The standard Alexa has about seven mics in a circle that picks up sound from all directions, McCarty says. “The microphones in your Alexa are MEMs microphones – which are extremely sensitive and can detect sound/pressure changes below and above the human hearing range. Because of the way the diaphragm is constructed in these mics, they always pick up sound whether mute is on or not.”
In other words, Alexa can easily record conversations you’re having.

Even if you try to cover or block the Alexa mic’s sound with duct tape or pillows, McCarty says it can be heard despite barriers.
“The best solution is to unplug the power cord to prevent the MEMs microphones from activating,” says McCarty. “Unplugging will be your best bet until Amazon introduces mechanical microphone disconnects in Alexa.”

But why would you want to unplug your Alexa in the first place? Simple: to protect your privacy and security at home.
“There have been several examples where hackers and researchers have been able to cause security issues with Alexa by targeting its microphones,” says McCarty. “For example, these special and extremely sensitive MEMs microphones have been shown to respond to lasers shining on them. Combine this with a specially designed laser intensity modulation – a hacker outside your home could shine a laser through a window at your Alexa and give her commands, e.g. B. Unlock all smart locks or order thousands of products on Amazon.”

It’s even possible to direct subsonic ultrasonics (which you wouldn’t hear) like the laser beam to give silent commands to your Alexa, says McCarty.
“It has also been shown that these MEMs microphones are able to detect unique environmental sounds. So if a hacker were to gain unauthorized remote access to your Alexa, maybe they could detect your physical location with enough data (e.g. air traffic, weather conditions, etc.),” says McCarty. “Multiple Alexas in each room could be used by a remote hacker to determine the location of each room’s occupants when they sleep based on breathing or other clues as to what’s going on near the Alexa.”
The next best thing if you don’t have Alexa is to leave it off when you’re not using it.

It’s tedious but effective: you have to unplug your Echo, leave it for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. Don’t worry, it will reconnect to your network so you don’t have to do any new settings.
Some people find they have to repeat this process, but it worked fine for me on the first try.

If restarting your Echo doesn’t work, it could be an internet connection issue. If you’ve placed your Echo too far from a router or it’s subject to interference (e.g. microwave ovens), it will either take longer or stop working.

Sometimes firmware errors can cause apps to get stuck at a certain stage and save in the phone storage. The quickest way to ensure your app has the files it needs to run is to uninstall and reinstall it.

To restart your Echo, unplug it and let it sit for about 30 to 60 seconds. When the time is up, plug the device back in and wait for your Echo to boot up and be ready to use.
8. Reset your Echo device
