Triple Lakes or Slant Lake Pipe Install w Chrome Clamps

Triple Lakes or Slant Lake Pipe Installation with Chrome Clamps

There are two ways to install them with the clamps. This was the information I received from Big Jims in Whitney, TX when I bought them.1. That was the harder way and I didn’t do it that way. If you want them to hang down and out where you can really see them from a down angle, you’ll have to put the clamps inside and try to find a way to screw them down. You would have to bend the clamps up for this to work2. You can lay the clamp flat against the underside of the car and mount it that way with one screw facing in and the other on the bodywork below. That’s how I did it, here are pictures and how I installed my pipe myself. Car was dirty sorry I went into some sprinkler water this morning to teach it small hole and then ran the 3 or 3.5 inch bump head screw all the way into 2 walls (outer and inner further up on the inside ) on the outer screw. The inner screw only needs a 1.25 to 1.5 inch long screw to enter the body. I just used a drill and drilled through the screws without pre-drilling under the body. The placement picture on the front clamp is obvious for the small rectangular hole on the side and the rear was made about 1 inch from the small side panel that goes over this channel under the car on the side. Both sides were equal and the placement worked on both sides. I hope it helps. Once you have the washers and screws and drill small tap holes in the angled wall, installation is very, very quick. You can loosen the screws and roll the tubes a little, not much. The outer screws really hold the clamp in place, the one under the body just holds the clamp down. Lake pipes install??

I just picked up a set of Lakepipes (76 inch) from Jeggs and I’m a bit confused. They want me (it looks like) to use the included lag bolts to mount the tubes to the rocker arm. So let me get this straight…$10,000 paint job, and Patrait wants me to attack my rocker panels with a drill and a big chunk? … That will not happen. I built this ride around using these tubes. There must be an easier way. Has anyone else installed a set of these on a 2nd gen?

Are these pipes just for “show”? Who sells them? Read that you should attach them to headers. Other articles say they’re just for “looks”?

Lakes pipes would be the last thing I would put on a car I own. They were formerly known as Tijuana Kick Stands. They are usually installed in conjunction with illuminated swans on the hood, curb sensors and red jeweled mudflaps.

FYI… the correct term is LAKES PIPES, not Lake Pipes.

Tri5man got it right, but most people get it wrong. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen it either misspelled or mispronounced over the past 30+ years.

If you do, also lower it so that it touches every stone on the road, dual antennas, dual headlights, fender skirts, Continental kit, pinball hub caps, fuzzy dice on the mirror, suicide buttons on the steering wheel, mirror shades on the headlights, pinstripes everywhere and a big eagle on the hood ornament.

You didn’t mention Dingle Ball and Bobblehead.

I think they were still popular with van conversions in the 70’s. At least I hope so as I’ve had them on two of mine. They were functional and looked like most other vans, but I certainly wouldn’t do it today.

So Danny; The guys are enjoying themselves at your expense, but I didn’t see an answer to your question. Most Lakes pipes are installed for show purposes and are not connected to the exhaust, but may be live. Do a Google search for the term and you’ll find plenty of sources. But pay attention to quality. If you’re going to hook them up to the exhaust, you’ll want something pretty robust. You might also want to have a cutout under the car so you can run the exhaust through those if you want, but if “Smokey” is around you might want to run through your mufflers.

As for using it on your car; Do it. Well the guys here wouldn’t do it, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the look YOU want. post pictures. We always like to see them.

You might not find many people on this forum who would consider the Lakes Pipes, but there are forums where you would be the king. Find them and spend a while with them too.

I just realized the ones I used were called side tubes. This is the type of silencer I’ve used with them and should work just fine with yours.

I still see them on cars today, I doubt they work, but if they are and still have the exhaust at the back, maybe they use cutouts to direct the flow.

I’ll take a look at a 50 Chevy PU tomorrow morning, maybe I’ve already installed it.

I see those from quite a few cars here on the coast, especially during our Cruisin’ The Coast thing. Almost all I see are functional.

I don’t care what kind of snide remarks people make about side pipes, fender skirts, Connie kits, spinner hubcaps (factory) or dual antennas, I like all of those things and have them all on my ’58 Impala except for the side pipes. My wife keeps nagging me about getting the whistles for the 58 and both Corvettes. Maybe one day.

I draw the line at dingle balls, non-factory hood ornaments, curb sensors, etc.

My recommendation to those of you who don’t like the pipes, skirts, Connie kits and antennas, just don’t look at the car. I feel good so I won’t say what I really mean. By the way, 4 speeds is for people who need a phallic symbol. YEEEE-HAWW

Hmmm, here in Minnie Sota I used to call them “Sea Pipes”. They were named as such for their original use as road/day drivers brought to the salt flats, i.e. dry lake beds, such as Bonniville.

The cars I remember from the 50’s had them connected with a T in front of the muffler on each side. The end of each sea tube would be capped for street use and uncapped for competition.

Think they look ok on custom cars, no worse than skirts… just not my personal “thing”

Just curious: I’m wondering what Brian Wilson and Roger Christian have to say about this? Listen to the lyrics of the middle eight of The Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe”:

She has a tournament clutch with the four on the floor

And she purrs like a kitten until the sea whistles blare

That’s not to say that a hit is always 100% right, but Eric might be on to something here. . .

Might have been a local word, lake in some places, lakes in others. They were certainly used on a lake and “by the lakes”. Only salt lakes around here have water in them.

“Boy, I think I picked a good topic this time.”

Danny, great topic – it gave some of us a chance to shine. I had them on my ’49 Olds, which was a consistent class winner here in the late fifties and early sixties. They were the short ones coming out just behind the front wheels, and mine flowed pretty straight out of the exhaust header pipes, and the “Ys” to the exhaust system were the byways – so I had a pretty straight dump when the end plates were REMOVED.

Others are right about really violating underbody clearance, especially when they work, since you need to get the header pipes under the frame (but I didn’t want to go any lower, so no problem). I used some sort of generic exhaust pipe hanger with standard muffler clamps – mainly to keep the pipes from banging against the frame when starting. I’ve even considered having two sets of headers built for my 57 150 project – one OEM and the other with the short lakes. This way, by changing my exhaust and attaching my set of 14″ Mickey Thompson mags, I was able to go from a stock look to a stab look in about half a day.

Good luck with your project, Don
