Is number 7 really “lucky”?

Obviously, when a number is really lucky, you often find it in big winning combinations. Is that the case with the number 7, which many consider to be a lucky number?

The biggest win amount in SA Lotto history took place in January 2018 when 4 winners each won R27.5 million. Her winning numbers were 6, 7, 15, 21, 24, 48 and Bonus Ball 16.

Here you can see that the number 7 was in the winning combination.

In South Africa’s PowerBall history, the biggest win of all time took place in February 2019 when a lucky player in his 50s won a grand prize of R232,131,751. This SA Powerball ticket holder’s lucky numbers were 14, 18, 21, 25, 35 and PowerBall 5. So number 7 didn’t help much here.

A real lucky number will also appear at the top of the list of most frequently drawn numbers. This is not the case with SA lotteries. So while some players have found their fortune with the help of number 7, any other digit can just as likely be your ticket to riches.

So here you have two facts: you don’t need the number 7 to land your win, as other numbers have an equal chance of turning into a win. Secondly, you will notice that number 15 is at the bottom of a list of the most frequently drawn numbers. It still helped four people become millionaires.

Despite these facts, studies have shown that you are 25% more likely to be chosen than any other number in people’s choices. The fact that more and more people are choosing the number 7 is probably a good reason to stay away from it: it’s no more likely to be drawn than any other, and when more people have the same number, the prizes must come in more ways to be shared .

Looking for lucky Powerball numbers? Here you will find number 31 at the top with 15 draws, only three times fewer drawn in the same period. Numbers 1 and 12 have also been drawn more than 110 times. All of these numbers have appeared in draws once in the last five weeks.

EuroMillions

In the major European draw, the numbers 50, 44, 23, 19 and 4 have appeared the most. The difference between the most drawn (50) and the least drawn (46) is 49.

US PowerBall

The most common numbers are: 26, 16, 41, 32 and 28. The number 26 has been drawn 281 times more than the least common ball number 66, although this is due to the recently increased number of balls and not the number 66 incredibly unhappy!

MegaMillions

In the MegaMillions draw, the most frequently occurring numbers are: 17, 31, 2, 39, 4 and 20. 17 and 31 have both been drawn 212 times (at the time of writing) since this lottery was launched, with 17 being our chosen lucky lottery is the last number drawn.

Irish Lotto

The most frequently drawn numbers since the Irish Lotto began in 1988 are 2, 32, 9, 7, 10 and 18. (Remember, however, that the Lotto has undergone many changes over the years; many of you may remember remember it was a 36 number game when it started, but it has since grown to 47).

These stats have been drawn since the draws began, and as far as “lucky” lottery numbers go, these may be your best bets. Although their individual frequency does not suggest that they frequently occur together. Also, many lottery fans sift through stats like these to choose their numbers, so a winning PowerBall ticket of 26, 16, 41, 32, and 28 would most likely be spread among a much larger number of participants.

The luckiest winning numbers in South Africa

The latest SA PowerBall winner won R114,580,902.70 in February. The 35-year-old woman became the first woman in South Africa’s history to win an amount in excess of R100 million. Her lucky number combination was 3, 15, 23, 37, 45 and the Powerball winning number was 18. The lucky numbers for the biggest SA Lotto win were 6, 7, 15, 21, 24, 48 and 16. Biggest lottery winners in Europe

Two of the biggest EuroMillions winners came from the UK. First were Colin and Christine Weir who won €185 million. Your choice; 17, 19, 38, 42 and 45 and the Lucky Stars 9 and 10 made them as rich as the Beckhams.

Of their choices, only 19 appear in the top 10 most frequently chosen numbers, even though none of their choices are among the 10 least frequently chosen numbers.

Next came Adrian and Gillian Bayford, who won the highest-ever EuroMillions Tier 1 prize in 2012, taking home €190 million. Her winning numbers were 50, 21, 17, 48 and 11 and the Lucky Star numbers were 09 and 10.

Her lucky selection included the number 48, which is one of the least frequently drawn numbers at EuroMillions. Number 50, on the other hand, is the ball that appears most often in the entire lottery, appearing 128 times since launch.

It is also worth noting that both couples had lucky star numbers 9 and 10. While 9 is the most common lucky star, 10 is the second most common lucky star after 11.

Of course, the Bayfords weren’t the only ones to hit the top prize at EuroMillions – an anonymous ticket holder from Portugal also won €190 million (although in Portugal the Treasurer took 20%) playing the numbers 3, 9, 20, 30 and 42 plus Lucky Stars 1 and 6.

Ironically, in this case the Portuguese winner did NOT pick any of the most popular numbers and still won the maximum amount available – an important point to remember!

US record breaker

The largest American singles winner was Gloria MacKenzie, who won $590 million, also the largest Tier 1 singles win in lottery history.

The Florida resident’s numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22, and 52, with a winning PowerBall of 11. Of her PowerBall picks, none are among the top 15 numbers, including 13, which is largely avoided by lottery regulars , because it is seen as an “unlucky number”.

That year, Lisa and John Robinson were the amazed owners of one of just three winning PowerBall tickets out of 635,103,137 sold. The $1.6 billion draw gave Lisa and John $327.8 million (which they took in the form of a one-time payment) thanks to numbers 04, 08, 19, 27, 34 and PowerBall 10.

Many lotteries have a habit of having two balls appear in the same draw, such as 4 and 23 in EuroMillions (21 times), but none of the big winners have had this pair in their winning tickets.

1. Study the statistics

This method looks up previous draws and notes the balls that are drawn the most. And thanks to a global obsession with lotteries, there’s tons of information for you to study.

While there is no mathematical reason why some numbers are drawn more often than others, there are some that seem hotter.

Just remember that every number has an equal chance of being drawn, regardless of whether it has appeared 10 or zero times in the last few draws.

Overall, this method is quite time consuming, but many lottery players feel that it gives them an edge.

However, you won’t be the only one using this method, so be prepared to split the prize if your numbers win.

2. Use numerology

Next we come to numerology. Whether you choose this method really depends on whether you believe in the power of the universe.

Everyone can calculate their own “numbers” that have a personal meaning for them.

We won’t go into how to find them as it’s a really long process, but there are plenty of websites that explain how everything works if you want to try this method.

Once you have found six numbers, use them for the next lottery draw.

5. Choose numbers over 31

Although this method does not increase your chances of winning, it could increase the amount you win if you are lucky enough to hit the jackpot.

Why?

Well, most people have some low numbers in their choices since they often use birthdays. Therefore, the numbers above 31 are used less frequently.

This then means there is less chance of someone else hitting the jackpot with your numbers as well.

Think of it this way: you pick your numbers for a $10 million jackpot and 10 people win. Everyone would get $1 million.

However, if only 2 people win, you would rake in $5 million instead.

We would recommend this method to everyone as it is at least mathematically sound.

6. Create a pattern

If you look at your lottery ticket, you will see that each selection contributes to a pattern. In this method, numbers are selected by drawing on the slip.

For example, you could walk in a circle or try to draw a letter of the alphabet. Use your artistic flair and skills to create something that will look really great when handed to the cashier.

However, don’t just walk straight ahead like many people do. So if you win, share your prize with some other winners.

7. Use a system

Another way some people pick their lottery numbers is by using a system.

There are many of these online, all designed to improve your chances of hitting the jackpot.

In reality, they don’t, but many people have found it to work for them.

There are tons out there, but today we’re only going to explain the Delta system.

It works like this:

Choose a number from 1 to 3.

Choose two other numbers from 1 to 8.

Now pick something close to 8.

Now choose two numbers between 8 and 15.

Shuffle the numbers so they are not in numerical order.

Your first lottery number is the first Delta number in the sequence.

The second number is the addition of the first two delta numbers.

The third is your second lottery number + the third delta number.

The fourth number is the third lottery number + the fourth delta number.

The fifth is the fourth lottery number + the fifth delta number.

The sixth is the fifth lottery number + the sixth delta number.

We know this sounds confusing, but it’s actually easy if you follow the instructions.

If a number is higher than the highest lottery number, simply shuffle the numbers until the system works for you.

8. Leave it to the machine

feeling lazy? This is the perfect method for you if you don’t feel like thinking about your lottery numbers.

Most lotteries simply allow players to receive random numbers that are chosen for them by a machine.

Simply select the option and you will receive your ticket with the correct number of choices.

You’ll hear some people say that letting the machine pick your numbers ruins your chances of winning.

However, the truth is that whether you spend a year picking your numbers or let the machine do it, you still have exactly the same odds of winning.

Not to be confused with lucky number or numerology

In number theory, a lucky number is a natural number in a set that is produced by a specific “sieve”. This sieve is similar to Eratosthenes’ sieve that produces the prime numbers, but it eliminates numbers based on their position in the remaining set, rather than on their value (or their position in the initial set of natural numbers).[1]

The term was introduced in a 1956 article by Gardiner, Lazarus, Metropolis and Ulam. They suggest calling the defining sieve also “the sieve of Josephus Flavius”[2] because of its similarity to the counting game in the Josephus problem.

Lucky numbers share some properties with prime numbers, such as B. asymptotic behavior according to the prime number theorem; in addition, a version of Goldbach’s conjecture was extended to them. There are infinitely many lucky numbers. However, if L n denotes the nth lucky number and p n denotes the nth prime number, then L n > p n for all sufficiently large n.[3]

Because of these apparent connections with the primes, some mathematicians have suggested that these properties might be found in a larger class of sets of numbers generated by sevens of a particular unknown form, although there is little theoretical basis for this conjecture. Twin lucky numbers and twin primes also seem to occur with similar frequency.

Continue removing the nth remaining numbers, where n is the next number in the list after the last surviving number. Next comes 9 in this example.

One way in which the application of the method differs from that of Eratosthenes’ sieve is that since n is the number being multiplied on a given pass, the first number eliminated on the pass is the n -th remaining number that has not yet been eliminated, as opposed to the number 2n. That is, the list of numbers through which this sieve counts is different on each pass (e.g. 1, 3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 19… on the third pass), while in the Sieve of Eratosthenes the sieve always counts through the entire original list (1, 2, 3…).

A study found the 11 most lucky numbers in the world and I speculate as to why the numbers topped the list. Side note: 11 made it, but not in 11th place.

A British author named Alex Bellos recently published a book on lucky numbers and although I haven’t read it – books am I right? — I HAVE read the results of a study he published. I’m not sure how much he would appreciate that, so here’s a plug: His book is called Alex Through the Looking Glass in the UK and The Grapes of Math in the US because Americans love puns.

Alex conducted a global survey of 30,000 people to compile a list of the happiest numbers in the world. The complete results can be found here in an Excel spreadsheet. This is the second-highest number in the top 30 (69 came in at #30 to demonstrate the strength of the world’s perverted voting bloc). Depending on where your perspective lies, you’ve credited 42’s success to either Hitchhiker’s Guide or Jackie Robinson.

As one of the world’s leading supporters of the number 11, I’m proud that it went so well. But as THE world’s leading proponent of the concept that the top 10 is for cowards, making the top 10 at age 11 sent me into a recursive loop of pride and shame.

2 is a slightly strange choice for a lucky number, although apparently it brings good luck in China. Since this was a worldwide poll, it’s entirely possible that 2 made it this high on the list – nobody bangs a ballot box like the Chinese do. (I mean, um, not in their own elections…but they’re starved in online polls.) The number 2 ending that high is like the “Yao Ming in the All-Star Game, despite averaging 4 and 2” of the lucky ones is a list of numbers.

Apparently there is an eau de cologne called Lucky Number 6 by Liz Claiborne. That’s the only evidence I’ve found linking the concepts of “lucky number” and “6”… and with all due respect to Liz Claiborne, I’m not sure if her cologne’s Q-Score puts that number on the list brought. And since I’m also not willing to attribute its popularity to Jenna von Oy’s bright shining star, I think it was Chinese culture again – 6 is another of their lucky numbers associated with wealth.

According to the internet, 9 is the lucky number in Norway because of its importance in Norse mythology. There are nine realms in Norse mythology (and occasionally Natalie Portman disappears into them when they all align).

13 is the most unlucky number in most western cultures, so I think we can attribute its popularity to people being opposites. The Internet was essentially based on its ability to turn people into rebels with little effort and no consequence.

5 is another lucky number in Chinese culture. There is certainly nothing that can happen now to dissuade me from believing that this list was entirely influenced by China’s lucky numbers.

let’s explore it 4 is an unlucky number in… oh my… China. My underlying thesis was shaken! It’s time to do what all other good researchers do: ignore this result and move on with confirmation bias galore.

8 is a lucky number in Chinese (and Japanese) culture because the pronunciation is similar to the word for prosperity and wealth. As I said, China totally influenced this list and I have no evidence (that I look at) to the contrary.

Three is a pretty logical choice for a lucky number. They say that good things come in threes, like comedy punch lines, good Destiny’s Child reruns, and celebrity deaths.

Probability is based on the order in the universe, which rarely comes true. The universe doesn’t remember numbers and the law of averages is often misinterpreted in these situations. A Brazilian mathematician claims it is possible to predict the outcome of a lottery draw by applying complicated mathematics and probability theories.

Renato Gianella has found that it is entirely possible to predict numbers that are more likely to appear than others by following the same patterns of behavior that the law of large numbers predicts.

His study, titled The Geometry of Chance: Lotto Numbers Follow a Predicted Pattern, finds that not all number combinations have the same chance of occurring — in short, it’s possible to predict patterns of numbers with a greater chance of being drawn.

The mathematician behind the study has created a website that uses color patterns to indicate combinations of numbers that are more likely to win the lottery based on previous draws in 20 lotteries from around the world – but you may need more than GCSE math to figure out the code decrypt

The study claims that there is a pattern that is applicable to all lotteries worldwide and can be worked out with an intricate colored template.

Mr Gianella said: “The lottery should no longer be viewed as a form of gambling, but as a true demonstration of probability theory and the law of large numbers.”

However, it is not that easy to select the six most likely numbers to win the national lottery, but it is possible to select several combinations of numbers that are more likely to be drawn due to probability.

The math behind the theory is based on past draws and patterns that result from them – past draws dictate the future probability of a given number being drawn.

Lotto Probability – How it works

If you toss a coin, you have a one in two chance of getting heads, but you might get none at all. But if they pick one out of all the different colors (with two shades of purple), they have a 2.6403% chance that their template will appear, since there are 324,000 different combinations using those numbers.

The study states: “The frequentist notion holds that the likelihood of a given event being related to the frequency with which such an event will repeat itself. In addition, if an event is repeated many times, the average of the outcomes from all events should be close to the expected outcome, as predicted by the law of large numbers. Therefore, games of all kinds that involve a lot of repetition (e.g., lotteries) are ideal laboratories for studying probabilities. Now, a new study shows that not all number combinations have the same probability of appearing in a lottery draw.

“The study is based on mathematics and probability theories applied to lottery draws. It takes a colored template that determines all possible combinations of numbers as specified by Pascal’s rule. Using this colored template makes it easier to understand and correctly identify the number combinations with the highest winning probabilities. The UK gambling industry in numbers:

According to the latest results of the participation survey conducted by the Ministry of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, 44 percent of respondents said they had played a national lottery game in the last 12 months (from April 2019 to March 2020). The most popular lottery games are Lotto (71 percent) and EuroMillions (60 percent).

The most common reason for playing the lottery was hoping to win the jackpot on offer (67 percent cited this as a reason), while 24 percent said they were supporting a good cause by playing, and another 24 percent said they play because it is easy.

People aged 45 to 64 were the most likely to play the lottery, with over half agreeing they had played in the last 12 months. On the other hand, 16 to 24-year-olds played the lottery the least often, as only 21 percent stated that they had already played.
