1.8T Cam Chain Tensioner DIY?

Couple of hints……

Align the crank pulley with the timing mark.

Use zip ties and tie the timing belt to the camshaft sprocket, then remove the camshaft sprocket from the camshaft and attach securely to the hood latch on the front clip (tight to keep the timing belt from slack). If the timing belt is slack even for a moment, a tooth on the crank gear can slip.

Your new tensioner should come with a unique looking tool holding it together. Take it off (5mm allen key) and install it on the in the car. Thread it down until it feels tighter. Don’t crank it, only about 7 ft lbs or you may break the plastic.

Once the valve cover is off, use brake cleaner and clean a spot on each small cam gear/camshaft. Use some sort of paint to mark where the chain and cogs line up BEFORE TAKING THE CAMS. That way you don’t have to figure out how to properly align the cams if it falls apart when replacing the tensioner. Very frustrating.

When reassembling, all T30 bolts are torqued to 7 ft lbs, cross pattern for the cams. Cam gear bolt is 48 ft lbs (for AEB and ATW engine codes).

Reinstalling the cam gear on the cam after they’ve been reinstalled is a PITA. Use an 8mm allen key in the timing belt tensioner and use constant pressure to push it all the way down (loosest position). Holding it there, pull the gear up and align the tooth. This can be a 2 person job.

Once that is all done and the camshaft sprocket bolt is tightened, use the 8mm allen key to retighten the timing belt tensioner snugly. Use a pry bar on the crank gear, move it back and forth and check your timing marks again. If they’re okay like that, I always go around once by hand and double-check.

Scary, I have to make too many of these. AIM me when you get in trouble.

Apply constant hand pressure to the tensioner and it should go down far enough to give you working clearance. Then use cotton swabs and degreaser to clean between the head and the tensioner. When installing the crescent, place something flat between the chain and the tensioner body to maneuver the seal into place. It would probably help if you had an extra pair of hands to hold up the tensioner while you install the new gasket, but I did without just to make sure you didn’t force it in.
