Roll the stocking down to the heel and then insert your foot into the stocking.

After rolling the stocking down your entire leg, adjust it so that there are no wrinkles or creases.

If your skin is dry and making it difficult to put the stocking on, try applying some lotion beforehand, but make sure it’s fully absorbed.

You can also put a little baby powder or cornstarch on your legs to make the stocking slide easier.

If you’re still having trouble putting on and taking off your stockings, you can purchase a butler, gloves, or some other dressing aid

As with any compression therapy product, wash the stocking every day with mild soap and water, then rinse and allow to air dry.

Today I want to debunk some common myths about thigh high stockings.

Over the years, a number of assumptions have been made about thigh highs, many of which have been wrong. I’ve found that people are either unfamiliar with the term or just have a misguided perception of our fabulous fashion accessory.

In any case, I want to try to set things right. Here are 7 common myths about thigh high stockings: debunked…

MYTH #1: Thigh stockings are the same as pantyhose, stockings, or nylons

Contrary to popular belief, thigh high stockings are not the same as pantyhose or nylon stockings. Thigh stockings are two separate material items that are tightened on one leg at the same time. Tights, on the other hand, are a single piece of material consisting of two legs joined by a waistband through a gusset in the middle. In our glossary you will find more technical terms for all types of hosiery.

MYTH #2: Thigh highs are risqué or promiscuous

While thigh-high stockings can help women feel both confident and bold, this fashion accessory is by no means scandalous. When it comes to thigh high stockings, it all depends on how you present and style yourself. When worn with a skirt or dress of the right length, thigh high stockings can be very formal. The band of the hosiery should be worn high on the thigh (hence the name) and is therefore usually hidden by what you are wearing anyway. Because of this, no skin is shown unless you want it to, of course. Just like any other legwear, thigh highs are versatile and can be worn almost anywhere, any time of the year!

MYTH #3: Thigh highs are difficult to maintain

It’s no secret that over-the-knee boots (aka over-the-knee boots) are some of the trickiest shoes to wear.

For some, they’re the kind to stay away from. Others love them too much and wear them with little care that they end up looking trashy.

Yes, we’ve all seen the 1990 American romantic comedy Pretty Woman. And the image of Julia Roberts in her micro mini skirt and super shiny thigh high boots is probably what keeps the majority of women on this planet from trying on that extra “big order”.

Luckily, it’s not difficult to wear knee-high boots without looking trashy.

Thigh-high boots may be considered a fashion gamble, but they’re also devastatingly sexy. If you wear them right (that is, in a tasteful way), the rewards are nigh on priceless.

Keep in mind that these boots are already considered quite a statement, so there really is no need to over-accessorize or add a lot of extras to your outfit.

With that in mind, here are 5 simple tips to follow so you can rock those boots with class.

We don’t lay these out for the experienced stylists, but for the completely clueless and (fashion) confused.

1. Keep away from high gloss

This is a very simple rule to follow. Stick to suede boots. You can go with classic leathers, but avoid those that are glazed or polished to shine.

Forget patent leather, of course. As we’ve said before, thigh-high boots are already a major fashion statement, so you don’t really need to add high-shine drama to get noticed.

Also, the goal is to stop looking like Pretty Woman, right?

2. Create a balance

It’s no secret that short skirts (or dresses) look great with over-the-knee boots — but only in moderation.

Showing off your thighs is very tempting, but keep it to a maximum of 3 inches. If you want to push it, maybe try 5 inch.

Once you’ve done that, remember to cover yourself up.

Go for a long-sleeved mini dress or top off your outfit with a chunky coat or sweater to tone down the sexiness.

3. Keep it monochromatic

The easiest way to wear over the knee boots is to pair them with skinny jeans or leggings.

But do yourself a favor by keeping the ensemble monochromatic. Not only will you look classier, but you’ll also look taller.

For that leg-lengthening effect, try wearing black-on-black.

If you want to be a little playful, try dark tones with some punch or texture to give you just a bit of contrast without making it too obvious.

4. Stay away from extreme heels and platforms

Platforms and sky-high stilettos are great, but you really don’t need those extras with over-the-knee boots.

While it’s a matter of personal preference and opinion, it’s so much easier to rock extra tall boots when they’re not too tall, not too pointy, and with not-so-thin heels.

5. Try other colors

Don’t be afraid to try (thigh-high) boots in other colors. If you’re not that adventurous, go for neutral colors like camel, tan, brown, or gray.

If you want more drama, red and purple boots aren’t that hard to find either.

However, always remember to choose monochromatic so as not to look like your legs are cut in half.

I love boots and wear them often, although we only wear boots for about two months here in Florida, I’ve always loved the look of boots with jeans , trousers, skirts and dresses. I’ve collected several pairs over the years and look forward to wearing them as soon as the weather gets cooler – although I’m often the only person wearing fall clothes here in Florida. I love celebrating the change of season in my home and wardrobe.

Leather over-the-knee boots are worn

Over-the-knee boots, also known as over-the-knee boots or simply over-the-knee boots, are boots that go over the knees to at least mid-thigh. Other terms for this footwear are over-the-knee boots (abbreviated OTK boots; the full term is also used for women’s boots, especially if they are cuffed. Lengths vary from just above the knee to almost to the crotch (referred to as crotch boots or step boots).

Laced leather boots were fashionable for women throughout the Victorian era. By the late 19th century, above-the-knee leather lace-up boots were becoming a trend among London prostitutes who wanted a style that would appeal to foot fetishists and clients interested in finding a dominatrix.[2]

In the Fall 2009 fashion season, thigh high boots were a key fashion accessory of the season, leading to the style being declared a fashion trend in early 2009. The shoe style reached a wider audience through fashion magazine editorials and was featured in two different layouts in the September 2009 issue of US Vogue.[9][10] Numerous high street fashion stores have featured thigh high boots in their fall 2009 collections, and many fashion designers have them in their ready-to-wear collections as well.

Miuccia Prada pushed the boundaries of fashion with her fashion-forward over-the-knee boots.[11] One version even included garters to hang the tops from a belt. Directly behind her was Stella McCartney, [12] wearing three inseam boots with synthetic uppers, following her usual animal-friendly practice. All three had short toes and extreme heels, and one had a multi-patterned pierced upper.

As for couture shoe designers, in Fall 2009 Christian Louboutin launched no less than four different styles – a mid-thigh front lace-up with a molded heel and hidden platform (Supra Fifré), a mid-length, skin-tight boot with a hidden platform , a chunky mid-thigh boot (Contente) and a chunky mid-thigh platform boot. Alongside a heeled over the knee boot with an elasticated cuff just above the knee and two pairs of flat over the knee boots in her couture line, Jimmy Choo’s limited edition capsule collection for H&M[19] included a black leather mid-thigh boot with a four -inch paragraph.

Spring 2009[ edit ]

Givenchy[20] started the over-the-knee boot trend in early 2009 in a flashy off-season fashion with a western-style black leather over-the-knee boot.

Fall 2008[ edit ]

Fendi[21] supported the thigh boot cause in Fall 2008 with a chunky suede boot that featured a metallic leather accent around the ankle of the boot and at the top of the heel. The boot was carried by several different retail outlets and was available in black, brown, taupe and gray.

Autumn 2006[ edit ]

Karl Lagerfeld styled all of his designs in Chanel’s fall 2006 collection[22] with over-the-knee boots. The boots were crafted in a variety of materials, including black suede and various shades of blue denim.

Autumn 2005[ edit ]

Karl Lagerfeld featured the Chanel[23] black leather over-the-knee boot with many of his Fall 2005 designs, which actress Anne Hathaway later wore in The Devil Wears Prada, making her a fashion icon.

Thigh boots as fetish garments date back at least to the 1950’s when Irving Klaw used them in the costuming of the women in his erotic photography. They’ve been a staple of fetish and adult photography ever since. Hold-ups or stay-ups (also known as thigh-high stockings or simply thigh highs in the United States) are stockings with an elastic band at the top that holds the stockings up when worn without the use of a garter belt or garters (British English: Suspenders). Thigh stockings are held by one or more bands sewn on top and lined with silicone on the inside. This ensures that the thigh high stockings stay in place due to the elastic and the friction of the silicone against the skin. The silicone can be rendered ineffective by contact with body lotions, oils and talcum powder as they all reduce the friction of the silicone. Thigh high stockings are designed so that the elastic band applies just the right amount of pressure to the wearer’s thigh, eliminating an uncomfortable tightness or unflattering muffin top effect. Hold-ups are sometimes preferred to tights for hygiene reasons, as they reduce excessive bacterial growth in the groin area due to moisture and heat.

Thigh highs can be chosen due to the classic, popular “stocking top” line, and there are no stocking bumps to show through a skirt or dress. As with stockings and pantyhose, the thickness of thigh-high stockings is measured in deniers.

With the invention of nylon, hold-up stockings became the focus of women’s fashion. While high-end consumers never lost their fascination with silk stockings, their nylon counterparts were so ubiquitous that they eventually christened the entire stocking family. Stockings were popularly referred to as “nylons” in the 1940s.

In the 1960s, hold-up stockings retreated to a more marginal place in women’s fashion. It is believed that the popularity of the miniskirt was a major factor in this. As skirts became shorter and shorter, it became unusual to reveal the top line of stockings, and thigh-high stockings were replaced by tights.

The term “hold-up stockings” was first used by “Pretty Polly” in 1967 for its self-supporting stockings. The term was not registered by the company and has since become a generic trademark for the stocking style.

Manufacturing process [ edit ]

Modern stockings, pantyhose and thigh-high stockings are made either by flat knitting or by using circular knitting machines. Flat knit is the original stocking manufacturing technique of the 1930s to 1950s. After the fabric is made, each thigh panty is sewn individually. The top of the seam has an “end loop,” a small hole that each hemmed thigh has because the machinist turned the piping – the top of the thighs – inside out to finish it off. Once sewn, the stockings are “boarded”. This is a process in which each thigh-high stocking is stretched over a metal flat leg form and “set” with steam. The knit tightens, wrinkles are eliminated and the leg is properly shaped. Because the process is time-consuming, seamed stockings are never cheap. In addition, around a third of the production – especially in the manufacture of fine stockings – is discarded during quality control.

Thigh stockings are now mostly made on circular machines that eliminate back seams by knitting tubes that are then “adjusted” to the shape of the leg. While the first rotary machines produced sheer stockings with reinforced heel pockets, modern machines have eliminated these and offer a better fit regardless of the wearer’s shoe size.

The addition of Lycra to hosiery yarn was perhaps the greatest breakthrough in hosiery manufacturing, resulting in hold-ups that combine elasticity with the ability to hug the leg.[1]
