ORIGINS OF THE INVENTION

The invention described herein was made by a member of the Armed Forces represented by the United States Navy and may be made, used, licensed by and for the Government for all governmental purposes without payment of royalties.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to the field of child booster seats and more particularly to those used in movie theaters.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The invention is a child seat for comfortably supporting small children in a movie theater with seats designed to support adults and biased to fold up and in under spring pressure when not in use.

The prior art is replete with booster seats and safety seats for almost any application where a child needs to be seated in seats designed for adults. Many inventions are concerned with automobiles and airplanes where proper seating is a safety concern. Examples of this application include US Pat. No. 5,332,285 issued to Sinnhuber on July 26, 1994 presents a vehicle safety seat that can be attached to the vehicle seat and headrest. US Pat. No. 5,286,086 issued to Gunji on February 15, 1994 also teaches an auxiliary child seat for a vehicle having connections for the vehicle seat belts. Other child seats are taught for ordinary chairs, e.g. B. US Pat. No. 5,335,968 to Sheridan et al. issued August 9, 1994, which describes an inflatable unit and for styling chairs, such as US Pat. No. 1,247,161.

Despite being a crowded art field, the child seat space is underrepresented in stadiums and cinemas. One reference teaches a stadium seat and luggage rack combination similar to a saddlebag with a padded flap to soften the hard bench type stadium seat. See US Pat. No. 2,865,433 issued December 23, 1958 to Warner. Another reference teaches a bench-type height adjustable seat for hanging over the armrests in a movie theater. As in this US Pat. No. 5,303,980 to Young, issued April 19, 1994, the current standard cinema has seats of a depth sized for a normal sized adult and does not provide seats sized for children. Children using these adult seats often stand in them to gain enough height to see over the people sitting in front of them.

Further, in the Young reference above, it is taught that standing in the adult seat by the child presents two problems. The first is that most adult theater seats are designed with a preload to spring the chair up and in when the chair is not in use. It is unsafe to have a child in a chair that is biased up and in, as the seat will bias upward, potentially legs, in smaller children who lack the resistance to hold the adult theater seat down of the child, creating an uncomfortable viewing environment. The second problem created by a child standing in the theater seat is that the standing child is then generally taller than a seated adult and thus restricts viewing of the film by moviegoers seated behind the child.

The last patent mentioned above provides additional height for the child by teaching a bench seat suspended over the armrests of a movie seat. The bench is a solid flat surface that becomes uncomfortable for the child, especially considering that the child has to sit on the bench for a long time to watch a full movie. Another problem with the sprung bench seats is that the child’s feet are free to constantly engage the spring-loaded cinema seat, which creates noise when the spring seat is partially depressed and then released.

A bench seat is also difficult to carry to the theater, especially with a child and the requisite beverages, popcorn, and various other items that mothers take to a theater with their children.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a children’s theater booster seat that can be used in an adult cinema seat that utilizes the comfort of the existing cinema seat by resting thereon.

It is also an object of the present invention to teach a theater chair that can be folded and easily carried to the theater.

Another object of the invention taught herein is to provide a theater chair that can serve as a beverage carrier from the theater lobby to the cinema seats by providing a recessed surface for supporting beverages, popcorn, etc.

It is still another object of the present invention to disclose a theatrical elevator chair that can be folded and rack mounted in a coin operated dispenser rack in a theater lobby.

In accordance with the present invention, a children’s theater booster seat is provided wherein the seat is articulated and collapsible for easy transport and dispensing from a coin operated rack in a theater lobby. The back of the seatback is recessed to accommodate drinks and other concessions en route to theater seating. The seat cushion has weighted fastener straps with sufficient weight to hold a spring loaded theater seat in the down position when inserted into the theater seat. While the name chosen for the invention implies a primary use in movie theaters, it should be understood that the invention could be used in stadiums, conference theaters and even fast food restaurants where food needs to be carried along with a child seat. The invention is designed for seats that have a spring-loaded seat cushion, but most embodiments would work well on stationary or bench seats.

These and other more specific matters will become apparent upon reading the following specification and claims and considering the accompanying drawings to which they refer in connection therewith. The following drawings show a single embodiment in accordance with the present invention for purposes of illustration only.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

These drawings, to which express reference is made for all individual features not explained below, explain the invention using examples. To be shown:

COWARDLY. Figure 1 is an operational view of the invention operatively installed in a film seat.

COWARDLY. 2. is the one shown in FIG. 1. Folded into storage and carrying position.

COWARDLY. Figure 5 shows a series of inventions 10 mounted in a dispensing rack.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

We now turn to FIG. Referring to Figure 1, the present invention can be viewed in the open position installed in a standard cinema seat 2 having a spring-loaded seat cushion 4 biased to the up position. The present invention 10 is shown installed in the film seat 2 in the open, use position. The children’s theater booster seat 10 of the present invention includes a chair back 12 that is hingedly connected to a chair base 14 . Both the chair back 12 and the chair seat 14 are essentially planar structures and can be made of any material that is strong and light Seat 14 considered.

A pair of straps 16 contain an amount of shot 18 which adds sufficient weight to the straps to hold the film seat 4 in the down and open position while the chair 10 is installed. The shot can be any small ball bearing or BB and can be steel, copper clad or leaded. Because of lead toxicity, it is believed to be best to use a small steel shotball approximately the size of an airgun BB, although shot size is a design choice and places no limitations on the invention. The straps 16 are shown as two different separate straps, but another embodiment can easily be constructed with a single weighted extension 16. In the embodiment chosen for illustration, the weighted extension is constructed of pressed and adhesive material such as is marketed under the tradename Velcro®. so that it could engage a receiving material on the chair back 12 and hold the chair 10 in the side-to-side folded position.

It is important to note that the illustrative embodiment teaches making weighted straps 16 from pressed and adhesive materials and filling them with shot 18, but the straps could include snaps or buckles to engage the proper receptacle on the chair back 12 to come and have the weight appendage as a separate element.

Finally FIG. 1 shows a pair of handles 20 which are curved handles of the type used on dresser drawers. Another type of handle is shown in FIG. 3 made of canvas material. It is believed best to construct both the handles 20 and hinge 22 from canvas material as it is soft and safe for small children and is economical to build. The handles 20 are operably attached and act together as a single handle when the invention 10 is in the folded side-by-side position, allowing the user to hold both handles in one hand while carrying the chair. The type of handles is not critical to the invention and the type and materials used in the construction of the handles 20 are considered a design choice.

COWARDLY. 2 shows the children’s surgical chair 10 in a folded sideways position. A hinge 22 pivotally connects the chair back structure 12 . Figure 2 now shows handles in close proximity to each other so that a person carrying the chair 10 can use and hold them as a single handle.

COWARDLY. 3 is a plan view of the rear of chair back structure 12 showing a two-dimensional array of possible recesses formed in chair back structure 12 for supporting beverages and other concessions. The chair back 12 has a raised lip 24 around the outer edge so that when the chair is carried horizontally it can also serve as a carrying tray for any items that need to be carried into the theater. The raised lip doesn’t have to be overly large and about a third of an inch works well. Within this raised lip 24 are a plurality of circular indentations 26 sized to carry beverages from the concession stand to the cinema seats. The embodiment chosen for illustration also has a square indentation 28 operatively sized to accommodate a box of popcorn in the indentation 28 . The depths of the indentations are a design choice, but one-half to one inch works well for prototype testing.

COWARDLY. FIG. 3 also shows two patches of Velcro-type containment material 30 for attachably engaging the weighted fastener tapes 16 shown in FIG. 1 to maintain the invention 10 in the folded side-by-side carrying position.

COWARDLY. 4 is a side view of the invention 10 showing the recessed indentations 24 and 26 in phantom. A pair of cushions 32 are shown attached to the back and seat of the infant chair. These cushions can be attached using any suitable attachment method, such as B. snaps or glue are attached.

COWARDLY. Figure 5 shows a number of children’s theater booster seats mounted in a dispenser stand 36 for dispensing in a movie theater lobby. The dispensing rack may be of the type that baggage carts dispense at major airports and there are many existing designs which incorporate a coin type arrangement. It is considered within the scope of this invention to design rails 38 so that the invention may be commercially dispensed in appropriate dispensing racks.

Thus, while the invention has been described in relation to a specific embodiment thereof, there are numerous variations and modifications which will readily occur to those skilled in the art in light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described.
