How to Root LG G3 (D852) and Install TWRP Recovery
If you own an LG G3 (D852) and also want to root the device then you are on the right page.
If you are an Android enthusiast and want to root and install TWRP recovery on your lover, then you have landed on the right page. Throughout the article, we will guide you through the process of rooting LG G3 (D852).
The TWRP features material design and an attractive user interface (UI). By following this guide you can install the latest TWRP for LG G3 (D852). You can download TWRP Recovery from the links in the Prerequisites section of this article. Please note that this is an unofficial TWRP recovery and only applies to LG G3 (D852) (please confirm the model by going to Settings > About). The process given below is just for rooting and installing TWRP on LG G3 (D852). Do not try this method on another device.
If you want to unlock the full potential of your LG G3 (D852) hardware, rooting and flashing a custom recovery like TWRP is the main concern. The Stock ROMs often have limited and unsupported features in terms of customization. If you have a rooted device and have also flashed TWRP recovery, you can install all custom ROMs, mods, kernel and Xposed etc. as well as many apps that require root access to work properly. You can easily root the device with One Click Android Root Tool, either via PC or via APK, which is a quick process.
Brief details and benefits of TWRP recovery
TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) is an open source community development project. Flashing the TWRP will enable your device to install any custom firmware, root your smartphone, modify ZIP files for customizations, run Xposed modules for custom features, one-click root and unroot processes. Apart from that, you can create full nandroid backup and restore later, flash image file in one click, remove bloatware, overclock and underclock. With TWRP, one can easily clean wipe, cache and data after flashing any image file to reflect the changes and fix minor bugs due to cache.
Installing TWRP requires your LG G3 (D852) phone to have the bootloader unlocked. This means that in order to root your device and make any customizations, you must first unlock the bootloader.
Disclaimer: While the AndroidWeblog.com covers everything very neatly and curated to ensure our readers get exactly what they want, there are very few chances of any fundamental issues that may arise from the steps outlined here. Hence, it is in the sole interest of the user to follow the steps very carefully to avoid any mishaps with your device.
Rooting and flashing Custom ROM firmware will undoubtedly void your device’s warranty and AndroidWeblog.com will not be held responsible in any way for voiding your warranty or your bricked device.
precondition
Make sure you check your model number which must be:
LG G3 (D852)
You must ensure that before rooting your phone you have read the disclaimer thoroughly and agree to proceed at your own risk.
Phone should be charged
Your phone must be at least 70% charged, otherwise experimenting can sometimes have complications. Why take a risk, try to charge it fully.
To back up
Whenever you either root your phone or install a custom ROM, it’s a good habit to back up your phone. Back up all your media like pictures, videos and everything on your PC and contacts in the cloud.
Enable USB debugging
(Applies to PC method only, skip if using APK method)
You need to enable USB debugging option by going to settings, applications and developer options.
Downloads for Rooting LG G3 (D852)
Download Universal ADB Drivers here (If you already have drivers installed on your PC, skip this step). (Android Command Line Tools > SDK Tools Package) Download TWRP Recovery for LG G3 (D852) from here:
TWRP recovery (AndroidFileHost link)
Download SuperSU by Chainfire here. Download Magisk Manager from here.
Make sure you have downloaded the required files (link in the Prerequisites section of this article). Then continue with the steps.
Steps to unlock LG G3 (D852) bootloader
Note: If you have already unlocked the bootloader, skip these steps.
Step 1: First, you need to connect your LG G3 (D852) device to the computer in fastboot mode. You can reboot your device to fastboot with the command in the adb terminal:
Restart adb bootloader
Step 2: Now open the adb terminal on the PC and then just type this command:
fastboot oem unlock-go
Step 3: Then issue this command:
fastboot oem unlock-go
At this stage, your device will restart automatically. Now you can root LG G3 (D852) since your device’s bootloader is already unlocked.
Steps to Flash/Install TWRP on LG G3 (D852)
Step 1: Suppose you have already downloaded Platform Tools from Android SDK (SDK Manager) Platform Tools on your PC. The platform tools include the necessary adb and fastboot binaries.
Step 2: Make sure the drivers are installed on your computer. Then continue to the next step.
Note: If developer settings and USB debugging settings are already enabled on your device as suggested in the Prerequisites section, just skip step 3 and step 4 and follow step 5 directly.
Step 3: Now enable developer settings on your LG G3 (D852) device. To achieve the same, simply navigate to Settings -> About and then find “Build Number” and then tap “Build Number” seven times. This will enable developer settings on your device.
Step 4: If you already have USB debugging, skip this step. If this is not the case, open the developer options and enable the USB debugging option.
Step 5: Now open command prompt in computer/adb terminal and just type command:
Restart adb bootloader
Step 6: Your device should not have entered fastboot mode. Now copy the TWRP.img file downloaded in the Prerequisites section to the same folder where the adb and fastboot binaries are located. Rename the file to “twrp.img” and then enter this command:
Fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
and then run this command, type:
Fastboot restart
Step 7 (Important): Some devices may not automatically replace the custom recovery on first boot. You can search Google for keyboard shortcuts to put your device into recovery mode. After running the “Fastboot Reboot” command, hold down the correct key combination to put the device into TWRP mode. Once the device boots into TWRP mode, the TWRP will automatically patch the stock ROM to prevent the chance of stock recovery replacing TWRP.
After typing Fastboot Reboot, hold the key combination and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP has started, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don’t follow this step, you will have to repeat the installation.
Procedure to Root LG G3 (D852) / Install Magisk or SuperSU
Make sure you’ve downloaded SuperSU or Magisk Manager (link in the Prerequisites section of this article). Then continue with the steps.
Warning: you can use either Magisk Manager or Super SU, but only one, so choose wisely. Go for Magisk Manager if you’re not sure.
Step 1: Transfer the downloaded SuperSU or Magisk Manager file to the internal memory/SD card of your LG G3 (D852) smartphone.
Step 2: Now just boot into recovery. You can optionally back up the stock ROM via the TWRP interface. However, I would recommend backing up the stock ROM. Because if the process fails, you can flash the stock ROM.
Step 3: Tap “Install” and then navigate to the “SuperSU.zip” or “magisk.zip” file and swipe to confirm the flash process (at the bottom of the screen). The Magisk/SuperSU flash process has started and will take a few seconds.
Congratulations, now you have rooted the LG G3 (D852) and also flashed the TWRP. Now you can install Xposed Framework and customize your smartphone to your liking. If you want to check, you can download and check root status through Root Checker app.

Look in the Canada D852 folder. Those roms that have “20F” in their name are Lollipop.
LGUP should have no problem flashing the kdz above, which will return you to Lollipop. From there you then root and upgrade to MM. Download a standard Lollipop kdz from the links given in the OP of this xda thread: Look in the Canada D852 folder. The ROMs that have “20F” in their name are lollipop. LGUP should have no problem flashing the kdz above, which will bring you back to lollipop. From there you then root and upgrade to MM. Click to enlarge… Click to reduce

Hello, I’m trying to figure this all out. I have D852 with Fido (pretty sure I need the files from Rogers) on MM Stock and I want to go back to Lollipop to root and install CM12.1 or CM13. Going to the links provided I can’t find a lollipop file for Rogers. The ones listed are v10, so I’m assuming these files are Kit Kat’s. What should I do to go to Lollipop? Can I use the Telus listed as V20, so Lollipop? Thanks
