which involves simply uploading the photo and searching online for identical copies. If you want to return to this function, you can follow the guide below and keep searching images as you like!

How to disable Google Lens and re-enable image search

How do I disable Google Lens and re-enable image search?

Go to “chrome://flags/#enable-lens-region-search” and disable it.

Let’s explain this in detail.

Google Lens is a handy Google Chrome feature, but it’s easy to turn off if you don’t want to use it anymore. We recommend trying Google Lens at least once before disabling the option entirely, so you know what you’re missing out on!

Open Google Chrome and click on your address bar. Type or copy and paste the following address in the bar, then press Enter on your keyboard to navigate to the correct page: chrome://flags

Look for the Search Tags input box at the top of the page. Enter the word “lens”.

‘ and wait for Google Chrome to look through the available flags. Click on the drop-down menu next to the Search your screen with Google Lens option. Select Disabled from the available settings

Click on restart

Button that appears at the bottom of the page. This will close Google Chrome, complete the change, and automatically reopen the browser.

After disabling the feature, the Google Lens feature will no longer appear when you right-click an image and want to search for it on the web. Instead, you’ll see the regular “Search Google for image” option in the context menu.

Hello, 1st time here in the forum. I recently bought a new iphone 12 pro max. and i thought i should put a camera lens protector on it. You only have the rounds. After they installed it for me, when I went home I noticed the round ghost thing on the phone when I was using the camera.

Google is testing adding the Google Lens button in the mobile search results bar. That camera icon, the Google Lens logo, would trigger your camera and you can then search by taking pictures.

Before you can use Google Lens, make sure you have downloaded the app to your phone from the Google Play Store. And remember that it’s only available to users with an Android phone (unless you’re using Google Photos, which you can see directions for below).

Once that’s done, here’s how you can use it to identify images via Google Assistant on an Android phone:

1. Long press the Home button to open Google Assistant.

2. Tap on the compass icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.

How to use Google Lens over Google Photos

Alternatively, if you don’t already have Google Assistant enabled on your phone or don’t have access to it, you can access Google Lens through the Google Photos app.

First take a picture of what you want to identify. Then open the Google Photos app, select that photo and tap on the Google Lens icon. From there, you should be able to access all of the above tools and features on your Android phone.

You can use Google Lens through Google Photos on your iPhone or iPad, but some of your options are limited. For example, you cannot identify products and barcodes.

Disable Google Lens image search in Chrome

Google introduced Lens back in 2017. It’s an image search feature that uses AI and machine learning to provide intelligent search results. It can also help with real-time language translation and provide links to image source.

Previously, Chrome used the normal reverse image search when you clicked the “Search image on Google” option in the right-click menu. But now it uses Lens to find what’s in the photo at a deeper level.

Not everyone may prefer Lens’ results. So, for all those who prefer image search on Google over Lens, here’s how to disable Lens image search in Chrome. The methods also work on other Chromium-based browsers.

Method 1 – Disable lens image search with chrome flags

Google lens image search is a built-in Chrome feature that was recently added to the browser. Luckily, you can head over to the flags page and easily disable them in Chrome for PC. Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1: Type chrome://flags/#enable-lens-region-search in Chrome address bar.

Step 2: Experiments page will open with “Search your screen with Google Lens” highlighted in yellow.

Step 3: Click on the drop down menu next to it. Select Disabled and restart Chrome.

Now when you right-click an image and search it, it uses the old Google image search instead of Google Lens.

Method 2 – Using search by image extension

Search By Image is a powerful extension that allows you to search for an image on different platforms. All you have to do is right-click on an image and select the desired search engine.

Using it, you can have Google Lens Search and the old Google Image Search together in the right-click menu. It can be set up in a few simple steps:

Step 1: Visit Search By Image on the Chrome Web Store.

Step 2: Click Add to Chrome. Then tap Add extension to confirm.

Step 3: Right-click any image and choose Browse for Image.

Step 4: Here you can select Google to search with Google image search. Or the website you want to search.

You can also click All Search Engines to search the image in all search engines at once.

To search only on Google without adding extra steps, go to extension settings and disable all other search engines except Google Images.

Method 3 – Use Try it out to use the old reverse image search

Let’s say you don’t mind Google Lens but still want an option to search Google images in case the result doesn’t match what you were looking for. Well, Google allows you to re-search the image in Google search. Let’s take a look at where to find this option.

Step 1: Right-click on an image and search using the default Google Lens.

Step 2: Scroll down the results page. You should see a message that says, “Didn’t find what you were looking for? Try again with Google Images” with a “Try it” button next to it.

Step 3: Click “Try it” to search the image again in Google image search.

It will search the image on Google Images. You can also open images.google.com directly in another tab and drag and drop images to search Google.

Method 4 – Disable Lens with Chrome Flags on Android

Like the PC version, the Chrome browser on Android uses Google Lens to reverse search images. Since there are no extensions that could help you on Android, we’ll use the flags approach to disable this feature. The steps are explained below.

Step 1: Copy chrome://flags/#context-menu-translate-with-google-lens and paste it into Chrome address bar.

If you don’t see this option, enable the #temporary-unexpire-flags-m95 and #temporary-unexpire-flags-m96 on the Flags page.

Step 2: Open the drop-down menu next to it and select Disabled.

Step 3: Restart Chrome on your phone.

Now when you search for images in Chrome, the default Google image search is used. iPhone and iPad users don’t need to follow this method as Chrome for iOS still uses the old image search by default.

The other option you could think of is to disable the Google app on your phone. This doesn’t change anything – it would just break the option. Therefore, there is no point in trying.

Wrap up

Google Lens is a handy implementation that adds tons of extra features, but it might not be for everyone right now. It might be annoying for some and not that reliable in terms of results.
