Scrolling on desktop and laptop computers is typically done with a mouse (often with a built-in scroll wheel) or a touchpad. Mobile devices are usually scrolled with a finger or a stylus.
What is used to scroll up and down the page?
Scrolling with a keyboard
The most common way to scroll with a keyboard is by using the arrow keys. The up and down arrows are used to scroll vertically while the left and right arrows will scroll horizontally. In some cases, the space bar can also be used to scroll down a page.
Key used to scroll down a computer screen
Scrolling is considered one of the basic methods of user navigation. The scrolling can be done in a variety of increments. Some applications can be scrolled line by line or page by page. Most browser and application windows are freely scrollable with certain devices, namely mice, keyboards, touchpads and touch screens.
Vertical scrolling vs horizontal scrolling
There are two types of scrolling: vertical and horizontal. Vertical scrolling scrolls a page up and down. This is the most common type of scrolling because most websites and applications fit the width of a window but not the height.
Horizontal scrolling is scrolling from side to side. This is often the case in extensible spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. However, some websites and applications do not automatically adjust to the width of a window if it is too small, which also requires horizontal scrolling.
options for scrolling
Browsers and applications provide scrolling capabilities tailored to the user experience of the devices they are accessed on. Here are different ways to scroll across different device types.
Mouse scrolling
Virtually all windows have a scroll bar either on the right side of the window for vertical scrolling or at the bottom of the window for horizontal scrolling. Using a computer mouse, users can click and drag the scroll bar in either direction to change their view of the content.
Most modern mice are also equipped with a scroll wheel located between the left and right mouse buttons. Rolling the wheel up and down on a selected window allows the user to scroll vertically.
Scrolling with a keyboard
The most common way to scroll with a keyboard is to use the arrow keys. The up and down arrows are used to scroll vertically while the left and right arrows scroll horizontally. In some cases, the spacebar can also be used to scroll down a page.
Scrolling with a touchpad
Most touchpads built into laptops are designed to use two-finger scrolling. By placing two fingers on the touchpad and moving them together along either axis, the user can move the page in the appropriate direction.
Touchpads also have the ability to click the cursor. This functionality can be used to click and drag scroll bars like a computer mouse.
Scrolling with a touch screen
On touchscreen devices, users can scroll by dragging the page vertically, horizontally, and in some cases diagonally with their fingers.
How do I scroll down without a mouse?
Move your fingers between the top and bottom of your touchpad to scroll up and down, or move your fingers across the touchpad to scroll sideways. Be careful to space your fingers a bit apart. If your fingers are too close together, they just look like one big finger to your touchpad.

Open the activity overview and start typing using Mouse & Touchpad. Click Mouse & touchpad to open the control panel. Make sure the touchpad switch in the touchpad area is on. Turn on the Two-finger scrolling switch.
When this is selected, one-finger tap and drag works as usual, but dragging two fingers across any part of the touchpad will scroll instead. Drag your fingers between the top and bottom of your touchpad to scroll up and down, or drag your fingers across the touchpad to scroll sideways. Be sure to keep your fingers slightly apart. If your fingers are too close together, they just look like one big finger to your touchpad.
How do I scroll with mouse?
You might see a small wheel on your mouse, located between the left and right mouse buttons. This is what is known as the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel can be rotated by your index finger and used to move up and down a document or a webpage.

This demonstration video is approximately 31 seconds long. It shows how to use the mouse to scroll up and down a web page.
Once the video starts, the intro panel will disappear and we will see that the screen is split in two. On the left is an animation of a web page that is too big to fit on the screen. Text appears on the right, representing the script for the voiceover track.
Voiceover: “Use the mouse to move the cursor over the scroll bar panel.”
The left panel shows the mouse pointer moving to the right edge of the web page and hovering over the scroll bar panel.
Voiceover: “Then you need to hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor down. You will see the page scroll down.”
The left panel displays the mouse pointer, click and hold the scrollbar panel and drag down to see more of the page content. We observe how the cursor drags and releases the scrollbar box all the way to the bottom of the page.
Voiceover: “Last thing you have to do is press and hold the left mouse button again and then move the cursor up. You will see the page scroll up.”
The left panel shows the mouse pointer clicking the scrollbar box again, this time dragging to the very top of the page.
video ends.

You can easily reverse touchpad scrolling
Thankfully, Microsoft knows there are two camps when it comes to scrolling: those who scroll up to go up and those who scroll down to go up. As a result, it’s pretty easy to reverse touchpad scrolling in Windows 10.
Reversing mouse scrolling is more difficult
However, if your mouse wheel is scrolling in the wrong direction, it’s less intuitive. You need to dig around in the registry and change an entry there to reverse your mouse movement. But don’t worry – today we will show you step by step how to scroll backwards in Windows 10 for both types of input devices. Let’s start:
How to reverse touchpad scrolling in Windows 10
As mentioned earlier, the process to reverse touchpad scrolling in Windows 10 is quite simple. You don’t need any special tools, just your trusty Settings app and about thirty seconds of your time: Open Settings
Press the Start button and then click the settings cog above the power button. Alternatively, press Windows + I. Click on “Devices”
Click Touchpad in the sidebar and reverse the scrolling direction in the main panel
Your touchpad scrolling direction takes the form of a drop-down menu under the “Scrolling Direction” heading. You can choose between two options: “move down scrolls down” and “move down scrolls up”. Choosing one or the other will determine whether or not your scroll is inverted.
How to invert mouse roll in Windows 10
As mentioned earlier, to reverse mouse scrolling in Windows 10, you need to use the registry. That is, unless your mouse comes with its own driver software. If you have a Logitech, Steelseries, Razer, or other gaming mouse, there’s a good chance it does, so check there first. If not, editing the registry is probably your best bet. Before you do this, we recommend reading through our guide to safely editing your registry and backing up your registry. The chances of something going wrong if you follow our instructions are slim, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. However, before you can start editing your registry, you need to get the device instance path for your mouse. This is necessary to find the correct device in your registry editor. Here’s how to do it: Open Device Manager
Press Start and then type “Device Manager”. Click on the top result. Open your mouse’s properties window
ng> Scroll down the list in Device Manager until you find the “Mice and other pointing devices” section. Expand it, right-click and press “Properties”. If multiple mice are listed with the same name, “HID Compliant Mouse”, check the Manufacturer and Location fields in the Properties menu. It should show the brand/manufacturer of your device. Open the Details tab and select Device Instance Path
Note the path of your device instance (starting with “VID”)
Open the registry editor
Press Start and then type “regedit”. Click on the top result. Navigate to the HID key and use the instance path to locate your device
In your registry editor’s navigation bar, paste the following: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID . Expand the HID key and scroll down the list until you see a key that starts with VID and contains the instance path you noted earlier. Click the down arrow next to the folder icon to expand the folder. Expand the next key and select “Device Parameters”
In the main pane, double-click the FlipFlopWheel entry and change its value data to 1
If you change the value data, the mouse scroll direction will be reversed in Windows 10 once you press “OK” and restart your PC. If it doesn’t work after a reboot, you probably changed the wrong mouse scroll direction – check your instance path again.
How to customize Windows 10 Precision touchpad gestures and change mouse sensitivity
Now that you know how to change the scroll direction of your Windows 10 mouse/touchpad, you might want to choose different settings. Our previous guides show you how to adjust Windows 10 Prevision touchpad settings, as well as your mouse sensitivity and speed.
Which allows you to scroll down one page?
With a keyboard, you can use the up or down arrow keys to scroll a few lines at a time. The Page Up and Page Down keys or the spacebar scroll down one page at a time. Most computers today include a mouse with a wheel or button, allowing you to scroll up and down, and in some cases, left to right.
Key used to scroll down a computer screen
A vertical or horizontal bar at the far right or bottom of a window that allows you to move the window’s viewing area up, down, left, or right. Most people today are familiar with scrollbars because they need to scroll up and down on almost every internet webpage.
Overview of the scroll bar
Below is an image of a Microsoft Windows window with a vertical and a horizontal scroll bar.
Scrolling and using the scroll bar
Scroll bars are used using the mouse, touchpad or keyboard. With a mouse, you can move the scrollbar by clicking the scroll arrows at either end of the scrollbars. You can also click an empty part of the scrollbar or click and drag the scroll box. With a keyboard, you can use the up or down arrow keys to scroll a few lines at a time. The Page Up and Page Down keys or the spacebar scroll down one page at a time.
Most computers today have a mouse with a wheel or button that allows you to scroll up and down and, in some cases, left to right. For more information about these mice, see the IntelliMouse definition.
Tip On an Apple computer, some programs, such as B. Safari, may not display a scrollbar. To scroll up and down in these programs, touch two fingers on your touchpad or touch and drag your mouse up or down.
Tip For more methods of scrolling with a laptop touchpad, visit our touchpad page.
How do I use or enable the horizontal scroll bar?
The horizontal scrollbar is often missing or disabled because the text or other displayed content wraps or resizes to prevent horizontal scrolling. For example, this website has no horizontal scrolling as it is designed to fit the screen. If you are viewing a horizontally scrolling page, you can scroll to the right by clicking the right scroll arrow on the horizontal scroll bar.
Tip To enable horizontal scrolling in a long text document, you can turn off line wrapping. When working with images or other documents, zooming in also allows horizontal scrolling.
How many scrollbars are in a window?
Often there is only one scrollbar in a window, the vertical scrollbar, which allows you to scroll up and down in a window. Many programs automatically wrap the text in a window when you resize the window or zoom in on the document. Programs with a fixed window size or without line wrapping display a horizontal scroll bar when the window is resized. There would be two scrollbars for these programs, one horizontal and one vertical scrollbar.
Should I use “scroll bar” or “scroll bar” in my writing?
Both “scrollbar” and “scrollbar” are correct depending on the context and place of their use or the style guide followed. For most style guides, “scrollbar” is used as two words when describing the bar or feature that allows you to scroll up, down, left, or right. When referring to a configuration, object, or setting, “Scrollable” is used as one word.

Becoming obsolete
Since the advent of scroll mice, which use a wheel to scroll vertically and horizontally, the scroll bar is being used less and less in desktop applications. Additionally, tablet and smartphone content is scrolled with fingers, and a scrollbar has never been a natural part of the user interface. See scroll mouse.
