This picture shows how to smooth the wooden handle with a sharp obsidian “chip”. The Arizona Obsidian in this image is only able to smooth out part of the handle before chipping or having to use another edge to keep it sharp enough and strong enough to create the super smooth areas. Here I am showing how smooth the obsidian makes the wood for demonstration purposes (FYI the demo area is actually under tape after the spring is connected to the handle.
TIP: Obsidian is easy to find in certain locations throughout Arizona. If you are not in a place to collect obsidian, consider buying your obsidian from an Arizona source to support the Arizona Rock Hunting Activities.

Car design company Pininfarina has created an inkless pen with a metal tip that writes without ever emptying.
What if you could have a writing instrument that drew a line like a graphite pencil but in permanent, non-smearing ink like a ballpoint pen? Car design company Pininfarina, which has worked with the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat, Peugeot and Alfa Romeo, unveiled something similar at the global stationery fair Paperworld in Frankfurt.
The 4.EVER Pininfarina Cambiano is a luxurious looking, tapered affair with a machined aluminum barrel inlaid with wood bearing the company’s logo. But the barrel itself is solid, not hollow: instead of ink, it has a metal alloy tip called “Ethergraph” that the company says writes forever.
We’re not exactly sure what Ethergraph is, but it sounds awfully similar to a pen released by Vat19 in 2010. “The Inkless Metal Beta Pen features a special metal alloy tip,” reads Vat19’s description. “As you write, tiny amounts of this metal are deposited on the page. The silvery marks may resemble pencil, but they are permanent and smudge-proof.”
Each pen is sold with a “stone paper” notebook, an environmentally friendly, water-resistant and durable paper made from stone flour. Pininfarina hasn’t revealed the price of its new pen, but given the prices of its fountain pens, we can’t imagine it will be particularly affordable.

Lift the open end of the pen case up to your lips. Hold a lighter up to the metal tip and ignite it by flicking it. Inhale as the tobacco starts to burn to pull the smoke through the case. Release the lighter and put the pen down to enjoy the smoke before exhaling it out.

If you want to make a whistle out of a ballpoint pen, first find a metal ballpoint pen with a removable cartridge and a metal tip. Next, unscrew the metal tip and slide it off. Then pry off the bottom cap and remove the ink cartridge. When the cartridge is empty, turn the metal tip upside down and insert it into the opening of the pen. Hold the housing with your non-dominant hand and press the outer edge of the metal tip with your other index finger or thumb until it is secure. This will be the bowl of the whistle. You can attach a cigarette filter to the opening at the other end if you prefer a less harsh smoke. Otherwise, this whistle is ready to use! For tips on smoking from your new pipe, read on!

How to make a Folded Pen
Folded pen
The pen I used for the October letter series is actually one of my own handmade folded pens.
Put simply, a folded pen is a pen with a tip made out of a piece of metal that is folded and bent on one side. The fold itself acts as an ink reservoir.
With a folded pen we can achieve some really precise, straight and sharp strokes, as well as ultra-thin and ultra-broad strokes. The folded ballpoint pen can be made in many sizes and shapes and can therefore produce a variety of different strokes. You can create some wild and dramatic effects and by adjusting your angle you can create some great ink splashes.
The folded pen uses a lot of ink and it is important to use heavy paper. I prefer to use watercolor paper for this type of pen.
Don’t forget to use liquid watercolor with your folded and ruling pens. The colors will really pop due to the high amount of ink.
