Repeat the process in the other direction to complete the cut.

I find it easiest when the cowhide rug is on the floor (upside down).

I then stand on the cowhide rug to hold it in place and lift the edge I’m cutting about 10cm off the ground to allow the leather to be gauged.

How do I recognize high-quality cowhide leather?

A properly tanned cowhide does not pill under normal circumstances and can last a lifetime under normal use. The coat has a clean, light sheen and is supple to the touch, similar to a fine leather garment. An inferior skin can have a chemical odor and a stiffer, duller coat. Over time, these lower quality cowhides will deteriorate and fall apart.

What is the smell coming out of my cowhide leather?

All CowhideImports rugs are made from genuine leather that has been treated with chemicals in our tannery to eliminate bacteria. Sometimes these chemicals create a strong odor when you first receive them. We recommend hanging the rug outside and letting it air out for a few hours to a day. If the odor persists, try using a carpet freshener or a powdered carpet deodorizer to eliminate the odor.

Why does my cowhide have brandings / natural marks?

All of our cowhides come from natural cows, each with their own unique markings and hair. Some cows have long fur, some short fur. Some may have dark moles and some may have blemishes. It is a 100% natural resource and almost all hides have their individual markings.

This means you can expect some rugs to show occasional marks, branding and scratches. These natural blemishes are perfectly normal – they are NOT imperfections. Instead, they are simple scars that are unique to each animal, adding a layer of authenticity to each rug.

What can I do about wrinkles and folds in my cowhide blanket?

The creases and creases in your skin will quickly disappear on their own. If you want it to flatten faster, you can place a flat, heavy object (like a hardcover book) on it. And on the bottom you can put a damp (not wet) towel or cloth and leave it for 24 hours. Don’t let the towel soak up too much water.

If a crease or crease remains, it can easily be removed by lightly dampening the skin on both sides with water and then using an iron (low heat) with a piece of cloth in between (so as not to burn the hair) until the creases are removed Have disappeared.
