JB Weld can be applied in layers. Just clean the surface thoroughly, apply JB welding and wait at least 8 hours to reapply. When applying additional layers it is important to wait until the first application sets before applying.

Does J-B Weld work on a car exhaust?

Due to the extreme temperatures of exhaust systems, we do not recommend J-B Weld for use on exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters. We also do not recommend the product for repairs inside the combustion chamber. However, in areas where the sustained temperature is less than 400ºF (232ºC), we recommend our HighHeat Epoxy Putty.

Used PC-7 and Alumbond for rim plugs, not welded.

So far (about a year) so good with a couple of wheels with Alumbond H-45 which according to the MSDS has a couple of components with aluminum atoms. (Results look exactly like those PC-7 plugs.) Note that initial inflation made numerous small popping noises…suggesting plugs are present, hopefully geometrically trapped but not welded to the rim . No confirmation as safe for anyone!

Pre-barcode, atomic formula PC7 epoxy near the bottom of the can still seemed fine…mixed a bit stiff, but I avoided getting too warm because I didn’t want a quick set. The best placement was found with a slightly flexible stainless steel medical/dental blade. Press into the hole and finish off by tapping instead of wiping. (Regular cleaning of the spatula with paint thinner.) Post-curing in the hot car after setting. Mill smooth with a large rat file, then finish with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a small rat tail file.) Not pressure tested in a hot car. Did a few test drives. The tire was removed for inspection and the inside of the rim lightly waxed to make it easier to get on and off by hand.

Masterbond S22 Aluminum Filled Epoxy has excellent properties but is custom stacked with a minimum order of $700. Will try Amazon’s 2 ounce Hypoxy Alumbond H-45 (test samples first). This is for a wheelset that I want fast to compare a bike to other fast wheeled recumbents. How Much Heat Can J-B Weld Withstand?

Original J-B Weld can withstand a constant temperature of 500º F. The maximum short term temperature threshold (10 minutes) is approximately 600ºF. See individual product packages for additional temperature information.

Is J-B Weld water and/or petrol resistant?

When fully cured, J-B Weld is completely resistant to water, gasoline and almost any other petroleum product or auto chemical. For wet surface or submerged or gasoline repairs, try our SteelStik or WaterWeld.

KwikWeld is a great alternative to the original J-B Weld when you need a fast curing epoxy. It sets in 4 minutes and cures in 4-6 hours while J-B Weld sets in 4-6 hours and cures in 15-24 hours. Because it sets faster, KwikWeld is about two-thirds the strength of J-B Weld; However, they are both strong enough for most projects and repairs.

Can I thin J-B Weld to make casting easier?

Yes. Add up to one teaspoon of acetone or lacquer thinner for every two ounces (one full container) of mixed product.

Yes, it is microwave safe.

What is epoxy and how is it used?

Epoxies are adhesives made from epoxy resin and hardener. These substances are stored separately, so you should not mix them until you are ready to start gluing. You can do this automatically with an instant mix syringe, or you can do it yourself by mixing the substances on a separate tray. Make sure the mix ratio is kept at 1:1 to create the strongest bond.
