Winter weather can range from cold to hot depending on where you live. We’ve had some cold winter weather the other day and it was the perfect time to reflect on seasonal changes with this winter clothing activity.
Children learn best through hands-on experience and investigation. Using their personal experiences helps reinforce the information children are learning about seasonal clothing.

We read the book The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Nietzel. This book is a fun, circular story that layers the different types of clothing the child wears in the snow.
After reading a few pages, your children will be able to “read” it, using the repetitive text as a guide.
What We Wear: Winter Clothing Activity
After reading the book The Jacket I Wear in the Snow, our class discussed winter weather and the different types of clothing we might need to stay warm. Some of the clothes mentioned in the book are the same clothes that we wear. Some of the clothes are not.
Encourage conversation. Talking, listening, exchanging ideas and reflecting on what is said are important foundations for literacy and for life.
Compare and contrast with older children. Discuss what is the same and what is different, what they are wearing, and what the child is wearing in the book.
Preschool drawing activity
I drew a child on a large sheet of white paper. We talked about the clothes he needed and added them to the character. Then I invited the children to decorate his winter clothes.
During this activity we had further discussions about clothing and cold weather. Finally, we labeled the different garments as a whole group. The children listened to the initial sound of each word to spell the words.
I have the picture displayed in our room. Now we have a ready reference for these winter clothing words.
To extend this activity, especially for older children, work with the children to trace each one on a large piece of paper. Then every child can dress for the cold.

January… we meet again. It’s officially winter.
That means sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves, boots and socks…or foot gaggles if you hate wearing socks (like me).
Regardless, cold weather means dressing warmer. And sometimes we need to teach our students what is and is not appropriate clothing for cold weather.
So this month I’ve chosen a book that is not only repetitive and fun, but also has lovely drawings and provides so many educational moments for students to learn what to wear in cold weather.
The Jacket I Wear in the Snow is a book written by Shirley Neitzel and illustrated by Nancy Winslow Parker. It’s a fantastic January to read aloud!
I would rate this book as an early reader. Winter clothing pieces are illustrated in the sets, which is perfect for augmented reading.
For my students practicing basic sight words, I would just have them read the sight words and identify the images of the clothes.
As we read this book, we already spoke briefly about the season of winter. We probably talked about snow and how to make a snowman. And in those discussions, we talked a little bit about not being able to wear flip flops in the snow.
I mean, you could…but for the sake of my little ones’ literal thoughts, we know not to wear flip-flops in the snow.
After reading the book and learning the names of all the different items of clothing we wear in the snow, we’ll use flashcards to practice saying where and/or how to wear (and boyyyy do) a hat, gloves, or pants sometimes funny!)
Expansion activities:
• Bring winter clothes for the students. Take a picture of them, print out the picture, stick it on a piece of paper, and then have them label each item of clothing by writing their name.
• Have students donate gloves/mittens at your school. Collect the donations and then donate them to a local church or charity for the winter months.
• Make sensory snow! (You can find the recipe here)
• Create a sensory container filled with cotton balls and other “winter items” for students to find. These items can be molded erasers, dollar store trinkets, or simple pictures of winter clothing. Students can then graph the results of the found items.
• Copy a page or two of the book. Do a search and find basic sight words. Use highlighters or Mr. Sketch markers to circle or color in the target words. Great for first time readers!
