How to enable or disable the touchscreen on a laptop

A touchscreen is a great option that allows you to use your finger instead of a mouse to navigate a laptop’s operating system. If your laptop or Chromebook has a touchscreen, it’s enabled and turned on by default.

If your touchscreen isn’t working for some reason, you can try turning it on manually. You can also try calibrating the touchscreen if it isn’t working properly.

If you want to disable the touchscreen entirely, you can do that too.

Select an action from the list below and follow the steps to enable, calibrate, or disable the touchscreen on your laptop or Chromebook.

Note Not all Windows laptops or Chromebooks have a touchscreen display. Check the specifications of your laptop or Chromebook to see if it has a touchscreen display.

Note There are no Apple MacBooks or desktops that support touchscreens. The only exception is the touch bar on the keyboard of some MacBook Pro models.

Activate the touch screen

If the touchscreen isn’t working on your laptop or Chromebook, try enabling it for your device using the steps.

Laptop – Windows 8 and Windows 10

Open Device Manager in Windows.

Click the arrow to the left of the Human Interface Devices option in the list to expand and view the hardware devices in that section. Locate the HID-compliant touchscreen device in the list and right-click on it.

Note If you don’t see an HID-compatible touchscreen entry in Device Manager, your laptop probably doesn’t have a touchscreen display.

From the pop-up menu, choose Activate Device.

Note If you don’t see the Activate Device option in the pop-up menu, the touchscreen is already activated.

Note If the touchscreen isn’t working, try cleaning the screen to remove dirt, dust, and fingerprints. Also, wash your hands to remove oils and dry them thoroughly, then try using the touchscreen again. If it still doesn’t work, it could be defective and needs to be repaired.

You can also check the manufacturer’s website for updated drivers for the touchscreen. Run Windows Update or download and install the latest touchscreen drivers to see if that fixes the issue.

Laptop – Windows 7

Once the Control Panel is open, click on the Pen and Touch option. In the Pen and Touch properties window, click the Touch tab. Check the box for the Use finger as input device option.

Chrome book

Most Chromebooks have a keyboard shortcut to toggle touchscreen functionality. Press Search + Shift + T to toggle the touch screen and try activating it.

If your Chromebook isn’t responding to the Search + Shift + T keyboard shortcut, open the Chrome browser, type chrome://flags/#ash-debug-shortcuts in the address bar, and turn on the Debug keyboard shortcuts option. Try the Find + Shift + T shortcut again to see if it works.

Note If the touchscreen isn’t working, try cleaning the Chromebook screen to remove dirt, dust, and fingerprints. Also, wash your hands to remove oils and dry them thoroughly, then try using the touchscreen again. If it still doesn’t work, it could be defective and needs to be repaired.

Calibrate the touch screen

If the touchscreen is working but not properly, you can try calibrating it to see if that helps resolve the issue. Follow these steps to calibrate your laptop’s touchscreen.

Note Touchscreen calibration options are not available on a Chromebook. You can try installing a third party app from the Google Play Store that is designed to calibrate the touch screen.

Open the Control Panel. Locate and click on the Tablet PC Settings option. If you’re using the category view in the Control Panel, it’s under the Hardware and Sound option. In the Tablet PC Settings window, on the Display tab, in the Display Options section, click the Calibrate button.

Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be instructed to tap the crosshair icon on the screen each time it appears in different places.

Disable the touch screen

If you want to disable the touchscreen on your laptop or Chromebook, use the steps for your device to disable it.

Laptop – Windows 8 and Windows 10

Open Device Manager in Windows. Click the arrow to the left of the Human Interface Devices option in the list to expand and view the hardware devices in that section. Locate the HID-compliant touchscreen device in the list and right-click on it. From the pop-up menu, choose Disable Device.

Note If you don’t see the Disable Device option in the pop-up menu, the touchscreen is already disabled.

Laptop – Windows 7

Open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click the Pen and Touch option. In the Pen and Touch properties window, click the Touch tab. Clear the check box for the Use finger as input device option.

Chrome book

Most Chromebooks have a keyboard shortcut to toggle touchscreen functionality. Press Search + Shift + T to toggle and turn off the touch screen.

Can you add a touch screen to any laptop?

You can add a touch-sensitive screen to any PC – or even an old laptop – by buying a touch-sensitive monitor. There must be a market for them, because most leading monitor suppliers offer them. This includes Acer, AOC, Asus, Dell, HP, Iiyama, LG, Samsung and ViewSonic.

How to Turn Any Non-Touch Screen PC Into a Touch Screen

I need to replace my home PC setup so your article on buying a new family PC was really great for me. Currently, the children only use the PC to access the Internet, run Minecraft, iTunes, play The Sims, etc. I’d really like to try using a touchscreen monitor to get the most out of Windows 8 Gorilla Arms, but after using an iPad I nudge all computer screens with an (unrealistic) expectation that something should happen.

There’s plenty of choice for people who want all-in-ones, but I’d much rather buy a tower to leave the option to potentially upgrade the PC. I’m a developer and I might use the family PC for development in the future. David

You can add a touchscreen to any PC — or even an old laptop — by purchasing a touchscreen monitor. There must be a market for it, as most of the leading monitor suppliers offer them. These include Acer, AOC, Asus, Dell, HP, Iiyama, LG, Samsung and ViewSonic. The lesser-known HannsG also has competitive offers.

However, touch sensitivity requires additional technology, which means additional costs, especially for large screens. Touch-sensitive monitors are therefore more expensive than traditional designs, which must limit the size of the market.

All in One or Tower?

As you’ve noticed, there are many all-in-one PCs with touchscreens, but they’re essentially laptop designs with separate keyboards. Slimline designs impose thermal constraints on the processor, which typically operates at a TDP between 15W and 35W or less. The processor will throttle if it gets too hot and the PC may shut down. In contrast, spacious desktop towers can use processors that run at 45W to 90W or more, giving you more performance for less money.

Towers offer space to add more memory, ports, faster graphics cards, additional hard drives, optical drives (DVD or Blu-ray), and so on. They’re also a lot easier to repair, so they should last longer. The main downside is that they take up more space than laptops or all-in-one designs. This can be critical if you plan to mount the screen on a wall, which is common for touchscreen PCs used for public access to information.

screen positions

You have to consider the flexibility of the design. While the “gorilla arm” argument is oversimplified to the point of silly—teachers have used blackboards for centuries—there are important considerations around screen distance and angles.

The better all-in-ones offer flexibility to deal with different programs and different uses. Often the screen leans back and in some cases can be used in a horizontal position. This makes it handy for playing electronic versions of family board games, navigating maps, playing a virtual piano, and so on.

Desktop monitors are usually designed to be used with the screen in a vertical position and relatively high up. This puts the screen far from your hands, so you probably won’t be using it for touch operations. This is in contrast to using a laptop where the screen can be as handy as the keyboard.

If you choose a touchscreen monitor, choose one that tilts back slightly and can be used in a horizontal position. Of course you should be able to get him back into an upright position for word processing etc.

Alternatively, you can buy any touchscreen if you mount it on a monitor arm that allows the screen to be moved. This may actually be a better option, but it will likely cost more.

Touch screen considerations

Touchscreen monitors are a bit more complicated than traditional designs as they are active rather than passive devices. Traditional screens only need to display an image, while touchscreen monitors need to feed information back to the PC. They often do this via a separate USB cable that runs alongside the VGA/DVI/HDMI/etc. Video cable runs.

Monitors also differ in the number of touch-sensitive points. This can range from five to 40, but 10 is common for Windows 8. Also, different monitors can use optical, resistive or capacitive touch technology. The capacitive touch offers the same experience as using a tablet, which is what you want.

Some monitors support a new standard: MHL (Mobile High-definition Link). This allows you to connect a compatible smartphone or tablet to the monitor to view video with high definition audio (up to 7.1 channels including TrueHD and DTS-HD). The mobile device will charge while connected.

Other considerations are the usual ones: screen size and resolution, brightness, type of technology (LED, IPS, etc.), number of ports, whether speakers are included, and so on. Since you’re a developer, you probably want to quickly create a spreadsheet to compare all the options.

Note that touchscreen monitors designed for Windows 7 – likely with two touch points – are less than ideal for Windows 8, where the bezel needs to be flush with the display for edge swiping gestures. However, I don’t think there are many Windows 7 touchmonitors out there.

monitor selection

I have very little experience with various touchscreen monitors and haven’t tested any, so you’ll have to do your own research. I can point out some of the products available, but unfortunately it can be difficult or impossible to see them before purchasing.

PC World, for example, only seems to offer three touchscreen monitors. These are all Acer models with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolutions and screen sizes of 21.5-inch (£179.99), 23-inch (£249.99) and 27-inch (£379.99). These have MHL support, USB 3.0, and tilt stands that adjust from 80 to 30 degrees, so you could hit it worse. The 23-inch Acer T232HLA IPS screen seems to be the best option.

Argos carries Acer’s 23-inch and 27-inch monitors, but at higher prices. John Lewis doesn’t seem to have any in stock.

My Amazon searches show that the ViewSonic TD2220 is an economical option at around £180. It’s a 22-inch Full HD display. However, the 23-inch HannsG HT231HPB is slightly cheaper (£157.95) and Amazon reviewers give it 4.6 stars out of 5.

Other touchscreen monitors that might be worth a look are the 23.6-inch AOC Style i2472P (£262.98), the 21.5-inch Dell S2240T H6V56 (£207.38) and the 23- Inch Dell S2340T (£339.95). There’s also a ViewSonic TD2340 for £199.99, apparently reduced from £439.99, and a 24-inch Samsung S24C770TS for £449.99.

I think 22-24 inches is the optimal size for a Full HD screen, but there are similar options in smaller and larger sizes.

One more thing …

If you have a modern Windows 8 laptop, you can probably use Windows 8’s touch gestures on the integrated touchpad. In the same way, you could just buy a touchpad for your desktop PC and use it with a cheaper non-touch screen. Logitech’s T650 rechargeable touchpad is an expensive option at £114, although the £39.99 wireless T650 seems like a better buy.

, select > for hardware changes. If the touchscreen does not work after enabling, right-click HID-compatible touchscreen > Update driver. Look for the driver update and install it.

The touch screen on a Windows device is usually enabled by default. If it doesn’t, enable it using Device Manager, located in Control Panel. In this guide, we will show you how to turn on the touchscreen in Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7, force Windows to check the hardware for a touchscreen, and how to update the touchscreen driver.

How to turn on the touchscreen in Windows 10 and 8

To enable the touchscreen in Windows 10 and 8, you need to access Device Manager. You can access Device Manager from the Control Panel, but it’s slightly faster to access it directly from the search box on the taskbar.

Select the search box on your taskbar. Enter device manager. Choose Device Manager. Select the arrow next to Human Interface Devices. Choose an HID-compatible touchscreen. Select Action at the top of the window. Select Activate device. Check if your touchscreen is working.

If the touchscreen has been disabled on your Windows 10 tablet, you will need to connect a USB keyboard and mouse to turn it back on.

How to force Windows to search for a touchscreen

If you don’t see an entry for an HID-compatible touchscreen in your device manager, there are two possible causes. The first is that Windows doesn’t recognize that you have a touchscreen, which can be fixed by scanning for hardware changes. The other is that you don’t have a touchscreen.

If your touchscreen has never worked and you don’t see a listing for an HID-compatible touchscreen, contact your device manufacturer. Give them the product number and they can tell you if your device should have a touchscreen. Many laptop product lines include similar touchscreen and non-touch versions.

If you’re sure you want your device to have a touchscreen, here’s how to force Windows to look for it:

If Device Manager isn’t open, select the search box on your taskbar, type device manager, and then click Device Manager to open it. Select the arrow next to Human Interface Devices to expand the list and make sure no HID-compatible touchscreen is showing. From the toolbar, select Action. Select Scan for hardware changes. Select the Human Interface Devices list to see if an HID-compliant touchscreen is present. If the Windows add new hardware wizard finds your touch screen, verify that it works. If not, continue to the next section to check for driver updates.

If your touchscreen isn’t found, there might be a hardware issue, or your device might not have a touchscreen at all.

How to update your touchscreen driver

In some cases, you may have a touchscreen that doesn’t work even after you enable it. If you see a listing for an HID-compatible touchscreen in your device manager and your touchscreen still doesn’t work after enabling it, there may be a driver or hardware issue.

In situations where a touchscreen isn’t working due to a driver issue, you can usually fix it by updating the driver, running Windows Update, or contacting your computer manufacturer for specific instructions or update tools.

To update your touchscreen driver:

If Device Manager isn’t open, select the search box on your taskbar, type device manager, and then select Device Manager to open it. Select the arrow next to Human Interface Devices to expand the list. Right-click on the HID-compatible touchscreen. Choose Update driver. Select Search automatically for updated driver software. If the driver update wizard finds a new driver, install it. Check if your touchscreen is working. If your touchscreen still doesn’t work, run Windows Update.

How to activate a touch screen in Windows 7

Touch screens work differently in Windows 7 than in later versions of Windows. If you have Windows 7, enable your touchscreen from the pen and touch menu instead of Device Manager. This menu can be accessed from the Control Panel.

Choose the Start button. Choose Control Panel. Select pen and touch. Select the Touch tab. Check the box next to Use finger as input device. The check box must be checked for the touch screen to work. If it’s already enabled and your touchscreen isn’t working, there may be a hardware or driver issue. Check if your touchscreen is working.

Do you need a touch screen in Windows 10?

No, Windows 10 laptops and 2-in-1s do not technically require a touchscreen. This means that you may end up in situations where you find the touchscreen is disabled. Disabling the touchscreen can prevent unintentional inputs, e.g. B. Clicking on things you didn’t mean to click. Therefore, some people choose to forego this feature.

The main reason for enabling a touchscreen on a Windows 10 device is that it can make some tasks easier to perform, since tapping the screen usually takes less time than moving the mouse and clicking with a small trackpad .

In some cases, with a touchscreen and a compatible pen device, you can use your Windows 10 laptop, 2-in-1, or tablet the same way you would use a drawing tablet. If you work in graphic design, this is a great way to squeeze additional functionality out of a touchscreen-enabled Windows 10 device.

How to Turn Any Non-Touch Screen PC Into a Touch Screen

Want to buy a touchscreen laptop but can’t afford it?

But what if I told you that you can turn your existing non-touchscreen laptop into a touchscreen laptop?

Yes, it’s possible. You can now turn your laptop or PC into a touchscreen with the help of a new device called the AirBar.

The touch screen has become a popular feature on laptops these days, and many laptops are moving towards touch screens, but not every laptop or desktop model has this feature.

Swedish company Neonode brought you a new device, AirBar, that would bring touch technology to virtually any computer, from your non-touch laptops to notebooks.

What is AirBar and how does it work?

AirBar is a small, plug-and-touch bar that attaches magnetically to the underside of your machine’s display.

When connected to your laptop via an available USB port, the AirBar begins to emit an invisible beam of light across your screen, which is used to track touchscreen movements and gestures.

The movements and gestures are then translated into appropriate input, so you can use all gestures such as nudge, pinch, swipe, zoom and scroll with your hand just as you would on a touchscreen PC.

AirBar turns any laptop, computer or notebook into a touchscreen device without making any hardware changes.

You can watch the video below to see how AirBar really works.

And the great thing about AirBar is that…

…it even works with gloves and with any other object.

AirBar works well with any device running Windows 8 or Windows 10, or even a Chromebook, but it still needs to have decent OS X support.

The AirBar will retail for $49 next month and will be unveiled to the public at the CES event in Las Vegas in January 2016. Currently 15.6 inch screen size. Currently, the only size AirBar will accommodate is 15.6-inch screens.
