Julius Caesar: Important Quotes Explained

He was my friend, faithful and just to me.

But Brutus says he was ambitious

And Brutus is an honorable man.

. . .

When the poor wept, Caesar wept.

. . .

But Brutus says he’s ambitious

And Brutus is an honorable man.

. . .

Three times I gave him a royal crown,

Which he refused three times. Was that ambition?

But Brutus says he’s ambitious

And surely he is an honorable man. (III.ii. 82–96)

Antony speaks these lines in his eulogy for Caesar in Act III, Scene ii. He has asked Brutus for permission to deliver the speech, and Brutus foolishly grants him the privilege, believing that the image gain he and the conspirators will receive for this act of seeming magnanimity will outweigh any damage Antony’s words do could. Unfortunately for the conspirators, Antony’s speech is a rhetorical tour de force that undermines the conspirators, although it appears deferential to them. This clever strategy is reminiscent of the previous scene (III.i), in which Antony shook hands with each of the murderers in turn, smearing Caesar’s blood under them all; While appearing to make a gesture of reconciliation, he quietly marked them all as guilty. In both handshake and speech, Antony condemns the killers while seemingly showing respect and displaying his consummate skill as a politician and rhetorician.

Speech draws much of its power from repetition. Each time Antony quotes Brutus’ claim that Caesar was “ambitious,” the claim loses strength and credibility. Similarly, each time Antony declares how “honorable” a man is to Brutus, the phrase takes on an increasingly sarcastic tone, until by the end of the speech its meaning has been completely reversed. The speech convinces the crowd and turns public opinion against the conspirators; When Antony reads Caesar’s will aloud moments later, the dead Caesar’s words are echoed by Antony’s to arouse the masses against the injustice of the assassination.

Speech: “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me…

(from Julius Caesar, spoken by Marc Antony)

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ear;

I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

The evil that people do lives after them;

The good are often buried with their bones;

So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus

Told you Caesar was ambitious:

If it were, it would be a grave mistake

And Caesar hardly answered that.

Here, with the permission of Brutus and the others—

For Brutus is an honorable man;

So are they all, all honorable men –

I’m coming to speak at Caesar’s funeral.

He was my friend, faithful and just to me:

But Brutus says he was ambitious;

And Brutus is an honorable man.

He brought many prisoners to Rome

Whose ransoms filled the general coffers:

Did that seem ambitious to Caesar?

When the poor wept, Caesar wept:

Ambition should be stricter:

But Brutus says he was ambitious;

And Brutus is an honorable man.

You all saw that at Lupercal

Three times I gave him a royal crown,

What he refused three times: Was that ambition?

But Brutus says he was ambitious;

And sure, he’s an honorable man.

I speak not to refute what Brutus said,

But here I shall speak what I know.

You all loved him once, not without reason:

What cause prevents you from mourning for him?

O court! you fled to wild animals,

And men have lost their minds. bear with me;

My heart is there with Caesar in the coffin,
