I pulled out the top 11 and easily explained why they are popular. These are the 11 most popular lucky numbers in the world…

11 | 42

This is the second-highest number in the top 30 (69 came in at #30 to demonstrate the strength of the world’s perverted voting bloc). Depending on where your perspective lies, you’ve credited 42’s success to either Hitchhiker’s Guide or Jackie Robinson.

10 | 11

As one of the world’s leading supporters of the number 11, I’m proud that it went so well. But as THE world’s leading proponent of the concept that the top 10 is for cowards, making the top 10 at age 11 sent me into a recursive loop of pride and shame.

9 | 2

2 is a slightly strange choice for a lucky number, although apparently it brings good luck in China. Since this was a worldwide poll, it’s entirely possible that 2 made it this high on the list – nobody bangs a ballot box like the Chinese do. (I mean, um, not in their own elections…but they’re starved in online polls.) The number 2 ending that high is like the “Yao Ming in the All-Star Game, despite averaging 4 and 2” of the lucky ones is a list of numbers.

8 | 6

Apparently there is an eau de cologne called Lucky Number 6 by Liz Claiborne. That’s the only evidence I’ve found linking the concepts of “lucky number” and “6”… and with all due respect to Liz Claiborne, I’m not sure if her cologne’s Q-Score puts that number on the list brought. And since I’m also not willing to attribute its popularity to Jenna von Oy’s bright shining star, I think it was Chinese culture again – 6 is another of their lucky numbers associated with wealth.

7 | 9

According to the internet, 9 is the lucky number in Norway because of its importance in Norse mythology. There are nine realms in Norse mythology (and occasionally Natalie Portman disappears into them when they all align).

6 | 13

13 is the most unlucky number in most western cultures, so I think we can attribute its popularity to people being opposites. The Internet was essentially based on its ability to turn people into rebels with little effort and no consequence.

5 | 5

5 is another lucky number in Chinese culture. There is certainly nothing that can happen now to dissuade me from believing that this list was entirely influenced by China’s lucky numbers.

4 | 4

let’s explore it 4 is an unlucky number in… oh my… China. My underlying thesis was shaken! It’s time to do what all other good researchers do: ignore this result and move on with confirmation bias galore.

3 | 8th

8 is a lucky number in Chinese (and Japanese) culture because the pronunciation is similar to the word for prosperity and wealth. As I said, China totally influenced this list and I have no evidence (that I look at) to the contrary.

Three is a pretty logical choice for a lucky number. They say that good things come in threes, like comedy punch lines, good Destiny’s Child reruns, and celebrity deaths.

1 | 7

Seven is a ubiquitous lucky number in the Western world, so it was almost a shot at number one on the list. From slot machines to George Costanza baby names, everyone wants to be part of the sevens. And to keep it that way, I won’t even look up China’s feelings about the number 7.

A few other findings from the study: The least lucky number is 110 – it’s the lowest whole number that got zero votes…pi came in 18th…as mentioned, 69 came in 30th, so he was clearly asking after THIS demographic…infinity came in 84th…5318008 (aka BOOBIES if you turn the calculator upside down) came in 108th…420 came in 115th so clearly he wasn’t asking for THIS demographic number…1234, the code on your baggage, came in 117th … and 8675309 got two votes, making it a massive tie for 249th place.

A Brazilian mathematician named Renato Gianella believes it is possible to predict lottery numbers. He researched 20 lotteries and applied a series of statistical equation analysis to each. He concluded that some combinations are more likely to occur and compiled his findings in a color-coded table. He said: “(The) lottery should no longer be viewed as a form of gambling, but as a true exposition of probability theory and the law of large numbers.” This is not a viable lottery number predictor as the analysis only works if applied over a long period of time.

Despite Renato’s conclusion, there is still no surefire way to predict this week’s numbers and pick the lottery formula for us. Probability is based on the order in the universe, which rarely comes true. The universe doesn’t remember numbers and the law of averages is often misinterpreted in these situations. It relies on lottery draws, which effectively have a ‘memory’. We call this “Gambler’s Fallacy”. However, it may be a concrete way to improve our chances in the long run.

Top 5 most common lottery numbers in New Zealand

For the record and before we continue, the following numbers appear most frequently in New Zealand lotteries:

1 has appeared 317 times, which is 16.94% of the draws

13 (considered an unlucky number) 304 times and 16.25% of the time

12 drawn on 301 occasions, about 16.09% of the time

19, 298 draws and 15.93% of the time

18, 296 draws and 15.82% of the time

Is number 7 really “lucky”?

In the UK, David and Carol Martin won one of the biggest prizes of all time, £33m (about NZ$64m). Their numbers were 26, 27, 46, 47, 52 and 58. 25 and 26 and 27 and 28 are both among the most frequently drawn consecutive pairs in British Lotto. 26 and 27 don’t. 52 and 58 are among the least drawn numbers in UK Lotto and 27 and 47 are drawn fairly regularly.

Similarly, the Irish Lotto’s record is €18.9 million, claimed in 2008. The lucky lottery numbers back then were 4, 12, 26, 27, 29 and 37 plus the bonus ball 38. None of these numbers appear in the list of six most frequently drawn balls.

In the West, we consider the number 7 to be a lucky charm. It’s 25% more likely to be picked by lottery players, but it’s never featured in any of the biggest jackpot draws. These two facts together make it a very good reason why you shouldn’t choose it. Each lottery ball has the same chance of being drawn as any other, however some appear much more frequently. We broke down how many times each ball was drawn to see how they compared.

The luckiest lottery numbers in the world

We advise caution in considering lucky numbers and assuming they matter because they are more common in your country or in general. However, below is a list of the most common and least common numbers that appear. Name them the luckiest lottery numbers in the world or just assume they appear randomly.

Euromillions

In the major European draw, the numbers 50, 44, 23, 19 and 4 have appeared the most. The difference between the most drawn (50) and the least drawn (46) is 49.

Irish Lotto

The most frequently drawn numbers since the Irish Lotto began in 1988 are 2, 32, 9, 7, 10 and 18. (Remember, however, that the Lotto has undergone many changes over the years; many of you may remember remember it was a 36 number game when it started, but it has since grown to 47).

These stats have been compiled since the draws began, and as far as “lucky” lottery numbers go, these may be your best bets. Although their individual frequency does not suggest that they frequently occur together. Also, many lottery fans sift through stats like these to choose their numbers, so a winning PowerBall ticket of 26, 16, 41, 32, and 28 would most likely be split among a much larger number of entrants.

Biggest Lottery Winner

Two of the biggest EuroMillions™ winners came from the UK. Colin and Christine Weir kicked things off, winning €185 million (approx. NZD 315 million). Her picks: 17, 19, 38, 42, and 45, and the Lucky Stars 9 and 10 made her as rich as the Beckhams. Of their choices, only 19 appear in the top 10 most frequently chosen numbers, even though none of their choices are among the 10 least frequently chosen numbers.

Next came Adrian and Gillian Bayford, who won the biggest EuroMillions™ jackpot of all time in 2012, taking home €190 million (approx. NZ$324 million). Her winning numbers were 50, 21, 17, 48 and 11 and the Lucky Star numbers were 09 and 10.

Her selection of lucky lottery numbers included the number 48, one of the least frequently drawn numbers at EuroMillions™. Number 50, on the other hand, is the ball that appears most often in the entire lottery, appearing 128 times since launch.

It is also worth noting that both couples had lucky star numbers 9 and 10. While 9 is the most common lucky star, 10 is the second most common lucky star after 11.

The Bayfords weren’t the only ones to win the top prize at EuroMillions™ – an anonymous ticket holder from Portugal won €190 million (although in Portugal the tax officer took 20%) with the numbers 3, 9, 20, 30, and 42 plus Lucky Stars 1 and 6. Ironically, in this case the Portuguese winner did NOT pick any of the most popular numbers and still won the maximum amount available – an important point to remember!

US record breaker

America’s largest single jackpot winner was Gloria MacKenzie, who cashed in at $590 million, also the largest single jackpot in lottery history. The Florida resident’s numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22, and 52, with a winning PowerBall of 11. Of her PowerBall picks, none are among the top 15 numbers, including 13, which is largely avoided by lottery regulars , because it is seen as an “unlucky number”.

That year, Lisa and John Robinson were the amazed owners of one of just three winning PowerBall tickets out of 635,103,137 sold. The $1.6 billion draw gave Lisa and John $327.8 million (which they took in the form of a one-time payment) thanks to numbers 04, 08, 19, 27, 34 and PowerBall 10.

Many lotteries have a habit of having two balls appear in the same draw, such as B. 4 and 23 in EuroMillions™ (21 times) but none of the big winners had this pair in their winning tickets. Renato Gianella has found that it is entirely possible to predict numbers that are more likely to appear than others by following the same patterns of behavior that the law of large numbers predicts.

His study, titled The Geometry of Chance: Lotto Numbers Follow a Predicted Pattern, finds that not all number combinations have the same chance of occurring — in short, it’s possible to predict patterns of numbers with a greater chance of being drawn.

The mathematician behind the study has created a website that uses color patterns to indicate combinations of numbers that are more likely to win the lottery based on previous draws in 20 lotteries from around the world – but you may need more than GCSE math to figure out the code decrypt

The study claims that there is a pattern that is applicable to all lotteries worldwide and can be worked out with an intricate colored template.

Mr Gianella said: “The lottery should no longer be viewed as a form of gambling, but as a true demonstration of probability theory and the law of large numbers.”

However, it is not that easy to select the six most likely numbers to win the national lottery, but it is possible to select several combinations of numbers that are more likely to be drawn due to probability.

The mathematician has a website www.lotorainbow.com.br/en/default.asp that allows people to see the probability of different numbers being drawn in 20 different lotteries around the world – but readers may need it themselves a degree in mathematics to understand them.

The math behind the theory is based on past draws and patterns that result from them – past draws dictate the future probability of a given number being drawn.

Combinations of certain numbers are more likely to win than others depending on the probability. In short, not all combinations of numbers have an equal chance of being drawn – but it is still very difficult to predict actual winning combinations

Lotto Probability – How it works

If you toss a coin, you have a one in two chance of getting heads, but you might get none at all. If you toss the coin many times, you’ll be moving more towards a 50/50 split of heads or tails (i.e. it will look more like the odds you were given). Combinations of certain numbers are more likely to win than others. So it’s all about looking at the decisions you’ve made as a whole rather than the individual numbers.

Instead of saying that there are 12,271,512 different possible combinations, Gianella reduced it to 210 colored templates representing all combinations. He then calculated the probability of getting each of these combinations.

For example, if someone were to pick all of the low numbers (ranging from 1 to 9), they have a 0.0007% chance of their template appearing, since there are only 84 combinations to use those numbers. But if they pick one out of all the different colors (with two shades of purple), they have a 2.6403% chance that their template will appear, since there are 324,000 different combinations using those numbers.

The study states: “The frequentist notion holds that the likelihood of a given event being related to the frequency with which such an event will repeat itself. In addition, if an event is repeated many times, the average of the outcomes from all events should be close to the expected outcome, as predicted by the law of large numbers. Therefore, games of all kinds that involve a lot of repetition (e.g., lotteries) are ideal laboratories for studying probabilities. Now, a new study shows that not all number combinations have the same probability of appearing in a lottery draw.

“The study is based on mathematics and probability theories applied to lottery draws. It takes a colored template that determines all possible combinations of numbers as specified by Pascal’s rule. Using this colored template makes it easier to understand and correctly identify the number combinations with the highest winning probabilities.
