Now you’ll see your follow feed chronologically, much like Instagram did years ago before it introduced the algorithms aimed at optimizing engagement and time spent on the app.

You can tap Back at any time to return to the default algorithm feed.

The chronological Instagram feed is finally rolling out to all users. The Meta-owned instant messaging app brought back the chronological feed a few days ago, giving users more choice and control over what they see. This feature allows users to view posts based on their interests and favorites. Instagram used to mix the newest posts with older ones, making it difficult to guess which posts are actually new. But now users can switch to chronological feed. Here’s everything you need to know about the chronological Instagram feed
What is the chronological Instagram feed?
Instagram has actually added two new chronological feeds – “Following” and “Favorites”. They allow users to filter posts and accounts from which they want to see future posts. When you select “Follow,” users will see posts from all the accounts they follow in chronological order, just like when they first launched Instagram.
On the other hand, the favorites feed allows users to add up to 50 accounts and follow their posts in chronological order. However, you can only add the accounts you already follow.
Can the chronological feed be set as the default?
No, as of now, the chronological feed cannot be set as the default feed on Instagram. You have to switch to it manually. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
Why did Instagram get rid of chronological order?
Instagram is bringing back its chronological feed, which it got rid of in 2016. The app has been using an engagement-based ranking, which has become controversial. The algorithm has been found to prioritize divisiveness, violence, and misinformation.

Instagram is bringing back a chronologically ordered feed option, parent company Meta said Wednesday, after years of user outcry to bring back the popular feature.
“We want you to be able to make Instagram the best experience possible, and giving you ways to quickly see what you’re most interested in is an important step in that direction,” the company said in a blog post.
The app will also introduce a “favorites” feed, it said.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri first said the timed option could come back at a December 2021 congressional hearing. The app switched to engagement-based photo rankings in users’ feeds in 2016.
“We have focused for a number of years on how to give people more control over their experiences, e.g. B. Favorites, which puts your favorite accounts at the top of your feed,” Mosseri told senators during a hearing on protecting children online. “Another thing we’ve been working on for months is a Chron feed. I wish I had a specific month to give you, but right now we’re aiming for early next year.”
Engagement-based rankings rank content based on how likely users are to engage with those posts. Mosseri said at the hearing that engagement-based rankings are a way to connect people to the content they might find most engaging.
But they’ve become a contentious issue, with critics saying they’ve helped spawn clickbait articles or stories that news outlets write to grab readers’ attention. And engagement-based rankings were also found to prioritize violent, toxic, fake, and politically divisive content.
Engagement-based ranking can also result in days-old posts showing up in the app instead of new content, which frustrates users.
Instagram and its parent company Facebook (now called Meta) have specifically leveled criticism at their algorithms.
Former whistleblower Frances Haugen shared documents with the press and Congress that revealed, among other things, that Facebook employees were concerned that changing the algorithm would encourage sensational content. An internal memo revealed that Facebook made the change because people were using the app less.
Facebook, now known as Meta, has disputed many of the findings from the trove of documents, saying they do not fully encompass its efforts to combat bad actors and promote mental health.
When Instagram swapped its chronological feed for an algorithmic one in 2016, it said: “The order of the photos and videos in your feed is based on your likelihood of being interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting, and the freshness of the post. Initially, we’re focusing on optimizing the order – all posts will still be there, just in a different order.”

How can I read old Instagram DMS without scrolling?
Once you have found the right person, right-click on the conversation option and select Expand all from the menu. All the items under conversations will open up. Scroll down and you will be able to check the first message.
How to get to your archive on Instagram and access old posts and stories for new use
In the real world – or should I say the online world – it’s different. When you need to read old messages from the beginning on Instagram, you have to scroll for hours to get to the first message. Nobody wants that. Then how do you get to the top?
Well, that’s what we’re going to tell you here. Without further ado, let’s see how to get to the first message on Instagram
Quickly scroll to the top of the message thread
Without raising your expectations, let me get this straight. There is no direct way to quickly scroll up in Instagram Direct Messages (DMs). Luckily, you can read your Instagram messages from the start. To do this, you need to download Instagram data in JSON format and convert the JSON messages into a readable format.
Here are the steps in detail.
Download Instagram data
You need a computer to download Instagram data as the feature is not available for the mobile apps.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open Instagram website on your PC via any browser and log in with your credentials. From the Instagram home page, click the profile icon at the top.
Step 2: On your profile page, click the settings gear icon next to Edit Profile. In the pop-up that appears, click Privacy & Security.
Step 3: On the Privacy and Security page, scroll down and click Request Download under Data Download.
Step 4: Your email ID will be pre-filled. Click the Next button.
Step 5: You will be asked to enter your password. Do that and click the Request Download button. That’s it. Now sit back and wait for an email from Instagram. If you encounter any problem while downloading the data, read our detailed guide.
View downloaded Instagram data
The downloaded data from Instagram is in ZIP format. Download and extract the ZIP file to your PC. Your PC will create a new folder with the same name as the ZIP file. Open it. You will find different folders with images and videos where the files are in JSON format.
If you notice you have a direct folder and a message file. The Instant Folder contains all your photos and videos sent/received via Direct Messages (DMs). For now, however, we’re dealing with the message file.
You can open a JSON file with Notepad. And if you do, the data won’t make any sense, especially if your inbox is overflowing. Therefore, we need to convert the message file into an easy-to-read format.
Convert Instagram JSON to human readable format
There are three ways to decode the JSON data.
1. Tree view
Open the messages.json file in Notepad and copy all the data. Now visit any website that displays JSON data in an expandable tree structure. I tried JSONViewer and it worked fine.
Open the website and paste the data you copied above under the Text tab. Then click the Viewer tab next to the Text tab.
You will see several entries with a plus icon next to them. Click the icon to view the data, which includes Participants and Conversation. Find the participant whose messages you want to read from the beginning.
When you find the right person, right-click the conversation option and select Expand All from the menu.
All items under Conversations will open. Scroll down and you can check the first message.
2. Convert JSON to CSV format
Another way to view and read JSON is to convert it to a CSV file. To do this, open the website aconvert.com and click on Choose file. Navigate to the messages.json file in the Instagram folder. Make sure the target format is CSV. Then click Convert Now.
Wait for the data to be converted. You can find the CSV file under Conversion result. Right-click the file and choose “Save Link As” to download it to your PC.
Now open the downloaded file in Excel. Here you will find all your messages. To make it easier to read, let’s extract the line with the necessary messages.
extract messages
Step 1: Click the New Sheet icon at the bottom of Excel to add a sheet in the Excel file you downloaded earlier.
Step 2: Open the first sheet again and find the person whose DMs you want to read from the beginning. Highlight and copy this line and the first line with the headings.
Step 3: Go to the second sheet and right click on the first blank cell. From the Transpose menu, select Present under Paste Options. You will see that the columns have been converted to rows, making the messages easier to read.
3. View as PDF
If you don’t like the CSV format, you can also convert the messages to PDF. To do this, save the newly created Excel sheet (one with the transposed data) in PDF format. To do this, go to File > Save As. Select PDF from the drop down box.
Does Instagram data download contain deleted messages?
no The downloaded data will not include your deleted messages.

The method may look long and daunting, but it isn’t. You just need to have a little patience and then follow our guide.

How do you go back in years on Instagram?
Check Instagram Memories
Open the Instagram menu on your profile, and tap Archive. From there, select Stories and scroll to the bottom of the screen — you’ll see a post that you shared on this day in previous years.
How to get to your archive on Instagram and access old posts and stories for new use
Unfortunately, Instagram does not offer a native search function for old content or photos that you have posted on the social media platform. Instead, you can only look up account names, hashtags, and locations that have been geotagged. When you have thousands of Instagram posts because you share every single detail of your life on the app (guilty!), it can take time to find the post you’re looking for, especially if you don’t know when you shared it. If you don’t want to sit and scroll all day, that’s understandable – you can get creative with some workarounds, although these aren’t super quick fixes. Still, these solutions are a little easier than mindlessly scrolling and squinting at image previews, and they can save you some time when trying to find an old Instagram post.
1 Find Hashtags Ayana Lage This suggestion works best if you use niche hashtags in your posts — for example, I used the same hashtag for all the pictures I shared from my wedding, so it’s easier to look up that hashtag instead through my feed to scroll. However, if you’ve been posting with popular tags, this isn’t the fastest way to browse old posts.
2 Use Instagram Insights If you have an Instagram business account, you can use Insights to narrow down old posts. Go to your profile, open the Instagram menu in the top right corner of the screen, then tap Insights. From there, under Posts, tap View All. You can sort posts by how many comments and likes they received, which can help you find an old post that got a lot of engagement relatively quickly.
3 Check Instagram Memories Ayana Lage This won’t help you if you’re looking for a specific post, but if you just want to see old things you’ve posted, checking Instagram Memories is a quick way to do it. Open the Instagram menu on your profile and tap Archive. From there, select Stories and scroll to the bottom of the screen – you’ll see a post you’ve shared on that day in years past.

Instagram is finally giving users back the coveted chronological feed. Back in 2016, Instagram decided to remove the chronological feed, which displays posts in order of most recently published content. It switched to the algorithm-based feed, showing posts it thinks would interest you the most. But Instagram is now testing new feed layouts and one of them is a chronological one. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri shared the update on Twitter about the new types of feeds being tested. It should be available to users in the next few weeks, and the official launch is slated for the first half of this year. Open the Instagram app and tap the “Instagram” logo. A drop-down menu will appear with three options – Home, Following, Favorites. Select “Following” from the list to get the chronological feed. Instagram now only shows posts from the accounts you follow, in chronological order. You’ll also see the different feed options at the top if you scroll down the app. To switch back to the current one, do the same and select “Home”. If you only want to see posts from selected accounts, you can select “Favorites”. You must manually add accounts to your favorites list. However, there is a catch. If you go to either Favorites or the following feed, you won’t be able to see Stories. To do this, you must return to the current feed. It is not confirmed if this is a bug or part of the final release. The chronological feed was one thing Instagram was dying to bring back, despite years of user demand. However, Mosseri confirmed that the company was working on a chronological feed during a Senate hearing last December, amid concerns that Instagram could harm minors.
