What is the 9 day novena?

A novena (from the Latin novem, “nine”) is a prayer, or set of prayers, prayed for nine days, hours, weeks or even months. It is often prayed for a specific intention or grace and may be directed to particular saints for their intercession.

March 24, 2020

Dear MODG families,

Every year my family participates in the Three Impossible Things Novena. It is the most powerful novena I have ever said and I know many people whose prayers have been answered by appealing to Our Lady’s intercession in this novena. I’ve shared this with some of you over the past few years, but this year it felt appropriate and timely to share with our entire community.

I know of four babies conceived and born in direct response to this novena whose parents were told they could not have children or would find it very difficult to have children. I know a woman who returned to the sacraments when her sister made it one of her intentions. I know a family that has been at odds for years and was reconciled in response to this novena. The husband of one of my friends found himself in an impossible situation at work. It was solved during my friend’s novena. It’s really powerful.

This seems like a particularly good time to go to our mother and ask for help. We have a direct concern for an end to the coronavirus and also for the economic problems it has caused. We want the sacraments to be available again. In addition, most of us also have personal concerns to bring to our mother. I invite you to bring these concerns to our Mother in this novena.

It is long: it is said for nine months, from March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, to December 25, Christmas Day. Though long, it is a prayerful way of accompanying Mary through her sacred pregnancy.

Novena for Impossible Requests

The following novena honors the nine months that Our Lady carried Our Blessed Lord in her womb. Begin on March 25th and the novena will end on Christmas!

Novena for Impossible Requests:

Pray the following prayer fervently each day from March 25th to December 25th for each of the three intentions.

“Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our loveliness and our hope!

We call to you, poor banished children of Eve; To you we send our sighs, sorrow and weeping in this vale of tears.

Then, most gracious Advocate, cast your eyes of mercy upon us; and after our exile show us the blessed fruit of your womb Jesus.

O gentle, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.”

V – “Pray for us, Most Holy Mother of God.”

R – “That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.”

“Virgin of the Incarnation, a thousand times we salute you, a thousand times we praise you for your joy as God became flesh in you. Because you are such a mighty Virgin and Mother of God, grant what we ask of you for the love of God.”

State intent number 1 here;

Repeat all of the above and state intention number 2;

Repeat a third time and name intention number 3.

CONCLUSION:

After the above prayers and intentions say the memorare.

Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, it has never been known that anyone fleeing for your protection, imploring your help, or seeking your intercession was left without help.

Inspired by this trust, I fly to you, O virgin of virgins, my mother.

I cry out to you, before you I stand sinful and sad.

Mother of the Incarnate Word, do not despise my requests, but hear and answer me in your mercy. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace…

Blessed and blessed be the Blessed Sacrament of the altar, in heaven, on earth and everywhere. AMEN.

I hope you will join me in praying this prayer. I’ve been saying it for many years, and I have a tip to offer. Say it in the morning when you get up and at night when you go to bed. That way, if you forget (as can happen) once, you’ve always said it again throughout the day.

Also, although I’m sure you already know this, I thought I should add that Pope Francis asked us all to pray the Lord’s Prayer together at 12 noon on March 25th. This is 4 a.m. PT. ? Our intention is an end to this pandemic. Pope Francis will also give the apostolic blessing “urbi et orbi” on Friday. He will begin the liturgy at 6 p.m. Italian time. This is 10 a.m. PT.

I know that our Lord will hear our prayers and, if it is His will, through His Mother’s intercession!

With love and prayers,

laura

How long does it take for a novena to work?

Traditionally, many people choose to pray novenas asking for a saint’s intercession on the nine days leading up to that saint’s feast day. If you’re praying before a sacrament or event, you’ll pray the novena for nine days before or after it. In truth, you really can pray a novena at any time.

Mary Help of Christians Novena

A novena is a method of prayer in which we pray for the same request or devotion for nine consecutive days.

All these united in prayer, together with some women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his brethren. Acts 1:14

What is a novena?

origin

This Catholic practice of prayer probably comes from the “first novena” shared in Acts. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples gathered to ask him about the restoration of Israel. Jesus said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8).

So the disciples and Mary waited together and prayed that the Holy Spirit would guide them. Finally, nine days later, the Holy Spirit descended on her. “When the time of Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place” (Acts 2:1). When the disciples prayed together for nine days for the coming of the Holy Spirit, they followed the form of novena prayer that is so popular today.

authorship

Many saints and other holy people have had novenas revealed by Christ or the Virgin Mary. For example, Christ revealed the Novena of Surrender to Father Dolindo Ruotolo (1882-1970), now a candidate for beatification, to guide us to increase our trust in God—our surrender to Him. Mary revealed the 54-day novena to a young girl suffering from a disease that was thought to be incurable; This 54-day prayer actually consists of 6 novenas.

Other novenas have been prayed for centuries without being credited with an author, such as the novena of the Holy Spirit. Traditionally prayed for the nine days before Pentecost, this novena prays for the descent of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: holy fear, godliness, strength, knowledge, understanding, counsel, wisdom, and the fruits of the Spirit. You can pray the Holy Spirit novena with Chika Anyanwu.

You can find the Holy Ghost Novena in the Challenges tab of Hallow.

There are a variety of novenas to pray: with saints, to draw closer to God, or for a specific purpose in the heart. Whether you want to increase your faith in God or get to know a saint better, we promise you will find one that works for you!

Types of novenas

anticipation

We pray novenas in anticipation before or after a funeral, pray for the soul of the deceased and ask God to be close to the mourners. This could be the novena of a saint close to them, or a novena to Christ, such as the novena of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

preparation

With these novenas we hope to prepare ourselves for the nine days before a sacrament or other important day. For example, some couples might pray a novena before their wedding anniversary, or you might pray the Christmas novena of St. Andrew before the birth of Jesus.

petition

Novenas in supplications ask God to answer a prayer or ask a specific saint for his intercession. First, identify your request or intention for prayer. Then choose a saint who is related to the topic. For example, you might pray the St. Joseph the Worker Novena when praying about employment; we offer this novena in Hallow.

Buses

These novenas are prayed as an act of penance; We pray for nine days and ask God for His mercy. They are often given as penance after the sacrament of confession. In Hallow you can pray the novena of Divine Mercy with Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in The Chosen

Why pray a novena?

We pray for novenas for a specific purpose or grace, such as for a loved one, healing, forgiveness, clarity in making a big decision, etc. However, they are not magic. We cannot assume that our prayers will be answered immediately. And sometimes what we pray for isn’t exactly what we need. Rather, we pray novenas to grow in patience and to place our trust in God, just as the apostles prayed in anticipation of the Holy Spirit coming to them.

We pray novenas to become disciples, to grow in discipline, and to open our hearts to God’s will. Whether our purpose is fulfilled or not, we end the nine days in gratitude for God’s presence in our lives.

When do you pray a novena?

Some novenas are prayed at specific times, such as the novena of Divine Mercy, which begins on Good Friday. Traditionally, many people choose to pray novenas asking for the intercession of a saint during the nine days leading up to the feast day of this saint. If you pray before a sacrament or event, pray the novena nine days before or after it. In truth, one can say a novena at any time. Novenas guide us to strengthen our trust in God – and we need that in all situations in life.

How to Pray: A Novena

Identify your intention.

Before you commit to praying for nine days, take some time to think about what your purpose for prayer is. Do you want to mentally prepare for an event? Or pray for a loved one who is struggling? Perhaps you are simply looking for encouragement to develop a strong habit of prayer. Remember, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance is never a bad idea!

Choose a novena.

After taking some time to prepare for prayer, choose a novena that reflects your intention. This could be a prayer for that specific purpose, or it could be a novena to a saint who is known and loved in the subject you are struggling with or for whom you have gratitude at this time in your life. Know that it doesn’t have to be “perfect”; Taking time each day to pray for a specific purpose will hopefully bring you clarity and peace and guide you to put your trust in God.

Dedicate nine days.

Once you begin a novena, dedicate time each day to be present with God and pray with Him. Sometimes it’s difficult to stay on track. We recommend reserving a specific time and setting a reminder on your phone (or in Hallow) or add it to your calendar for the nine days. You might also consider asking someone to pray the novena with you to hold each other accountable.

Embrace the novena.

As you embark on this prayer journey, try to embrace it fully each day. Each day may seem a little different to you, but try to accompany your time in prayer with other acts of faith. It could be social media fasting or gossip, or it could be doing something good for someone else every day. Let these nine days of prayer transform you in more ways than just dedicating time each day to prayer.

Be patient.

Remember, novenas are not magic. When you come to the end of your novena and your prayers seem to go unanswered, know that God hears your prayers and loves you. And often our prayers are not answered in the way we hoped. Ask for God’s help to trust Him and desire His will to be done.

In Hallow you will find the Novena of Surrender, the 54 Day Novena, the St. Joseph Novena, the Divine Mercy Novena and the Sacred Heart Novena starring Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in The Chosen. As we add more novenas to the app, we hope you will start praying with us!

The Holy Rosary

Begin with the sign of the cross:

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Then recite the creed:

I believe in God the Father Almighty

creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended to heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit

the Holy Catholic Church,

the community of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and eternal life.

Then say 1 “Our Father”, 3 “Ave Mary’s” for the virtues of faith, hope and charity; and then 1 “Glory be”:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who have trespassed against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, so it is now and always will be, world without end.

The rosary is divided into three parts, each having five mysteries. As you meditate on the mysteries, recite for each mystery:

1 “Our Father”

10 “Ave Mary’s” and

1 “Glory be”

After each mystery, the “Fatima prayer” is said.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are most in need of Your mercy.

It all adds up to a decade.

After the completion of the five mysteries (five decades) it says to the “Hail Holy Queen”:

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. We call to you, poor banished children of Eve. To you we send our sighs mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. So turn your eyes of mercy upon us, most gracious Advocate, and after this exile show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O gentle, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, Holy Mother of God.

So that we may be worthy of Christ’s promises.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

He overthrew the mighty from their thrones,

and exalted the lowly.

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He came to the rescue of his servant Israel

for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

for Abraham and his children forever.

Prayer for Vocations by Pope Benedict XVI

O Father, arise among Christians

plentiful and holy callings to the priesthood,

who keep the faith alive

and keep the blessed memory of your Son Jesus

through the preaching of his word

and the administration of the sacraments,

with which you renew your faithfulness again and again.

Grant us holy servants of your altar,

who are careful and fervent custodians of the Eucharist,

the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ

for the salvation of the world.

Call servants of your mercy,

that through the Sacrament of Reconciliation

spread the joy of your forgiveness.

Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome her with joy

the numerous promptings of your Son’s Spirit

and, docile to His teachings,

May she take care of vocations to the ministerial priesthood

and to consecrated life.

Support the bishops, priests and deacons,

consecrated persons and all baptized in Christ,

so that they may faithfully fulfill their mission

in the service of the gospel.

We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hate, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, forgive.

Where there is doubt, believe.

Where there is despair, there is hope.

Where there is darkness, there is light.

Where there is sadness, there is joy.

O divine master,

admit that I seek not so much to be comforted as to comfort;

to be understood, how to understand;

to be loved, how to love.

Because in giving we receive.

It is in forgiveness that we are pardoned

and in dying we are born to eternal life.

Alternate version:

Lord, make me a channel of your peace,

that I can bring love where there is hate;

That where it’s wrong

I can bring the spirit of forgiveness;

that I can bring harmony where there is discord;

that I bring truth where there is error;

where there is doubt I can bring faith;

that I bring hope where there is despair;

that I bring light where there is shadow;

that I can bring joy where there is sadness.

Lord, let me rather seek it

to comfort than to be comforted;

to understand than to be understood;

to love than to be loved.

Because through self-forgetfulness one finds.

Through forgiveness one is forgiven.

By dying one awakens to eternal life.

Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas

Lord, Father, almighty and ever living God, I thank You for

though I am a sinner, your useless servant, not

because of my worth, but in the goodness of your mercy,

You have nourished me with the precious body and blood of Your Son,

our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray this holy communion doesn’t bring me

condemnation and punishment, but forgiveness and redemption.

May it be a helm of faith and a shield of goodwill.

May it cleanse me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions.

May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience,

and growth in power to do good.

May it be my strong defense against all my enemies visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses,

physically and mentally.

May it unite me more closely with you, the one true God, and guide me

How do you pray a novena to St Therese?

Thérèse of Lisieux, you said that you would spend your time in heaven doing good on earth. Pray for me that I, like you, may have great and innocent confidence in the loving promises of our God. Pray that I may live my life in union with God’s plan for me, and one day see the Face of God whom you loved so deeply.

Mary Help of Christians Novena

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, often called “The Little Flower”, inspires us to live in simplicity and to put love at the forefront of everyday life. We pray the St. Theresa Novena to strengthen our trust in God’s love for us.

Let us not tire of prayer: trust works wonders. St. Thérèse of Lisieux (The Little Flower)

Who was Saint Therese?

childhood

St. Thérèse was born in France in 1873 to Zelie and Louis Martin. The youngest of five siblings, St. Thérèse was stubborn but devout from an early age. She was quite bright, but because of that she often got bored at school. Around the age of 9, Thérèse became ill with no effective treatment; She prayed for healing from her illness. As she turned to a statue of the Virgin Mary smiling down at her, Therese was healed. She wrote, “Mary’s face radiated kindness and love.”

Her inclination towards religious life became even more ardent after this healing, despite being so young. She longed to draw closer to Christ. By the age of 13, two of her older sisters had already entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, and Saint Therese longed to be there with them. During a pilgrimage to Italy, she asked the local bishop and even Pope Leo XIII. He said to her, “Go, go, you will enter if God wills.”

She entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux in 1888 at the age of 15. She grew up in peace, humility and love. In 1896 she contracted tuberculosis. She wrote the story of a soul in the months leading up to her death. She died in 1897 and praised God until her last moment on earth.

“The Little Way”

The rich spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux is now known as the “Little Way”. The modern saint resonates so easily with many of us because of the sheer ordinariness of her life, even though she lived it in extraordinary ways. Her “Little Way” to Christ consisted of small steps to find holiness in everyday life. She dedicated her life to spiritual simplicity – she focused on loving God.

“If every little flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its beauty.” St. Therese of Lisieux

By dedicating her little path to God, she truly “lived prosper where you are planted.”

canonization

St. Therese was 1925 by Pope Pius XI. canonized. She was then the youngest saint ever to be canonized – she died at the young age of 24. Her parents Zelie and Louis Martin were also canonized. In 2015, they were canonized by Pope Francis as the first and only couple to be canonized together.

Saints Louis Martin and Marie-Azélie Guérin practiced Christian service in the family and day by day they created an environment of faith and love that encouraged the vocations of their daughters, including Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus. Pope Francis

A church teacher

Before that, however, Pope Saint John Paul II honored Saint Teresa for her spiritual contribution to the Church. In 1997 he proclaimed Saint Therese the Doctor of the Universal Church. A Doctor of the Church is a Saint whose writings and teachings are recognized by the Church as having made a major contribution to Catholicism. With this title, the Church considers its work to be true and useful.

St. Thérèse von Lisieux not only grasped and described the deep truth of love as the center and heart of the Church, but lived it intensively in her short life. It is precisely this convergence of doctrine and concrete experience, of truth and life, of doctrine and practice, that shines with particular brilliance in this saint, making her an attractive model, especially for young people and for those who seek the true meaning of her Life. Holy Pope John Paul II, October 19, 1997

Pope Saint John Paul II recognized that Saint Teresa, although she died young, understood “the divine love that surrounds and permeates every human endeavor.” Her unwavering trust in God continues to inspire us in our daily lives today.

Today there are 36 recognized Doctors of the Church, among whom Saint Thérèse sits in heaven. However, only four of them are church doctors – Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Teresa of Avila (patron saint of sanctuary) and Saint Therese of Lisieux.

Why pray the Teresa novena?

We pray in this novena to become more like Saint Teresa – finding beauty in the simplicity of life, trusting God with all our hearts and living a life of love. St. Therese was a remarkably humble and young follower and friend of Jesus. We pray in the footsteps of her little walk of loving God and seeking kindness as she did.

In a time like ours, so often marked by a transitory and hedonistic culture, this new Doctor of the Church is proving remarkably effective in enlightening the minds and hearts of those who hunger and thirst for truth and love. Holy Pope John Paul II, October 19, 1997

When should we pray the St. Theresa Novena?

We can pray the St. Therese novena whenever we need guidance to increase our confidence in God’s love for us. Whether it is to discover our own “little way” in this world or to seek simplicity, we can pray this novena and ask for Saint Thérèse’s intercession in our lives.

The St. Therese novena is customarily prayed before the feast day of St. Therese on October 1, the day she died of tuberculosis.

Practice: Morning and evening, recite three Ave Marias in honor of the three great privileges, with this invocation at the end: for the morning: “O my mother, save me from mortal sin this day”, for the evening: “O my mother , save me this night from mortal sin.”

(Indulgence granted by Leo XIII; 300 days for members of the Archconfraternity of the Three Hail Marys by Benedict XV and Apostolic Blessing by Pius X)

Devotion to the Immaculate Lily of the Most Holy Trinity

One of the greatest means of salvation and one of the surest signs of predestination is undoubtedly devotion to Mary Most Holy. All the holy Doctors of the Church agree when, with St. Alfons Maria Liguori say: “A pious servant of Mary will never perish.” The main thing is to remain faithful in that devotion unto death.

Would you like to see Our Lady before you die? Here is a simple devotion that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself offered to St. Mechtilde taught around the year 1270. It is known as the “Three Hail Marys Devotion” and consists of saying the Ave Maria three times a day with the invocation “O my Mother, save me from mortal sin today (or night).” The prayer is said three times to celebrate the Most Holy Trinity honor who is the source of all greatness of Our Lady It is to honor the power of God the Father, the wisdom of God the Son and the goodness of God the Holy Spirit as communicated with such generosity to Our Blessed Lady. Can there be a simpler or practice more adaptable to all than reciting three Hail Marys each day in honor of the privileges bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Adorable Trinity?

Our Blessed Mother herself revealed this devotion to the Benedictine mystic St. Mechtilde. In the Book of Revelation of Saint Mechtilde we read:

“While Mechtilde was begging the glorious Virgin to help her in her hour of death, Our Lady appeared to her and said: ‘I certainly will. But I also want you to say three special Hail Marys to me every day, to the glory of God the Father, whose omnipotence exalted my soul so high above all other creatures that after God I have the greatest power in heaven and on earth. At the hour of your death I will use this power of God, Father, to keep from you every enemy power.” The second “Ave Maria” is spoken in honor of the Son of God, who has imparted to me his unfathomable wisdom, this wisdom so that all darkness of ignorance and error will be dissipated.” “The third Hail Mary will be in honor of God the Holy Spirit, who has filled my soul with the sweetness of his love and tenderness and mercy.” In your last hour, then I will meet the bitterness of turning death into divine sweetness and bliss.”

The secretary who wrote down the revelations of St. Mechtilde according to her dictation was St. Gertrude the Great. She was there when Saint Mechtilde died and saw Our Lord appear to her. Later, many revelations regarding the Three Hail Mary devotion were also revealed to her.

On the Feast of the Annunciation in 1299, when the Ave Maria was sung during Matins in the chapel, St. Gertrude saw a vision of three bright flames emanating from each of the three divine Persons and penetrating the heart of the Blessed Virgin like three rays. She was made to understand that the three streams of light were symbols that said: “After the power of the Father, the wisdom of the Son, and the merciful tenderness of the Holy Spirit, there is nothing equal in power, wisdom, and merciful tenderness to Mary.”

She then saw other currents returning to their original source and was inspired to know that these were graces sent by Our Lady to those who prayed her Hail Mary with devotion.

Another day, during prayer, she saw Our Blessed Mother in the form of a white lily with three branches in front of the Most Holy Trinity. This revelation confirmed the title “the Immaculate Lily of the Most Holy Trinity” given to her by saints. The saint learned on this occasion that the dazzling whiteness of the lily signified the spotless purity of the Holy Mother of God, never stained with the slightest venial sin. The three branches symbolized Our Lady’s participation in the omnipotence of the Father, the wisdom of the Son and the love of the Holy Spirit. Then Our Blessed Mother spoke to St. Gertrude and said:

“To every soul who faithfully prays the Three Hail Marys, I will appear at the hour of death in splendor so extraordinary as to fill the soul with heavenly consolation.”

One of the first to say the three Hail Marys and recommend them to others was the famous Saint Anthony of Padua. His particular aim in this practice was to honor the immaculate virginity of Mary and to maintain a perfect purity of mind, heart and body amidst the dangers of the world. Many, like him, have felt its healing effects. St. Leonhard of Port Maurice, the famous missionary (1675-1751), advised all his listeners to practice this devotion. It was given as a penance at confession to obtain the grace to avoid all mortal sins day and night, especially for those struggling with sins of impurity; moreover, he promised eternal salvation in a special way to all who remained faithful to this practice. He would always impose the Three Hail Marys to be said morning and evening.

Following the example of these two great Franciscan saints, St. Alphonse Maria Liguori embraced this pious practice and supported it most zealously and vigorously. He advised its use and even imposed it as a penance on those who had not adopted this good habit. He speaks of this in his beautiful, classic book The Glories of Mary:

“Each morning and night, when you get up and go to bed, say three Hail Marys lying on the floor, or at least kneeling, and to each Hail Maria add the brief aspiration: ‘By your pure and immaculate conception, O Mary ‘make my body pure and my soul holy.’ Father Auriemma tells how the Blessed Virgin promised St. Mechtilde that all who remain faithful to this daily practice would die a good death.”

The Holy Doctor exhorts parents and confessors in particular to be careful that children faithfully pray their three Hail Marys every morning and evening. Or rather, like St. Leonard of Port-Maurice, he sincerely commends it to all, “the pious and the sinners, young and old.”

The most famous of all the propagators of this devotion was the Capuchin Father John the Baptist of Blois. Because of his work, Pope Leo XIII. devoted to this devotional practice. In Blois he founded the brotherhood entitled “Pia Opera for the Propagation of the Three Ave Mary”. Approved by many bishops, it quickly spread to many countries. Later, on July 30, 1921, Benedict XV. in an apostolic letter the status of an Archconfraternity and granted her precious indulgences.

The same Father John the Baptist of Blois founded the monthly journal Le Propagateur des Trois Ave Maria, which publishes some of the myriad spiritual and temporal favors Our Lady bestows through this devotion.

There is also an official Archconfraternity status and an image of Our Lady. Its peculiarity: from the visible Immaculate Heart of Mary emerge three rays of light, one for each of the three divine Persons of God. Engraved on the ray symbolizing God the Father are the word omnipotence, on that of God the Son the word wisdom, on that of God the Holy Spirit the word mercy.

Why is this short, simple, and easy devotion to Our Lady so powerful? The answer lies in the power of the Ave Maria. So many Catholics throughout history have lived and died without ever truly appreciating the priceless value of the Hail Mary. Too many people today underestimate the power of the Blessed Virgin Mary before God. Saint Teresa of Avila wrote: “The glory due to a devout Hail Mary is worth a long life of suffering.”

The saints valued the Hail Mary more than most people, and even their appreciation was insufficient. St Louis de Montfort said:

“Few Christians, however enlightened, know the true value, merit, excellence and necessity of the Hail Mary. It was necessary for the Blessed Virgin to appear several times to great and enlightened saints in order to show them the merit. They have composed entire works on the wonders and efficacy of this prayer for the conversion of souls. They have loudly proclaimed and openly preached that the salvation that began with the Hail Mary, the salvation of each of us is specifically linked to this prayer It is this prayer that has caused the dry and barren earth to produce the fruit of life, and it is this prayer – well said – that germinates the Word of God in our souls and produces Jesus Christ, the fruit of life. They tell us that the Ave Maria is a heavenly dew to water the earth, which is the soul, to bear fruit in due season; and that a soul which is not watered by this prayer bears no fruit and produces only thorns and brambles, and i is ready to be cursed.”

This devotion is also an act of adoration of the Most Holy Trinity. Through the threefold invocation we adore God the Father, in whose omnipotence she shares; God the Son, who imparted all his wisdom to her; God the Holy Spirit, whose mercy and goodness are communicated to mankind through her alone. Is there any reason, then, to wonder why this devotion is so powerful?

Skeptics of all ages constantly point to the disproportion between the three Hail Marys and eternal salvation. Father John the Baptist of Blois had this answer for her:

Why do you pray for 9 days after a death?

According to Christian traditions, prayers help the soul of a loved one to leave the earth easily, as well as find their way in another world. On the 9th day there is a commemoration of the deceased, the prayer of his sins, as well as his blessing on the 40-day journey to Heaven.

Why remember this on the 9th and 40th days after death?

Today the pagan beliefs of our ancestors can be traced in Christian rites. Strict rules have come down to us from the depths of centuries. This includes: The deceased must be taken out of the house, just put your feet forward in the coffin, necessarily his favorite objects. Obligatory ritual is the commemoration of the deceased, eating on certain days and visiting the grave. Orthodox Christians adhere to the canons of the Church. This applies in particular to the commemoration rituals on the 9th, 40th days and on the anniversary of death. Relatives help the soul of a loved one to find peace and the kingdom of heaven.

Why note 9 and 40 days after death

The servants of the Sretensky Monastery interpret their memorial vision on the 9th and 40th days:

On Memorial Day, people give thanks to 9 rows of angels. They are with him and intercede before the King of heaven for the forgiveness of his sins. The clergy believe that the soul is in the heavenly abode until the ninth day. She stops mourning the abandoned body and the mundane world. She begins to realize that during her life on earth she has shown little gratitude and turned to God for help. To worship the Lord God, the soul leads the ranks of angels. In the Holy Church there are prayers asking the Almighty to take the soul of the child under his protection. After the throne of the Lord God from the 9th to the 40th day, the soul falls into the infernal abode. She must watch the torments of sinners who do not deserve the Lord’s forgiveness. Therefore, the 9th day is a big day for the family. They should spend it in remembrance, prayers and requests to the Lord God to beg him a place in the heavenly dwelling. According to the canons of the Church, the soul will find its refuge only on the 40th day, where it will await the Last Judgment. After death, he immediately goes to heaven, enjoys a quiet, joyful life near the Lord or in hell, and continues to live in torment far from God.

FYI! The man himself must take care of the kingdom of heaven, not the memory of loved ones. As Scripture says (Hebrews 9:27), “Only once does a man die, and then judgment.”

Worth 9 days

According to the church canons, the soul of the deceased wanders around the earth for three days. She moves among native people, visits familiar places. These days, the Guardian Angel is next to her with other angels who help to cope with the mental state of the deceased. They help:

See the beauty of the past life;

Forget sad days, cause of death;

Understanding that mistakes were made in life does not give her the right to stay in heaven.

According to Christian tradition, prayers help the soul of a loved one to easily leave the earth and find their way in another world. On the 9th day there is a commemoration of the deceased, the prayer of his sins and his blessings on the 40-day journey to heaven. The relatives of the newly deceased should perform the following rituals:

Reading the prayers, remembering and only remembering the good things about the deceased. According to the canons of the church, it is necessary to order a service and leave the products on the church table – sweets, cookies, sugar, cereals, pasta, vegetable oil, bread. It is desirable to hand out funeral sweets, biscuits to strangers, it is obligatory to mention the name of the dead. Those for the memory of cooked porridge-kutya, which is placed on the memorial table. It is advisable to take them to the temple and leave them on the church table. This dish symbolizes that the soul of the deceased begins a new cycle of “heavenly torture”.

The right to sue relatives helps the soul of the deceased to find its way into eternity.

What happens to the soul 9 days after death

According to orthodox belief, it is believed that after death man does not end his earthly existence. It is written in Scripture that man consists of a body and a soul, which is considered eternal. After nine, the body of the deceased turns to dust, and the soul meets the Creator. The clergy ask the Creator to classify the newly deceased among the nine angels, who will ask the Almighty to forgive him all his sins, determine his way forward, and grant him a new place near them. This will help the deceased to transition into the abodes of hell that are greater than paradise. Only the heavenly Creator will determine the whereabouts of the soul of the deceased at the Last Judgment.

Value 40 days

For 40 days, the soul of the deceased wanders between heaven and earth, seeking protection. Finally, on the 40th day, she leaves the body and never returns. The body belongs to the graveyard, and the already purified spiritual component is eventually forgiven, but it continues to oversee the earthly life of relatives. There is a second commemoration on the 40th day. Relatives can visit the cemetery and remove funeral wreaths from the gravesite.

FYI! Loved ones help their prayers to be purified and the soul to find everlasting peace. No need to visit the cemetery often and shed tears if it disturbs the deceased.

What happens to the soul 40 days after death

Nobody is destined to live forever. Each person has his own destiny, he goes to another world in his own time. There are many Christian customs to explain these phenomena. According to church canons, the soul leaves the human body. After forty days of ordeal, she finally finds her place. Here she will wait for the Second Coming. It determines the permanent whereabouts of the newly deceased soul. On the 40th day, relatives arrange a wake-up call, arrange a prayer in the temple for rest. They give her the opportunity to go through all the heavenly trials with the Lord God. By their deeds, loved ones give future eternal life to the soul of the deceased, handing over their fate into the hands of the Almighty.

How to celebrate day 9 and 40

After the burial, the human soul becomes restless and begins to wander between heaven and earth. The Scriptures indicate that the 9th and 40th days after mortal day mark the beginning and end of the heavenly path. Relatives an opportunity to help the soul take its rightful place in the other world with everlasting peace.

Ninth day:

The aborigines are required to perform a wake in honor of the nine angelic ranks who are servants of the Heavenly King. These actions will protect the soul of the deceased from God’s judgment.

The soul with the angel goes to worship the Lord God. The Almighty on the throne makes the soul tremble and also awaits his judgment. The festival is celebrated with funerals and reading prayers. Asking the Lord God to have mercy on the newly established servant of God.

Fortieth day:

Mark with the memory. Order “Prayers for Rest” in the church prayer. The priests help the soul to climb the holy mountain of heavenly Sinai, to see the Almighty, to attain happiness, so that it finds itself in the heavenly abode.

Relatives should also read prayers for forgiveness of the deceased’s sins to help her enter the heavenly abode where righteous souls live.

FYI! Family members should control their behavior for 40 days after the death of a loved one. You are being watched by a higher power. Therefore, in order not to make mistakes during the holy days, you need to familiarize yourself with the burial and memorial rituals.

How to set the mourning table

At the wake it is not accepted to invite people, they have to come themselves. At the memorial table, the focus is not on food, so there is no need to prepare complex and delicious dishes. The main thing – is the memory of the deceased, his forgiveness of all voluntary and involuntary sins. Be sure to read the prayer “our father” for the rest of his soul. Everyone present should say a few kind words about the deceased. Then all the words spoken will fill the cup of goodness.

Definitely eat a wheat or milk rice, which must be sprinkled with holy water. It is taken off the plate three times in a row. Then serve soup or borscht. On the table there can be dishes with fish, vegetables and meat. It is customary to cook pancakes both with and without filling. Cakes with fruit compote are a mandatory dish. Sweets and biscuits can lie on the plates. If the commemoration day falls on the Great or other Lent, then it is not necessary to serve meatless dishes, but out of respect for the guests, you can put on the table alongside meat dishes, fish or vegetable salads seasoned with vegetable oil . These must be the deceased person’s favorite foods.

After dinner, the guests are distributed kites and sweets.

How to count 9 and 40 days

The 9th and 40th days from the date of burial, as well as the number and time of death, do not need to be taken into account. If the death occurred in the second half of the day, the Church’s memorial is held on the 8th day. Date of death unrelated to the day and time of the burial. According to Orthodox traditions, the burial is carried out on the second or third day after death. For family reasons, the body should be buried on the fifth or sixth day. Watches are arranged strictly according to church calculations on the 9th and 40th days. The commemoration can be postponed one day earlier, but in no case later.

In the churches, during the sermons, the clergy keep repeating that the Supreme Court is the most just. Only after separating himself from earthly life and visiting the heavenly and hellish dwelling places can the newly deceased appear before the judgment of the Lord God.

What’s the meaning of novena?

novena, in Christianity, a term designating a spiritual devotion consisting of the recitation of a set form of prayer for nine consecutive days, in petition for a divine favour or in preparation for a liturgical feast or as participation in an important event such as a Year of Jubilee.

Mary Help of Christians Novena

Novena, in Christianity a term denoting a spiritual devotion consisting of reciting a set form of prayer for nine consecutive days to invoke a divine favor or in preparation for a liturgical festival or to attend an important event such as a year of the anniversary. Novena devotions are particularly common in Roman Catholicism.

The nine days commemorate the similar time the apostles spent “with the women and Mary” in prayer in preparation for the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:13-14). Novena were known in the Middle Ages, but their popularity dates back to the 17th century. The novena before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) was particularly popular. The novena of grace in honor of St. Franz Xaver (March 4-12) is one of the best known. Other patrons commonly invoked in novenas are Mary, St. Jude, the Sacred Heart, and St. Joseph. The novena typically consists of a direct petition from a specific patron; This prayer can be accompanied by the Lord’s Prayer or the Ave Maria. Some Marian novenas, notably the 54-day miraculous novena, involve praying an entire rosary. In addition to novenas, which culminate on certain feast days, novena prayers for the dead and novenas for specific requests or as a form of thanksgiving are also common.

The Christian usage dates back to the Roman novena or novendial, a nine-day festival celebrated on the occasion of an omen of bad luck. The term was also applied to the nine days of mourning after the death of the emperor or other notables.

What’s the definition of novena?

The feast day of Mary Help of Christians is May 24th, but you can pray this novena for any reason, so start praying!

The title “Mary, Help of Christians” points to Mary’s special role in the trials of the Church. The title dates back to 1571, when Christianity was saved by Mary, Helper of Christians, when Catholics across Europe prayed the Rosary and won a decisive Christian victory over Islamic invaders from the Ottoman Empire.

Churches, ministries, and organizations around the world were planted under Mary’s protection. St. John Bosco is known for his devotion to Mary, the help of Christians. He saw her profound influence as a protector and patroness. He told people, “Believe in the Blessed Sacrament and in Mary, Helper of Christians, and you will see what miracles are.” Through their intercession, he founded the Salesians, a religious order focused on helping poor children help and raise boys to the priesthood.

The feast day of Mary Help of Christians is May 24th.

FIRST DAY

Hail, Star of the Sea, Blessed Mother of God, Virgin Ever Fruitful, Happy Gate of Heaven.

PRAYER:

O Most Holy Virgin, mighty help of Christians, I confidently appeal to the throne of your mercy. Hear the prayers of this poor sinner asking for your help so that I may always flee from sin and sin’s opportunities. Behold the first grace I ask of this novena. Amen

Our father…

Ave Maria…

Glory be…

Hail Holy Queen…

Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.

Short Bible Reading:

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown with twelve stars.” – Apocalypse 12:1

“And the dragon was angry with the woman, and went out to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” – Rev. 12:17

Two distinctive signs of authentic believers: Jesus and Mary, salvation of believers and help of Christians. Unto death I promise that I will remain true to my religion: the Holy, Roman, Catholic and Apostolic Churches.

SECOND DAY

Basilica: Help of Christians & Charles Borromeo, Argentina

As we take this sweet Ave that came from Gabriel, the peace within us is affirmed by changing Eva’s name.

PRAYER:

Most Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of Goodness and Mercy, who with Her visible help has often delivered the Christian people from the abuses and barbarism of the Muslims, I ask you, My Lady, my soul from the attacks of the world, the devil and the world free meat; and grant me that at any time I may gain complete victory over the enemies of my soul. Amen

Our father…

Ave Maria…

Glory be…

Hail Holy Queen…

Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.

Mary certainly stayed until the birth of St. John the Baptist because she knew that expectant mothers needed special care and help. Here we have a beautiful example of charity. I, too, promise to always practice charity and mercy.

For my part, I promise you never to stain my soul with sin and not to be part of any society condemned by the Holy See. I promise to obey the perennial teachings of the Church, since I wish to live and die in the bosom of the Catholic religion, the only one in which I can with certainty await my eternal salvation. Amen

Our father…

Ave Maria…

Glory be…

Hail Holy Queen…

Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.

Short Bible Reading:

“Now standing on the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there and the disciple whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold yours! Son. After that he says to the disciple: Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to himself.”—John 19:25-27

We can never forget the words of the dying Jesus: “Mother, behold your son. Son, behold your mother.” Before he died, he entrusted his mother, Mary, to his disciple, so that the faithful might have such a mother with them in their last agony.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, in union with the Holy Spirit. Amen

Our father…

Ave Maria…

Glory be…

Hail Holy Queen…

Mary, help of Christians, pray for us.

Short Bible Reading:

“Now when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold your son. After that he said to the disciple: Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took them for his own.” —John 19:26-27

Mary Most Holy, who lovingly consented to the sacrifice that gave birth to her, was given to the disciple and to all of us as a Mother. The Virgin Mary is the Church’s model of faith and love. Mary, the help of Christians, collaborates in the Redeemer’s work to restore supernatural life to souls.
