When the jack-in-the-box effect is not a laughing matter …
If the jack-in-the-box effect is no laughing matter…
When the little clown or the toy jumps out of the box, it usually triggers joy and amazement. However, when opened packages are delivered to recipients, they are certainly no cause for amusement. Incorrectly sealed packaging causes anger and resentment. The first place people look for flaws is in the glue, which is supposed to securely attach the lid of the box. But that’s not always true.
The reliability of a box’s seal or closure is influenced by a number of factors: the choice of hot melt adhesive, the restoring forces on the top flap and the quality of the packaging surface. However, the surface of the cardboard material is decisive for securely fastened packaging.
Read on as we tell you more about the role of packaging material in choosing a hot melt adhesive.
If the cover isn’t attached properly and opens again, it’s time to look for the source of the problem. And here the devil is often in the details. What is considered general knowledge for carton manufacturers is not necessarily so for packers/end customers.
As a result, not every user is aware that paperboard comes in many different forms and that the composition of the paperboard can significantly affect adhesion. The cardboard surface can vary greatly. The paperboard is categorized according to its proportion of recycled paper, with a first rough distinction being made between kraftliner, testliner and inferior paper.
Kraft liner (Source: Moosmann GmbH & Co. KG, Ravensburg) Kraft liner (Source: Moosmann GmbH & Co. KG, Ravensburg)
Cartons are classified as kraftliner if they are made from bleached and unbleached sulphate pulp (at least 70% fresh fibre). They are largely tear-resistant and moisture-resistant, with a low percentage of recycled fibers. Dark brown in color without impurities, kraft liners are mainly used as lids in corrugated cardboard production. Kraft liners have a smooth surface made from fresh fibers of even length.
Testliner (Source: Moosmann GmbH & Co. KG, Ravensburg) Testliner (Source: Moosmann GmbH & Co. KG, Ravensburg)
Testliner, on the other hand, consists of almost 100% waste paper and is divided into three categories depending on the quality of the paper sorting. T1 contains high quality recovered paper, while other categories of decreasing paper quality are labeled T2 and T3. The stiffness of the paper is comparable to that of the kraftliner, the color is pale brown with slightly visible mottle. The paper has a grammage of approx. 125 gsm and an undetermined pulp composition. It is also used as a coverstock in corrugated board. The cheaper testliners have an uneven surface made from recycled fibers of different lengths. The fibers become shorter and shorter with each recycling process.

Unsorted waste paper is used to produce low-quality paper. This simple material serves as an inner lining for inferior corrugated cardboard or as packaging paper. It is grey, with clearly visible play of colors and (dirt) mottles.
The shorter fibers in recycled paper require more binders and additives. The percentage ratios of the admixtures within the paper mixture often vary. These additives change the surface tension of the paper and the changed polarity affects the hot melt adhesive used. A hot melt adhesive that securely seals a kraftliner may fail on inferior paper.
Restoring force: the force that brings an elastic system back into balance after it has become unbalanced.
In relation to the sealing/fixing box, the restoring force describes the impulse of the closing flap to return to its starting position.
If the paper material also has strong restoring forces on the flap, these must be taken into account when choosing the adhesive.
The restoring force is material-specific and depends on the type of grooving. The material is intentionally weakened at the crease to reduce resistance to bending. If the fiber composite is destroyed at the crease by pre-folding the paper material, the forces acting on it are also reduced. If the carton is overfilled during packing, the restoring forces on the lid flaps increase. The resulting tension puts a heavy load on the adhesive joint. The hot melt adhesive must therefore be selected depending on the overall handling process.
The way in which the packaging material is stored and the packages are transported also influences the adhesive properties. For example, will the box be stacked and will the adhesive bond be stressed? The carton absorbs the humidity and usually quickly takes on the ambient temperature (important, for example, for frozen packaging or warm filling). The moisture that has diffused in impairs the strength and adhesion of the cardboard inside and out.
The paper quality, which has changed due to environmental influences, temperature fluctuations and transport, is another aspect that must be taken into account when selecting the adhesive.
Paper manufacturers go to great lengths to test the printability of their products. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to focus more on their adhesive properties to minimize complaints.
We will find a suitable solution for your needs and are also happy to test the adhesive properties of your boxes. Feel free to contact us.
