This debate has arisen from the popularity of “plug and play” or 13 amp hot tubs as consumers seek to narrow down their options based on the power required for a particular hot tub. But what does all this mean? In this article, we explain the differences between 13 amp and 32 amp hot tubs, how running costs may or may not be affected and how you should deal with this as a buyer, as well as some frequently asked questions.

What is a 13 amp hot tub?

A 13 amp hot tub (also known as a plug and play hot tub) is a hot tub that only requires power from a standard 3 pin plug. These hot tubs barely existed 15-20 years ago, but they have become very popular with consumers looking for savings on hot tub electrical wiring. They tend to be a popular upgrade to an inflatable hot tub too, as they can use the same power supply and, as explained below, tend to be a bit friendlier on the bank account!

What is a 32 amp hot tub?

A 32A spa is a spa that requires a 32A power supply and therefore will NOT operate with a standard 3 pin plug. We explain below why they need more power.

What is the difference between 13 amp and 32 amp hot tubs?

A 13 amp spa is limited to 1 jet pump, it can have an extra circulating pump, but due to the limited power supply it will only have 1 large jet pump at a time. A 32 amp spa can have up to 2 jet pumps and a circulation pump. With a 13 amp spa, the heater CANNOT run at the same time as the jet pump. This means the heater must be off when the jets are on, due to a power limitation. Most 32 amp hot tubs allow you to run the pumps and heater at the same time. On a mild or warm day this has no effect, but on a cold day when the heater is not running alongside the pumps the hot tub temperature can drop quite quickly while in operation. For a well-insulated 13-amp hot tub, this isn’t a huge issue, but for hot tub-goers who like a long soak, it’s worth knowing and considering.

A 13 amp hot tub will also be limited to a 2kW heater, while some 32 amp hot tubs can go as high as 3kW.

Due to the limited number of pumps, most 13 amp spas have fewer jets than a 32 amp spa. This is only because the jet to pump ratio should have a reasonable limit. Some manufacturers add more jets than the spa should have, which weakens the degree of massage and spreads the power thinly, so most 13 amp spas have fewer jets, but some don’t! A rough estimate for installing an outside socket is between £150 and £450*, while a 32 amp supply can cost up to £750* depending on various factors. You must ensure that you consult a qualified electrician when installing power to a hot tub. 8 Key Differences Between 13 Amp And 32 Amp Hot Tubs

There are a number of key differences between 32 amp hot tubs and their 13 amp equivalents, including:

1. The power supply

The main difference between the two types of home spas is the power supply that powers them.

13 amp models — known as “plug and play spas” — operate from a standard three-prong outlet, while 32 amp spas require a 32 amp power supply.

This means a fully qualified and certified electrician must install a power supply and run armored cable to your 32 amp spa to meet building codes, adding a few hundred pounds to installation costs.

2. 13 amp spas have fewer pumps

A 13 amp hot tub is limited to either a single dual speed jet pump or a single jet pump alongside a circulation pump.

Opt for a plug-and-play hot tub and the heater will turn off automatically when you turn the water jets to full power.

The extra amps mean that 32-amp models typically have at least two jet pumps, meaning they can power all the jets with more power for a more intense massage.

That’s not to say that 13-amp hot tubs can’t give you a comfortable hydrotherapy massage, as you can redirect the power to a single seat for a more powerful massage and open the air valves to increase the intensity.

However, opt for a 32 amp model and everyone can enjoy a full-power massage right away.

3. The nozzle-to-pump ratio

Because more power goes into more pumps, a 32-amp hot tub can have more jets than a plug-and-play equivalent.

This makes for a better hydrotherapy massage and helps to reap the full benefits of a hot tub.

4. Noise from the circulation pump

Many 13 amp spas do not have a separate circulation pump which means that when the water temperature needs to be increased to reach your set temperature (typically 37-39°C) the main water pump will activate at low speed.

While the circulating pumps that maintain the temperature of 32-amp hot tubs are nearly silent, the main water pumps of a 13-amp hot tub can be a bit noisy, especially when water is circulating into the hot tub via massage jets that have moving parts within them . And it’ll kick in at random times day and night, unless you’re looking for a model that lets you control what time of day the pump activates.

If your hot tub is close to your home or neighbors, this ambient noise can be a real nuisance – especially if your hot tub is on a deck, as the decking structure itself can create additional vibrations.

When activating the heater on a 13 amp home hot tub without a separate circulation pump, the main pump must also be on (at low speed) to force water through the heater’s jets.

So if it’s important to you to be able to relax in peace for long periods of time without the jets running, a 13 amp hot tub without a separate circulation pump may not be the ideal choice.

5. 13A spas cannot run the heater at the same time as the pumps

One of the biggest functional differences between 13 amp hot tubs and their 32 amp equivalents is that a 13 amp hot tub does not have enough power to run its heater and jets at the same time.

Since hot tubs lose around 60% of their heat through the water’s surface, they can cool down quite quickly without the help of their heater – especially in the winter.

Insulation helps a lot here, of course – so if you decide that a 13 amp model is the right option for you, go for a model from a high-end brand that’s fully insulated with quality foam.

13 amp hot tubs are also usually limited to 2kW heaters, while 32 amp models may have 3kW heaters which will heat the water much faster. So you’ll have to wait a little longer — up to seven or eight hours in the dead of winter when the ambient temperature is in the single digits — to use a 13-amp hot tub after filling compared to a 32-amp model.

6. The cost of installing the power supply

A 32 amp spa must be run through a 32 amp supply with a circuit breaker. So if you don’t already have one of these in your backyard, you’ll need to install one to use a higher voltage home hot tub.

A 13 amp hot tub can be powered from a standard waterproof RCD protected three pin outdoor socket saving a few hundred pounds on the initial cost of the hot tub.

Installing a socket for a 13 amp hot tub will cost around £150-450 and up to £750 to install a 32 amp hot tub, meaning installing a 32 amp hot tub will typically cost around £300-600 more costs a 13 amp equivalent than a hot tub.

Of course, a 32 amp model also has better performance. Keeping your hot tub for a decade reduces those installation costs to £30-60 per year – and the supply is already in place if you also decide to purchase another 32 amp hot tub.

Regardless of what type of hot tub you choose, make sure the nearest location to the outlet is at least six feet from the hot tub.

Also ensure that you connect your spa to the power supply with an armored cable (with steel braid SY) and ensure that dangling cables do not present a tripping hazard.

And don’t be tempted to hook up a 13 amp spa using standard extension cords that lead to indoor outlets, as cords not protected by steel wire armor and RCDs can be extremely dangerous – especially when water is present.

7. The running costs
