Starting today, July 31st. It’s been a full year since my debut novel Dear Dragon was published.
What people don’t tell you when it comes to writing a story behind closed doors and getting it published is to sit at the computer, hover your mouse over the send button and question every word you come up with put down on paper at this moment.
People tell you that there is always more to do, you can only do one more draft at a time, but at some point you have to say “enough” and move on to the next step. Determining when this story should be published is far more difficult than just editing another draft.
I don’t know how many times you expect to read this story before publication. I’ve read mine well over twenty times. The number of scenes lost or changed along the way.
Characters were left behind.
Whole storylines were cut out.
The world kept getting bigger.
What was once intended to be a book in its own right became a series, and with the release of the second book just around the corner and the third book already in its second draft, I have a hard time remembering how I got here .
Things get easier. I can say that. My first book took four years to polish, my second book took a year and a half, maybe one? I forgot to write down the start date… and I prefer my second book to my first. I think it’s different, less action, more character moments, but I think it’s better. I think I’m a better writer. I feel I have more confidence in my abilities and have better access to the tools I need.
Also, I haven’t seen anyone talk about all the things you need to learn to be an author besides writing! And no, I don’t mean researching random topics. I mean marketing, you have to market your book and that means understanding social media, that means being confident in front of a camera most of the time, it means speaking clearly; it means writing posts like this; It means you’re okay with people poking fun at your YouTube presence for spending hours working on a video that gets 7 views. You may also want to learn how to manage your author website, how to create promotional collateral, and how to include attractive photos of your book…
Or you could afford to pay other people for all of that. In this case it is good that you create work for others!
That’s a lot of things I’ve had to learn over the past year and I like to think that every book I publish will be better than the last and I’ll be better and better prepared to deal with publishing and marketing .
I learn more every year.
Being an author was really difficult at times: If in about three months nobody bought a book or downloaded one of my freely available stories, it was demotivating and it felt like nobody was giving me a chance.
But I also had so many little moments that felt like I was on top of the world:

First reviews.
My first five star review on Amazon, which I still keep reading to this day because it makes me feel more confident about writing than anything else. Having strangers pointing out everything I’ve done right is just amazing.
The first time someone commented on one of my social media posts, they had clearly read the book and they reminded me that there are people in the world who have read this. This is no longer just my story, other people can experience it.
I’m looking for ARC readers for my second book and people to actually subscribe!
Someone messaged me to say they read my book and liked it.
Finding time to write between school and work, keeping my home clean, and taking care of my health is hard work.
Saving every day of the year so I can afford the cover and proofs I need to publish and market the next book in the series is exhausting.
But I don’t think there’s anything in my daily life that makes me happier than these stories, knowing they’re out there for others to read, and all the little moments I’ve listed above.
I have to accept that the industry isn’t lucrative for most indie writers. It’s trend based and if what you’re writing isn’t what the market is looking for at a given time, you’re mostly writing for yourself. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but I love my stories enough to handle it .
I won’t stop writing even if nobody reads it. I think that’s what passion for something is.
Anyway, to celebrate a full year since Dear Dragon was published, you can get the e-book for free today (July 31st) or tomorrow (August 1st).
I wanted to do more than talk about my feelings and give people a chance to read the book for free, but I couldn’t really think of anything cool.
Especially this summer the heat here in Spain is unbearable and many days I just struggle to catch my breath.
Hopefully next year or sometime soon I’ll find cool ways to celebrate this book and my passion for writing.
