STEP 1. PREPARE THE LEATHER

The first step is to prepare the leather for the paint application. We do this to remove any wax, oil or silicone that may be present on the leather. Failure to remove these can lead to adhesion issues. Prepping the leather also removes the finish that has been created. If the leather is heavily soiled, first clean it with Leather Ultra Clean or warm soapy water.

Do the back and sides first. A lot of furniture these days has cracks on the back and sides and using a strong cleaner like leather prep would remove the color so we won’t be using it on the sides. All you have to do is wipe the sides with a little alcohol cleaner on a cloth. Not preparing the back and sides as thoroughly as the rest of the leather will not affect the end result as the back and sides are not actually used and therefore experience little or no stress

As the seat cushions and other areas are subjected to more wear and tear, it is more important to prepare them. The best way to do this is to rub it down with leather care and a scouring pad, this application removes the leather finish. A good way to apply this is to place two cotton balls on the sanding pad and then dampen them with Prep, fold the sanding pad over the balls and then rub the leather with it. In this way, the preparation is applied correctly and sparingly, which allows the product to last longer.

Preparing the leather in this way will remove any creases and tears on the leather. So not only does it make the leather dyeable, it also improves its appearance significantly. Heavy cracks can be filled with heavy spatula.

The leather is properly prepared when you start to see color transfer from the leather to the sanding pad or cloth. This indicates that the finish has been removed and the underlying color has been revealed. Any prominent creases in the leather may wear down faster after the color has been applied than elsewhere (this would only happen with a color change and is only one possibility). To reduce the chance of this happening, dampen some fine sandpaper (320+) in the leather prep and rub along the crease to reduce it. Then continue to the next step.

STEP 2. WIPE THE LEATHER WITH ALCOHOL CLEANER

The previous step removed the manufacturer’s finish and any silicones that are soluble in solvents. However, there are some silicones like spray paints and waxes that are not soluble in solvents and to remove them we have to use the alcohol cleaner. After using the leather conditioner, wipe the leather with a cloth dampened with the alcohol cleaner, or you can spray the alcohol cleaner directly onto the leather for easier application. Now wait 30 minutes for the cleaners to evaporate.

STEP 3. APPLY THE FIRST LAYER OF DYE

Shake the bottle of dye for about 3 minutes to ensure it is well mixed. Put a small amount on a sponge and massage into the leather. The idea is to apply a thin coat of paint and work it into any gaps, creases, and hard-to-reach areas. Apply light pressure here to work the color into the grain. If you apply too much pressure, there may be foam of paint on the surface, this is not a problem, just wipe it off with the sponge (gently).

The picture on the left shows how the leather should look after a single application of colour. DO NOT try to get a perfect finish with the first coat.

The paint dries naturally or you can speed it up with a hair dryer. After applying a base coat, apply two more coats of color in the same way as before. You can actually get a good finish without spraying paint at all! However, it is best to spray some of it on.

STEP 4. SPRAY ON DYE AND LEATHER FINISH

Wait 30 minutes for the dye to dry completely, then continue spraying the dye onto the leather. Set up your airbrush or airbrush and spray the leather from a comfortable distance, being careful not to over-apply the paint. It is best to practice a little on a piece of paper to get the spraying under control. Spray on the paint in thin layers. This avoids runs and ensures a nicer finish.

Because the dye we use is water based, it takes a few minutes to dry. We therefore recommend that you spray one area and then dry with a hair dryer. This reduces the likelihood of runs. If you see a run, simply wipe it off with a cloth or sponge and spray the area again.

There is no correct number of coats that should be applied to the leather. Spray on one coat and dry, then simply spray on one coat at a time until all of the base color is hidden. When satisfied that sufficient color has been applied, the leather finish should be sprayed onto the leather. First apply the glossy Super-Seal in three to five layers, this forms the basis for an incredibly flexible and durable finish. The shiny appearance is changed, if unintentionally, to the desired finish by applying the leather finish.

Once the super sealer has had sufficient time to dry, the remainder of the leather finish should be applied, again using the entire contents of the supplied bottle to cover the entire area in three to five coats. Always remember to allow each coat sufficient time to dry before applying the next.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

The two images above show the seat thoroughly stained. By default, the leather has a slight sheen. This can either be enhanced with a gloss finish, matted with a matte finish, or kept the same with a satin finish. Our customer required a matte finish for this item, shown in the images below.

What is leather painting?

Quite simply: leather painting is painting on leather. And painting leather is pretty easy, but it’s important to follow a few basic rules to keep your paint lasting and thriving. And luckily for you, these steps are all listed below.

If you buy any leather object – from shoes to clothing to furniture and car seats – you can paint it. So if you have a leather sofa that’s worn or stained — or you’re just plain tired of the color — you can repaint it. You can paint these items in one color or add a fancy design – anything you can think of.

Most leather you buy has a finish. It’s really important to ‘deglaze’ the leather – remove this finish – before you start varnishing. This will help the paint adhere to the leather.

If you want to paint leather, it’s a good idea to use special leather paints. These are specially formulated to adhere to leather and be flexible so the paint won’t crack or peel.

What tools/supplies are needed to paint leather?

Cleaner/Deglazer

You should purchase a leather cleaner/deglazer like Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer ($4 for 5 ounces) or Fieblings Deglazer ($4.50 for 4 ounces) to remove the finish on your leather. You can use other types of products to remove the finish, but some leather artists caution against some of these because they could damage the leather. Here are some things to try: acetone or acetone-free nail polish, lemon juice, or rubbing alcohol.

Cotton rags or cotton balls or pads or balls of wool

You’ll need one of these (more than one if you’re using the cotton balls or pads, or wool brush) to apply the cleaner/deglazer. You can also use this to apply the finisher.

Waterproof (optional)

If your lacquered leather is going to be exposed to rain or snow, use a waterproofing product like Scotchguard or Mod Podge Outdoor to protect it from the elements. The finishers are water repellent.

How to paint leather step by step:

1. Prepare your leather object

Remove anything that comes off your leather piece if you don’t want to paint it. For example, if your leather couch has legs that you can detach, detach them before you begin. If you’re painting shoes that have laces or something else that isn’t permanently attached, remove them. (You can also paint shoelaces if you want, but not when they’re in the shoes.)

2. Clean your object if it has visible dirt

Add a little dish soap to warm water, then soak a rag or sponge in the water and wipe away the dirt. You can use an old toothbrush or a larger scrubbing brush for larger objects if you need more friction.

3. Let it dry

for a short time. It’s okay if it’s still a little damp as you proceed to step 4.

4. Apply the cleanser/deglazer

Apply it to the part of your leather that you want to varnish. Use a rag or cotton balls or pads to apply the deglazer. You don’t have to use a lot of pressure, but you should rub hard enough to remove the finish.

Your leather should look duller when you’re done, and some of the paint might come off as well. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

5. Let it dry for a few minutes

This should only take 15-30 minutes. You can work on step 6 while you wait.

6. Prepare your paints

Mix your paints to get the color you want, or use straight from the jar. When mixing, be sure to mix enough to cover both shoes in multiple coats of paint, probably 3-6 coats. You want to apply thin, even layers. Take your brush and spread a little color.

You can do this on your prepared leather when it’s dry or on a piece of scrap paper. If you’ve applied it to your object and it’s too thick, wipe it off immediately with a rag or paper towel. If the color seems too thick, add some water, mix and check the consistency.

Be really careful here – just add a little water and keep testing. You can always add some more, but you can’t take it out once it’s in!

7. Protect anything not intended to be painted

Cover anything you couldn’t remove but don’t want to paint—like couch legs or shoe soles—by covering it with masking tape. To protect a larger area, you can cover it with paper or plastic and tape the edges with masking tape.

8. Apply a coat of paint

with your flat or sponge brush. Again, you want to apply the paint in thin, even coats. Applying too much paint can later lead to cracking or peeling.

9. Let the paint dry

Leave for 15-30 minutes until the paint is no longer sticky to the touch

When the term “color or marker pen” is used it can create a lot of confusion as it can refer to three different items namely acrylic pens or markers, oil based pens or markers and permanent ink pens or markers. Now let’s look at each of them individually to properly understand what an acrylic paint pen or marker is.

You’ll always know when you’re using an oil-based colored pencil or marker because you need to shake the pen vigorously before use to properly mix the color in the pen. Second, you can’t just start painting the leather, you have to follow a process. Otherwise, the paint simply won’t adhere to the leather surface and your entire project is at risk. In this section of the article, we’ll walk you through the entire process, step-by-step, to ensure your finished project turns out the way you envisioned it.

You can use a brush or wool brush to apply the sealer, or you can use an acrylic spray sealer. We recommend using the brush type as some users have encountered problems with the spray type. When applying the sealer, try not to soak the leather too much and allow the coats about five minutes to sit before applying the next coat. Continue until you have applied approximately 20 coats of sealer. You can buy the acrylic paint sealer in a matte or gloss finish, depending on which option suits you. The seal preserves the colors of your acrylic paint and ensures that your artwork retains its finest details for a long time.

Application of impregnation

After sealing your leather surface with acrylic paint, you now need to apply a waterproof spray finish that will give the paint protection, moisture resistance and durability. The waterproof coating comes in brush or aerosol spray form, but you need to make sure what you buy is compatible with acrylic paint. Just follow the directions when applying your waterproof coating. If using an aerosol spray, hold the spray can about 6 inches from the leather surface.

Once applied, allow the waterproof coating to dry for approximately 24 hours before moving the item.

Sealing acrylic paint on leather surfaces with alternative mediums

Aside from using an acrylic paint leather sealer, there are a few other methods to seal your acrylic paint finished leather surface. The alternate medium may not be as effective as sealing with acrylic paint. However, it may suit you as you may not intend to keep the artwork for long and want to remove the paint and do something else. Here are some of the options available:

Although Textile Medium is not a sealant, it can be used to allow your acrylic paint to adhere to your leather surface without peeling or cracking. Most fabric mediums are useless for applying paint to a leather surface, but Delta Creative Ceramcoat Fabric Medium has proven effective in sealing your acrylic paint to the leather surface. The Authentic Acrylic Paint Sealer must be applied after you have painted the surface with your acrylic paint. However, the Delta Creative Medium can be mixed with the acrylic paint before applying it to the leather.

If you wish, you can still seal the surface with an acrylic spray sealer after applying the color mixture.

hairspray

Hairspray is used by many for numerous reasons unrelated to hair and you might consider this option to seal your acrylic paint onto your leather surface. We strongly recommend not using this method for application to leather surfaces and here’s why. Hairspray has been used effectively to seal acrylic paint on certain surfaces, but those surfaces were flat and rigid, and the leather artworks we discuss in this article are primarily intended for garments that are in constant movement. So if you use this method on your clothes, they won’t last long and will peel and tear.

There are also numerous hairspray formulations on the market making it very difficult to give sound advice on how to use them to seal your acrylic paint onto your leather surface. As such, we recommend you avoid this option altogether and stick with the options listed above, all of which are budget-friendly and perform well.

Mod Podge

Mod Podge can be used as a medium to seal acrylic paint to your leather surface, but it is much less effective than the two methods above. While this isn’t the best method of sealing your acrylic paint to your leather surface, many DIYers already have some mod podge at home and this can be a solution to keeping costs down. One aspect to keep in mind when planning to use Mod Podge is not to use too much as you only need a very small amount to apply over your acrylic paint.

This can be an option for some of your custom creations on a leather jacket for a costume party.

Paint shoes with acrylic paint

After a while, your leather shoes start to fade and get dingy and stained, or you want to change the color of a pair of your shoes without having to go out and buy a new pair. Maybe you just want to add a little detail to the existing pattern on your shoes? Can acrylic paint be used on your shoes? The answer is yes, leather dye for shoes works well. Follow this step-by-step guide to give your shoes a new look.

Prepare the leather surface of your shoes

The first thing you need to do is give the shoes a thorough cleaning, which you can do with soap and water, leather bleach, or some isopropyl alcohol. We recommend you use isopropyl alcohol as it will remove all dirt from your shoes and will also easily remove wax or oil. If your shoes are made of synthetic or synthetic leather, the only thing that will remove the layer of silicone and polymers that is applied to the outer layer of the shoes is isopropyl alcohol. Dampen a clean cloth or towel with the alcohol and wipe the shoes, which should remove wax, oil, or other coatings on the leather surface. You need to rub the shoes with the sandpaper until you are satisfied that the shine is gone, and then use a clean damp cloth to wipe the shoes clean. You must ensure that the surface leather of your shoes is perfectly clean before you start varnishing, as any dust left behind will become embedded in the paint. Use a damp, clean cloth or towel and remove the laces as well. You can now apply a leather remover to the leather surface which will help the paint adhere to the leather. This can be applied with a clean cloth or towel and don’t be afraid to give the leather a generous amount. Also, don’t be alarmed if it slightly changes the color of your leather.

Application of acrylic leather paint for shoes

We recommend only using acrylic paint on leather as any other paint may not penetrate the leather effectively, reduce its flexibility and may crack over time. Be sure to thin your paint before starting with one ounce paint to one part water, which is best done in a bowl. Take a brush and dampen it with paint, then apply thin, smooth coats of paint. Don’t worry if the color of the shoe shows through, but continue with long, even strokes, making sure to cover the entire surface.

If you need to apply more than one coat, make sure the first coat has dried properly for about twenty minutes before applying the next coat. At this point it is important to bend the shoe back and forth to prevent the paint from cracking and if necessary apply a little more paint to the damaged areas. Add more layers of paint until you are happy with the color. This can be seven or more layers, especially if the shoes are dark in color.
