The history of the devotion to Maria Knotsolver begins with the German nobleman Wolfgang Langenmantel (1568-1637). For some years he had been married to the noblewoman Sophie Imoff, but in 1612 the couple were on the verge of divorce. To save their marriage, Wolfgang decided to pay a visit to Father Jakob Rem, a Jesuit priest who lived at the monastery and university of Ingolstadt, seventy kilometers north of Augsburg.

Over a period of 28 days, Wolfgang visited Father Rem four times and received advice from the holy priest, who was honored for his wisdom, piety and exceptional intelligence. In fact, Father Rem is said to have experienced an apparition of Mary, during which she appeared to him under the title “Mother Thrice Admirable”.

At their meetings, Wolfgang and Father Rem prayed together and worshiped the Virgin Mary. On the day of their last visit together, September 28, 1615, Father Rem had prayed in the chapel of the monastery in front of a picture of Mary entitled Our Lady of the Snows. When the two men met, Wolfgang presented Father Rem with his wedding band. (In the wedding ceremony of the time, the maid of honor tied the arms of the bride and groom with a ribbon to represent their invisible union for the rest of their lives.) In a solemn ritual act, Father Rem took Wolfgang’s wedding band and lifted it aloft while simultaneously untied the knots of the ribbon one by one. As Father Rem smoothed the ribbon, it turned intensely white. This allowed Wolfgang and Sophie to avoid a divorce and continue their marriage.

A few years later, Wolfgang’s grandson Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel (canon of St. Peter 1666-1709), who was himself a priest and canon lawyer, decided to donate a family altar to the church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg to commemorate the turn of the century in 1700. Such donations were a common tradition at the time. The altarpiece was dedicated to “the Virgin of Good Counsel” and Father Hieronymus wanted it to depict the history of the Langenmantel family.

A painter, Johann Melchior Georg Schmittdner, was commissioned to paint the family altar. He decided to base his painting on the story of Wolfgang, Sophie and Father Rem. Schmittdner therefore depicts the Virgin Mary untying the knots of the marriage bond. The crushing of the serpent makes it clear that Mary is the Immaculate Conception, since she is the serpent’s eternal adversary as the one who has been freed from all taints of original sin by special grace. The dove is a reference to Mary as the bride of the Holy Spirit. angels support the Blessed Mother; one presents her with the knots of our life, while another angel presents us with the untied ribbon. Eventually, the story of the Langenmantel family faded from history. In the following centuries, however, the painting remained as an antique in the church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg. The painting was in the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in the city of the same name in Augsburg for a number of years. The painting, which has survived wars, revolutions and secular opposition, still adorns St. Peter’s Church today.

Although the reference to Mary as one who ties knots dates back to St. Irenaeus in the second century, the devotion to Mary untying the knot was not well known until recently. In the 1980s, Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio S.J. brought to Argentina. (now Pope Francis), where it remains particularly popular. Worship has also spread through the efforts of Brother Mario H. Ibertis Rivera, according to whom the Vatican has approved the image’s use for Vatican publications.

The term commonly used to refer to these forms of prayer is the rosary, probably because of their use of the beads. Composed of twenty-four beads in honor of Our Lady. Each part consists of a single bead and a group of three beads. The individual beads signify the wondrous vision of Our Lady.

Make the sign of the cross and pray the Apostles’ Creed.

Say the Lord’s Prayer on the first bead.

On the next three beads say three Hail Marys.

On the single bead, say Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then proclaim the First Mystery of the Rosary and say an Our Father and the three Hail Marys on the next three beads.

It consists of a medal of Archangel Raphael associated with a prayer to him.

Say three Hail Marys on the small beads. Say a special prayer on the nine beads in honor of the nine choirs of angels. End the rosary with a request: St. Raphael, angel of health, love, joy, light, pray for us.

The Rosary of Saint Michael the Archangel

Story:

The story of this rosary goes back to a devout servant of God, Antonia d’Astonac, who had a vision of Saint Michael. He asked Antonia to honor him with nine salutations to the nine choirs of angels. Saint Michael supposedly promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honor as they approached Holy Communion would have an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine choirs. He also promised those who pray the Rosary daily his constant support and the support of all the holy angels throughout life.

Method:

O God, come to my aid, O Lord, hasten to help me. Glory be to the Father, etc. (Say an Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the following nine salutations in honor of the nine choirs of angels)

1. Through the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Seraphim, may the Lord make us worthy to burn with the fire of perfect love. Amen.

2. Through the intercession of Saint Michael and the heavenly choir of cherubim, may the Lord grant us the grace to forsake the ways of sin and walk in the paths of Christian perfection. Amen.

3. Through the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Thrones, may the Lord instill in our hearts a true and sincere spirit of humility. Amen.

The Rosary of Saint Joseph

The rosary is divided into fifteen groups of four beads, consisting of one white and three violet beads. The white pearls symbolize the purity of Saint Joseph and the purple his holy piety.

Method:

Say the Apostles’ Creed on the medal to ask for the grace of faith. Say an Our Father on each of the white beads in honor of the three divine Persons of the Most Holy Trinity in thanksgiving for all favors obtained through their intercession. On each of the red beads (there are thirteen to commemorate the thirteen years Saint Philomena spent on earth) say the following prayer:

Missionary Rosary

The Mission Rosary links two major concerns of our church: prayer and apostolate. The rosary is a traditional form of prayer which combines remembrance, praise and petition. It remembers the events of Salvation History, and is in fact the memorial of Christ’s mission. The Hail Mary as essential part of the Rosary combines praise and intercession. It praises God for the wonderful things he has done for Mary and through her. But its second half also reminds us that we are in need of God’s help and protection which we seek with Mary as intercessor. If the rosary already by itself points to apostolate and mission, this idea has been reinforced by Mary’s urging to convert and evangelize expressed in numerous apparitions. The missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word consider themselves mandated to bring this message to the whole world, especially in view of promoting peace. One of the tools they use is the mission rosary. It encourages prayers for their mission.

The colored beads symbolize the missionary efforts of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in each of the five continents. The beads of each decade of the rosary then has a distinct color:

Red for the Americas (North and South)

Green for Africa

White for Europe

Blue for Oceania

Yellow for Asia

The missionary rosary follows the normal pattern of Creed, Our Father, three Hail Marys, Glory Be and the five decades (each for the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries). For each of these decades the ten Hail Marys are preceded by the Our Father and conclude with the Glory Be.

Made by Carmelite monasteries. It is symbolic of the bouquets given to queens and mothers, since the rosary is itself a bouquet of prayers.

The Ladder Rosary

According to popular belief, in Old Mexico the Ladder Rosary has an interesting history. Some trace the first ladder rosary to the vision of Saint Dominic in which he saw souls climbing to heaven on the rosary. Others point to the vision of Saint Francis De Sales who saw two ladders to heaven: a rather steep one leading directly to Jesus, and another far less steep one leading toward Mary. Jesus told Saint Francis: “Tell your sons to come by the other ladder,” meaning the easiest way to Jesus is through Mary!

In other popular legends, Saint Dominic, in his visions saw souls climbing the ladder to heaven, and Jacob dreamt about a ladder between heaven and earth on which angels ascended and descended. The ladder even appears in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling painting, showing souls being pulled from Purgatory by a rosary.

During a Mexican wedding ceremony, a lazo (lasso), a large rosary, is draped around the bride and groom while they are kneeling at the altar.

In the early 13th century, Saint Dominic preached the gospel to combat various heresies and he founded the Dominican order to carry out this work of spreading the good news. Despite their best efforts, however, heresy kept surfacing, so he asked the Blessed Virgin Mary to guide him. Tradition has it that Mary appeared to him in 1221 and bestowed on him the devotion of the Rosary and encouraged him to share the prayer with others. Rosary devotion consists of several prayers, all rooted in Scripture. See “How to Pray: The Rosary” below for the traditional order of these prayers in the Rosary. People often pray with rosaries to guide their time in prayer, although they are not necessary for devotional prayer. If you don’t have a rosary, you should pray with the Bishop Sheen X Hallow Rosary.

Apostle Creed

“I believe in God the Father Almighty…”

We begin the Rosary with the Apostles’ Creed. It is a fitting way to begin this prayer by affirming our core beliefs as Catholics. Each line is taken from different books of scripture including the Gospels, 1 Peter, 1 Corinthians, Acts and more.

Our father

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallow be thy name…”

Also known as the Lord’s Prayer, this prayer comes directly from Jesus in Matthew 6 when he taught his disciples how to pray.

Ave Maria

“Hail Mary, full of grace…”

Although the repeated Hail Mary is addressed directly to Mary, the act of love is ultimately addressed to Jesus, with her and through her. St. John Paul II

The Ave Maria prayer is at the heart of the rosary. We pray 10 Hail Mary prayers in each of the five decades – a total of 50 Hail Mary prayers at the end of your devotional. This prayer, in which we ask Mary for her intercession, is also rooted in Sacred Scripture. The first two lines are from the first chapter of Luke, when the angel Gabriel announces the coming of Christ at the Annunciation and as Mary’s cousin Elizabeth greets Mary at the visitation.

The glory be is often referred to as a doxology, a word derived from Greek meaning “an expression of praise or glory”. This prayer is common and uncomplicated – we pray that the Holy Trinity will be glorified at all times.

The Fatima prayer was given directly by Mary to three shepherd children on July 13, 1917, during her performances in Fatima, Portugal. In this prayer, said at the end of each decade, we ask Jesus for mercy on us and on all souls.

Greetings, holy queen

“Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy…”

The rosary ends with this powerful prayer, derived from the ancient tradition of monks concluding their prayer together with the Salve Regina (a Latin chant of the Ave, Holy Queen). Recalling that Jesus was given to us through His mother Mary, we thank God for Mary’s participation in all saving events of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

Each of the five decades of the Rosary highlights a unique moment within the Paschal Mystery. There are four groups of mysteries—Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, and Glorious—and each contains five key events in Jesus’ life. As we pray the Rosary, we enter and meditate on a series of these mysteries through the eyes of Mary, the disciple closest to Jesus and who knew him best. Joyful Mysteries (Monday, Saturday)

The Joyful Mysteries invite us to reflect on the Incarnation and we step into the miracle of Jesus coming to earth as a baby. We see the incredible story unfold through Mary’s eyes – the angel appearing (The Annunciation), the greeting of her cousin Elizabeth (The Visitation), the birth of her son (The Birth), and the significant events that point to who this Child Is and What He Will Do (The Presentation and Finding in the Temple). We are invited to imitate Mary and “meditate upon her in [our] hearts” (Luke 2:19).

Painful Secrets (Tuesday, Friday)

The Sorrowful Mysteries help us relive the passion and death of Jesus. Not only do we remember it, but we step in—we watch with Jesus in his distress before his arrest (The Agony in the Garden). We enter his passion with the flagellation at the pillar, the crowning of thorns, and the carrying of the cross… and then we stand at the foot of that cross next to Mary as we witness his crucifixion and death. We seek to understand the depths of God’s love for us as we ponder the cost of our salvation and redemption. We feel that sadness and remorse even more deeply when we think of it through his mother’s eyes.

Luminous Mysteries (Thursday)

Through the Luminous Mysteries we meditate on the events of Jesus’ public ministry: his revelation as the Father’s beloved Son at the baptism in the Jordan, his first public miracle at the wedding at Cana, his proclamation of the kingdom of God, the transfiguration of Jesus and the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. Pope John Paul II wrote: “In the luminous mysteries, apart from the miracle of Cana, Mary’s presence remains in the background… But the role she played in Cana accompanies Christ throughout his ministry. The revelation made directly by the Father at the baptism in the Jordan, and which is also repeated by John the Baptist, is brought from the lips of Mary in Cana and becomes the great maternal counsel that Mary addresses to the Church of all times: “Do whatever he does tells you.'”

Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday, Sunday)

In the Glorious Mysteries we meditate on the awesome miracles that occur after Jesus’ death. These events show how Jesus is who he says he is – the Son of God. We experience the joy of the risen Christ and imagine being Mary or the first disciples (The Resurrection). As we pray we see the ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The last two mysteries, although not specifically mentioned in Scripture, come from a centuries-old tradition based on passages from Revelation and the Song of Solomon. We celebrate the grace and role Jesus gave to His Mother (Assumption of Mary and Coronation) and we pray that one day we will go where Mary is going.

Why do we pray the rosary?

Think of the rosary as like the sea: there is something for everyone, whether you consider yourself a seasoned mystic longing to delve deeper into prayer with our Lord, a novice struggling to Learning to pray, or someone seeking the Lord’s help right now when something is going on in your life. “I grew up Catholic and prayed the rosary, especially the Ave Maria. But the 10 Commandments are clear: “You shall have no other gods before me.” So why do Catholics pray to Mary? Or to other saints? Should we do without it?”

The simple answer to your question is, “Yes, you should refrain from praying to Mary and the saints.”

Catholics pray to Mary (or to the saints) because, like the rest of us, they recognize that they need someone to help them bring their requests before a holy God. I think we all have a certain feeling that we cannot stand alone in the presence of God.

The Bible says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…” (1 Timothy 2:5). God’s Word tells us that Jesus Christ is the help we need – He is our “mediator” or mediator with God. But we are never told in God’s Word that any other person, including Mary or any of the saints, can serve as an intermediary between us and God.

One of the reasons Catholics pray this way is that Roman Catholic doctrine has elevated the teachings of certain leaders (including the Pope) to equal authority with the Word of God. So when a pope (some of whom were godless, especially in the Middle Ages) declared that people could find help in prayer by praying to Mary or to the saints, this became part of Catholic dogma (or the teaching of the Catholic Church) . , and this kind of error has continued through the centuries.

Whenever you put something next to God’s word because it is of equal value, it becomes more and more prominent. Therefore, in many Catholic circles, the teaching of the Church has essentially eclipsed the teaching of the Bible, so that many Catholics know the teaching of the Church (including prayer to Mary and the saints) much better than the teaching of the Bible. This is unfortunate and sad and leads to many such errors.

The good news is that we don’t have to pray to Mary or the saints to be heard by God. Jesus made this wonderful promise: “Whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:3). This means that as a believer in Christ, you can pray with great confidence, knowing that your prayers will be heard and answered by God! You have the promise of Jesus.

Novena, in Christianity a term denoting a spiritual devotion consisting of reciting a set form of prayer for nine consecutive days to invoke a divine favor or in preparation for a liturgical festival or to attend an important event such as a year of the anniversary. Novena devotions are particularly common in Roman Catholicism.

The nine days commemorate the similar time the apostles spent “with the women and Mary” in prayer in preparation for the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:13-14). Novena were known in the Middle Ages, but their popularity dates back to the 17th century. The novena before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) was particularly popular.
