The best way to solve the problem is to use the HP Guided Troubleshooters:

(Just select your problem description at the bottom of the screen to access the next steps that should resolve your issue).
Alternatively, you can also try the following steps:
Step 1: Delete job files and restart
Whenever a print job is sent to the printer, a file is created in Windows. Sometimes these files get corrupted and cause problems. To properly reset your printing environment, manually delete these print job files and restart both the computer and the printer.
Watch this video on YouTube.
Turn off the printer’s power switch, and then unplug the printer’s power cord from the electrical outlet. Secure your work. After completing these steps, your current print jobs will be lost and will need to be printed again. Open Windows Services using one of the following methods: Search Windows for services and click Services in the list of results.
Press Windows key ( ) + R on your keyboard, type services.msc in the window that opens, and then click OK. Scroll through the list of services and look for the Print Spooler name. Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
Figure : Pause selection for print spooler service
After the service has stopped, close the service window and use Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS. Delete all files in the PRINTERS folder. Shut down your computer from Windows. Make sure the printer has been unplugged for at least 60 seconds, and then plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. Turn on the printer using the power switch on the printer. Turn on the computer and wait for Windows to open. Try to print again and see what happens. If the printer prints, you’re done.
If the print job stalls again, continue to the next step.

Factory reset hp2540
After an ink cartridge change, my HP2540 thinks it’s halfway a scan. The scan detector under the glass plate shifts to the left and then to the right and stops in the middle. Then the warning light flashes.
I can print normally. But no more scans or copies.
HP Print and Scan Doctor says there is a problem with the scanner and the scan needs to stop first.
The ink cartridge is an original HP301 cartridge and is recognized.
I’ve tried almost everything to fix it. Everything reinstalled. So far no success.
The reason I think I need a factory reset is because with no power on my PC, completely powered off and no USB in the printer, I have the same printer startup with the scan detector stopping in the middle and the warning light stopping flashing .
Please help so I can scan and copy again.
Many Thanks.
