Why reflective window films don’t work at night

Before we explore the different options you have, let’s talk more about reflective window films and why they don’t work at night. First of all, even untreated glass reflects some light, but none can achieve a higher level of privacy without some form of window film. Reflective window film reflects sunlight and other outside lights like a mirror, allowing your neighbors or passers-by to see their own reflection instead of what’s inside your home.

Because reflective window film is still translucent, it needs to be lighter outside than inside the room the film is protecting. Daylight is brighter than your indoor lights, which is why it works during the day. However, this is not the case at night. Decorative window film is a popular choice for both home and commercial window tinting. In commercial environments, we often see it installed in conference rooms and private offices where privacy and confidentiality are priorities. Blackout film for windows

Situation: You need absolute protection of your privacy around the clock and do not want to see in or out day or night

Blackout film is a kind of decorative window film that completely blocks light entering and exiting, which is different from most decorative window films. While most decorative window films block people from seeing in and out, they still let in some light. In addition to blackout film, Solar Art also carries whiteout window film, which has similar effects to blackout film. While some rooms, like garages or storage rooms, benefit from blackout sheeting, it may not be ideal for homeowners who want to see out of their windows in the first place.

Perforated window film

Situation: You want to prevent people from looking in, and changing the look of your windows is no problem

If you are unfamiliar with perforated window film, it is an opaque window film that is black on the inside and can be colored or white on the outside. Perforated window film is densely packed and has millimeter-sized perforations (or holes) that allow light to pass through. This creates the effect of a solid (usually white) window for your neighbors while still allowing you to see outside.

We typically see perforated window films installed in commercial spaces such as shop fronts and rarely in homes. Businesses often have an image printed on the perforated window film that not only looks good but can even advertise your business.

With perforated window film, your view of the outside is blurred, but you can see more than passers-by can see in. Remember that perforated window film is not reflective or translucent, so color becomes important. Perforated window film is great if you’re not interested in changing the exterior aesthetic or want to add a pop of color and create privacy.

Casper camouflage film

Situation: You want to watch TV privately or hold private and confidential meetings

It increases privacy in the sense that it protects LED screens from prying eyes, but people will still be able to see everything else in the room.

Other privacy options than window film

So far we’ve only talked about various window film options to help you increase privacy, but there are other options to choose from. One of the options is interior lighting. Installing dimmer switches and focused task lights, rather than filling your entire space with light, will help reduce onlooker insight. In combination with window films with a stronger tint, you can first achieve a certain level of privacy at night simply by limiting how much light passes through your glass in the first place (which will also affect your light levels during the day). Upgrading your lighting systems to dimmers can be expensive, time consuming and deprive you of daytime views, which is something to keep in mind when figuring out which option works best for you.

When installing dimmer switches is not an option, blinds and blinds are a valid and practical solution to the nighttime privacy problem. No light can enter or exit and they are easily adjustable at any time of the day or night. If you’ve searched the internet for information on how to put net curtains on PVC windows, you may have gotten to the point where you think about just leaving the house open for all the neighbors to look in and drop the nets all together. But it’s ok, we can help.

Due to the large areas of glass that uPVC can support, many windows seem to be too large to fit netting into the uPVC frame without using hooks and drills, and most people don’t want to damage that. A good option here is to use picture hooks over the frame and some non-nail glue to attach the hooks over the window. You can also use hooks down the middle of the wire that the mesh runs over to prevent it from bending in the middle.

Extending poles are another option, as both ends of the pole push into the walls on the side of your window to support the hanging shade. If you buy a pole, you must choose one that is 1-2 cm larger than the window so that the tension is great enough for the pole to stay up. To put on the net, simply detach the end of the pole and thread it through, but don’t start cleaning up just yet. Attach one end of the rod first, then the other, and then spread and gather the mesh until it looks just how you want it. For larger windows, you may find that spring-loaded poles have higher tension to better support the mesh.

If you have a meticulous eye and a steady hand you may be able to use right angle hooks to screw into the frame. The key here is to make sure they don’t penetrate far enough to cause damage, which is why you need the right person for the job! You can then place a pole on the hooks to hold up your nets and the curtain will ensure the hooks are not visible.

There are a few brands of PVC windows that avoid all of these problems by coming with curtain rods already glued to the frame. So if you know nets are something you always want, this is definitely an option that will tick the job off your list instead of giving you more to do.

Which side of the blackout fabric faces the window?

When sold as a separate material (not sewn into the curtain), blackout curtains have a fabric side and a coated side. The orientation of the curtains does not affect their performance (they work the same regardless of which side is turned out). But the fabric side (also known as the woven or rough side) is made to face the window for durability. Face the fabric side out to avoid yellowing or sun damage, which will extend the life of your curtains.

Should I draw curtains over blinds?
