New York-based psychotherapist Kathryn Smerling, PhD, LCSW said she’s witnessed some of the negative effects of TikTok in her work with children and adolescents, particularly when it comes to their attention span.

“Even in my office, they can’t stay focused without looking at their phones,” she told Verywell.

And while completely banning kids from using the app isn’t necessarily a realistic or productive option, Smerling said parents who might want to protect their kids from “TikTok Brain” should be open with their kids about the potential harms and them should encourage them to fill their time with a range of different activities.

Parents can also help their kids use TikTok’s time management tool, which allows users to choose a time cap that can be locked behind a four-digit passcode.

We Tested the 5 Best TikTok Algorithm Theories So You Don’t Have To

In our three months on TikTok, we’ve gained over 10,000 followers and 150,000 likes. I explain the top five algorithm theories and how they apply to us.

At Kapwing, we’ve seen and tested many of these theories in our year of using TikTok as a business. Our account has grown to nearly 17,000 followers and 162,000 likes. We got almost 10% of those views in the first week.

A quick disclaimer: there is no standalone hack to go viral. The only way to build an audience on TikTok is with legitimately funny, relatable, engaging, and/or informative content. No amount of tricks will help if your videos don’t reach people. However, understanding the quality of different algorithm theories can help ensure good content gets shared more widely.

Here are the main theories and our takeaways for each.

1. Artificial intelligence watches videos and decides your fate

Most social media platforms try to intercept graphic or copyrighted content with an automated filter. People have hypothesized that TikTok’s filter does more than catch copyrighted content — it can determine which videos go viral.

According to the theory, the AI ​​has learned over time that people like things that are “attractive” and “familiar,” so it reinforces videos with “attractive” and “familiar” people, but withholds videos that might be “unwanted.” The latter is a serious concern for both aspiring creators and freedom of expression. TikTok has been exposed for asking its human moderators to discriminate in the past… could it have incorporated those preferences into machine vision?

According to our observations (at least in the USA), automated vision no longer plays a major role. Yes, some of our top performing videos have featured our female peers, Tesla Cybertruck footage and a celebrity montage. But they’re also objectively among the best videos we’ve made. My For You page is now showing me a diverse collection of creators in all sorts of places, suggesting the filter is probably more of a quality catch now that will get you to the ~600 view mark. To overcome that, it’s more about user interaction.

Some of my videos were removed by people after the explosion… but they got past the machine!

What is our advice to pass the quality check? Compare your video resolution and original sound volume with popular videos. This is especially important for Android users. For a while I used my Samsung to record and edit in TikTok and the videos came out super grainy. It turns out that TikTok, Snapchat and other apps don’t optimize their in-app camera for every Android device (the main reason people think Android cameras are so bad). These videos were rarely shown to more than 200 people. Now I always record with my native camera app, edit it with Kapwings Studio and make sure our video is relatively loud and we always get at least 600 views.

Conclusion: The machine vision theory seems exaggerated. Your video may still be removed by human moderators for unknown reasons after it gains momentum, but TikTok seems to be improving this issue as well. Overall – try to remember that most people like simplicity. Content for a diverse audience needs to be instantly engaging and easy to understand. And TikTok is still ruled by Gen Z, so they’ll be drawn to videos by people their own age.

Every viral video starts its life with test batches from TikTok users. If the current group of users interacts sufficiently with your video, it will be shown to a larger group next time, and so on. What do you need to reach the next level? There’s some speculation, but everyone seems to agree with @kingkhieu on the metrics:

Rewatching and sharing videos is the holy grail. Comments help with your score and are a good indication that a video is engaging. Likes don’t really matter—but a 1:5 like-to-watch ratio almost never fails.

Of course, about half the videos you see on “For You” use a trick to get that repeat. Here are a few things you can try:

Do something physically intense and unexpected in the video

Create a “How did you do that?” Moment with creative editing

Use quick cuts between shots or write a chunk of text that quickly disappears

Use a tone associated with a punchline/turn

Try to create a seamless, satisfying loop

Interestingly, 8 of our top 10 most popular videos didn’t use TikTok sounds… and we paid minimal attention to hashtags. Yes, trending sounds make viewers feel instantly recognized. The right hashtags can help get your videos noticed by a focused audience. But your content needs to stand out from the millions of others that are being created. Every time we’ve tried to fit our product into a trend, it’s gone badly, so there’s more to it than that.

If a video “flops,” you’ve definitely thought about deleting and reposting it. There are pros and cons to attempting a repost. The Pros: You can improve the video creatively and try another group of first-time reviewers. The cons: It might get even fewer views, and you might miss out on a “delayed blast,” a phenomenon I’ll analyze later. We generally repost when a video has at least 10% likes and there is an obvious way to improve it; Otherwise just leave it or delete it permanently.

The Takeaway: This is real. Optimize your videos for rewatching, focus on quality content instead of following trends, and repost when a video shows promise.

3. Consistent content attracts followers

TikTok’s For You page brings you an amazing range of curated content. But successful TikTokers stick to a primary theme, format, or theme; They don’t publish many different types of content. People will only follow you if they believe your next video will be as good as the one that first discovered you and has consistent formats that communicate your style or brand.

Every account I follow makes their own style of video. Some of my favorites are @zachking, @qpark and @logicalfinance. @koriee_m uses the same song in almost every video, and it’s hilarious. “Crunk Ain’t Dead” has been used in over 25,000 videos; the acquisition has clearly paid off for him.

It’s really hard to find a popular account anywhere on TikTok that doesn’t specialize in something. If you’re looking for ideas, we found that many popular YouTubers have adopted one of these themes:

Responding to a content pipeline that is constantly updated (trending songs, news, memes, social media interactions, etc.)

Reposting content created for other social platforms

Building on previous videos, creating a narrative for you to follow

For companies: Bring in your product creatively

Can it be too late to switch your account? Maybe. Some advice warns that your first few videos will forever determine your account’s performance (so if they’re duds, you should delete the account and try again). Well, our first videos weren’t that great and we went from ~300 to ~800 average views in the first round – with our most popular videos being posted recently. Nothing crazy, but enough to say that the reach of the first round on any video seems to be more of a function of your follower count.

The bottom line: Consistent content probably doesn’t “play off the algorithm”. However, it gives people a much bigger reason to follow you. So what’s the difference?

4. TikTok is pumping new views to lure you back

This theory, well described by user @jeanjacketsb, suggests that TikTok can use video views to inspire casual creators and post consistently. Imagine…

You’ve had some success with the app and post regularly. If you’re frustrated that videos aren’t performing well, post less. Then one morning you suddenly sign up to thousands of new notifications. An infamous (and seemingly random) “delayed explosion”. So you get excited and start posting again… and the cycle continues.

One level down: That would explain why above-average dance videos keep popping up on For You. It’s a win-win-win situation for TikTok. A popular dance video floods the mediocre YouTuber with likes, lowering the perceived barrier to fame for new users and getting outsiders talking about the platform.

This theory caught my attention because the very phenomenon it describes happened to us, whether by accident or not. We made our first viral video in November and then posted almost daily until December with no success. While we were taking a TikTok break for the holidays, a video of the pen spinning racked up over 50,000 views in a matter of days. Another video showing celebrities wearing Kapwing reached around 25,000. They only had a few thousand in the first few weeks, so TikTok had magically “revived” the videos.

To test this theory, we tried again in January to “ghost” the app, but to no avail. We found no correlation between video engagement and our TikTok screen time. TikTok will likely lure you back once or twice, but once you’re big enough, success depends on your content. Small creators often notice this, while popular creators swear that consistent posting is best.

Bottom line: As a new YouTuber, you might be able to suddenly stop posting after your first big video so it gets more views, but it’s not a sustainable growth strategy. Just like other platforms, frequent posting seems tried and tested for large accounts.

5. The algorithm suppresses unverified brands or companies

There are three types of companies that do well on TikTok: established brands that recycle content from other platforms (NBA, Calvin Klein), established brands that strive for native content (Washington Post, Chipotle), and smaller brands that that present a fun visual and/or physical product (Procreate, Redbubble). Most of them are verified and some of them show ads.

As a tech startup with many different use cases, we don’t really fit into any of those categories. However, we knew that Kapwing is a perfect product for medium-sized TikTok creators. We just had to:

1. Post Good Content: Make videos that people have viewed and

2. Attribute wins: Prove that some of these people started using our site.

Both turned out to be quite difficult!

For Goal #1, we asked ourselves: Is TikTok throttling corporate videos like other social platforms are doing? It’s easy for them to identify companies and teams — if you have multiple accounts on one device, signed in on multiple devices, or have analytics enabled, those are dead giveaways. So chances are you’ll eventually relent and pay for the exposure if you have to, right?

This is hard for us to confirm, but we know that TikTok has made it difficult to define the business impact of your account. Their analytics page is pretty basic and they didn’t have a “link in bio” until recently. We know that 20,000 people visited our profile in January, but we couldn’t tell how many of those people were actually interested in our product (instead of just browsing). That may have changed now that site linking is universal, but it takes another big video to know for sure.

Link in bio should make TikTok a more viable platform for serious brands and developers.

Bottom Line: We have no hard evidence that we are being oppressed as a company. The clicks we get on our website are more valuable to us than views or likes, so we determine success based on the results of our next videos. Personally, I’ve never been tempted to leave TikTok to visit a website or download an app… but perhaps Kapwing’s relevance and an accessible link will be enough for some.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that some of these algorithm theories have helped creators grow on TikTok, but most of TikTok’s “secrets” are really just guidelines for creating interesting and shareable content. It’s no coincidence that effective tips for “playing the algorithm” usually just help you make better creative decisions.

Looking back, I wish we’d spent more time focusing on the rough details of making a great video instead of delving into algorithm hacks. Storyboarding, finding the right take, hiring good “actors”, tightening up the cuts: all of this would have made our creation process more efficient and the end product more realistic.

If you’re just starting out on TikTok, I’d recommend saving the algorithm hacks until you get thousands of views consistently. In the five months I’ve been using the app personally, the amount of quality content has grown exponentially. The barrier to entry is growing every day. Making a good TikTok and finding a way to make better and better TikTok is a challenge in itself.

After that inevitable flopped post, ask yourself: Was that because I didn’t use the right hashtags, or because it’s a sore thumb in people’s feeds? What can you do to feel more truly a part of the app culture? We’ll have to do a lot of this ourselves, but I bet you’ll see better results. 🙂
