Instagram is bringing back a chronologically ordered feed option, parent company Meta said Wednesday, after years of user outcry to bring back the popular feature.

“We want you to be able to make Instagram the best experience possible, and giving you ways to quickly see what you’re most interested in is an important step in that direction,” the company said in a blog post.

The app will also introduce a “favorites” feed, it said.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri first said the timed option could come back at a December 2021 congressional hearing. The app switched to engagement-based photo rankings in users’ feeds in 2016.

“We have focused for a number of years on how to give people more control over their experiences, e.g. B. Favorites, which puts your favorite accounts at the top of your feed,” Mosseri told senators during a hearing on protecting children online. “Another thing we’ve been working on for months is a Chron feed. I wish I had a specific month to give you, but right now we’re aiming for early next year.”

Without raising your expectations, let me get this straight. There is no direct way to quickly scroll up in Instagram Direct Messages (DMs). Luckily, you can read your Instagram messages from the start. To do this, you need to download Instagram data in JSON format and convert the JSON messages into a readable format.

Download Instagram data

You need a computer to download Instagram data as the feature is not available for the mobile apps.

Step 1: Open Instagram website on your PC via any browser and log in with your credentials. From the Instagram home page, click the profile icon at the top.

When you find the right person, right-click the conversation option and select Expand All from the menu.

All items under Conversations will open. Scroll down and you can check the first message.

2. Convert JSON to CSV format

Another way to view and read JSON is to convert it to a CSV file. To do this, open the website aconvert.com and click on Choose file. Navigate to the messages.json file in the Instagram folder. Make sure the target format is CSV. Then click Convert Now.

Wait for the data to be converted. You can find the CSV file under Conversion result. Right-click the file and choose “Save Link As” to download it to your PC.

Now open the downloaded file in Excel. Here you will find all your messages. To make it easier to read, let’s extract the line with the necessary messages.
