Styling a denim jacket is super easy, and while different cuts and colors work best with certain looks, there are some basic guidelines that need to be followed.
1. First things first: Don’t button up. Denim jackets are a casual piece of clothing and buttoning them up and down restrains the movement of the jacket. This applies to both the body of the jacket and the sleeves. More often than not, you’ll want to wear a denim jacket open and try the sleeves unbuttoned and rolled up for a casual, comfortable style.
Rolling up the cuffs once makes a massive difference to the look of your outfit. Play with long-sleeved shirts or sweaters worn under the denim. Topping the shirt at the arms or even turning down the cuffs gives a stylish, cohesive effect.

Continue to adjust the Four In Hand shawl knot until it sits neatly around your neck.

A denim jacket, also known as a denim jacket or trucker jacket, is a jacket made of denim. Introduced to the United States in the late 19th century, it was a popular style of casual wear among both men and women and has been described as an iconic element of American fashion. The first recorded denim jacket is part of the collection of the German Historical Commission for the Rhineland (Stiftung Historische Commission für die Rheinlande 1789–1815) [1] and dates to 1805 or 1810. In the United States, the first recorded denim jacket is from about 1880 , which originated with German businessman Levi Strauss some ten years after he invented jeans as a new breed of workwear for cowboys, miners, and railroad workers.[2] The “Type III” denim jacket, introduced by Levis Strauss & Co. in 1962,[a] has been described as the denim jacket “to rule them all.”[5] Also known as a “trucker jacket,” Type III design cues include a tapered style, welt hand pockets, and tabs securing chest pocket and sleeve openings.[3]
In 2017, Google collaborated with Levi Strauss & Co. to develop a “connected” denim jacket, which Wired calls the “denim jacket of the future.”[6] The underlying technology, dubbed “Jacquard,” included a processor, a built-in battery, and special yarn that gave the underside of the arm pseudo-touchscreen functionality.[6] That same year, New York Fashion Week showcased several denim jackets, with The Guardian predicting that the denim jacket would “be everywhere in 2018”.[7] A second version of the jacquard jacket was released in late 2019, which looks more like jackets without the technology and comes at a lower price point.[8]
In addition to Levi Strauss & Co., Wrangler, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Gucci and Dior, among others, have designed denim jackets.[9]

Cultural impact[edit]
According to GQ, there are “few things more iconic, inherently American than a denim jacket,” and the magazine has called them “a staple for stylish men.”[10][11] Denim jackets were also popular with women.[12]
Denim jackets, like jeans, are a staple of Western clothing; However, like jeans themselves, they have also enjoyed a more general appeal.[13] Notable wearers of denim jackets have included Western entertainers James Dean and John Lennon[2] and Polish anti-communist dissident Jacek Kuroń[14]. In 2017, GQ opined that Kanye West appears to own “an alarming number of denim jackets,” noting that “he doesn’t seem to go a few days without wearing one.”[15]
According to Levi Strauss & Co., the denim jacket has traditionally appealed to nonconformists as “a slap against the ‘suits’ of the world”, its informal yet edgy heritage makes it the ideal garment for man to dress”.[16]
Finally, in Jordan Peele’s 2022 film Nope, the flying alien is referred to as “Jean Jacket.”
Wear and styling[ edit ]
While denim jackets are predominantly found in blue, denim can be dyed any color attainable with cotton, so jackets in colors such as white and purple also exist.[17] As with jeans themselves, it is possible to purchase “raw” or “dry” denim jackets that have not been washed or aged in the factory and instead will naturally fade and shrink over time with wear.[18] Denim jackets lined with Sherpa for warmth are also available.[17]
Canadian tuxedo[ edit ]
A “Canadian tuxedo” is a slang term for wearing a denim shirt or jacket with jeans. The term reportedly originated in 1951 after Bing Crosby was denied entry to a hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, for wearing a denim top and pants. After learning about the incident, Levi Strauss & Co. designed an all-denim tuxedo for Crosby as a publicity stunt.
Despite its name, the “Canadian tuxedo” is not a specifically Canadian style, but is also closely correlated with American pop culture images such as the Marlboro Man.[21]
The Crosby incident is credited with helping propel denim’s evolution from blue-collared workwear to a fashion staple. [22] However, the popularity of the full “Canadian tuxedo” look has varied, being accepted as stylish and on-trend at times as a fashion faux pas.[22] Some fashion stylists have claimed that the look works better when the jeans and jacket are different colors than when they are the same shade.[23] The “Canadian tuxedo” has also sometimes been interpreted to include a flannel shirt underneath the jacket, although this is not a universal definition.
The Canadian tuxedo hit a “pop culture peak” in 2001 when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore the suit to that year’s American Music Awards. In 2016, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wore a “Canadian tuxedo” to a concert by The Tragically Hip.[26] Lady Gaga has also worn a Canadian tuxedo in public.[27]
In 2014, Levi Strauss produced a limited edition of 200 replicas of the original Crosby tuxedo jacket as part of that year’s line.[22] Various fashion design houses have also produced couture interpretations of the “Canadian tuxedo”.[21]
