Silk painting refers to paintings on silk. They are a traditional style of painting in Asia. Methods vary but using traditional 100% silk fabrics stretched in a frame and applying textile dyes or dyes are the beginnings of an amazing creative process in making textile art and the process

One of the earliest surviving Chinese silk paintings is a 2 meter long T-shaped painting from the Mawangdui dating from around 165 BC. was dated.[1][2] However, painting on silk quickly gave way to painting on other supports.

Gutta is used as a resist in silk painting, allowing fine patterns to be achieved.

The Tibetan thangka is the most famous religious painting.

Silk painting (Tranh lụa) was a traditional handicraft in Vietnam. There were some old silk paintings, e.g. Portraits of Nguyễn Trãi, Phùng Khắc Khoan, Trịnh Đình Kiên, Phan Huy Cẩn, Phan Huy Ích, Phan Huy Thực and Phan Huy Vịnh are from the Lê and Nguyễn dynasties.[3]

modern times[edit]

Modern silk paintings in Vietnam were picked up by some students and French teachers at the EBAI in Hanoi in the 1930s.[4] The earliest exponent of the new interest in silk painting, at a 1931 Paris Silk Paintings Exhibition, was Nguyễn Phan Chánh, a student at EBAI who originally trained in calligraphy and struggled with French oil techniques, thus encouraging the headmaster Victor Tardieu to use traditional media.[5]

A: Choosing the right gloss level can completely change the look of your walls, so make sure you consider different finishes to create the greatest impact in your space. Here’s a little guide to help you with that:

The matte emulsion is smooth, velvety and helps conceal imperfections on less than perfect walls.

Pros: Dharmaset dyes are more permanent than regular acid dyes, wash quickly even in hot water, and are fully intermixable to your heart’s content to create any color or shade you desire. They are a very concentrated mixture of 1:2 metal complex, acid and reactive dyes with high wet and light fastness. Can also be painted.

Cons: Some of the paints are very expensive. They are also slightly more difficult to use than the leveling or milling class acid dyes. Once the dye bath reaches the high temperature needed to set, they tend to hit FAST!

A favorite of silk painters, H Dupont Classique dyes provide bright and clear color results on silk fabrics. Although the ironing fix silk paints offer a fair alternative, they make the fabric a bit stiffer than one color. This stiffness affects the drape of the fabric while dyes maintain flowability.

Silk dyes are permanently fixed to the silk fabric by the heat of the steam, ensuring that silk-painted items are washable. Steam setting can be done in a dedicated cloth steamer, or it can be wrapped in paper and aluminum foil and steam set with the heat generated in a vegetable steamer or in a colander placed over a pot of boiling water.

An alternative to steam setting using the above techniques is to set the painted fabric in a microwave.

How to steam Set H Dupont Classique Silk in the microwave

Use this technique for paintings created with silk paints:

Make sure the paint on the fabric is completely dry. Place the image on a piece of paper slightly larger than the silk fabric or scarf. Loosely roll the picture and paper together. This will prevent painted areas of the silk fabric from touching Gently fold the rolled fabric in half and wrap tightly in cling film Place a cup or bowl with 50ml of water in the microwave next to the wrapped silk fabric Set the microwave on full Power and ‘cook’ the packet for 2 minutes (this is based on an 850 watt or higher microwave, lower wattage microwaves may require an additional 30 seconds). The heat from the steam generated by the boiling water begins to set the dye on the fabric. Unwrap the package and expose the silk to air for a minute. Rewrap the packet and microwave for another 2 minutes

Did you know that you can actually use fabric paints as paint to create a stained design on your fabric pieces? This method is like a combination of fabric painting and fabric dyeing techniques.

Gather your materials:

textile dyes

Squirt bottles (the kind you can buy at the retail/grocery store for salad dressing or ketchup)

Paint or sponge brush

Protective materials for your clothes and work surface

Paint fabric with dyes:

Gear up.

Put on protective clothing or older clothing and rubber gloves. Cover your work surface with old towels and garbage bags to protect from paint stains. Mix the dyes.

Mix your fabric dyes in squeeze bottles by combining an appropriate ratio of fabric dye and water (check label or packaging). Make as many bottles as you like for the number of colors you want to use. Prepare the fabric.

Lay your fabric flat on your protected work surface. Smooth out any wrinkles and try to keep it in a single layer.

Tip: If you’re using acid dyes, be sure to soak your fabric in a solution of vinegar and water for 12-24 hours before you begin. If you use regular dyes, you can also use dry fabrics. Paint a design.

Use the squeeze bottle to pour a small amount of fabric paint onto your fabric. Use a sponge brush to spread or sweep the color in a specific direction.

Tip: You can use stencils or stamps for this process, just like fabric painting, but the process is messier and less precise. Repeat this step with all the dyes you want to use. Put and rinse.

Allow your fabric to sit for 10-15 minutes to fully absorb the colour, then rinse, wash and dry as usual.

Tip: If you use acid colors, they must be heat-set. Place your fabric in the microwave (in a microwave safe container that will never be used for food again) and cook on high for 3 minutes. Let rest 3 minutes and cook again, then rest 3 more minutes and cook 3 more minutes. When the fabric has completely cooled, rinse in cold water and it is ready to use.
