TdiBlacky140 According to the title I need to remove the heater core matrix on my Golf V 2.0 Gt Sport and am looking for some pictures/guides on the procedure.
I’ve read that it can be removed without removing the entire dash but apparently there is a risk of breaking the lines or something behind it, could really use some instructions or pictures of what the procedure is like and if anyone can advise, whether to draw the whole dash is necessary or has anyone managed to remove it without drawing the whole dash and how bad was it?

Hey Crashers, on my 2.0 liter bkd golf the matrix core is located behind the center console shifter area. After all the panels have been removed from the passenger footwell I can see the matrix mounted on the side, apparently it can be pulled out there? Was that with the MK5s you did, I’m just thinking maybe they’re different locations/methods in relation to different versions of the Mk5? Watching a video on youtube one was pushed out but it’s a bit different from my matrix as my 2 pipes on the matrix are connected side by side while the pipes in the youtube video are 1 up and 1 down, it also seems to be less Awkward servomotors screwed onto the youtube motor compared to my BKD.

It’s going to be so frustrating to have to remove the dash because I know I can see the matrix so close but not be able to just slide it out like in the YouTube video.
Will there be a lot of fiddling with airbags etc when removing the dash, I assume steering wheel has to come off, stalks etc. What’s the worst part about that?

Apparently the core on the mk6 also just slips out, there was another video but I can’t find it now.
Crasher sorry I misunderstood your tile, it was getting late and my eyes were crossed: alcoholic yes it can be pulled out on the passenger side but it can be difficult to fit the new one without damaging the fins, they scratch and scape as they go because of the angle so it’s better if the box is outside, but that’s a huge job and only necessary if you’re replacing a leaking capacitor if you’re doing both as a precaution. Remember you will need to purchase the pipe fitting kit (like an A4) 8E0 898 380 and if you are purchasing an aftermarket matrix we have had good results with the Nissens 70228.

How to remove the heater core?
Well yes and no. You have to separate them in the engine compartment. HERE…. You don’t take the hose clamps off. What you do is remove the fitting right behind it. Once the hoses are off, you will find a screw in between that you should loosen. This will loosen the tubes a bit and make removal easier. At this point, go in to remove the core. To get to these hoses you will need to remove the intake pipe from the air cleaner to the turbo.
Heater matrix – is there an easy(er) way?
If it has air conditioning I would try to separate the fan assembly from the blower section just like you do in the “classic” guide posted in one of the FAQ sections somewhere. You may also need to loosen all of the fan case fasteners to have enough clearance to loosen the top and rearmost clips. It could still be a full job though and even then you may not be able to get it off and will need to split the A/C pipes, follow my tips as above but for any vents etc how to get that extra clearance and makes the process as painless as possible. Back then I was following the instructions on the letter for my 1.6 driver which involved pulling clips out of the breather tubes to loosen them from the surroundings and something like that which was a real nightmare but I got there in the end. Next time for my GTI, I ignored everything the internet said and just did it my way
