When the number of unwanted calls reaches three, five, ten or even more each day, starting with a new phone number can be the shortest route to relief.

You can do this in two ways. Firstly by using the built in number change feature in WhatsApp and secondly by uninstalling the app.

1. Using the change number feature

If you want to change WhatsApp number on the same phone, WhatsApp provides a native way to do it. All you have to do is go to settings and use the change number feature. You don’t have to remove the app from your phone.

When you do this, here’s what happens to different things.

old account

First, your old WhatsApp number will be deleted. By this we mean that it will no longer appear in other WhatsApp contacts. If someone sends you a message on the old number (via existing chat history), it will not be delivered to you. You’ll get a single gray check mark in the message. Your last seen will also disappear.

If you decide to confirm with the new number, the following happens:

old account

If you simply uninstalled WhatsApp, your old WhatsApp account will still be active. It is a profile picture, privacy settings and groups that remain on the WhatsApp servers for 45 days. You can verify the old number again and they will all show up on your phone again.

However, if you deleted the account before uninstalling WhatsApp, nothing will be saved on the WhatsApp servers. You have been removed from all your WhatsApp groups.

Also, people can still send messages to your old number (if you’ve uninstalled it), but since WhatsApp isn’t active on either phone, you won’t receive them. If “Last seen on” was active, you can see when you were last active on the number. Interestingly, if you re-verify the old number, you will receive these messages. When you confirm the new number on the same phone, you will be offered the option to restore the chat backup. This will reappear your previous messages in your chat list.

On Android, this can be done in two ways – local backup and Google Drive. Only iCloud backup works on iPhone. So unless you have used an iCloud backup, you cannot restore old messages to a new WhatsApp number.

Since groups are linked to your old number, they will not appear on the new number. You must ask the admin to add you to the groups again.
