Care for permanent hair extensions

The third and final step in protecting your hair from damage is in your hands! After you have chosen your perfect method and used it correctly, it is now up to you to ensure that it is properly maintained and cared for. Maintenance and repositioning appointments are essential with permanent hair extensions to keep them looking their best and prevent natural hair loss. On average, people lose up to 100 hairs a day, which is completely natural. However, when you have hair extensions on, those hairs don’t fall out entirely but get caught in the bonds attached to your hair. As your own hair grows, your extensions will move with it. After 6-8 weeks your extensions are holding on to less hair than some of your own hair would have fallen out naturally. Because of this, the weight of the attachment causes more tension in this area. Removing and repositioning the hair allows this natural shedding to fall out of the hair and ensures that you are never putting too much pressure on your hair which could eventually lead to more shedding. There’s a lot of confusion between “maintenance” dates and “new hires” and we’re here to explain the difference. A maintenance appointment is almost like a check-up. It is a service that should be performed no later than 6 weeks after your permanent hair extension application, sooner for first time users. At this appointment, your stylist will check for and remove tangles, push up any loose or drooping hair extensions, and replace any that have fallen out. It’s also a good excuse for a thorough shampoo and deep conditioning, as it can be a chore to do on your own hair if you have extensions.

A repositioning and removal involves completely removing the hair extensions and reattaching them with new rings. This service takes longer than a standard maintenance appointment and should also include a full cleaning and treatment to restore the scalp and hair. We have listed below the time frames and service expectations at a maintenance and repositioning appointment for each type as they may vary by method.

Hair Weft – You should return no later than 6 weeks after your application to have your rings re-tightened if you have had the Micro-Ring Weft or LA Weave. New rings should not need to be used at this appointment. If the hair has been sewn in, this appointment is only to check for tangling. No later than 10-12 weeks after your application, your weft should be completely removed, washed and repositioned with new rings and braids if necessary.

Tapes – Tape in hair extensions do not require a maintenance appointment as they should be removed and either re-taped or replaced with new hair every 6-8 weeks. Still, it’s never a bad idea to return after a few weeks just to check for tangles or irritation, especially if you’re using them for the first time.

Nanos – No later than 6 weeks after your application, you should have loosely hanging extensions pushed up again with new rings. By this point, you will also have lost a few strands, so your stylist will reinsert them for you while also checking and removing any tangles at the roots. After 12 weeks you should return to completely remove and reposition the nanos, again using new rings.

I-Tips/Stick Tips – No more than 6 weeks after your application, you should have pushed all loose, hanging extensions back up. There is no need to use new rings as you can easily loosen and re-clamp them when needed. By this point, you will also have lost a few strands, so your stylist will reinsert them for you while also checking and removing any tangles at the roots. After 12 weeks, you should return to completely remove and reposition the I-tips. New rings must now be used. If at any point between your treatments you feel that your hair is beginning to mattify at the roots, you should contact your stylist and schedule a maintenance appointment. Although I currently have relatively long, thick hair, I miss the volume and shine my hair once had, which has led me to a new form of extension: keratin hair extensions. And as it turns out, they’re not new at all — famous stylists have been using keratin hair extensions for years. Curious? The same thing. So I tapped into the experts and found two celebrity stylists who have been attaching keratin hair extensions to our favorite stressed-out stars for decades. Read on to learn more about keratin hair extensions — and if I took the plunge.

What are keratin hair extensions?

“Keratin hair extensions are individual strands of extensions that are bonded to your hair with an adhesive or microbeads,” says Rita Hazan, famed hair stylist, colorist and owner of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York. They are usually made from real human hair, which is usually processed for color. And while keratin hair extensions only recently entered the public lexicon, the truth is they’ve been around for eons.

The individual extensions are strategically placed in rows so they are always covered by your natural hairpieces. (Yes, even if you wear an elaborate updo or ponytail.)

Keratin Hair Extensions vs. Traditional Hair Extensions

“The other permanent ones used to be silicone hair extensions, which, as it turns out, aren’t good for your hair,” says Ryan Trygstad, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of the Mark & ​​Ryan Salon in New York. Now, keratin hair extensions are the go-to for movie premieres and red carpets—in fact, they’re so common you probably don’t know your favorite celebrity is even wearing them.

“Keratin hair extensions are the lesser evil for your hair, and they’re easy to care for,” says Hazan. “They look extremely natural when done right, and perfect for someone who wants longer, thicker hair.”

Trygstad – whose celebrity clients include Julianne Moore and Naomi Watts – says keratin hair extensions can “literally bring your hair back from the dead.” Whether a client has put their hair through the ringers or just hasn’t been able to achieve the type of style they want, keratin hair extensions work like magic.

“You can create something that that person could never have had before, or you can bring their hair back to where it was before they destroyed their hair,” he says.

The disadvantages of keratin hair extensions

In rare cases, keratin hair extensions can cause your hair to fall out worse than before.

“Keratin hair extensions can potentially damage your hair,” says Hazan. “Especially if you leave them in too long and if you never let your hair breathe and grow without the heavy weight of long extensions.”

They usually last around 3-5 months depending on how well you take care of them. They may even start to fall out or loosen up, in which case it might be time for a visit to the salon. (They could potentially last longer — Trygstad says, “The slower your hair grows and the less you do it, the longer the extensions will last.) You’ll have to have them removed at a salon — stylists use special soaking solutions. em and tools – so don’t try it yourself.

Who is a Candidate for Keratin Hair Extensions?

However, Trygstad says you need at least 4 inches of hair to work with to get them. And they may not be for you if you don’t usually treat your hair well.

“If you’re too hard on your hair, steer away,” says Trygstad. “When you damage your hair, you damage the extensions and only cause more damage to your hair all the way around.”

While they’re easy to care for, you still need to keep them from getting tangled and matted – which is why it’s always a good idea to get a dedicated extension brush, like this one from Shen Beauty. If it doesn’t sound like something you’d want to commit to, maybe you should reconsider.

The costs

Since keratin hair extensions are pretty much the highest quality extensions you can get, they definitely don’t come cheap.

Depending on your desired result, they can range from $500 (a “half head” for a bit more volume and fullness) to $3,000 for a full head with extensions. (Sometimes even more.)

Again, it all comes down to what you want, where you’re going, and how thick your natural texture is.
