Our plantation roller shutters can be customized with three different slat widths, 2½”, 3½” or 4½”. The narrowest width is great for traditional homes, such as B. Colonial style, while a wider width complements modern farmhouses and other contemporary home styles. The wider width also allows for more visibility, as well as more light and air.

Slip your fingers behind the clasp and gently pull the clasp an inch or two away from the face. Use the hacksaw to cut the clasp. Scissors are also good for cutting the locos in tight spots. If pruning shears or a hacksaw aren’t available, slide the chisel behind the clasp so the tip of the chisel rests on the plastic nail. Gently tap it with a hammer. Hitting the chisel with too much force can damage your home’s siding.

The first thing you need to decide is whether you are installing your shutters for decoration only (decorative shutters) or if you want them to actually work (working shutters). All of the shutters on our site can be installed decoratively, but only certain types of shutters can support working shutter hardware, so be careful which shutters you order if you want them to work.

Decorative Shutters When measuring for decorative shutters, it’s important to keep your goals in mind. Most people install decorative shutters to add color and a touch of personal style to their windows. In this case, it’s best to find decorative shutters that come in a single width that will fit all of your windows.

However, some people insist that their decorative shutters should also look like they can close over the window (although decorative shutters don’t). Although the goal is slightly different here, it’s still perfectly acceptable.

A third and broader goal is architectural consistency. It is important to understand that architecture is a regional science. To add real value to your home and give it an appealing vibe, it should look like it belongs in your neighborhood. In some parts of the country it is common to install 12 inch wide decorative shutters on windows that are 8 feet wide. In other areas, it’s common to measure the glass of the window and install exterior blinds that appear to cover the glass entirely but not the window trim. The most common way to measure decorative shutters is to measure the window trim and install shutters that take up the full height of the trim. The best advice we can give you is to start by taking a walk or drive around your area to see how you can “fit in” your home, paying careful attention to the homes that are made of similar materials and similar in design to your home.

As a rule of thumb, if you happen to be the first person in your area to install decorative external blinds, measure the entire window, including the ledges, both vertically and horizontally.

When using vinyl shutters on windows wider than 50 inches, we recommend using double-width vinyl shutters. However, if you prefer not to use the bi-fold shutter style, you can use 18-inch wide shutters and it still looks reasonably good.

If you prefer to make your external blinds look like they close over the windows, you can find a width that is almost 50% the size of the glass and window frame, excluding the window trim. Because vinyl shutters don’t have as much flexibility in terms of shutter width, it’s best if the side of the exterior shutter is narrower than 50% of the window width.

Roller shutter height In most cases, the most suitable height of decorative roller shutters is from the top edge to the bottom edge of the window trim. If there is a sill at the bottom of the window and you are installing vinyl shutters, it is important to leave a gap of at least 1/4 inch to allow the vinyl material to expand and contract. Of course, this does not apply to other roller shutter materials.

Many houses are built with different window heights on the first floor than on the second floor. Be sure to measure each window before placing your order for external blinds.

Operable shutters In order for your shutters to actually work, you need to be more careful when measuring your windows. Take the time to measure accurately as this will ensure the shutters perform as you expect.

Measure your windows as if the shutters were actually closed above them. Measuring windows for operable shutters requires you to measure both the width and height at 3 different points as many windows are not perfectly square. Usually you want the roller shutter to cover part of the window trim in addition to the window frame and glass. For a brick home with recessed windows, you typically want the functional shutter to cover the entire opening in the brick, not just the window itself.

Shutter Width Measure the shutter width at the top, center, and bottom of the window from left to right as shown in the illustration. If the width is not the same at each of these points, use the SMALLEST measurement of the three.

This measurement is then divided by 2 to give you your operable shutter width. For example, if your window width is 27 inches wide at the narrowest point, you should order 13½ inch wide shutters (27 ÷ 2 = 13.5).

Roller shutter height Measure the roller shutter height on the left, middle and right side of the window opening from the top edge of the window to the bottom edge without window sills. If the heights vary at each of these points, use the SMALLEST of the three measurements. This measurement is the height of the roller shutter that you need to order.

Remember, measure twice and order once!

In which direction should slats point?

Many customers ask us which direction fixed slats should go. Here’s an answer for anyone who was wondering…

There is an age-old question as to which direction the slats should face in fixed slat shutters.

(This also applies to operable slats, but these can of course be changed according to individual preferences.)

The short answer is that they should face down and backwards. Of course, this works when we’re all thinking about the open shutters, and much like the backslash/forward-slash confusion that makes us hover over the symbol on our keyboard for a split second, we process the information before we strike the key.

One person’s backslash could be another person’s forward slash. It all depends on the perspective.

Direction of the open blind slats

Properly installing a roller shutter with fixed blinds should have the roller shutter slats pointing down and backwards when the roller shutter is open (when it is not covering the window). This allows rain or other water to fall through the slats and behind the roller shutter, avoiding accumulation or formation in the roller shutter itself or in front of the window area.

The picture on the right shows the correct orientation of the fixed louvers when they are open on the house.

Closed shutters slat direction

When the shutters are closed over the windows, they would then face down and out, away from the window, so water hitting the shutters would drain forward and away from the area between the shutter and the window.

Plantation shutters are an incredibly popular but expensive window treatment. There are many variations on the market; some good and some bad. Some companies have decided to capitalize on the popularity of roller blinds by undercutting their competitors and offering an inferior product at a lower price. We’ve shared our tips to clear up the confusion.

1. WARRANTY

The guarantee that a retailer is willing to give on its products speaks volumes. If a company offered you a high price with a 15-25 year warranty, it would clearly be a better product than the cheaper option with only a 2 year warranty. If you were offered a “lifetime warranty,” ask for specific parameters about what is covered and what constitutes a “lifetime” warranty.

2. WOOD vs PVC vs ALUMINIUM

Wooden, PVC and aluminum shutters all have their place in the market.

Aluminum shutters are great for outdoor and wet areas. However, they do not work well thermally.

Wood (or traditional plantation shutters) offer great thermal benefits. Certain woods are forestry certified, meaning they’re ideal for the environmentally conscious. Wooden shutters are perfect for historic homes with non-square windows as they can be adjusted on site if needed. They are also great for large windows as they can be made larger than any other material. Wood is also great for creating shaped shutters for irregular windows. Be warned though; Wooden shutters should never be used in rooms with high humidity, moisture or mold as they will swell and rot from the core.

PVC roller shutters are thermally beneficial and cost effective. They are great for all areas of the home including wet areas. PVC can be manufactured in a range of custom shapes to fit irregular windows and looks just as good to the naked eye as wood. Beware; PVC shutters are quite heavy and therefore have some limitations. PVC shutters may require multiple panels to cover a large window or door as the slats can sag over too large an area. Even heavy PVC panels can detach from the hinges over time if they are too big.

3. LIGHT CONTROL

Regardless of what a retailer may tell you, plantation blinds are not a 100 percent blockout product. While they block a large amount of outside light and offer complete privacy, there is still a small amount of “light bleed” around the slats.

4. NOISE CONTROL

Roller shutters offer some acoustic benefits, but they don’t completely block sound. They definitely won’t help reduce echoes in a room like fabric treatments do. The only window treatments that effectively block external noise are fully lined and quilted curtains.

5. THE MADE IN CHINA TABOO.

“Made in China” is always a tricky subject. Most plantation shutters are manufactured overseas due to lower production costs and accessibility of workers and technology. Ask your dealer if they know anything about the factory that makes their shutters. We only sell shutters that are made in factories that offer excellent conditions and fair pay for all workers. They also have strict quality control standards to ensure a superior product.

There are increasing signs that winters are getting colder. Homeowners are looking for new ways to reduce heat loss to help manage their escalating heating bills.

Roller shutters are an excellent way to improve the energy efficiency of your home. According to a recent study by The English Heritage, closed roller shutters reduce heat loss through a window by more than 50%. We have a range of effective solutions to reduce your heating bills.

We are all looking for ways to save energy and reduce heat loss. Window coverings can reduce energy loss through the windows, reduce heating costs and improve home comfort.

Are roller shutters energy efficient?

Interior blinds are one of the most energy efficient window treatments you can use. They help reduce heat loss in the winter months and reduce heat gain in the summer. Shutters are excellent insulators, trapping the cold air between your shutter and the window.

According to government agency Energy.Gov, about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. Most types of window treatments result in energy savings, but the exact savings depend on the type of fixing, the time of year, the climate, and how the fixing is used.

As previously mentioned, English Heritage, which supports national and global efforts to reduce energy consumption, conducted a study of the thermal performance of wooden sash windows which produced some interesting results in relation to plantation style interior blinds.

As many original Georgian and Victorian windows remain, they funded research at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in collaboration with Historic Scotland.

They fitted the GCU with a traditional double-hung vertical sash window in poor condition. As part of their research, they looked at the effects of adding curtains, blinds or shutters to the window and the effects it had.

Do shutters prevent heat loss?

Shutters are an excellent way to prevent heat loss. When the shutters and louvers are closed, they can reduce heat loss through a window by more than 50%. In combination with secondary glazing this can exceed 62%. You can also combine roller shutters with curtains and see even better insulating properties.

Heat loss from a window is complex and the GCU measured the flow through the glass along with the glass and window frame combination. They found the percentage reduction in heat loss by using the different window treatments as follows:

Do shutters keep the heat in?

Roller shutters are a great way to effectively add an insulating layer to your windows. When fully closed, they keep the warm air in your room and block any of those money-stealing drafts. The solid material of shutters offers a more effective solution than blinds or curtains.

It is important to note that solid blinds were used instead of blinds in the study. Solid shutters are in keeping with Georgian and Victorian characteristics. However, due to the lack of slats, they lack versatility and can only be fully opened or fully closed.

However, if we assume that the heat loss reduction of a louvre shutter is somewhere between that of a honeycomb blind and a full shutter, you would still expect a heat loss reduction of more than 50% when they are closed. Due to the nature of a roller shutter, whether slotted or solid, you will find better preservation properties than a blind because the panels of a roller shutter have a surrounding frame that is fixed in the window reveal. This significantly reduces the entry of cold air into the room.

The British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) is the British trade association for roller shutters, blinds and awnings. They have a fantastic website that offers impartial advice on window treatments, among other things.

Solution 1: Solid shutters

When closed, the traditional roller shutter is arguably the best window covering you can install to reduce heat loss.

Solution 2: Louvre shutters with blinds mounted behind them

With the extra layer you provide extra insulation for your home.

Solution 3: Venetian blinds with a curtain held up

This is a similar solution to the one above, but this time with a curtain in front of the roller shutter rather than a blind behind it.

Solution 4: Full-height slat shutters

Full height shutters (shown) cover the entire window as opposed to Café Style which leave half of your window uncovered and therefore do not give you the same level of insulation.

How long does it take to get shutters?

Of course, with the variety of material options from which shutters are made, there are different lead times. A custom roller shutter can take up to 8 weeks or as little as 7-10 business days.

Production time for custom wood blinds is determined by three factors: the shape, whether or not it is a custom stain/color, and the manufacturer. Most wooden shutters are delivered within 4 weeks of order placement. However, if you have a custom bow clasp you would expect a turnaround time of 8 weeks for your clasp.

Another obstacle to delay is getting a custom stain/color for your shutters. This option is worth the wait if you want to match trim color in a bedroom or stained woodwork in a study. Color matching takes an additional 1-2 weeks as a color sample needs to be sent to the manufacturer and in return the manufacturer will send back the color match on a grid for review and acceptance.

Composite shutters have a time frame of 4-6 weeks. This time window varies depending on the needs of the shutters. Ordering composite shutters during the holiday season will have a longer processing time than ordering one month after the holiday. So if you want your shutters before the family arrives for the holidays, order at least 6 weeks before the family is due to arrive.

If you simply cannot wait 4-6 weeks to receive your custom shutters, then vinyl shutters are for you. It ships within 7-10 business days. Not only do vinyl shutters get to you faster, they’re more cost-effective, fire retardant, moisture resistant, and easy to maintain and clean. Well, this is a fastener that can meet everyone’s needs. The only downside with this closure is that it only comes in three colors: white, off white, and beige.

Also, with all types of shutters, remember to add an extra week for installation. The periods indicated above or from the time of ordering to the delivery of the shutters. An installation date will be set by your shutter dealer once your shutters arrive.
