Hello and welcome to this series of Notes On Alto Saxophones.
In this beginner sax sheet music lesson, we will learn how to play the F sharp and G flat notes on our alto sax.
G flat = Gb F sharp = F#
These two notes sound the same but have different names depending on a few things. However, they are actually the same note.
There are actually THREE F sharp and G flat notes on the alto saxophone.
Description:
1 To play a low F#/G#, add all three main fingers of your left hand, plus the middle finger of your right hand.
2 To play a middle F#/G#, keep all main fingers on their main keys, just like a low F, but add the register key with your LEFT thumb.
3 Note – Your sax may or may not have the required right key. Not all saxophones have a high F# key…some have them, some don’t.
However, if this is the case – To play a high F#/Gb, hold the register key (sometimes called the octave key) with your LEFT thumb on the back of your sax, but remove all 6 main fingers. Using the bottom outside of your LEFT index finger, add the first two top side buttons. Using the bottom inside middle finger of your LEFT hand, add the third top side button. Using the bottom outside of your RIGHT index finger (index finger), add the upper top side button. Add the high F# key (if it has one!) with your RIGHT middle finger.
