I wrote this post a few years ago, and it’s on my mind because I’m working on a trench coat right now, so while the Thanksgiving turkey is cooking, here it is again for your sewing pleasure…

A few things to note about this coat: The collar stand (of course it has a separate collar stand) is quite high. This helps keep rain off your neck. It also looks pretty sharp.

Buttons are either plastic or metal. My coat is navy blue; The buttons are black. Note that the button for the breast flap is smaller than the others. The buttons are supported by small plastic buttons on the back.

Buttonholes are all machined keyhole style.

The breast flap buttonhole is positioned at a 45 degree angle.

Buckles on the belt and on the sleeves are covered with leather. On some models, they match the metal buttons. The sleeves are three-piece raglan sleeves. Burberry also makes styles with two-piece set-in sleeves. The sleeves are topstitched along the upper arm seam.

The body of the jacket is lined with the classic Burberry check. Note the careful placement of the plaid along the princess seams.

The sleeves are lined with satin twill to make the coat easier to put on and take off. The sleeve linings are also three-piece raglan.

The lining is bagged. Interestingly, while the outer shell has a center back seam, the lining does not.

Burberry also positions the buttonholes so you can opt for a partially open look. It’s kinda cool and a nice casual touch.

The history of Burberry

When you think of Burberry, two signature items often spring to mind – a classic stone trench coat and bags decorated with the label’s coveted check pattern.

These tan, navy and red stripes have become synonymous with the heritage British brand’s accessories… but that doesn’t always mean they’re legit.

At first glance, it can be difficult to tell the real from the fake, especially when viewed on a computer screen, but there are some telltale signs to look for.

Are you afraid of being taken away? Milli Midwood, fashion editor at TheLuxuryCloset.com, has shared her top tips on spotting a fake Burberry bag so you can be sure before you buy.

1. Pattern

“The two most popular Burberry patterns are Classic Check (left) and Nova Check (right). The Classic Check has a tan background with black, white, and red stripes, both horizontally and vertically,” Midwood said.

Can you spot the faint knight symbol where the red lines meet? That’s an important giveaway – any deviation from it means you’re probably dealing with a scammer.

“The Nova Check pattern is slightly different, the main difference being that, like the Classic Check, there should be no faded knight insignia. Likewise, the background has a light yellow undertone, and the red lines on the Classic Check have a pink tint instead,” Midwood said.

This is almost impossible to tell when shopping online, but when you’re browsing in person or checking your delivery, you want to dig deep into these seams.

Look at how the handles and lining are sewn together — you’re looking for stitches that are “straight, neat, even, and clean with no loose threads,” Midwood said.

According to Milwood, every bag should contain either a metal plaque or a leather tag.

“The metal plaque should match the color of the bag’s hardware,” she said, adding that there will also be a “Burberry – London” engraving.

If you have a leather tag (which many Burberry bags do), look for a stamp on the back. Does it say “Made in Italy”? Good. Does it say “Made in China”? Well, that doesn’t mean it’s fake.

“These days, Burberry makes some items in China, especially smaller bags and accessories, so don’t worry,” said Milwood.

The best indicator is the distinctive font of the logo on the plaque or tag.

“The left side of the U and Y are a bit wider and the Rs have small tails,” advised Milwood.

Burberry is a British institution like no other. Synonymous with British elegance, it has ties to everything from celebrities and influencers to royalty.

The brand has grown from its humble beginnings in the mid-1950s into an international powerhouse. Like any luxury fashion house, Burberry falls victim to counterfeit bags and products.

If you’re considering buying a used Burberry bag, you’ll want to know what signs to look for to tell a real Burberry bag from a fake. Read on to learn more about these iconic bags and how to spot a fake.

The history and revival of Burberry

Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry when he was just 21 years old. The company’s mission was to make clothing that protects people from the unpredictable British weather.

In 1879, Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a waterproof fabric that revolutionized rainwear.

The brand’s distinctive equestrian logo was created in 1901 after a public competition. The predecessor of the legendary trench coat – the tie curl coat – was launched in 1912, followed a few years later by the trench coat. It was designed as a functional jacket to be worn by soldiers during the First World War.

Burberry’s trademarked check, which can be seen on most bags, first appeared in the 1920s. In the early 1990s, Burberry became synonymous with sportswear before being granted a royal warrant by Queen Elizabeth II in 1955.

This event marked the beginning of a long-term relationship between the British royal family and Burberry. Virtually every member of the family has been seen in their attire, particularly their infamous overcoats and trench coats.

In 1990, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales issued a royal warrant to Burberry as an outfitter. In 1999, Burberry’s was rebranded as Burberry and a new logo was designed by then-Art Director Fabien Baron.

Other landmark events include the live streaming of a Burberry fashion show in 2010, the first luxury brand to do so. It was also the first luxury brand to join the ethical trade initiative.

In 2011, Burberry started its first tweetwalk by streaming its Spring/Summer 2021 show on Twitter. By 2014, Burberry had 500 stores worldwide.

As part of its ethical and sustainable work, Burberry was recognized as an industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the “Textiles, Apparel and Luxury Goods” sector.

In 2018 they celebrated diversity by launching their Rainbow Vintage check-in partnership with three LGBT+ youth charities.

Current Chief Creative Officer, Riccardo Tisci, is moving Burberry towards a more contemporary and streamlined aesthetic. The new logo and TB monogram appear throughout the brand’s accessories and marketing, breaking with the former equestrian knight and heavy reliance on check prints.

Where are Burberry bags made?

In 1972, Burberry acquired its Castleford factory, home of the Burberry trench coat.

It marked the establishment of Burberry’s manufacturing presence in the UK, which continues to this day. While that’s true – and it says so on Burberry’s website – not everything is made in the UK.

Although Burberry prides itself on being a British brand, its items are made all over the world. Most Burberry bags that you will find on the market now have the stamp “Made in Italy” on the metal leather tag.

Don’t be alarmed when you see other countries like Spain, the USA or even Romania on the bag. Burberry is even known to use factories in China to manufacture its bags.

While “Made in China” is usually an automatic red flag, with Burberry it’s more complicated. The best thing to do is try to determine the year of origin of your Burberry bag – or even an approximate estimate.

The best way to use the label to authenticate the bag is to look at the font used for the Burberry world. The left side of the U and Y should be slightly wider and the three Rs should have small tails.

The changing countries of origin and the unusual practice of making bags in China means you cannot overly rely on a “made in” stamp to authenticate your bag. Take it with a pinch of salt, but don’t rely on it to determine or destroy the authenticity of your Burberry bag.

Also keep in mind that older Burberry bags – before 1999 – will be named “Burberry’s” and not “Burberry”. The same goes for other accessories you may have already purchased, including scarves.

Burberry pattern

If you’re looking to buy a used Burberry bag, you should pay special attention to bags made with the fashion house’s signature check patterns. As with any fashion brand, it’s their signature prints that are popping up in the counterfeit market.

The two imprints to look out for are the Classic Check and the Nova Check. The Classic Check is set on a tan background with black, white and red stripes running both horizontally and vertically.

The rider icon should always sit where the red lines meet. If there is any discrepancy in placement, it means the bag is fake.

The main difference with the Nova Check compared to the Classic Check is that there is no faded knight.

The print is more contemporary and lighter, with yellow undertones. The red lines have a pink undertone compared to the Classic Check.

If you can see the bag in person, the stitching is always a good indicator of whether a Burberry bag is a genuine product. You can sometimes ask online sellers to provide close-up photos of the stitching, but it’s easier to examine them in person.

Burberry stitching is always clean and even, working in a straight line or curve that conforms to the shape of the bag.

You shouldn’t see any loose threads or mismatched needlework. Although it doesn’t manufacture its bags in the UK, Burberry is known for its quality and craftsmanship.

How much do Burberry bags cost?

The cost of buying a new Burberry bag compared to buying a used bag is quite high. The brand does not maintain its value the way the big four brands like Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior do.

You can expect to save quite a bit if you buy a Burberry bag at the Pre-Loved Market instead of buying it at Nordstrom or Saks Fifth Avenue.

The price is usually determined by the style and era of the bag. The price will go down for older bags, especially those from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

You will of course pay a higher price for current bags that are readily available since it is a newer bag, especially if it is an on-trend silhouette.

It is worth remembering that Burberry is a British brand. You can expect to pay a premium to purchase any of their items outside of the UK. Whether you’re buying a bag you love or a brand new one, it’s usually cheaper to buy it in the UK.

The current Burberry handbag range includes bags in a wide range of prices. The cheapest bag is the Icon Stripe ECONYL Packaway Pocket Tote, an online bag exclusive for £390.

The cheapest bag you’ll find in the store is the bum bag, which comes in a variety of prints and material options and retails at £590.

At the top of the price spectrum is the Medium Quilted Monogram Lambskin TB Bag, which retails at £2,190. Compared to other luxury fashion brands, Burberry is in a more affordable price range.

If you’re looking to invest in a luxury bag that won’t break the bank or is easier to save money on, Burberry is an alternative to European brands like Gucci, Prada and Chanel.

Don’t forget that there is a premium to buy Burberry outside of the UK and Europe, but you can use sites like Harrods and Selfridges to buy them at a slightly better price.

This is our seventh Modern Slavery Statement and provides an overview of the progress we have made over the past year in strengthening our modern slavery prevention systems in our supply chain and operations and how we have addressed identified risks.

During this time, the COVID-19 pandemic remained a major concern and we have focused on maintaining effective communication channels with our business partners to address return-to-work challenges and to maintain a safe environment for our employees.

In fiscal year 2021/22, we continued to adapt our ethical trading program and, in accordance with updated COVID-19 restrictions, resumed personal engagement and monitoring activities at our supply chain partners’ facilities where safe and legally permitted. We also continued to look at our commodity supply chains to identify new potential risks of modern slavery.

We have expanded and strengthened our training program for both internal teams and supply chain partners to raise awareness and develop more effective prevention and mitigation measures.

While our policies have remained consistent throughout FY2020/21 and FY2021/22, our global ethical trading team is alert to potential risks and the need to update our policies accordingly.

We have continued to work with cross-industry groups such as the Business Against Slavery Forum and the ILO Call to Action to support the fight against modern slavery. We continue to monitor and assess our response to emerging areas of risk, including those caused by the global pandemic.

As a responsible company, Burberry is closely monitoring the increasing trends towards binding laws to respect human rights and ethical due diligence in commerce. We continue to raise awareness and support compliance with these standards by our supply chain partners.

SUPPLY CHAIN

We rely on a global network of raw material and finished goods suppliers to support the manufacture of our products and our general daily business operations.

Our supply chain partners are closely screened and assessed upon onboarding to identify any risks to human rights and modern slavery. In addition, all suppliers must acknowledge and sign the Burberry Responsible Business Principles upon onboarding to ensure that any form of modern slavery, including forced, bonded or involuntary prison labor, is not permitted in any way.

As part of our commitment to respecting human rights within our supply chain, we also continuously assess human rights risks and labor conditions in our global supply chain through our Ethical Trade program, launched in 2004. Since 2019, we have further expanded our responsibility program to also include the assessment of mills, tanneries and trim suppliers and their subcontractors. In the 2021/22 financial year, this includes the raw material suppliers for around 45% of our products.

CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

Finished products are manufactured both at the company’s own facilities in the UK and Italy, and by an external network of suppliers. A large part of our finished goods production takes place in Europe, where Burberry has many long-standing relationships, some exceeding 15 years. Over 85% of the finished goods plants we source from are covered by national and/or industry collective agreements, and many have established union representation, allowing workers to stay informed and participate in discussions about their rights. We believe these strong supplier relationships are key to ensuring continuous improvement in supply chain working conditions and help us to minimize supplier turnover where possible. We have visibility into all finished goods manufacturers, their subcontractors and supporting facilities, as well as mills, tanneries and trim suppliers who supply our finished goods partners.

RAW MATERIAL

We recognize that our commodity supply chains are threatened by modern day slavery and human rights abuses. For this reason, we have introduced new targets in our raw material supply chains to strengthen our supply chain transparency. These include:

Ensure all key materials are 100% traceable by 2025. The main raw materials we use are cashmere, cotton, wool, polyester, nylon and leather. For these materials we will achieve traceability to a minimum of country level. This goal achievement is supported by the use of certified materials, where the country of origin is verified and disclosed. The main raw materials we use are cotton, leather and cashmere.

Sourcing 100% certified recycled nylon and recycled polyester by 2025, with nylon or polyester being the main material of the product.

By 2025, source 100% certified wool and support certifications that meet the highest animal welfare standards

Source 100% certified organic cotton by 2025

By 2025 we will source 100% of our leather from certified tanneries with environmental, traceability and social certificates

LICENSEE

Production of our beauty and eyewear products is licensed to Coty and Luxottica respectively. Our accountability team works with both licensees to ensure they apply consistent standards consistent with the rest of Burberry’s supply chain. BUSINESS OPERATIONS

As a large global organization, we work with a number of suppliers who support our broader operations in EMEIA, Americas and Asia Pacific, including but not limited to retail stores, our e-commerce and business websites, offices, marketing and transportation . We continue to communicate our commitments and policies to prevent forced labor, bonded labor and human trafficking through our Code of Conduct (the “Policy”) to these suppliers. Further details are given in the following sections.

Additionally, beginning in fiscal 2018/2019, we have included our distribution centers, packaging, visual merchandising, reuse and recycling supply chains in our ethical trade program. We conduct a risk-based analysis of new suppliers prior to sourcing and conduct Ethical Trading Audits when risks are identified.

COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our accountability team remained in close contact with supply chain partners. Last year we organized regular calls and desktop assessments to identify supply chain needs, while this year we have largely resumed on-site visits and audits, while maintaining a mixed physical and virtual ethical trade audit approach.

Building on our COVID-19 safety and containment efforts, in fiscal 2021/22 we focused on offering mental health coaching sessions to our key suppliers to support team members during the pandemic. Led by an external specialist consultancy, the training provided our key suppliers’ corporate responsibility teams with knowledge and tools to manage their emotional well-being and that of the people in their supply chains. The training covered topics such as controlling emotions under stress, building empathy, motivating yourself and others in challenging environments.

We also make full use of our confidential employee hotlines to ensure we can continue to respond to employee needs.

Additionally, an infection control management policy was communicated to all vendors and key raw material suppliers in 2020 to assist them in providing a safe work environment and we have continued to closely monitor its implementation at supply chain partner sites.

In June 2020, we became a signatory to the COVID-19: Action in the Global Garment Industry call for action, established by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and supported by organizations such as the Fair Labor Association and the International Trade Union Confederation. The initiative works to bring the industry together as a collaborative group towards the implementation of more efficient social security systems. In addition to working with these stakeholders, we have continued to work with NGOs, suppliers, vendors and strategic partners in our sourcing regions to continue developing our ethical trade program and ensure workers’ rights are protected throughout the world pandemic.

POLICIES

We believe respect for human rights is an essential part of responsible business. Preventing forced labour, debt bondage and human trafficking is a key element of Burberry’s Human Rights Policy and Code of Conduct for Ethical Trading.

BURBERRY POLICIES

To promote human rights in our direct and indirect business operations, we require our network of business partners and our extended supply chain to adhere to our principles of responsible conduct contained in the Burberry Code of Conduct.

The principles have been developed in accordance with our commitments and our many years of experience. They have been informed by our longstanding membership of the United Nations Global Compact and are underpinned by the EIT Core Code, the International Charter of Human Rights and the Core Conventions of the International Labor Organisation. We review and update the Policy annually to ensure it reflects the latest best practice guidelines and any evolving regulatory requirements. The Principles apply to all of our business partners, including but not limited to: finished goods suppliers, subcontractors, supporting facilities, raw material suppliers, non-stock suppliers, contractors, licensees and franchisees.

Since 2016, the Principles have explicitly addressed the risks of modern slavery. Incorporating the Principles into our contracts with business partners ensures that modern slavery provisions are also included. The Principles are overseen by Burberry’s Ethics Committee, chaired by our General Counsel, and overseen by our accountability and supply chain teams. They are enforced according to the Burberry Non-Compliance Policy, detailed below.

The principles include the Burberry Code of Ethical Business Principles, the Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and the Global Environmental Policy, as well as the following seven policies:

ETHICAL CODE OF TRADE CONDUCT

It outlines requirements that all of our business partners must comply with in relation to their own employees, contract workers and throughout their own supply chain. Among other things, the Code contains the following requirements: that employment is freely chosen, no child labor is used, freedom of association is respected and there is no harsh or inhuman treatment.

MIGRANT WORKERS POLICY

This serves in particular to protect workers who may be exposed to exploitation in the course of international migration. The policy contains requirements including, but not limited to, a ban on the retention of passports and similar documents and the imposition of agency fees. In FY2020/21, we updated this policy based on learnings from our partnership with the Issara Institute, an NGO specializing in recruitment trips for migrant workers in supply chains. We then shared this policy with business partners to provide more detailed guidance on how to implement the policy and adhere to the standards it contains.

HUMAN RIGHTS POLICY

Burberry’s Human Rights Policy sets out four key stakeholders – our employees, workers in our supply chain, our customers and our communities – and the processes we have put in place to protect and uphold human rights, including mechanisms to address any instances of potential violations. The Policy was developed with reference to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. We assess human rights impacts and regularly monitor working conditions both in our own operations and in our supply chain to ensure compliance with the policy. The policy was updated in fiscal year 2020/21.

CHILD LABOR AND YOUNG WORKERS POLICY

We prohibit all forms of child labor in our own operations and throughout our supply chain. In our Code of Conduct for Ethical Trading, we state that we will never use child labor and set out provisions for young workers.

Our Child Labor and Young Workers Policy expands on the Code of Conduct and provides standards of implementation, monitoring and remedial action to be followed by all business partners.

RESPONSIBLE PROCUREMENT POLICY

throughout the supply chain. The policy outlines certain prohibited sourcing regions, recognizing the risk of modern slavery and other labor issues. For example, the policy prohibits sourcing from certain countries including but not limited to Bangladesh, Pakistan and Cambodia.

The policy was last reviewed in fiscal year 2020/21.

PARTNER NON-COMPLIANCE POLICY

When violations of our standards and policies are identified, Burberry works with local partners to find solutions to address the non-compliance. If improvements are not made within a specified time or there is no willingness to address the issue, we may consider terminating a particular business relationship. The Policy is intended to allow Partners a reasonable time to remedy breaches of the Principles to minimize any potential adverse impact on workers’ livelihoods, always reserving the right to terminate contracts and take other legal action as appropriate to the type of violation.

INFECTION MANAGEMENT CONTROL POLICY

To support our business partners in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers, partners and visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, this policy sets out the minimum standards that Burberry is required to uphold from its business partners.

The policy includes infection controls such as social distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and cleaning programs to be followed on site. In addition, Burberry recognizes that there are many different countries within its supply chain, each with their own laws, and as such all Business Partners must ensure that in addition to complying with this Policy, they continue to comply with local regulations, laws and industry best practices.

In addition to the Principles, Burberry provides a range of resources and policies for employees relating to a variety of topics including personal conduct and whistleblowing. Burberry employees, contractors and temporary workers across all of our operations also have access to a confidential whistleblowing hotline, ensuring there is always a way to report issues when normal escalation channels are unavailable or restricted.

We continue to implement additional risk management for our global non-inventory supply chain to address higher risk areas such as: B. Labor suppliers and contractors to be more visible. Suppliers must take responsibility for preventing forced labour, bonded labor and human trafficking in their supply chain and certify that they, their affiliates, contractors or subcontractors do not engage in and have engaged in any form of modern slavery.

Compliance with the Principles is a prerequisite for doing business with Burberry. Compliance with the principles is included in contracts with suppliers. They sign a declaration of commitment in which, among other things, they confirm their commitment to the principles and their responsibility for implementing the principles within their own supply chains. We work with our business partners to encourage compliance, and we reserve the right to terminate our sourcing relationship with those who do not demonstrate a sufficient commitment to the Code or are in material breach of the Code. If a business partner is found to be engaging in modern slavery, we would first act to protect the welfare of the workers involved and then assist the business partner in their remediation process, including any action taken to identify and address root issues.

GUIDE

We continue to promote the management of risks of modern slavery inside and outside of Burberry.

We have a global responsibility team consisting of over 30 specialists in key locations around the world. Although ethical trade activities are coordinated by our accountability team, supply chain labor standards are owned by our supply chain and procurement teams. Burberry employees who are responsible for supply chain partner relationships and sourcing also have personal KPIs related to labor conditions and recognize the potential impact of fair purchasing practices on labor conditions across our supply chain.

Our ethical trading program is supported and overseen internally by a number of management committees. The program aims to ensure that the potential risks to labor and human rights are taken into account at all appropriate levels and in all areas of the company. Policies related to human rights are reviewed and approved by the company’s Ethics Committee. If labor or human rights risks are identified, the Vice President, Corporate Responsibility will report such matters to the Group’s Ethics Committee as well as to the Group’s Risk Committee, which meets at least three times a year. The Risk Committee is chaired by the Chief Operating and Financial Officer, who sits on the Board of Burberry Group plc. The Risk Committee reports to the Group Audit Committee, which is chaired by an independent non-executive director.

In addition, our social responsibility and sustainability strategies are reviewed by the Sustainability Committee, co-chaired by the CEO and CFO/COO. The CEO is also a member of the Fashion Pact Steering Committee, while the CFO/COO is also a member of the Leadership Network for the Accounting for Sustainability Initiative (A4S), the Sustainable Market Initiative and the N.10 Business Council. Goals and progress on social responsibility and human rights issues are reviewed by our Impact Forum, composed of independent external experts who play the role of “critical friends”. The governance structure diagram below shows the reporting lines of each committee.

In October 2017, Burberry joined some of the UK’s largest companies as a founding member of the Business Against Slavery Forum. Since then, our accountability team has been attending the forum’s quarterly meetings and ad hoc workshops. The forum is convened by the UK Home Office and member companies share information, best practice and government action to help companies identify, combat and prevent slavery in their supply chains.

DUE DILIGENCE AND EVALUATION OF OUR SUPPLY CHAIN

Since 2004, we have implemented a program to monitor labor conditions in our product supply chains and to protect workers employed there.

Monitoring and verification activities are conducted in our supply chains for finished products and key raw materials to support compliance with the Principles. To ensure our supply chain mapping stays current, we operate a rigorous approval process and periodically conduct a transparency analysis with our suppliers and trading teams. Following this analysis, we conduct an assessment to identify any new or emerging risk areas.

New raw material suppliers must confirm that they adhere to the Principles and comply with applicable local laws. As early as the onboarding phase, they must also agree that we can visit and assess their own compliance and that of their suppliers at any time. Before a new supplier is approved to participate in the Burberry supply chain, it is subject to a risk assessment for compliance with social standards and any evidence of forced labour, bonded labor or human trafficking. Alle zwei Jahre führen wir eine Menschenrechtsfolgenabschätzung (Human Rights Impact Assessment, HRIA) unserer Betriebe und Aktivitäten sowie der unserer erweiterten Lieferkette durch. Wenn ein Zwangsarbeitsrisiko identifiziert wird, werden ethische Handelsbewertungen von unseren internen Teams oder von einer lokalen NGO durchgeführt, wenn lokales Fachwissen erforderlich ist, um alle arbeitsrechtlichen Probleme und die erforderlichen Abhilfemaßnahmen zu identifizieren.

In relation to worker voice, we have continued to sponsor our hotlines, which remain a key tool to capture workers’ needs. Over the last year, we have also expanded the hotlines reach to new countries. As our supply chain evolves, we’ll continue to monitor that our hotline reach remains relevant and workers in the geographies we operate in are provided with adequate tools to make their voice heard, raise any concerns and seek support. Finally, in response to modern slavery risks, we monitor that our policies remain relevant, we strictly implement our due diligence process at onboarding and we keep refining our audit tools. We also conduct training for both internal teams and supply chain partners to raise awareness and provide tools to prevent and mitigate this risk.

In addition, our FY 2020-21 HRIA highlighted increased risk for workers in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to workers’ health and wellbeing. In response to this, the Burberry Responsibility team has supported supply chain partners through the challenges presented by the pandemic by communicating Burberry’s Infection Control Management Policy, training on safe work environments and mental health, conducting onsite visits as well as remote engagement activities to assess risks and provide guidance.

In FY 2021/22, we also continued to explore and assess risks associated with raw material commodities at their source. We have been working with our raw material suppliers to further map and assess potential risk areas. As part of the assessment we engaged with our supply chain partners to better understand the dynamics of their sourcing and supply chains.

We introduced new raw material and traceability targets in FY 2021/22 to support and complement human rights risk mitigation throughout our supply chain through certification and we are currently on track to achieve these ambitious 2025 targets.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT AND WORKER VOICE

During Ethical Trading audits and as part of our broader responsibility programme, we conduct interviews with relevant stakeholder groups and workers to better understand their needs and perceptions, while gathering insights into the direct and indirect impacts of our business and developing focused mitigation plans where required.

We also provide grievance mechanisms for our global employees, as well as confidential hotlines run by NGOs for workers in our supply chain which aim to address workers’ complaints, providing consulting services and psychological support. During FY 2021/22, Burberry-sponsored hotlines received 435 calls, covering 36 factories and over 19,000 workers. Calls and their resolution have been monitored closely by our Responsibility team.

Monitoring alone does not drive improvements in labour conditions and therefore we have several other programmes in place to support our supply chain partners to improve labour conditions.

WORKER GRIEVANCE MECHANISM

Labour rights issues can include inadequate access to remedy. Where this occurs, we work with local NGOs to establish a hotline to share information with workers on their labour rights, create a mechanism to report grievances and provide psychological support.

The effectiveness of the hotline is frequently reviewed by our Responsibility team and this year we extended the hotline to cover over 19,000 workers within our supply chain. During FY 2021/21, 435 calls (15 complaints, 409 consulting requests and 11 psychological support requests) were received. Resolutions were monitored closely by our local Responsibility teams.

We continue to review access to remedy and we will extend the hotline where required, prioritising suppliers with migrant workers.

WORKER WELLBEING

We continue to work on programmes to capture comments and grievances from workers in our supply chain globally and address issues raised.

Based on previous years’ experience and supply chain feedback, we have enhanced the tool developed with Oxfam to measure worker wellbeing in our supply chain and capture comments and feedback from workers. In FY 2021/22 we reached over 3,300 workers across 30 facilities globally.

The results have been used to develop specific action plans for each factory. Different needs have emerged according to the factories’ geographies and the improvement actions span from the development of stronger HR management systems, to worker and supervisor training programmes to initiatives to promote internal dialogue. For instance, some finished goods facilities have implemented clearer hiring policies and procedures while others have set up new Wellbeing Committees where Management and Workers’ representatives can discuss emerging needs and identify joint solutions on a regular basis.

In the coming year, we will work to further expand the number of workers involved in the programme, whilst also supporting the factories with the successful implementation of their action plans. The positive impact of the implemented actions will be monitored by running our wellbeing measurement tool across selected facilities.

CHAMPIONING DIVERSITY AND ENSURING INCLUSIVITY

At Burberry, our global Diversity and Inclusion strategy is focused on valuing and embracing differences and creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, has a voice and can reach their full potential. We know that when this happens, our colleagues are more engaged, committed and effective in driving results and we make a more meaningful contribution to the world around us.

To help achieve our diversity and inclusion goals, our dedicated Global Diversity and Inclusion team works with colleagues across the business, including our senior leadership teams, the broader Human Resources team and our advisory networks, with a focus on four strategic pillars:

attracting and retaining diverse top talent

fostering an open and inclusive culture

educating and raising awareness

implementing a global approach

D&I is also a key focus for our supply chain. Last year we reviewed and updated our Migrant Worker Policy to strengthen our guidance on the repayment of recruitment fees and better support our partners in implementing and upholding an ethical recruitment journey within the supply chain and we keep monitoring the policy implementation.

We have mapped particular risk areas and are working closely with local expert organisations and our suppliers to develop roadmaps to mitigate risk to domestic and international migrant workers in key supply chain locations.

In FY 2019/20, we introduced an inclusivity programme in Italy with a third-party communication agency and a cultural mediators association to increase vulnerable workers’ access to local institutions and public services. The overall aim of the programme was to empower workers, thereby reducing risk of modern slavery and in the long-term, having a positive impact on social inclusion. This programme, together with our onsite audits, has helped us to identify the need to provide migrant workers with a dedicated tool to ask for guidance and support. In the next financial year we will be focusing our efforts on evolving our approach to respond to this opportunity and better support migrant workers in our supply chain.

We will continue to strengthen our commitment by continuously reviewing our programmes and taking action where needed.

TRAINING & RESOURCES

Our Responsibility team includes specialists in labour and human rights and modern slavery. Burberry employees are introduced to Burberry’s responsibility policies and programmes during their induction training to ensure a general understanding of Burberry’s responsibilities in this area.

BURBERRY INTERNAL TEAMS TRAINING

In FY 2016/17, we developed our first bespoke modern slavery and labour rights training programme for our internal teams and supply chain partners, informed by Burberry’s Human Rights Impact Assessment and in collaboration with the ethical trade, human rights and labour standards consultancy Impactt. In FY 2021/22, over 120 members of our internal supply chain, sourcing, internal manufacturing and product teams received either introductory or refresher training. The targeted training helps those who have close contact with our extended supply chain to be familiar with the risk areas, likely indications of human rights abuses (including instances of modern slavery) and possible actions to take if an incident of modern slavery is identified. In previous years, we also trained members of our human resources, health and safety, construction and fulfilment teams on modern slavery, how to identify it and appropriate actions to take. A refresher training will be organised again next year. This training has helped embed respect for human rights and a policy of zero tolerance for modern slavery throughout the business.

We regularly review training needs across our business operations to ensure all relevant employees are included. In FY2022/23 we will create new online resources and continue to conduct trainings to reach a wider audience of employees and further embed awareness and risk mitigation into our culture.

SUPPLY CHAIN TRAINING

Since FY 2016/2017, we have been training our supply chain partners, including vendors and key raw material suppliers, on understanding, identifying and managing modern slavery risks. In FY 2018/19, our UK Responsibility team completed an “Investigative Interviewing Skills” course developed and delivered by the Gangmasters Labour Abuse Authority and Stronger Together.

The skills learned have been used to improve our Ethical Trading Audit methodology and have helped to provide insight when working with our regional teams. In addition, since the end of 2019 the Burberry EMEIA Responsibility team has collaborated with partners with cultural integration expertise to further strengthen our due diligence activities in multi- cultural environments.

In line with the commitment we made in FY 2020/21, this year’s training has reached our key global product supply vendors and raw material suppliers covering 80% of our production. They have attended a three hour training session on modern slavery identification and management within their own operations and extended supply chain. All training participants have been tasked with the development of action plans to embed modern slavery awareness and prevention within their companies.

As part of our broader supply chain training programme, we also delivered a “Train the Trainer” course to 17 key finished goods vendors in Italy, one of our primary sourcing countries, to support them in cascading the modern slavery training within their company and to their own supply chain partners.

As part of the training objectives, we stressed that any instance of modern slavery is not tolerated and will be addressed in line with our partner non-compliance policy. If a suspected case of modern slavery emerges, supply chain partners have been trained to act in the first instance to ensure the safety of the persons at risk and Burberry will support them in identifying the most appropriate course of action.

During FY 2022/23 we will continue to monitor the implementation of our suppliers action plans. Moreover, we will continue to deliver annual modern slavery training to our key finished goods vendors and raw material suppliers to ensure that our main suppliers are well equipped to understand and address this topic and their attention remains high.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)

We monitor the KPIs set out below on an ongoing basis. These KPIs help us ensure the effectiveness of our efforts to address modern slavery risks and are continually reviewed.

BURBERRY INTERNAL TEAMS TRAINING

The Burberry Responsibility team trains key internal teams working with our business and product supply chains. This includes sourcing, supply chain and logistics, product development, HR, legal, construction, procurement and workplace services.

In FY 2021/22, the supply chain, sourcing and product teams received either introductory or refresher training to better understand forced labour indicators and raise awareness of modern slavery risks within our business operations and supply chain.

SUPPLY CHAIN TRAINING

We regularly train finished goods suppliers, their key subcontractors and key raw material suppliers on the identification of modern slavery and building systems to prevent the occurrence of modern slavery

WORKER VOICE

We continue to implement initiatives to strengthen workers’ access to information and the ability to raise grievances as well as to measure worker wellbeing.

During FY 2021/22, Burberry’s worker hotline received 435 calls, categorised as 15 complaints, 409 consulting requests and 11 psychological support requests.

We also surveyed approximately 3,300 workers across 30 facilities globally to build a better understanding of workers’ wellbeing and identify opportunities for improvement. In FY2020/21 we introduced a communication training programme in two European production facilities and further expanded it in FY 2021/22 to two additional suppliers where a need was identified. The aim of the programme was to build communication skills and improve interaction between workers, supervisors and factory management. As a result, the facilities introduced stronger worker consultation and feedback mechanisms, improving internal dialogue. We continued to evolve our approach to workers’ wellbeing to better capture and measure key wellbeing dimensions and more effectively address worker priorities. Our key vendors were consulted to inform the review of the methodology and ensure their input and suggestions were taken into account.

In FY 2022/23, we’ll further expand the tool reach and monitor the results of our updated wellbeing model as well as continue gathering feedback from our supply chain partners. This will allow us to identify any further opportunity for improvement or any needs for targeted action.

AUDITS & ASSESSMENTS

In FY 2021/22, we conducted 601 ethical trading audits and 28 engagement activities. The majority of these activities were conducted by our internal Responsibility team who endeavour to build trust in our ongoing partnerships and drive continuous improvement.

Since the start of the global pandemic in March 2020, the Responsibility team has remained in close contact with supply chain partners by developing a blended physical and virtual ethical trade auditing system. Over FY 2021/22, we have maintained this approach to continue protecting the health and safety of our own as well as supply chain partners employees. However, when and where the circumstances have allowed, we have given preference to onsite monitoring activities as these allow to better capture any challenge and provide more effective support.

The audit and assessment programme covers all our finished goods facilities and their subcontractor supply chains as well as raw material suppliers covering over 40% of our finished products.

In early 2020, in an area of our supply chain where we identified a group of migrant workers paying fees during a complex recruitment journey, we started working with a local NGO, Issara Institute, and two suppliers who operate four facilities to build worker voice and remediate any fees paid by existing workers as well as workers that had since left their employment.

With remediation work now completed, in FY 2022/23 we will continue to focus on implementing measures for an ethical recruitment route for migrant workers and continue collaborating with our supply chain partners to support them in abiding by the designed guidelines. Facilities where domestic and international migrant workers are employed remain a key focus area.

LOOKING AHEAD

We continue to strengthen the breadth and depth of our human rights due diligence and Ethical Trading Programme as well as implement the action plans resulting from our FY 2020/21 Human Rights Impact Assessment. A key focus has been on our upstream raw materials supply chain and engaging with key certification bodies to ensure human rights due diligence is conducted and embedded within certification standards.

Over the next year we’ll increase our efforts to strengthen our supply chain traceability, in line with our 2025 commitments. We believe that our focus on transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain will further strengthen our ability to identify modern slavery risks and address any new challenge that might emerge.

In addition, we will continue to support our supply chain partners through challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and monitor potential emerging risks and impacts in our extended supply chain.

Finally, our commitment to become Climate Positive by 2040 will allow us to not only protect the environment but also the communities that live within it. We aim at building a model that allows both the environment and people to thrive, reducing human rights violations and modern slavery risks

How to pronounce Burberry

Burberry is pronounced like: BUR-BUH-REE.

The year is 1856. 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, son of a farmer and a grocer and a former draper’s apprentice, opens a small shop in Basingstoke, England. Thomas focuses on outdoor clothing designed to protect his customers from the British weather.

The business prospered and in 1879 Thomas invented gabardine, a waterproof yet breathable fabric that would revolutionize rainwear. He patents the fabric and a few years later opens his first shop in London, at 30 Haymarket.

In 1893 the discoverer Dr. Fritjof Nansen wore a gabardine coat on his expedition to the Arctic Circle. He is just the first of many: Air Commodore Edward Maitland will wear gabardine to travel from the Crystal Palace to Russia in a hot air balloon, as will Roald Amundsent, the first man to reach the South Pole, and George Mallory, who is attempting to climb the Mount Everest in 1924.

The trench coat

In 1912, Thomas patented the Tielocken coat, a functional garment made entirely of gabardine, with a belt at the waist and no buttons. The tie curl coat is the predecessor of the trench coat. The latter emerged a few years later as a uniform for the British Army during World War I, which, as the name suggests, was worn in the trenches.

However, the trench coat is quickly becoming an iconic piece of clothing, popular with the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Versatile and stylish, the trench coat was also worn by the US Army during World War II.

The unmistakable check pattern, which we immediately associate with the label today, originated as a lining for trench coats in the 1920s. In 1967, Jacqueline Dillemman, a buyer at the label’s Paris store, removed the checked lining from a coat and used it to pack luggage. Thus the iconic check accessory was born!

Who owns Burberry?

After the founder’s death in 1926, his sons Arthur and Thomas took over the company. Burberry was an independent family business until 1955 when it was sold to Great Universal Stores (CIS). In 2005, GUS distributed its stake to its shareholders. Today Burberry is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Lindsell Train Limited is the largest shareholder.

In 2018, Riccardo Tisci was appointed as the brand’s creative director, replacing Christopher Bailey. To both celebrate its roots and refresh the label, Tisci replaced the famous Burberry Equestrian Knight with a new, minimalist logo and introduced a new monogram pattern featuring the founder’s initials (TB).

The brand is headquartered in London, Westminster.

The label owns a factory in Scandicci, near Florence, Italy, where most of Burberry’s items are made, including menswear, womenswear and leather goods.

Burberry also has two factories in the UK: Castleford Mill and Keighley Mill. This is where the check lining fabrics and the Heritage trench coat are made, as well as some fabrics for accessories such as shoes and bags.

Burberry cashmere scarves are made in Scotland at the historic mills of Elgin and Ayr. Each scarf is worked by 18 artisans and goes through 30 different production steps.
