When Erica Kuiper first saw her fellow TikToker Paola Yee (AKA @paoladyee) enrobing strawberries and grapes in melted candy on the social media platform, she knew she had to make the sweet treat for her daughter. So Kuiper got to work, unwrapping Jolly Rancher candies and sorting them by color, then microwaved the candies to create a melty, sugary fruit coating.

“I called them ‘crack grapes’ because if you bite into them, they crack,” Kuiper told Yahoo Life. The Topsail Island, NC content creator shared a TikTok of her own attempt at “cracking grapes,” which has since gone viral, racking up more than 20 million views. A subsequent TikTok on crack grapes, with Kuiper sharing tips on making the perfect candied fruit, has garnered another 10 million views.

“This recipe is basically the simple version of tanghulu,” says Kuiper. Tanghulu, a Chinese snack made of crunchy fruit coated in melted sugar, has also been making the rounds on social media in recent years.

Yee, who has racked up over 50,000 views with her own TikTok version of crack grapes, says Kuiper’s comparison to Tanghulu is spot on. “I was inspired by my kids who love strawberries and grapes and their favorite candies, Jolly Ranchers and Pop Rocks,” says Carlsbad, N. Mex. Mummy. “Plus, it’s lazy Tanghulu: no mess is a ‘yes’ to me.”

“I think part of the reason they’ve done so well [on TikTok] is because they’re fun and colorful and crunch is everything,” adds Kuiper. “Some people love them and then of course we have people arguing in the comments that they belong to different cultures or people saying this is a dentist’s dream.”

I tried following Kuiper’s viral crack grapes recipe in my own kitchen and aside from some burns from playing with dripping melted sugar, the process was pretty easy.

To make crack grapes, simply melt some Jolly Rancher candies in a silicone baking dish in the microwave, then dip fruit on wooden skewers into the mixture to lightly coat. While our crack grapes (and strawberries) dried for Kuiper’s recommended 30 minutes, we inserted the opposite end of each stick into squares of green floral foam to hold them upright. (If you don’t have green floral foam lying around, you can also place the candy-dipped fruit on wax paper or a silicone mat to harden.)

The result was crunchy sweet fruit that, while unlike anything I’d tasted, was so good it left me wanting more. As the outer shell “cracks,” the fruit center blends perfectly with the fruit-flavored Jolly Ranchers to create a sweet bite that can only be described as fruit-meets-candy perfection.

Like Kuiper, we added Pop Rocks to some of our fruit creations, which tasted delicious but felt a bit dangerous when combining exploding candy with hot melted sugar.

How to prevent candies from sticking together

The main reason candy gets sticky is because it has been exposed to moisture. The candy is devoid of moisture, so it will soak up whatever it can find.

Kind of like I did in the days following my month-long chocolate ban. I ate every chocolate I saw.

The best way to prevent this is to add something else to your candy storage container that will absorb the water first.

Then there is nothing left to ruin the candy.

In my case, that meant taking my chocolate-obsessed niece with me everywhere. She ate everything before I could reach it.

Coat the candies in cornstarch

Cornstarch is the best way to keep candies from sticking together. And no, you can’t taste it.

Cornstarch has a very fine texture, EXCELLENT ability to absorb moisture and is virtually tasteless.

These three factors make it the perfect candidate for preventing candy from sticking together.

The fine texture means it coats the candy thinly and evenly, and its lack of flavor means it doesn’t affect the taste of the candy.

But most importantly, it absorbs any moisture from the air surrounding the candy. This will protect the candies and prevent them from getting sticky.

The cornstarch worked best for me in my experiment. You could tell the candy was coated with something, but it only looked like a layer of sugar.

Even if the candies were a little sticky before you coated them, the cornstarch was still effective. This was not the case with some other methods.

Coat the candies with powdered sugar

An alternative to cornstarch is powdered sugar, also known as powdered sugar or powdered sugar.

Oils are naturally slippery and also absorb moisture. They work well for keeping the candy non-sticky. (Is that even a word?).

This method worked well in the short term, but I’m not sure it would hold up over the long term. Make sure you only have a very thin layer on top of the candy. Too much gives it a slimy texture.

Use granulated sugar

Sugar is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air.

The sugar in your candies makes them sticky when they come into contact with water.

When you roll your candy in granulated sugar, the outer sugar absorbs the moisture before it gets to the candy, protecting your candy from damage.

It also makes your candies extra sweet and gives them a crunchy texture.

In my opinion, granulated sugar is useful in a pinch.

But since granulated sugar isn’t powdered, I found it difficult to get a good coating. If you have powdered sugar, try that first.

Place rice at the bottom of your storage container

If you drop your phone in some water, you can almost GUARANTEE someone will say, “Quick, put it in some rice!”

What is a desiccant?

Desiccant is a collective term for a substance that you can use as a desiccant.

But what I mean are those tiny packets that you find in shoe boxes and electronics. The packs are filled with silica gel or beads.

Silica readily absorbs water from the air, meaning there’s nothing left for your candy to absorb.

The cool thing about these packets is that you can regenerate them in the microwave (so easy!!). I use these packs from wisedry (sold on Amazon). I like them because they change color depending on how much moisture they’ve absorbed.

So you can see how they work and know exactly when they need to dry.

The silica gel packets are great because they could easily be added to the candy container afterwards. They worked well, but they’re not something most people have on hand.

Wrap candies individually

This isn’t my favorite method (I’ll tell you why in a moment), but it’s very effective.

Wrapping each candy in cellophane or candy wrap (moisture-resistant wax paper sold on Amazon) protects it from exposure to air and therefore moisture. For long-term storage, it is imperative that your packaging is not permeable to air vapor.

I’m not a big fan of this option because it feels pretty wasteful, and I try to avoid excess packaging when I don’t have to.

In most cases, cornstarch or one of my other suggestions will work.

It also takes a long time if you have a lot of candy!

Aside from adding things to your container or coating your candy, there are things you can do in terms of storage that will help keep the candy from sticking.

Choose a suitable (air blocking) container

Everyone knows you need to store your candy in an airtight container, but which airtight container is best?

Plastic is not suitable here because it is permeable to air vapor. Water vapor from outside the container can penetrate the plastic and make your candies mushy and sticky. You can remedy this by having silica gel packets in the container. But just so it doesn’t happen in the first place…

Use a glass container.

Glass is not permeable to air vapor. You don’t have to worry about water entering from the outside.

Store them in a cool, dry environment

Candies must be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

The pantry is perfect, or a basement if you are sure there are no vermin.

The temperature in the pantry is relatively stable and it’s nice and dark.

Keep them separate from other types of candy

Hard candies should be stored separately from candies that give off moisture.

Otherwise, a moisture exchange will begin.

The hard candies pull moisture from the softer candies, leaving the hard candies soft and the soft candies hard.

You can use either an instant-read thermometer (usually marketed for meat) or a candy thermometer. These candy thermometers (available on Amazon) have a clip that allows you to attach them to the side of your pan. This means you get a consistent temperature reading.

Store the candies AS SOON as they have cooled

I repeat that.

Whatever your storage plans, do it AS SOON as the candy is cool. The longer the candy is exposed to air and moisture, the more likely it is that it will become sticky.

There are so many ways you can melt your candies! You have the microwave at your disposal of course, but you could also use the hob, an oven or even a double boiler!

But the question is, can you melt candy without making a big mess? Luckily yes! Although it takes a few tries and techniques to perfect, you can completely melt candy at home and make it look professional. And if you’re worried about it being sticky, stretchy or even difficult to clean, read on to find out how to solve all of these problems!

How to prepare candy for melting

First and foremost, if you want to melt candies at home, you must use the same method of preparation for all your techniques. Doing this correctly will ensure your candies don’t stick to the bottom or burn too quickly.

You need:

Clear candies (Jolly Ranchers, Life Savers, or Mike and Ike work best!)

Clear, sealable polythene bags

Cookie cutters or toothpicks for additional effects

A hammer or meat pounder.

To prepare your candies for melting, all you have to do is separate them into different batches of the same color. Place them in individual ziplock bags and mash into small pieces with a hammer or rolling pin. Your candies are ready to melt!

Pro tip: Don’t crush more than one color of candy together. If you mix them up before crushing and melting them, they’ll camouflage themselves in a not-so-pretty color. Instead, shred them separately and then arrange them on the tray however you like.

How to melt candies with an oven

Reheating and melting your candies in the oven is ridiculously easy. All you need is your crushed candies, some parchment paper, and an oven.

To melt your candies in the oven, follow these steps:

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Line your baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Fold the edges into the pan to keep the candies from overflowing and sticking to the pan. Place your crushed candy in the pan. You can also place the candy in a cookie cutter to give it a final shape. Bake the candies for 5-7 minutes or until melted. Don’t let your candy bubble up. Once it does, it will scorch and burn very quickly. Take out your pan and let it cool. Don’t move your baking sheet too much or the melted candy will move around in the pan and ruin its color and shape. When completely cool after about 15-20 minutes, transfer to a bowl and use as needed.

Pro tip: You can also bake sugar cookies or other cookies in the oven along with your candies. Place your crushed candies in the hollowed out center of your cookies and bake. If your cookies need longer baking time, bake your cookies for 7-8 minutes first, add candies and bake for another 5-6 minutes.

How to melt candies with a pot

Melting candy in a pot is incredibly easy and a lot less messy than you might think. And with a few clever tricks, you’ll have foolproof melted candy every time!

To use this method, you must first choose a pot with a thick bottom. This is very important as using a different pan would most likely burn your candy from the uneven heat distribution. Add your crushed candy to the pan and turn the heat to medium-low. Once your candies start to melt, they are free to move around the pan. Cook this mixture for no more than 5 minutes. When your candy pieces are completely melted, remove them from the heat immediately. Use this mixture as soon as possible. Melted candies don’t take too long to harden. Move very quickly and carefully.

If you don’t want to use an oven or microwave but don’t have a thick-bottomed pot, this next method might be for you!

How to melt candy using the double boiler method

Although this technique requires a little more patience and time than using a pot directly, I would like to mention that this method is also much safer than the previous method. You virtually eliminate all chances of scorching or burning your candies when you melt them with a water bath.

For this technique, place a saucepan or saucepan on the stove. Fill it halfway with water and bring to a boil. Allow the water to reach its boiling point over medium-high heat, then place a smaller bowl on top. Pour your candies into this bowl and let them sit for 2-3 minutes. Stir gently, don’t over-stir. Once your candies are completely melted, transfer them to your baking sheet or mold for later use.

Pro tip: If you want your candies to stay melted longer, turn off the flame but continue to hold the bowl over the pot of simmering water. The residual heat keeps your candy from hardening very quickly and you should work with it a little longer.

Microwaving your candy to melt it is the fastest option out there. But it’s also the hardest and way trickier to get it right. You will most likely need to run a few test batches to get it right. But once you do that, melting candy will be a breeze for you.

First, get a microwave-safe glass bowl or ceramic mug. A glass bowl works best because you can keep a close eye on your candy while it’s in the microwave. Take out small portions of your crushed candies and place them in the bowl. Heat this for 30 seconds on medium-low heat. Take it out, stir it and if it hasn’t melted yet, put it back in the microwave. Repeat at 15-second intervals while keeping an eye on your candy. Your melted candy should be ready in less than 2 minutes.

Microwaves are notorious for uneven, extreme temperatures. Be sure to adjust and lower the temperature. The smaller your candy, the faster it will melt. This will also avoid burning the sugar in your candy.

Finally, you might not succeed on the first two tries, but you can certainly adjust the time and temperature to suit your microwave and then get it right every time!

You will need:

Step 1: Sort the Jolly Ranchers

Separate your Jolly Ranchers by colour/flavor.

This is grape, green apple and watermelon on top with cherry and blue raspberry in front. As you can see, you don’t necessarily get the same number of all flavors in one assortment bag.

This bag had more of the grape than any other flavor and less of the blue raspberry. But even with the blue raspberry, there was more than enough to do the whole experiment twice.

Step 2: Bottle Jolly Ranchers

Add twelve Jolly Ranchers of each flavor to each bottle. Yes, you can put them directly in the bottle instead of in a mixing container. The reason?

Because you don’t have to skim any of it like you do with waxy candies like Skittles. Every bit of Jolly Ranchers—that’s mostly corn syrup, sugar, flavoring, and coloring—belongs in the end product here.

And that’s why Jolly Rancher Vodka is so much easier than lots of candy infusions. When you’re done, you should have five vials of nice colored candies in the bottom.

Step 3: Pour in the vodka

Next, pour the vodka into the bottles above the candies. Insert a funnel (optional) into the neck of each bottle and pour your vodka into it. I filled mine to the brim.

As you can see, as the vodka starts to break down the candies, they immediately take on the color of the vodka.

There is no need to shake them. Just let them sit for about eight to 12 hours and all of the candy will dissolve completely without messing up and nothing sticking to the jar.

I also tried shaking and it took the same amount of time. You can shake if you want, but it doesn’t make a difference.

Your almost finished product will look like this if you have these bottles:

It was a pleasant surprise to see how different the colors of the watermelon and cherry came out. The candies look almost the same shade of red. But with the fortified vodka, they don’t look alike.

As the picture shows here, the cherry is a nice deep red and the watermelon is a lighter red – sort of coral or a cross between pink and orange. Even side by side they don’t look like the same color.

Step 4: Chill!

Put your bottles in the freezer and let them cool for a few hours. Now they are really ready to drink or mix into cocktails.

What you have in your bottles now is almost pure vodka, so they are very strong in alcohol. The flavors are what you would expect. At first you simply taste the Jolly Ranchers in liquid form, just like the candies have always tasted.

Then the vodka hits you with its characteristic tasteless burn. You can definitely drink these straight as flavored martinis or shooters, and they’re a lot of fun.

But you can also mix them in cocktails – more on that in a moment.

Replace the vodka in a Tokyo Iced Tea with Apple Jolly Rancher Vodka. This goes well with the Midori.

Instead of grape schnapps, try a Grape Russian Tea with Grape Jolly Ranchers Vodka.

Replace the grenadine in a German Cherry Bomb with Cherry Jolly Rancher Vodka. It gives a chocolate covered cherry flavor.

Have a love bite with Cherry Jolly Rancher Vodka instead of cherry liqueur. Note, however, that the Jolly Rancher vodka floats on top of the other layers, not below.

Make a Laffy Taffy, but with Watermelon, Apple, and Raspberry Jolly Rancher Vodka instead of the schnapps and DeKuypers the recipe calls for.

When Erica Kuiper first saw her fellow TikToker Paola Yee (AKA @paoladyee) enrobing strawberries and grapes in melted candy on the social media platform, she knew she had to make the sweet treat for her daughter. So Kuiper got to work, unwrapping Jolly Rancher candies and sorting them by color, then microwaved the candies to create a melty, sugary fruit coating.

“I called them ‘crack grapes’ because if you bite into them, they crack,” Kuiper told Yahoo Life. The Topsail Island, NC content creator shared a TikTok of her own attempt at “cracking grapes,” which has since gone viral, racking up more than 20 million views. A subsequent TikTok on crack grapes, with Kuiper sharing tips on making the perfect candied fruit, has garnered another 10 million views.

“This recipe is basically the simple version of tanghulu,” says Kuiper. Tanghulu, a Chinese snack made of crunchy fruit coated in melted sugar, has also been making the rounds on social media in recent years.

Yee, who has racked up over 50,000 views with her own TikTok version of crack grapes, says Kuiper’s comparison to Tanghulu is spot on. “I was inspired by my kids who love strawberries and grapes and their favorite candies, Jolly Ranchers and Pop Rocks,” says Carlsbad, N. Mex. Mummy. “Plus, it’s lazy Tanghulu: no mess is a ‘yes’ to me.”

“I think part of the reason they’ve done so well [on TikTok] is because they’re fun and colorful and crunch is everything,” adds Kuiper. “Some people love them and then of course we have people arguing in the comments that they belong to different cultures or people saying this is a dentist’s dream.”

I tried following Kuiper’s viral crack grapes recipe in my own kitchen and aside from some burns from playing with dripping melted sugar, the process was pretty easy.

To make crack grapes, simply melt some Jolly Rancher candies in a silicone baking dish in the microwave, then dip fruit on wooden skewers into the mixture to lightly coat. While our crack grapes (and strawberries) dried for Kuiper’s recommended 30 minutes, we inserted the opposite end of each stick into squares of green floral foam to hold them upright. (If you don’t have green floral foam lying around, you can also place the candy-dipped fruit on wax paper or a silicone mat to harden.)

The result was crunchy sweet fruit that, while unlike anything I’d tasted, was so good it left me wanting more. As the outer shell “cracks,” the fruit center blends perfectly with the fruit-flavored Jolly Ranchers to create a sweet bite that can only be described as fruit-meets-candy perfection.

Like Kuiper, we added Pop Rocks to some of our fruit creations, which tasted delicious but felt a bit dangerous when combining exploding candy with hot melted sugar.

Overall I would make crack grapes again, maybe with my tween and her friends as it feels like a great way to combine colorful food with a good messy craft project.

What are Kuiper’s top tips for making crack grapes?

“It’s important that the candies don’t burn – the color changes to a very dark color – and that people are careful because boiling sugar can burn and leave serious blisters,” says Kuiper. “And you’ve got to be quick: Dip the fruit into the Jolly Ranchers while they’re still very runny so it’s a thin layer, then into the Pop Rocks, then let them set for 30 minutes.”

Divide eight Jolly Ranchers evenly in a microwave-safe bowl. You may only want to heat one color at a time. Place bowl in center of microwave and heat on high for 80 seconds. Check the candies and if they are not runny, continue to heat until runny, 15 seconds at a time. Use a tea towel or oven mitt to remove the container, but be extremely careful.

Tips for heating Jolly Ranchers in the microwave

A Pyrex pitcher is an excellent vessel as it doesn’t get as hot as some cookware and has a handle for easy pouring.

If the melted candy hardens before you’re done, a 15-second burst of heat in the microwave will re-liquefy it.

If heating Jolly Ranchers in batches, use a different container or allow to cool before using again. Otherwise, it can get uncomfortably hot and difficult to handle.

1. Get creative with shapes

Jolly Ranchers may look colorful and taste great, but they reach their full potential when molded into something more creative. You could make cute treats for Halloween or the festive season. Theme shapes like jewels are great for a kids birthday party.

Dust off your favorite shape from the closet or buy a new one and get started! Always use quality molds suitable for high heat foods. Some cheaper plastic molds won’t stand up to the heat of your candy.

2. Create easy-to-hold DIY lollipops
